Ibadan Mogajis, CCII, monarchs, others warn Alaafin against disrespecting Ladoja

The Mogajis in Ibadanland, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Monarchs, Baales, the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), and other prominent sons and daughters of the ancient city have cautioned the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, against taking Ibadan for granted.

The stakeholders stressed that the people of Ibadan would not accept any action capable of diminishing the status of the Olubadan stool or the Ibadan traditional system.

The position followed concerns that arose over a sitting arrangement involving the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, and a representative of the Alaafin of Oyo at a recent security meeting held in Ibadan.

In a statement signed by the President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, and the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative, Mogaji Dr Nurudeen Akinade, the stakeholders maintained that Ibadanland should not be regarded as subordinate to Oyo or any other town in Yorubaland.

The statement noted that Ibadan has consistently upheld its dignity and standing within Yoruba tradition and would continue to do so.

The group called on leaders across Yorubaland to engage the Alaafin of Oyo on the matter, adding that the peaceful disposition of the people of Ibadan should not be misinterpreted.

They also stated that the issue surrounding the chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs had been settled and should not be reopened.

The stakeholders further highlighted the background of Olubadan as a former senator, governor, and accomplished businessman, stressing that the stool should continue to be accorded due respect.

“Ibadan will never be a slave to anyone. Ibadanland has always maintained its dignity in Yoruba tradition, and this will not change.”

The statement highlighted Olubadan’s distinguished background as a former Senator, Governor, and successful businessman, emphasizing that he will not be subjected to any form of ridicule.

“Ibadan mesi, won o go” (Ibadan has spoken, we won’t go back), the statement concluded, indicating the resolve of the people of Ibadan to defend their dignity and tradition.

“Ibadanland deserves respect, and any attempt to undermine its traditional institutions will be met with resistance. The people of Ibadan are united in their determination to protect their heritage.”

Traditional rulers in Ibadanland, Mogajis, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), Baales, market men and women in Ibadanland and local security volunteers have appealed to organisers of planned nationwide protest to rethink their decision.

They described the planned protest as “ill-conceived” and capable of causing chaos and destruction across the country, most especially if turned violence.

A statement jointly signed by President of Ibadan Mogaji’s, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori and the Coordinator, Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade urged organisers of the protest to reconsider their plans and explore alternative means of expressing their grievances.

They noted the country was already facing numerous challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship, warning the protest could only exacerbate the situation.

The statement emphasised that the Mogajis are not against peaceful protests but stressed that such must be conducted in a manner that does not disrupt the peace and stability of Ibadanland, Oyo state and the country.

“We want to urge all the youths, agitators and others to recindle their decision, the last experience of endSARS protest is still there, many lives were lost, properties destroyed, Police station were burnt and many were injured, so, Ibadanland reject any form of protest,” they said.

The traditional Institution also expressed concern about the potential for the protest to be hijacked by hoodlums and miscreants, leading to violence and destruction.

They appealed to the government to address grievances of the protesters through dialogue and engagement, rather than resorting to force.

A Family heads in Ibadan, also called mogajis, have warned the five leading governorship candidates in Oyo State to desist from inducing its members with money or other incentives.

They dissociated themselves from some mogajis who have allegedly been extorting money from the candidates.

The family heads said they are only interested in good governance, not money or other incentives for individuals.

In a statement yesterday in Ibadan, the state capital, the mogajis’ spokesperson Wale Oladoja said electing the next governor would be based on the fear of God and the candidate’s antecedents.

Last week, the magajis issued a statement supporting five candidates among the 37 contesting for the governorship seat.

He urged the residents to exercise their civic right as independent adults.

The statement reads: “We will soon begin going to their family houses to find out their positive impacts on their relatives. We want to know their pedigree and antecedents: what they have done to better the lives of their people.

“We called on the people of Oyo State to cooperate with our members when they get to their family houses, to reveal the truth to whoever is coming to represent their families so that we can have the best people in government.

“We need the support of the media, religious bodies, traditional institutions and all the residents of Oyo State to support us in our effort to make the state great again. It is our state and we deserve the best.

  • Don’t incite authorities against us, say Ibadan Mogajis

Ibadan Authentic Mogajis yesterday  warned individuals and groups against inciting the authorities against them.

