  • Housekeeper ‘steals’ Odegbami’s wife’s N150m jewellery

    A housekeeper, Rose Patrick, 25 was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N150million worth of jewellery from her employer, Mrs Oyindamola Odegbami.

    Oyindamola is said to be the wife of former Eagles star Chief Segun Odegbami.

    She was arraigned with her friend, Esther Pam and Mrs Odegbami’s driver Mohammed Abdulazeez (26) before Magistrate Y.O. Aje-Afunwa on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Peter Nwangwu said the defendants committed the offence on December 10, 2016 at Mrs Odegbami’s residence at Bourdillon Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.

    He said Mrs Odegbami discovered that her jewellery and some personal effects were missing from her bedroom.

    The prosecutor listed the missing personal effects to include: “a set of Roberto Coin Gold set valued at $15,000 (N7.5million), a set of Van Clef Diamond and Gold Butterfly Jewellery valued at $50,000 (N25million).

    “A dangling gold jewellery set valued at $50,000 (N25million), a set of black and white diamonds valued at $75,000 (N37.5million), a plain gold set valued at $15,000 (N7.5million).

    “A big set of gold and diamond encrusted pendant valued at $50,000 (N25million) as well as other valuable personal and household items such as an Ipad, three Blackberry mobile phones, six Ankara fabrics etc,” he said.

    According to the prosecutor, Mrs Odegbami on noticing that the items were missing, realised that her housekeeper, who never returned to work after her vacation might have stolen them.

    Nwangwu said the complainant reported the theft to the police which arrested Patrick at the home of her boyfriend, Corporal Mathias Hussein, a mobile policeman of Mopol 43, Lion Building, Obalende, Lagos.

    According to him, investigations also revealed that Abdulazeez and Pam, had aided Patrick in carrying the items in suitcases from Mrs Odegbami’s home.

    “On interrogation by the police, Patrick admitted stealing Mrs Odegbami’s household items and personal effects but denied taking the jewellery.

    “The property she admitted stealing were recovered from the Mobile Police Barracks residence of her boyfriend Corporal Hussein at Obalende, Lagos,” Nwangwu said.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Counsel to Mrs Odegbami, Mr Kennedy Osunwa, said Corporal Hussein, was yet to be arraigned in court with the other accused.

    “The police are yet to charge and arraign Corporal Mathias Hussein, for conspiracy and retention of stolen property in his official residence,” Osunwa said.

    Magistrate Y.O Aje-Afunwa granted the accused N2million bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    Aje-Afunwa said the sureties must be homeowners who must provide evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government

    She adjourned the case until September 15.

  • ‘How housekeeper killed his employer’s mother’

    An Ikeja High Court yesterday heard how a housekeeper, Christian Yavine, slit the throat of Mrs Mariam Abiola, 79, his employer’s mother.

    Yavine, who is from Republic of Benin, was 18 when the incident happened in 2014.

    Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr Akin George, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Inspector Godgift Moses, told Justice Toyin Ipaye that on July 3, 2014, he and Adetunji Fisayo Assistant Superseding of Police (ASP), visited the crime scene.

    The IPO whose evidence was translated to French by an interpreter for Yavine’s sake, said there was a lot of blood on the mattress and the pillow in the room where Abiola was murdered.

    He said: “Our investigation team proceeded to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital  (LASUTH) Ikeja to inspect the remains of the deceased.

    “On close observation, we found that there was a deep cut across the throat of the deceased and she had several minor cuts on her neck which shows a sign of a struggle”.

    Asked how he became the IPO of the case, he said: “I am a police Inspector attached to the Homicide Division of the State Criminal Investigation Department  (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

    “I met the defendant on July 2, 2014 at 4pm while I was on duty at the SCID, I received the original case file and the exhibits were handed over to me.

    “The defendant spoke Yoruba language but I did not understand, so I asked a colleague, Sergeant Adeola Lawal, to translate the language to English for me.

    “On July 7, 2014, we served the pathologist, Prof John Obafunwa, with the coroners form and an autopsy was conducted by Obafunwa’s office to find out the primary cause of death.”

    The prosecutor showed Moses two long kitchen knives, a black rope and a long pestle allegedly used in committing the crime.

    The IPO identified them and they were marked and admitted as exhibits by Justice Ipaye.

    Yavine was said to have committed the offence on July 1, 2014 at Block 74, Flat 2, Ijaiye Low Cost Housing Estate at Pen Cinema, Agege, Lagos.

    He allegedly stabbed Abiola repeatedly in the throat with a kitchen knife.

    The incident happened after the late Abiola’s daughter, Mrs Joke Akinsemoyin, left home for a vigil.

    Trial continues tomorrow.

  • Housekeeper ‘steals’ employer’s $4,000

    Housekeeper, Toni Aripko yesterday appeared before a Tinubu Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for alleged theft of his employer’s 4,000 dollars.

    Aripko, 23, who was living with his employer at Kyalami Weadows Street, Victoria Island, is facing a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sergeant Andohemba Koti said the accused committed the offence at the residence of his employer, Mr Jasper Nwachukwu.

    Koti told the court that Aripko, while cleaning his employer’s master bedroom, opened his wardrobe and removed the money.

    “The accused later absconded to his village in Cross-River with the money after lying to his boss that his father died and that he needed to travel.

    “It was shortly after the accused‘s departure that the complainant discovered that the money had disappeared from his wardrobe,” he said.

    Koti told the court that the complainant alerted the accused’s guarantor, Etim Aku of Jakande Estate, Lekki, who lured him back to Lagos after all efforts to arrest him had failed.

    Aripko pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate L.A. Owolabi, granted him N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till August 31.

    A 23-year-old housekeeper, Idowu Adeyeye, was brought before an Abule-Egba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos yesterday for allegedly stealing her employer’s jewellery valued at N4.6 million.

    The accused, who lives with her employer at Ijaiye Medium Housing Estate, Ijaiye, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and causing a breach of peace.

    Prosecuting Inspector Racheal Williams told the court that the offences were committed on May 28 at his employer’s residence.

    According to her, the accused with others still at large stole jewellery valued at N4.6 million, property of the complainant, Mrs Titilayo Ogundipe.

    “The complainant got home from work to discover that the door to her room was opened and all her gold jewellery were missing.

    “The housekeeper disappeared after the incident, but was later arrested following a tip-off,’’ Williams said.

    The offence, she noted, contravened Sections 166 (d), 278 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    The accused pleaded innocence.

    Magistrate Adenike Shonubi granted Adeyeye N2.5 million bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She adjourned the case to June 15 for trial.
