    Two dismissed Army officers nabbed for robbery in Ibadan

    Two dismissed Army corporals, David Okhaie and Balogun Afolabi, have been arrested by the Nigeria Police, Oyo State Command for armed robbery.

    The robbers specialises in dispossessing the public of their vehicles at gunpoint.

    In a statement, the state Police spokesman, Ayanlade Olayinka said the duo were arrested following credible intelligence.

    Ayanlade said a search led to the recovery of three vehicles, including: a Toyota Camry, Toyota Corrolla, a Lexus RX 350 and one Super Cargo motorcycle.

    “The suspects were identified as David Okhaie, male, 48 years, of Ojoo Area, Ibadan, a dismissed Corporal of the Nigerian Army with Service Number 2005NA/…./…., who falsely paraded himself as an Army Captain, and Balogun Afolabi, male, aged 43 years, of Wakajaiye Area, Ibadan, also a dismissed Corporal of the Nigerian Army with Service Number 2011NA/…./……

    He said the suspects had admitted committing the crimes.

    He urged the public who may have lost their vehicles to armed robbery or theft, and whose vehicle descriptions match any of the recovered exhibits, to come forward to the state Police Command with valid proof of ownership and means of identification for verification and claim.

    Fire guts residential building, multi-million naira property in Ibadan

    A six room residential building at Block D5, Ifedapo Estate, Amuloko area of Ibadan, and properties worth millions of naira were razed by fire on Friday, a statement issued by the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr. Moroof Akinwande has said.

    Akinwande explained the fire incident completely burnt down the bungalow.

    According to the statement, the agency received a distress call about the fire incident on Friday at exactly 2:53 p.m., from one Odetunde and immediately deployed firemen led by ACFS Amoo to the scene.

    “Upon arrival, it was a bungalow of six rooms engulfed by fire and our officers swiftly got into action and prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings,” he said.

    The statement said that no casualties were recorded in the fire incident and attributed the cause of the fire to an explosion caused by domestic gas that spread to the entire building.

    “Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by the fire,” the chairman said.

    Akinwande advised members of the public to promptly call fire service and provide correct address whenever there was an emergency.

    The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, has advised mothers and caregivers to fully utilise the Primary Health Care Centre (PHC) facilities provided by the Lagos State Government, noting that the centres are strategically established to ensure accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services at the grassroots level.

    This statement was made recently during a medical outreach programme organised by the Lagos State Health District V for residents of ibeshe riverine area of Oriade LCDA.

    Asiyanbi expressed concern over the low level of patronage at the Ibeshe Primary Health Care Centre. The Permanent Secretary disclosed that the facility records fewer than 20 patient visits per week and appealed to community members to take advantage of the healthcare services available to them.

    Dr. Asiyanbi further advised caregivers to promptly administer Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) to children experiencing diarrhoea and to immediately take such children to the nearest PHC if stooling occurs more than three times in a day, to prevent dehydration and other health complications.

    During the outreach programme, a range of healthcare services were rendered free of charge, including Medical Consultations, Eye Screening, Malnutrition Screening, Deworming for children, and Dental Examination, Scaling and Polishing, Tooth Extraction, as part of the State Government’s commitment to improving community health outcomes.

    Earlier at the event, Dr. Asiyanbi visited the newly renovated Ibeshe Primary Health Care Centre, where he inspected the facility and interacted with health workers to assess their welfare and ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services to residents.

    NAFDAC destroys over N55 billion worth of fake, banned, expired drugs in Ibadan

    The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed over N55 billion worth of fake, banned, substandard, unwholesome, illicit drugs and pharmaceutical products in Ibadan.

    NAFDAC said it has been charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the health of every Nigerian is safeguarded, and as such, is committed to eliminating SFs medical products, illicit drugs, unwholesome foods, chemicals, medical devices, and other products, and will continue to find ways to rid the nation of all volatile products.

    Speaking in Ibadan during the destruction exercise, the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that the routine exercise, which is in line with the Agency’s mandate, and a strategy aimed at preventing re-introduction of Expired, Substandard and Falsified (SFs) Medical Devices, as well as other Spurious, Unsafe and Unwholesome NAFDAC Regulated Products from being reintroduced into circulation. 

    Adeyeye, who was represented by the Agency Deputy Director, Pharmaceutical Division (Investigation and Enforcement, Papa Lagos), Mrs Florence Ubah maintained that the products being destroyed during the exercise are made up of substandard and falsified medical products, unwholesome processed food products and food additives, unsafe cosmetics, counterfeits and other expired NAFDAC regulated products seized by the Agency from manufacturers, importers, and distributors. 

