  • De Xambdra hotel opens for business in Ado-Ekiti

The hospitality industry in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, has received a new addition with the opening of  De Xambdra International Hotel. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports.

The world of the hospitality industry in Ekiti State has been taken a notch higher with the recent opening of De Xambdra International Hotel in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Located on 12, Main Street, behind the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Ire-Akari Estate, the facility brings to the table extra touch or class for those looking for best services in the industry.

The hotel has 68 rooms reputed to be the biggest in the city while additional 38 rooms will be added in the next couple of days to accommodate more customers.

The presidential lodge of the hotel has six rooms for guests of its status and another five rooms for their aides with swimming pools as another incentive.

The hotel also boasts of an outside bar, general bar, executive bar, uninterrupted internet service, laundry service and restaurants serving local, continental and intercontinental dishes.

Speaking with The Nation on why he decided to set up the hotel, the Chairman of De Xambdra, Mr. Gbenga Bankole, said he knows what hospitality business means overseas where he had lived for over twenty four years hence the need to replicate same in his hometown of Ado-Ekiti.

When asked of why he chose to name the hotel De Xambdra, Bankole explained that the name is a Greek word which means God’s place or God’s land.

Bankole said he was also motivated to establish the hotel to contribute to the economy of the state and give employment opportunities to scores of young men and women to earn their living.

He disclosed that so far, 58 workers have been employed to work in the hotel with the likelihood of employing more workers as operations expand.

Bankole explained: “I established this hotel to enable me contribute to the development of the state because charity begins at home.

“We discovered that there are many unemployed people in the state and this is just one of the means to take some unemployed people off the streets and give them means of livelihood.

“We could have done this in Lagos, Abuja or any other bigger cities but we chose to establish it in Ado-Ekiti. Majority of our people here are farmers and if people continue to leave the state, it will affect us.

“I decided to set it up here after many years abroad and it is my desire to develop the state and contribute to its economy and make people enjoy what is enjoyed elsewhere.

“That was the main reason why I looked inward and decide to bequeath this to posterity”.

Speaking along the same line, the hotel consultant, Mr. Bola Olakunori, described De Xambdra as a laudable project which was conceived to add spice to hotel business in Ado-Ekiti in particular and Ekiti State in general.

Olakunori said the hotel will benefit Ado-Ekiti and its environs noting that the number of previously unemployed graduates now working there will have positively effects on their families.

He said further: “The quality service we render here is incomparable to the best anywhere and the location of this hotel is very good. It is located in a place that is serene, quiet and it is not a place where crime thrives.

“The security here is second to none because we have policemen always around to protect our guests. The uninterrupted internet service is always available.

“Our swimming pool at the presidential lodge is second to none, our staff are well-trained and always in action. The environment here is wonderful and the scenery around here is very inviting.”

Olakunori said the vision is to make De Xambdra one of the market leaders in Ado-Ekiti within the next three to four years and a place that will serve customers best and give them value for their money.

Before the hotel opened its doors for business, there were training programmes for its first set of workers in its quest to justify the reasons for the establishment of the hospitality facility.

The new members of staff numbering 58 including males and females were gathered in the conference room of the hotel for all-round trainings that would make them fit into the standards already set by the owners of the hotel which many have described as a compliment of a status the Ekiti state capital is approaching.

Delivery a lecture on environmental consciousness, the chairman of SAJOE Services, Mr. Joel Ogunmodede said the pioneer staff must not be carried away by the personality of their guests, emphasizing that guests vary from one degree to the other with different intentions.

He stressed that different people come to hotels with different purposes being a public place and charged the trainees to be hygienic in the task of sustaining the pace at which the hotel has been designed to operate as a unique establishment geared towards adding values to the existence of the state capital.

While emphasizing that the attitude of every staff has an impact on the image of the hotel, Mr. Ogunmodede urged all staff to work together as a family with the aim of justifying the huge investment already committed to the project which he said would go a long way in re-orientating the hospitality business in the state.

Addressing the pioneer staff, Chairman of the Hotel, Mr. Bankole, charged the new staff to be diligent, honest, forthright, determined and focused in discharging their duties and emphasized that they must avoid acts that could tarnish their image and that of the hotel.