Rising from a meeting at the palace of Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, they said this would enable peace to reign.

Citing a newspaper report in which Kano-based Prince Muji Armstrong-Bello urged them to obey the court judgment voiding their elevation as kings; the Mogajis insisted they have violated no law.

A statement signed by Alhaji Abass Oloko (Mogaji Oloko), Chief Abduljelyl Karheem (Mogaji Adanla), Alhaji Moshud Gbolagade (Mogaji Akere) and Alhaji Ademola Oladosu (Mogaji Olasomi) queried the Kano-based prince on matters affecting the age-long traditional institution in Ibadan.

Armstrong-Bello viewed the threat by the Mogajis to the sacked Obas to stop wearing beaded crowns “as provocative and inciting, warning that unless law agencies intervened, there could be a breakdown of order.”

But the Mogajis decried such position.

  • Why Olubadan won’t attend peace meeting with Ajimobi – Mogajis

Why Olubadan won’t attend peace meeting with Ajimobi – Mogajis

The Authentic Mogajis in Ibadan rose from a meeting on Monday and asked the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji and the Osi Olubadan, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, not to have any peace meeting with Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, until the gunmen who invaded the Popoyemoja palace of Oba Adetunji are apprehended and brought to justice.

A truce committee was raised last week to midwife peace among the warring parties.

Those on the committee are the President of the Central Council of Ibadan indigenes, some members of Ibadan Elders’ Forum, religious leaders and opinion moulders, among others.

But the family heads at the end of their meeting told journalists they were making representations to the monarch and Ladoja to boycott the peace parley.

Their spokesman, Chief Wale Oladoja, said: “we deliberated extensively on last week’s attack on the palace, the peace parley and the security implications of the Oba’s palace invasion, among other issues.

“We are worried that a week after the incident and the governor’s insistence that he knew those who attacked the palace, the suspects are yet to be apprehended and brought to book. Yet they are talking of peace parley. Could they be talking about peace if the Kabiyesi’s life had been exterminated by the palace invaders?

“We align with the position of Yoruba Socio-cultural group Afenifere that the governor should fish out the gunmen and make them to face prosecution. The police should also conclude their investigation on time and bring the suspects to justice. Anything short of this, we are ready to hold a mega rally and demand same from the authorities concerned.

“The Mogajis also reviewed the list of panel members of the truce committee and we have our reservations because many of them especially the CCII and Ibadan elders have compromised and would be too biased in their judgment. So, we shall impress it on Kabiyesi and High Chief Ladoja to stay away from such arrangement. We will welcome a situation whereby those mediating are the religious leaders of the three major faiths – Christian, Islam and the traditionalists and not people whose antecedents are well known and are therefore predictable.

“The CCII and Ibadan elders have already supported the reform to the 1959 Ibadan Chieftaincy declaration and nobody is ready to listen to them. The CCII is a social group and they should stick to what they are known for and stop speaking for all Ibadan sons and daughters who are stoutly in support of the preservation of Ibadan cultural heritage and norms.”

  • Ibadan Mogajis back Ajimobi

The Ibadan Council of recognised Mogajis has supported Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s proposed review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

It advocated the introduction of second-class Obaship in Ibadanland, saying “this is a positive way to reduce the steps to be climbed by a prospective Olubadan.”

The council, in a memorandum to the Secretary of the Judicial Commission of Enquiry on the Review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy Panel, signed by the Chairman of the Council’s Succession Reform Commission, Chief John Babatunde Soares as well as Chief Asimiyu Adepoju and Chief Isiaka, insisted that “this is the only way to ensure speedy and accelerated development in Ibadanland as well as enhance the image of Olubadan stool.”

“Under the proposal, the Olubadan of Ibadanland will be the only first- class Oba and he will be addressed as His Imperial Majesty, while the High Chiefs will become second-class Obas in their administrative areas and be addressed as His Royal Majesty,” the Council added.

Saying the Council was formed over 70 years ago, the signatories said in the memorandum that the Abese, Maye, Ekefa, Agbaakin and Jagun will be in Otun Olubadan line and the Balogun line will comprise Abese, Maye, Ekefa, Agbaakin, Aare Alaasa and Jagun.
