  • Couple ‘batters’ nine-year-old housemaid

A COUPLE,   Valentine and Stella Anyakaora, has been arrested for allegedly battering their nine-year-old maid, Favour Chiamaka.

The incident occurred at 2, Dominic Street, Ijegun, on the outskirts of Lagos.

They were arrested by policemen attached to Ijegun, Satellite Division following a complaint by a rights group.

A man was said to have seen the child looking scruffy with an injury, which was almost chopping off on her fingers.

The man was said to have realised that she was being maltreated after questioning her.

The couple, it was learnt,  brought her to Lagos from the east after promising her parents that  they would  train her.

A social media user, Iyke Nzelibe, said there were obvious marks of violence on the child’s body, adding that she lived under torture; was subjected to hard labour and was poorly fed.

Nzelibe said: “The poor girl was sent on an errand yesterday to buy something when a good samaritan met her in a nearby store with decayed, maggot feasted fingers.

“The good samaritan intervened by getting human rights involved in the case. The woman’s husband was arrested. His wife was nowhere to be found. Mothers, please, be mindful of the people you give your kids to.”

Police spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP),  said the suspects would be charged to court  after investigation.

Housemaid, step-dad bag three years for conspiracy, theft

AN Igbosere Magistrates’ Court yesterday sentenced a housemaid, Happiness, 18, and her step-father, Gabriel Igbang, 30, to three-and-a-half years’ imprisonment for stealing N1,150,000 from a Lagos Island apartment.

Magistrate A. T. Omoyele convicted them after Happiness pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing; Igbang pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property.

The court heard that they committed the offences on June 26, at about 8pm, at 30, Massey Street, Lagos Island.

Mrs Omoyele found Happiness guilty of conspiracy and stealing and sentenced her to two-and-a-half years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Igbang, the second defendant, was convicted of receiving stolen property and was jailed one year without an option of fine.

Before the sentences, the magistrate asked the defendants if they had anything to say. Happiness, who did not look remorseful, declined; her step-father said: “The only mistake I made is that I didn’t send her back to her employer with the money when she came to my house.”

Earlier, prosecuting Sergeant Cyricaus Osuji told the court that Happiness sometime in May was contracted by the complainant, Mrs Bolanle Ibukunoluwa, through one Iya Dolapo, as a housemaid.

He said Happiness earned N7000 monthly, payable at the end of the year, after which the first defendant moved to her mistress’ house.

Last June 26, at about 5:30pm, the complainant returned from work at about 8pm and discovered that she had been locked out and Happiness could not be found.

She forced the gate open and discovered that her Lenovo phone, valued at N20,000, was missing. The N1,150,000 she kept in her room was also missing.

Osuji added: “Immediately the complainant saw that her money and phones were missing, she enquired from her neighbours whether they knew her maid’s whereabouts and they said she was seen leaving just before 8pm. So she reported the matter at the police station

“The first defendant was apprehended by the police at Benin City, Edo State, where she ran to, after giving her step-father the money she stole.

“During interrogation, Happiness’ mother and the second defendant admitted collecting money from her, so she took the police to a spot in a bush in Ogun State, where a cash sum of N300,000, was recovered. Another sum of N252,500 was also recovered at another location in the bush.”

The prosecutor added that when the first defendant was arrested, the complainant’s phone was found with her as well as N20,000 cash, which she admitted was part of the stolen money.

“She later told the police that her boyfriend, Samuel, advised her to steal the money.

“She also said she only stole the sum of N600,000, while the second defendant, her step father, said he gave N500,000 of the money to his wife,” Osuji said.

    Police brutality: Housemaid seeks justice

A police corporal attached to one Mr Aderemi Oladapo, has allegedly beaten his principal’s housemaid to coma.

The corporal from Golden Gate Police Station accused Ms Stella Abel, 43, of stealing her boss N2 million.

Ms Abel, it was gathered, was employed in August by Mr Oladapo’s daughter.

Narrating her ordeal, she said: “I was employed by Madam Eniola as her father’s cook. Whenever he travels, I go to his son’s house (Mr Akinola Aderemi) to take care of their children. We were two ladies working for the family; myself and Maria Johnson who lives with my boss’s son.

“I returned home on that day from his son’s house and I saw three police officers who asked me about some missing money. I told them that I knew nothing about the money since I don’t have access to my boss’s room. They threatened to beat me.

“One of the policemen, the corporal, hit me on my face, kicked me on my leg and threw me on the floor. I was also sent out of the house around 11:25p.m.”

Ms Abel said efforts to get the police officer’s identity have been futile, adding:”I know he is called Jolly, his colleague and the investigation police officer (IPO) attached to the station, Mr Tope declined to identify the officer.

“I don’t think they lost anything; the door was not broken or tampered with. Since they did not institute any case, I think it’s false accusation,” Ms Abel said.

Police spokesman, Joe Offor, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident but denied that Ms Abel was beaten by  men attached to Golden Gate Police Station.

“I don’t know Mr Aderemi Oladapo or men of the force attached to his company that beat Ms Abel; but I promise the matter would be investigated,” he said.

  • Housemaid stole my three turkeys — Ikpeba

Housemaid stole my three turkeys — Ikpeba

Former Super Eagles ace Victor Ikpeba made a bizzare but peharps funny update on his Twitter account on Monday when he disclosed that just hours to yesterday’s Christmas celebration, his housemaid made off with the three turkeys he had planned to celebrate the yuletide festivities with.

The ‘Prince of Monaco’, who on Monday night responded to the verbal attack made against him by West Brom ace Peter Osaze Odemwingie, did not, however, explain the circumstances sorrounding the theft. But he did disclose that the said maid was recently employed.

The tweet is reproduced verbatim as follows: Victor Ikpeba @IkpebaOfficial “My new house maid run away with my 3 turkeys yesterday.”

SportingLife was unable to determine if he had made the post in jest, but a scan of the former African Footballer of the Year’s message board suggests that most of his updates are made in a lighter mood.

“My christmas hat is singing song on my head. My coat is cuter than (Daniel, ed.) Amokachi’s coat. Hehehe i buy it in prada.

“This guys in the studio says Victor Moses looks like me? But i am beautiful than him,” are some of the ex-international’s recent Twitter messages.