The Chairman added that protocols and due process must be followed in the delivery of the world-class services that has been designed to make the hotel a home away from home for the guests.

Those trained at the 3-day programme include the kitchen staff, security personnel, receptionists, drivers, and bar attendants.

  • Once upon a billion-naira hotel

    Once upon a billion-naira hotel

Looking at the ruins of Durbar Hotel, Kaduna, it hurts to recall that it was one of the best hospitality facilities in the region. It sprang up in 1977 inspired by the ambitious Festival of Art and Culture (Festac) of that year. Created, as it were, in the image of that grand feast, the hotel was built to accommodate Festac’s high-profile horse riders. But soon after, its classy facilities and services caught the fancy of other lodgers with taste, attracting dignitaries even from overseas. Naturally, it was named Durbar Hotel, after the horse race.

Located strategically along the ever-busy Independence Way in the heart of Kaduna, the Kaduna State capital, Durbar was clearly the best hospitality outfit in the state. It has since become a shadow of itself, providing shelter not for celebrities but reptiles and other creatures. Part of the premises has been converted to a motor park for visitors to the headquarters of the Nigeria Air Force training school.

The Nation gathered that the Obasanjo military regime built the edifice occupying a land area of about 400 by 600 sq. meters in two months at the cost of 100,000 pounds. It was built at the same time as the FESTAC Hotel, Lagos, which was called Durbar Hotel before it changed name. The hotel is now a complete wreck.

Investigation revealed that after the national fiesta, Durbar Hotel was handed over to Arewa Hotel, a conglomerate of New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC) to manage. The hotel functioned well during the military era, providing first-class accommodation for government’s guests and others up till the Third Republic when it was sold under the government’s privatisation and commerciali-sation plan of the Babangida regime.

The late Kano-based business mogul and airline operator, Alhaji Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo bought the hotel in 1992 from the Technical Committee on Privat-isation and Commercialisation (TCPC) led by the late Dr. Hamza Zayyad. Kabo, as he is popularly called, paid N90 million for the hotel. Some say he did his best to put the hotel on the road to success. Still, Kabo’s efforts fell far short. Sources close to his family told The Nation that Kabo was to sell 40 per cent shares of the property to the public with over 70 shareholders subscribing.

He was again to sell his shares, in 1996, to Nasimatume Investment Limited which took over management of the hotel in 1997 after the deed of transfer was completed between Kabo Holdings and Nasimatume. Mohammed Abacha, chair of the company and son of General Sani Abacha, who many believed owned Nasimatume, engaged a management team to run the hotel.

At its closure, the federal government moved to recover the hotel from Nasimatume. Many people saw the move as part of the Obasanjo administration’s onslaught against the Abacha family. The government sited irregularities in the sale of the property by the TCPC. They also claimed that Kabo Holdings which bought it from the government only paid N27 million out of the N90 million while the balance of N63 million was obtained from the Federal Ministry of Defence and passed through Kabo Holdings.

In a suit they filed, the government and the BPE alleged that Kabo Holdings or Nasimatume Investments didn’t follow due process in buying the hotel, arguing, among others, that Abacha’s company was not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission when the transfer was made, while Kabo Holdings didn’t inform the BPE before transferring its shares to Nasimatume.

Hoodlums have since stripped the hotel of all valuables, including doors, window blinds, water cisterns, toilet facilities, curtains, aluminum roofing sheets, generators and others. Who sent them, if any did, is hard to tell.

After the vandalism, the Abacha family filed a law suit in Kaduna challenging the seizure of the hotel. In 2005, it was determined that the BPE and the government could not prove that the sale and transfer of the shares didn’t follow due process. The judgement gave a sigh of relief to workers of the hotel who hoped that all the controversy was over. Nothing happened.

Alhaji Tajudeen Tijjani Ajibade, a veteran journalist who covered the commissioning of the Hotel and FESTAC ’77, said the Durbar story is an irony. He said, “There was nobody in Nigeria who was somebody at that time, from the FESTAC time to the First and Second Republics, Buhari and Babangida regimes that didn’t know about Durbar Hotel. It was at Durbar Hotel that I first interviewed the late Chief M.K.O Abiola when he came to Kaduna with his children. It was also at Durbar Hotel I met the late Chief Toye Coker, the Agboko of Egbaland, a lawyer. It was also here I met the late Ahmed Kusamotu who later became the national chairman, National Republican Convention (NRC). It was at Durbar Hotel we met ministers coming in; in fact, it was in this same place I met the late Group Captain Tony Ikhazobor. These are the people we met.

