Rescind your decision to rename our institution, Ibadan Poly Alumni begs Makinde

The Alumni Association of The Polytechnic, Ibadan has appealed to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to reverse his decision to rename the institution after the late former governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo.

In a statement issued by the Acting National President, Prof. Akinloye Lawal, the alumni said the institution has built a global reputation over the past 50 years and that altering its name would undermine its hard-earned legacy and recognition in the academic world.

Governor Makinde had announced the renaming during a commendation service in honour of Olunloyo, who was said to be the first Rector of the institution. However, the alumni argued that the move, though well-intentioned, could create significant complications.

“The Polytechnic, Ibadan, is a globally respected brand. Renaming it would not only be a disservice to the Yoruba race but also force the institution to start afresh in seeking recognition among its peers,” the statement read.

The alumni further warned that graduates would face verification challenges with certificates and transcripts both locally and internationally.

They urged the governor to consider the emotional attachment millions of Nigerians have to the name, emphasising that The Polytechnic, Ibadan, is a legacy of the entire Western region and should be preserved as such.

“Even the unnecessary cost of changing the records and documents of the institution will be enormous at this moment of economic downturns.

“If this honour was done to H.E. Dr. Omololu Olunloyo in recognition of his being the first Principal of The Polytechnic, Ibadan for less than six months, and your Excellency believed that he should be honoured, it should be based on logical facts and proper analysis, not emotion.

“We acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Olunloyo to The Polytechnic, Ibadan (TPI), but we cherished the brand name of the institution that has stood the test of time.

“Your Excellency, being an alumnus of the famous University of Lagos and an ‘Akokite’ you know that it is only a Hall of Residence – Eni Njoku Hall- that was named after the 1st Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG and also at the University of Ibadan, it was only a Hall of Residence – Mellanby Hall – that was named after the first Principal of University of Ibadan.

“Naming any of our hostels or even our famous faculty of Engineering after Dr. Qlunloyo is a good alternative that will not affect the brand name or image of TPI.

“We implore you to please find something within or outside The Polytechnic, Ibadan to name after Dr. Omololu Olunloyo as one will just downgrade status of this institution of international repute that is very dear to the hearts of most of us who were opportuned to have passed through it.

“Nigerians appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to rescind his decision to rename the University of Lagos after Bashorun MKO Abiola, and he listened. Ibadans appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to give an Ibadan man the opportunity to be the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan after 73 years of its existence on our land, and he agreed.

“We, the National Executive Council of The Polytechnic Ibadan Alumni Association, on behalf of all past and current students of this great institution, appeal to Your Excellency to please have a rethink on the issue of this change of name.

“This will, therefore, not be something new if, in your exalted position, you consider the wider and long-term implications of the name change.

“Kindly recall, sir, that when the name of the famous Ibadan Boys High School was to be changed to Timothy Oyesina Boys High School, it was the Old Students Association under the respected Chief Bode Amoo that appealed to the government not to tamper with the brand name.

“The government obliged and named a hall after the individual. The government lost nothing by this gesture. We appeal to Your Excellency to treat the issue of TPI in the same manner. This kind gesture will not diminish the status of Your Excellency nor that of your administration.

“Your Excellency, kindly hearken to our passionate and clarion call.”

  • NGO launches project to eradicate street kids

A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Children Palm City Foundation Inc., has launched a project, titled: “The Eradication of the street child and the influx,” to get children off the street and build a secured future for them.

At the launch/inauguration of its board meeting yesterday in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, the foundation’s Chairman Dr Adefunke Wellington said the project, which is backed by the United Nations (UN), seeks to remove every child from the street in Nigeria, build a city to educate, accommodate, employ and feed the children.

She said: “The menaces caused by street children cannot be overemphasised, and the neglect on them poses a threat to the society. They end up getting involved in criminal activities, like war-mongering, sex trade, child slavery, terrorism and robbery.

“Children are the future of every country; we must show them love and they will become better persons in the society tomorrow.”

Dr Wellington added: “With this project, we will educate children from crèche to the university level. As they graduate, jobs will be waiting for them. We will also feed them. We will build a university, build factories to engage the street children. We will build this city across states in the country and an NGO that will probably only cater for children till secondary level can bring them to us for further education, instead of putting them back on the streets.”

The foundation chief stressed that Nigeria is the pilot scheme for the project, adding that it will spread across Africa.

She said: “The project is to help those children on the street, either as a result of war-ravaged countries, death of parents, epidemics, natural disasters, overpopulation or poverty.

“There are NGOs everywhere, but what makes our own unique is that we are also centred on those children who will be the next to go to the street. These are the children who are in orphanage or in homes living with poor parents who are unable to give them befitting education or can no longer be controlled by their parents and already want to hit the street.

“Most NGOs are focusing on the children that are already on the street and have trained some to be good leaders. But our focus is to prevent the next set of children who are ready to be on the street from going there. We will bring them into the city to train them to have a good future and to live in the way of God.

“Our problem in the world and not only in Nigeria is that we do not train our children in the way of God. That is why they are on the street. When children are trained in the way of God, there will be peace in the land.”

  • Slain victim not ex-CSO of Ibadan Poly, says management

Authorities of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has said the slain person in the cult incident on Monday night was not their chief security officer.

Management added that he was not even a student.

The institution said the incident occurred outside the school premises.

Public Relations Officer Mr Soladoye Adewole spoke with reporters during a protest by students on Tuesday, following the death of Ahmed Olalekan, popularly known as Maku.

The deceased was said to be a member of The Student Forum, an anti-cultism group, comprising current and ex-students of the school.

The Forum is registered and has been on campus for about 20 years.

Soladoye said management would always support the fight against cultism, but described as unfortunate reports that the group knew about the attack.

He said: “What happened in Monday night occurred in a neighbouring community, which is Apete. The place is not within the security coverage of The Polytechnic, Ibadan. Of course, we learnt and we are aware that somebody was killed and that person passed through this institution, which made him an ex-student. But whatever transpired outside the school, we have no control over such situation. The institution is in session and nobody has closed down the institution. But the low turnout of students on the campus today (yesterday), of course, may probably be a fallout of what happened yesterday.

“Then, I am using this medium to reassure all students and other stakeholders that the institution is in session and of course, there is peace in the institution.”

While explaining the identity of the deceased, Chairman of Student Forum Council of Elders Mr Temitope Oyedele confirmed that Ahmed, was one of their members and was killed by suspected members of the Black Axe confraternity around Apete.

He noted that the forum is battles secret cults within and outside the campus.

Oyedele debunked alleged reports the deceased was the chief security officer of the institution.

Speaking in front of the Assembly Hall on North Campus, Oyedele said Maku was a National Diploma graduate of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.

According to him, he had played vital roles in maintaining peace within and outside the campus.

He said the deceased was well known by the security unit, and had, on many occasions, liaised with the Apete Police Station to forestall activities of unscrupulous students and cultists.

The chairman also discredited reports that the deceased was a cultist or that the death was as a result of cult clash in the institution.

“Many was a very brave, intelligent, vibrant and active in the fight against secret cultism throughout his life as a member of the Forum. On this note, we hereby affirm that Maku was never a member of a secret cult as it is being rumoured and that the Student Forum is not an alternative cult group that will take vengeance on behalf of the departed soul.

‘’However, we are calling on the security agencies, particularly the Police, to carry out comprehensive investigation in order to bring the killers of this innocent soul to justice”, Oyedele said.
