    State of Osun Governor Gboyega Oyetola has described the death of Second Republic President Shehu Shagari as a huge loss to the nation. He commiserated with Shagari’s family members, the people and government of Sokoto State and Nigerians. Shagari passed on in Abuja on Friday evening at the age of 93. According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Adeniyi Adesina, Governor Oyetola described the former president as a man of honour, who lived a life worthy of emulation.

    The governor said ex-President Shagari demonstrated politics without bitterness when he deservedly awarded the country’s highest national honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) to the leader of opposition Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in 1982

    He said although the honour was reserved for only presidents/heads of state, Shagari recognised the contributions of the late sage to nation building by his non-partisan action. Governor Oyetola added that Shagari maintained a dignified posture and respectability out of office. He urged today’s politicians to emulate the attributes of the late former president who served the country diligently and to the best of his ability in various capacities from the pre-independence era through the First Republic and eventually as Second Republic President between 1979 and 1983. He prayed that Allah will grant his family and Nigerians the fortitude to bear the huge loss.

  • Huge loss to Africa, humanity – Dogara

    The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, has described the death of former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan as a huge loss to Africa and humanity.

    Reacting to the news of demise of the former UN chief scribe via his official Twitter handle @YakubDogara, yesterday, he said the late Annan had etched his name on the sands of time as a true son of Africa.

    He also described the late Annan as a quintessential leader and accomplished diplomat, who dedicated his life time to the progress of humanity.

    Dogara added that the late Ghanaian diplomat was a true global ambassador, who used his life to promote peace across the world.

    “It is with a great sense of loss that I received the news of the passing on of former secretary general of the United Nations, Mr Kofi Annan.

    “Even with the awareness that death is an inevitable end, also for great men, it does not reduce the feeling of loss with which I received the news of Kofi Annan’s death.

    “His contributions to the advancement of the human race will never be forgotten. My heartfelt condolences to his family, Ghanaian government and the global community; May his soul find eternal rest in peace,” Dogara said.

    Lai Mohammed: a huge loss to creative sector

    The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has described the death of renowned author, poet, broadcaster and actor, Pa Adebayo Faleti, as a huge loss to the country’s Creative sector.

    In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the minister said Faleti was a trailblazer and a colossus across many genres, who left an indelible footprint in the Nigerian landscape.

    In a statement by his media aide, Mr Segun Adeyemi, the minister said generations of authors, poets, broadcasters and actors owe Faleti a debt of gratitude for his dedication, hard work and love for the country.

    He commiserated with the family and friends of the departed as well as practitioners in the sector.

    Mohammed prayed that God will comfort them and grant repose to the soul of the departed.

    Faleti was responsible for translating Nigeria’s national anthem from English to Yoruba.

    The late writer published a dictionary containing the formal or official use of Yoruba names.

    He received many awards – locally and internationally – including the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

    He also received the Festival of Arts award and the Afro-Hollywood Award for Outstanding Performance in Arts in 2002

    It’s a huge loss to Nigeria, says APC

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed deep shock and sadness at the sudden death of the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Zannah Umar Mustapha.

    In a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Moham m ed, the party described Zannah’s demise as a huge loss to his family, his party, his state and indeed to Nigeria.

    ‘’The suddenness of Alhaji Zannah’s passing has deepened the pain caused by his death,’’ it said, praying that God will comfort his family and give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

    The APC also commiserated with the people and government of Borno State over the Deputy Governor’s death, and prayed that God will grant repose to his soul.