“I’m talking about the 70s and 80s. So, for Durbar Hotel to have become like that is unfortunate. It was in Durbar I met the late Inusa Oshiogwemoh even though we first met when we were young men at sea.  He was a sailor and I was a maintenance officer there. At that time, they took us to many places. When he came back to Durbar Hotel he became the Chief Engineer.

“It was in Durbar Hotel in the Second Republic that Chief Obafemi Awolowo addressed the largest press conference. The same Durbar you’re seeing was where Alhaji Shehu Shagari was picked as the presidential candidate of National Party of Nigeria (NPN). So, we know Durbar, in this same hotel Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe met with the late Isaiah Balat and Madaki Ali to bring about the NPP. ”

He said further that everything that was going on in Kaduna, the North and indeed Nigeria politically at that time after the military left, took place in Durbar Hotel.

“It’s a sad memory when people like us now drive past Durbar Hotel to see it like this]; I laugh to remember that once upon a time there was a place called Durbar Hotel. Today I’m still alive to see Durbar in this deplorable condition and I weep for my country. We started the story of this one buying it today and that one buying it tomorrow. Suddenly, Durbar Hotel started losing the glamour it used to be known for. At the end of the day, the case of who owns Durbar went to court and up till today, nobody has come out to tell us whether Federal Government owns Durbar Hotel or not.”

When The Nation visited the abandoned property, it was discovered that the structure was still solid, even though it has been abandoned for several years. A security guard overseeing the place claimed that strangers are not allowed into the premises. The guard who identified himself as Amos said he was employed by the Abacha family to watch over the premises, pointing out that he has been doing that for about 10 years now. Even though Amos claimed to know very little about the glorious days of Durbar Hotel, he said it was the owner of Kabo Air that bought the property from the Federal Government and after finding it difficult to manage, approached the sitting government to take back the property from him at 50 per cent of its cost.

According to him, “the Federal Government then refused to take it back. They asked him to look for a buyer on his own. That was how Alhaji Ibrahim Abacha got wind of the development and bought the property from Dan Kabo. But, along the line, the Federal Government took the Abachas to court, claiming ownership of the property. All that happened after the death of Dan Kabo, Ibrahim Abacha and General Sani Abacha. But the court later stopped the Federal Government from taking the property. So, as it is now, this hotel is Abacha family’s property”.

Amos said there was once a sign in the past that it would be resuscitated, but it never happened.

He based his opinion on the fact that a property manager office is being erected at a corner of the hotel premises. He also claimed that the presence of security guards inside the premises has prevented hoodlums from converting it to their hideout.

Speaking to The Nation on the phone, Mr Atabo, a lawyer for the Abacha family, said that his client  won the case, adding that the government later appealed it.

From a facility of choice in the 70s and 80s to a controversial investment item, Durbar Hotel, which once lifted people’s spirits has been a persistent source of heartache.

  • Global hotel brands eye Nigeria

The President of the White House Hotel, Ikeja, Mr. Austin Eruotor, has said many global brands are eyeing the country, despite the challenges facing it.

He said the country has witnessed lots of negative perceptions, but they have not prevented foreign hotel brands from coming into the country.

“It is a big market and so many brands, mainly international ones, are coming to the country. These brands have realised that they make a lot of money in Nigeria because of our population, our oil industry, and we have a lot of other mineral resources, which encourage investment. Many investors in the world are realising that Nigeria is a place to be, despite our security challenges,” he said.

He said despite the influx of global hotel brands, the locally owned ones are not affected by the competition. While celebrating the 10th anniversary of White House, Eruotor said the growing fame of the Nigerian entertainment industry has provided the need for local hotels to rebrand and create unique offerings in other to remain in business.

“And when you look at the American economy, they are not doing well, and the European economy is at a standstill. Nigeria has become a beautiful bride of the world economy. There are lots of opportunities, which do not exist in America and Europe. Nigeria is now the place to be. Everybody is coming to Nigeria in spite of all the negative publicity we get. Our entertainment industry is really helping our local hotels to reposition and rebrand,” he noted.

