Spain deports 23 Nigerians for various offences

The Spanish Government on Tuesday deported 23 Nigerians for committing various offences in the country, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

They were deported barely five days after 34 Nigerians were sent home from six European countries for committing immigration-related offences.

NAN reports that 34 Nigerians were jointly deported by six European countries on June 22 for committing immigration-related offences.

The deportees were sent back home from Switzerland, Germany, Iceland, Austria, Belgium and Hungary.

NAN gathered that the new set of deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMlA) Lagos, at about 6.40 a.m on Tuesday.

The new deportees, comprising 21 males and two females, were brought back in a privilege style aircraft with registration number EC-IZO.

DSP Joseph Alabi, the spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development to NAN.

Alabi said that the deportees were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Police.

He said that others also on ground to receive them were officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to him, nine of the deportees, who were deported for drug-related offences, were handed over to the NDLEA.

He said that two others, who were deported for criminal offences, were handed over to the police.

Alabi said that the remaining 12 deportees, accused of breaching the country’s immigration rules, were profiled and allowed to go to their respective destinations.

  • Austria threatens to sue Hungary over migrants

Austria’s Interior Minister on Wednesday threatened to sue Hungary if it refused to take back migrants who had crossed their shared border, as political tensions mounted over immigration before presidential elections.

Austria’s government has been facing a challenge from the far-right Freedom Party.

It has repeatedly accused Hungary of letting migrants enter its territory in the face of EU rules that asylum seekers must stay in the first country they enter in the bloc.

Hungary, itself has been preparing for a referendum on whether to accept a Europe-wide asylum quota.

The Interior Minister, Wolfgang Sobotka while responding to a question on Hungary’s refusal to give ground said that most refugees enter its territory from other EU states.

“Notably from Italy and Greece, in a growing blame game.

“States or groups of states that permanently break the law have to expect legal consequences, in that case, the (Austrian) republic must sue.

“The republic must see that the European Union acts according to the law, full stop,” he said without specifying what legal process he was considering.

Budapest built a fence along its border with non-EU member Serbia to stem the flow of hundreds of thousands of people, many of them fleeing violence in the Middle East and North Africa.

Both Hungary and Austria had said that the situation was now broadly under control.

A Hungarian government spokesman dismissed Sobotka’s call in an emailed statement, saying “the vast majority of migrants had arrived in other EU states first.

“Hungary cannot and will not take responsibility for, and suffer the consequences of, the irresponsible conduct of other member states.

“Austria and Germany which expressly suggested ignoring the rules, or for other states like Greece that neglected to do their job,” the spokesman said.
Germany and Austria initially welcomed large numbers of refugees from the Middle East and Afghanistan.

However, Vienna started to toughen its asylum rules earlier this year and introduced an annual limit on the number of asylum requests it accepts.

Hungary aim for more power against Flying Eagles

Hungary have admitted they are working on having more power by the time they face the likes of African champions Nigeria at the U20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Hungary and Nigeria will clash in Group E on June 7.

The Hungary U20 squad and staff departed for New Zealand on Tuesday and  are due to arrive early today at their final destination of the town of New Plymouth, the scene of their three group matches.

“We travel to New Zealand with the team of the future, with players who have been able to play in the national teams at various age groups for several years,” said Storck, who has announced a final squad for the World Cup.

“The squad members have displayed only good form in training sessions and matches and have been selected on the basis of these performances. I have not paid attention to which leagues or clubs they play in.”

He added: “We stand ready for our task having been successful in training and in our warm-up matches but at the same time I wouldn’t say the condition of our team is yet 100%.

“We would still like to improve their strength and, as well as this, there is a need to fine-tune our tactics and specific training routines if we are to reach our target.”

  • Nigeria,Hungary pact yields 50 scholarships

The Nigerian and Hungarian governments have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the award of scholarships to 50 Nigerians to study for undergraduate and post graduate degrees in Hungarian universities.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, signed the MoU on behalf of the Federal Government while Dr Lazlo Palkovics, Hungarian Minister of State for Higher Education in the Ministry of Human Resources, signed for the Hungarian government.

A statement signed by Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant (Media) to Wike noted that the MoU, which is between the Federal Ministry of Education and the Hungarian Ministry of Human Resources on Educational Cooperation, will last from 2014 to 2016.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Wike said the Jonathan administration is happy with the new scholarship window provided by the Hungarian government for Nigerian students.

He assured that the government would ensure that only students who are academically sound get the scholarship.

“The Federal Ministry of Education is happy for the scholarship which your government has extended to Nigeria and we commend you. For us as Nigerians, we pledge our commitment to the implementation of this MoU,” he said.

Urging Nigerians to take advantage of the high quality Hungarian educational programme to empower themselves professionally, Dr Palkovics said the MoU would advance educational cooperation to higher levels that would benefit both countries.

  • FG urges Hungary to provide security for Nigerian Students

The Federal Government on Wednesday urged Hungary to provide security for Nigerian students in various universities across the East European country.

This is contained in statement signed by Simeon Nwakaudu, the Special Assistant, Media, to the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, in Abuja.

Wike made the request at a meeting with the Hungarian State Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Laszlo Szabo, in Budapest.

He said the request for the protection became necessary as more than 800 Nigerian students were studying in the country.

He said most of the students were residing off their respective campuses.

The minister called on the Hungarian Government to consider promoting concessionary fees for prospective Nigerian students, who intended to seek higher education in the country.

“Because of the number of Nigerian students already studying in Hungary and those who intend to study in the country, we are asking that you implement concessionary fees for our students.

“We are also reiterating our commitment to fully implement all the aspects of the memorandum of understanding signed with your Ministry of Human Resources on the award of scholarship to our students.

“We are pleased with the re-opening of the Hungarian Embassy in Abuja. This will ensure that prospective students get their visas there rather than in Kenya or Egypt.

“This relationship will develop on all fronts and our Ambassador has given assurance that applicants for business visa from your country will get favourable response.

“We believe that this bilateral relationship will lead to investments in other key areas of the Nigerian economy,’’ Wike said.

The statement also quoted Szabo as saying that the Hungarian government would further its cooperation with Nigeria in the areas of higher education and economic development.

Szabo called on Nigerian Government to expedite action on the signing of the proposed economic agreement to enhance development and promote bilateral trade relations.

He also urged Nigeria to fill the scholarship slots offered to the country as stipulated in the memorandum of understanding.

He said this would enable benefiting students to resume classes in September.