    She said, “It is important to state that, up for destruction today are damaged and Expired products voluntarily handed over by more than seventy (70) compliant companies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and Trade Unions, to the Agency. This is commendable.

    “The estimated street value of the products being destroyed is worth N55,436,844,470 Fifty‑five billion, four hundred thirty‑six million, eight hundred forty‑four thousand, four hundred seventy naira only.”

    She thanked the Police, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and all stakeholders who have united in the fight against substandard and falsified medicines and other unwholesome regulated products.

    She, however, appealed to religious leaders, community leaders, health practitioners, journalists, and all Nigerians about the importance of educating their families and wards about the dangers of patronizing quacks and unauthorised medicine/food dealers. 

    She said everyone must actively participate in the fight, because it is a collective responsibility, adding that “together, we can protect the health and safety of all Nigerians.”

    Suspected gunmen kidnap APC chieftain in Ibadan

    A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Hon. Wale Oriade, has been kidnapped by suspected gunmen in Ibadan, the capital city.

    The incident, it was gathered, occurred around 7:10 PM on Wednesday at PJ Square Shopping Complex, beside NNPC Elewure, Iyana Ajanla, Akala Express, New Garage, Ibadan, where Oriade operates his office.

    Eyewitness accounts confirmed that the attackers arrived in a blue Micra vehicle with two occupants — a driver and a gunman, who was said to have forcibly seized the APC chieftain and whisked him away in the same vehicle. 

    The nature of the attack and the precision with which it was carried out have caused deep concern within his community.

    Sources explained that, after the kidnap operation, the victim was whisked to an unknown destination yet to be ascertained at the time of filing the reports.

    Also, no link has been established, nor has ransom been demanded from the families and political associates of the kidnapped victim.

    Confirming the incident, the APC Oyo state, in a statement signed by Hon. Mojeed Olaoya, Senatorial Chairman, APC Oyo South, and Hon. John Aremu, State Youth Leader, APC Oyo State, requested the immediate intervention of the Nigeria Police Force.

    It called on the Police authorities to launch a swift, coordinated, and intelligence-driven rescue operation to ensure the safe and unharmed return of Hon. Oriade.

    The statement read, “A timely rescue will not only bring relief to Hon. Oriade’s family also reassure the people of Oyo State that the Police Command remains proactive and committed to the protection of lives and property.

    “The Oyo State APC appreciates the efforts of the Command in maintaining law and order and urges heightened vigilance during this critical time.”

    Also, the former Senate leader and Chieftain of the APC, Senator Teslim Folarin, condemned the kidnapping of Oyo APC Chieftain, describing the incident as shocking and unacceptable.

    He called on security agencies to intensify efforts and ensure the immediate and safe rescue of Oriade.

    The statement reads in part, “This is a deeply troubling development. I urge our security operatives to deploy all necessary intelligence and resources to secure his prompt release. My prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

    Folarin also reiterated the need for tighter security collaboration across Oyo State to curb the growing wave of kidnappings and appealed to residents to remain calm while providing credible information that could aid the rescue operation.

    The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Southwest Zone, on Thursday destroyed counterfeit, substandard, and unwholesome pharmaceutical products valued at N20 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State.

    According to the agency, the routine destruction exercise aligns with its mandate to prevent expired, falsified, and unsafe medical products—as well as other NAFDAC-regulated items—from being reintroduced into circulation.

    Speaking during the exercise, NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health by eliminating illicit drugs, falsified medical products, unwholesome foods, and unsafe chemicals from the Nigerian market.

    Adeyeye, who was represented by the Deputy Director of the Pharmaceutical Division (Investigation and Enforcement), Papa Lagos, Mrs. Florence Uba, stressed that the agency would continue to intensify efforts to rid the country of all harmful and volatile products.

    She said, “The products being destroyed during this exercise are made up of Substandard and Falsified Medical Products, Unwholesome Processed Food products and food additives, Unsafe Cosmetics, Counterfeits, and other Expired NAFDAC Regulated Products seized by the Agency from manufacturers, importers, and distributors.

    “Up for destruction today are damaged and Expired products voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and Trade Unions, to the Agency.

    “The estimated street value of the products planned for destruction is N20,000,000,000 (twenty billion naira only.”

    She, however, commended the collaboration of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for its continued support in the fight against counterfeiters.

    “Custom handed over 25 containers to be destroyed, which include various pharmaceutical products and a reefer container for this destruction.