Citing the experience of White House, he said in the past 10 years, the hotel has been able to stay afloat despite competition from global brands and it has ridden on the entertainment industry to remain a sustainable brand.

He said: “In the past 10 years, the facility has hosted programmes that featured celebrities such as P Square, Tuface, Dbanj, DZ Jeez, Tunde & Wunmi Obe and Timaya. White House Hotel turned 10 on October 1. You would agree with me that 10 years is not a joke in the life of any brand. We started as an entertainment/event centre, which was mainly a hall. Today, we are a full hospitality brand.”

  • Hotel guest ‘beaten up’ in Bayelsa

Hotel guest ‘beaten up’ in Bayelsa

A guest at Peretimi Hotels on Imgbi Road, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has alleged that the manager hired operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) to shoot him.

The customer, who identified himself as Preye Bozimo, said three suspected DSS operatives were led by the manager of the hotel to ‘beat him up’.

It was gathered that the victim is the son of the Chairman of the Governing Board, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Gordon Bozimo.

It was learnt that following the incident, the hotel was shut for about five days.

Bozimo, who hails from Bomadi, Delta State, spoke from his bed at the surgical ward of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.

The victim, a building contractor and founder of Prezimo Global Resources, said he and his cousin, Nathaniel Alaweremi, lodged in the hotel on September 30.

He said trouble started when he and his cousin started arguing in the room.

The quarrel, Bozimo said, attracted the hotel manager, whose office was opposite their room.

He said: “Last Tuesday, I came into Yenagoa and lodged at Peretimi Hotel on Imgbi Road. My cousin and I had an argument.

“The manager said we were noisy and didn’t think we could stay in the hotel. We told her to refund our money.

“ I told her that she was not supposed to treat her customers this way.

“She left and came in with three men. They were in suits and dark glasses, carrying two guns and a big rifle. Immediately, they asked my cousin to leave the room. They locked me inside.

“The next thing, I heard was a shot and I realised I had been shot in the stomach. They started hitting me. They took my money, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, watch, shoes and car key.

“When my cousin came, they threatened to shoot him in the leg. They took me to their station.

“I asked why they shot me like a criminal. They said they are security agents and they can do anything.”

His cousin, who corroborated the story, insisted that men of the DSS were hired by the hotel manager to beat and shoot his cousin.

DSS State Director Dawa Everest could not be reached for comments and the police said they were yet to get details of the incident.

  • ‘My husband caught me in hotel with another man’

    •She’s adulterous, man tells court

A 40-year-old liquor vendor, Mudirat Yusuf, has told a Customary Court in Lagos that she cheated on her husband, Hakeem Yusuf.

“Yes, it is true that my husband caught me in a hotel with another man, but we have settled it”, she told the Alagbado Customary Court, where her husband is asking for the dissolution of their 23-year-old union.

Yusuf, a fruit seller and commercial motorcycle operator, is alleging that his wife is adulterous.

He said: “The problem started 15 years after we got married. I hear some married women engage in extramarital sex, but I had never imagined my wife involving in such an undisciplined act. I was, however, embarrassed when my friends said they saw my wife and a man walk into a hotel.

“On that day, I had gone to join my friends at an open bar in the neighbourhood and while we were having fun, they suddenly chorused:

“So, you and your wife came to have some ‘nice time’ at the hotel today?” I smiled and told them that I left my wife at home with our children. But surprisingly, they said my wife had just entered the hotel opposite the bar.

“So, I waited for over 20minutes, after which my wife came out of the hotel accompanied by one of my colleagues. She was obviously shocked to see me. So, I went back home and threw out her belongings because I was very upset. Four years after, I took her back after several pleas by her relations. I was assured she had turned a new leaf.

“Sincerely, my wife assists me whenever there is a lull in my business, but I detest her adulterous lifestyle. My wife has never sought my help in most of the things she does. But she prefers to seek help from some other men.

“When one of my wife’s male customers died, it was only my wife who was informed. So, she stood as the deceased’s wife during the funeral. It is even more painful when my wife says the man was just her customer, yet she wakes up every night mentioning his name, with tears cascading her eyes.

