  • Man, 40, hospitalised after suicide attempt

The Police in Jigawa on Friday said a 40-year-old man, Abdullahi Jafaru, was hospitalised after he attempted to commit suicide.

The command Spokesman, SP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Dutse.

Jinjiri said Jafaru attempted to commit suicide because he failed to convince his wife, Halima Abdullahi, to return home after a misunderstanding that made her abscond from the matrimonial home.

“Dec. 31, 2018, a woman by name Halima Abdullahi absconded from her matrimonial home because of misunderstanding with her husband, Abdullahi Jafaru, aged 40, of Shunar village in Kafinhausa Local Government Area.

“And attempts made by the said Abdullahi to console Halima to come back to his house being his first wife with six children proved abortive.

“In this regard, Abdullahi found it unbearable to survive without his lovely wife, hence he found petrol and set himself ablaze.

“And as soon as the police in the area got the hint, they swiftly moved to the scene and rescued the suspect/victim and rushed him to hospital.

“While still on sick bed receiving treatment, Abbullahi is still calling the name of Halima despite the fact that his second wife remained with him at the hospital,” Jinjiri said.

According to him, the case is under investigation.

Others included six officers of the Lagos State Fire Service deployed to put out the fire, which started around 6: 05 pm.

The fire, The Nation gathered, arose from the burning of refuse and other materials on the land beside the market by its owner, Mrs Emily Patrick.

Two of the victims, sources said, are in intensive care at the Burns and Trauma Centre of Gbagada General Hospital. Others were rushed by Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to the Accident and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate near Oregun, Ikeja.

Sources said a dumpsite nearby was filled with fibre materials and other used-industrial equipment.

The wind blew the fire to the dumpsite, a source said, adding that the efforts of Mrs Patrick and her husband to quell the fire failed.

Owode-Onirin Market Chairman Alhaji Wahab Adeoti described the tragedy as pathetic.

He said:”I have instructed our traders not to burn their refuse. Rather, they should put it in bags and wait for the Private Support Participation (PSP) operators to cart away their refuse. And they have abided by this. In fact, the dumpsite has been abandoned for several months. We don’t dump our refuse there.

Director State Fire Service Razaq Fadipe said his men were responding to treatment.

“Eleven people are suspected to have inhaled the toxic fumes from the fire. We attacked the fire professionally; bearing in mind that the area is surrounded by iron scrap markets and residences and if not quickly quenched, it could have been disastrous.”

  • Community, soldiers clash in Delta

    •Three hospitalised   •Army: it’s a lie

Three persons have been hospitalised, following a confrontation between members of Erhoike community, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State and soldiers from 222 Battalion, Agbarha-Otor.

It was gathered that the community was protesting an oil spill, which had devastated their means of livelihood.

Sources said the confrontation followed the soldiers’ refusal to allow the people go on with their protest.

They said the soldiers shot into the crowd and allegedly molested protesters in the process.

The President-General of Erhoike community, Matthew Oyibocha, said the community decided to shut the flow station because the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) decided to pursue the cleanup inappropriately.

Oyibocha said:  “The spill occurred on September 6. It damaged our ponds, farm lands and it’s affecting our economic and social lives. We reported the matter to NPDC, which promised to address the issue.

“We were surprised to see a company on September 17 coming in with youths from Otagbuwe in Kokori Community to clean up the areas. This incident has not been reported to the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).

“They were accompanied by soldiers led by Lt. Jatau, who claimed he was under the orders of the Commanding Officer to deal decisively with us. In the process, they shot sporadically in the air, molested and injured our people.”

But the Commander, 222 Battalion, Lt Col Kenneth Chigbu, denied the allegation, saying there was no molestation of any community member.

A senior NPDC official, who pleaded for anonymity, said the spill was a minor one, which did not spread beyond the company’s facilities’ right-of-way.

“No farm or economic activities was impacted. The spill is minimal and the spread is within the company’s right of way. I think the real issue is that the community has a divided leadership.

“And the immediate trouble may not be unconnected with the choice of the contractor to handle the cleanup,” he said.