    “My appreciation also goes to the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and all stakeholders who have united in the fight against Substandard and Falsified medicines and other unwholesome regulated products

    “To the community leaders, health practitioners, religious leaders, gentlemen of the press, and all Nigerians, it is imperative that you educate your families and wards about the dangers of patronizing quacks and unauthorised medicine dealers.

    “NAFDAC calls upon everyone to actively participate in this fight; it is a collective responsibility. Together, we can protect the health and safety of all Nigerians.”

    Free health service at maiden convocation

    Adecom College of Business and Management, Egbeda, Ibadan, yesterday said it would provide free medical and health services to residents as part of activities to mark the first combined convocation ceremony.

    It is working in collaboration with the state through Egbeda local government and Oyo State Housing Corporation to provide palliatives for roads linking Egbeda Oja to the institution.

    Rector, Dr Adewale Adeshina, spoke at a briefing on events for the first combined convocation.

    He was with top officials, including: BoT Chairman, Joseph Olajimi, Registrar, Mrs Kikelomo Adeshina, Dean of School of Science and Communication Studies, Prof Layemo and Dean of School of Business and Management Studies, Afolayan Jamiu.

    The rector said over 1,700 graduates would receive Ordinary National Diploma and Higher National Diploma certificates from the two faculties of the institution.

    He said the number accumulated from 2020 to 2025, saying the ceremony would be held annually from next year.

    Adeshina said the graduates have not only been trained academically, they are also equipped with acceptable societal norms and values while also creating jobs through skill acquisition.

    He said the school is partnering some foreign institutions for study and exchange programmes for students, an effort he said is in the concluding stage and would materialise from next year.

    The rector noted that five individuals making impact in their field will be conferred with honorary diploma.

    On the road, he said it would be the institution’s Corporate Social Responsibility to the host communities, to make it more motorable for commuters.

    Speaking on the plan for the medical and health outreach, Olajimi said the effort would cover ophthalmic, dental, physiotherapy, general medical care check-ups, pelvic abdominal checks, Hepatitis B tests, among others, for both children and adults.

    He said medical experts in the concerned fields have been contacted and would be available with the necessary equipment to attend to people from across the capital city.

    Suspected robbers cart away huge sum, injure police officers in Ibadan

    Gunmen suspected to be robbers on Monday carted away an undisclosed huge amount of money from unsuspecting bank depositor of a new generation bank around Osuntokun Avenue, Ibadan.

    A Police officer on routine patrol was also severely injured during the incident.

    According to an eyewitness, the victim, a middle aged man, was trailed from the bank where he had gone to make withdrawal by the suspected gunmen.

    It was gathered the grey Nissan Primera with license plate number EPE 901 PS which the victim was occupying was crossed at Osuntokun area.

    The eyewitness said: “The unsuspecting victim was forcibly dispossessed of substantial amount of money by the suspected gunmen.

    “Also a police officer who was in a routine patrol was severely injured during the raid.”

    Confirming the attacks in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso said the robbery incident occured at around 8am along Secretariat Road, Agodi. 

    The statement reads in part, “A bank depositor traveling in a metallic grey Nissan Primera with license plate number EPE 901 PS was tracked and forcibly robbed of a substantial, yet-to-be-ascertained amount of cash.

    “Initial investigations indicate that an officer associated with the Oyo State Police Command sustained severe injuries during a confrontation that arose when his team on patrol engaged the suspects in a bid to thwart their further plans of causing chaos following the attack on the unsuspecting individual.

    “Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities, and the injured officer is currently receiving immediate medical attention at a secure healthcare facility.

    “In light of this incident, the Oyo State Police Command urges members of the community to come forward with any credible and timely information that may aid in the prompt apprehension of the suspects involved. 

    “We assure the public that an extensive investigation is underway, and updates will be communicated as they become available”.

    Fire incidents destroy properties worth millions in Ibadan, Ogbomoso

    Separate fire outbreaks in Ibadan and Ogbomoso, Oyo State, over the weekend have destroyed properties valued at millions of naira.

    In Ogbomoso, a residential building located in the Oke-Elerin area was gutted by fire, destroying six rooms and three shops. Although no casualties were reported, several valuables were lost in the incident.

    In Ibadan, a shopping complex in the Bibilari area of Bashorun was also affected by fire. However, only one of the twelve shops in the complex was damaged, thanks to the prompt intervention of the Oyo State Fire Services, which prevented the flames from spreading further.

    Confirming the incidents, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr. Moroof Akinwande, urged traders to be vigilant and adopt preventive measures against fire outbreaks.

    He emphasised the importance of equipping shops with functional fire extinguishers and learning how to use them properly to curb minor fire incidents before they escalate.