“Recently, my wife told me she received an urgent call from her sister and I believed her. However, when I called to know her whereabouts, a man picked up the call, saying that the owner was busy. I thought I probably dialed a wrong number until the man picked up the call again, asking if I wanted my death certificate.

“So, I think I have tolerated her enough. I am fed up with her attitude and I don’t love her any more. Our second child should be in her custody, while I look after the other three children.”

While admitting that her husband caught her in a hotel with another man, Mrs Yusuf said they had resolved the issue, adding: “I am still pained by my customer’s death. So, once in a while, I lament his death because he came to my shop a few hours before he passed on that day. Since we got married, he has never introduced me to his relations. He doesn’t give me any allowance, but complains that I sell alcoholic drinks. He is temperamental. He once broke a bottle on my head when he saw some men in my shop, though he knows my customers are mostly men.

“It is true that a man, who is my spiritual father, picked my call and rained curses on him. It was later he informed me about what transpired between them. I do my responsibility as a wife and I still love him. So, I don’t want this marriage dissolved.”

The court’s President, Mr. Olubode Sekoni, advised the couple not to invade each other’s privacy and obey the law.

The case was adjourned till October 9, for hearing.

  • Man allegedly stabs girlfriend to death in hotel room

The Police have arrested a man for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death during a fight at Alapere, a Lagos suburb.

The incident occurred at a hotel on Tuesday evening. The suspect was handed over to the police by a hotel worker.

The victim’s family alleged that the suspect lured her to the hotel and attempted to chop off her breasts and fingers, apparently for ritual, adding that in the process the fight broke.

The hotel workers were said to have had a shout from the room, following which they forced the door open and met the deceased in a pool of her blood.

Efforts to save her failed as she reportedly died before reaching the hospital.

Her remains were deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary.

A bereaved relative, who asked not to be named, said: “What we heard was that on reaching the hotel, the suspect ordered for a drink. As our daughter was sipping hers, he brought out a pair of scissors and started cutting one of her breasts. She started screaming at that point. Not done, he cut one of her fingers and attempted to gag her so as to finish his satanic mission. Her scream alerted people who came to her rescue.

“We were told she gave this version when she was being rushed to the hospital. We were also told the boyfriend attempted to escape but was apprehended by the hotel staff before policemen from Alapere arrived. Her death has plunged everyone into sorrow and agony. All we want is for the police to interrogate him and find out why he killed our daughter.”

Police’s spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), confirmed the incident, saying: “Yes, we have such a case, but that is not how it happened. What happened was that a man stabbed his girlfriend with scissors in a hotel room during a fight and the lady was rushed to a hospital where she later died. The man is in our custody and investigation has begun.”

  • Lagos Airport Hotel rewards staff

    Lagos Airport Hotel rewards staff

THE management of the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja recently hosted staff of the hotel to a get-together. It used the opportunity to thank the staff for their hard work and integrity.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director, Mr. Kayode Adenigba, told the staff that without their input, the hotel would not make progress. He said: “I want to thank all of you for what you have done in 2013, and I promise you that 2014 shall be a better year in Jesus name. Our targets this year shall be achieved for the betterment of all of us. At the end of the year, I am sure we shall sit down and say we are making progress. There is a great development in every aspect of the hotel.”

Adenigba thanked the staff for working hard to see that the hotel did well. He said plans had already been put in place for this year and that based on the budget, he said the hotel staff would have cause to smile.

“ We have decided a budget for the company and the budget has been approved. The budget is based on a daily occupancy of 56 per cent. The profit for the year that envisaged is in the region of 258 million which would be about 10 to 15 per cent of the total budget . All the staff must work collectively to make the year a success.

“We are going to have competition, but we have to work extra hard to be ahead. We have to meet up with the expectations of the owners,”he said.

Adenigba said what had endeared the hotel to its customers is the level of honesty displayed by the workers, who whenever they come across any item misplaced or lost by guests, return them.

Among those that were rewarded were staff who returned amounts lost by guests. About 60 staff of the hotel were appreciated for their honesty. The best staff of the hotel were also appreciated with gifts and certificates.

More than 60 staff of the hotel were honoured for their integrity. Top among them was Mr. Seun Alabi who returned about N.5m a guest lost.

The Best Staff of the Year Award was won by Mr. Ebenezer Godunu of the Engineering Department.
