  • IBBU maritime institute: NIMASA warns contractors

    The Nigerian Maritime Adminstration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has warned contractors handling the construction of the Institute of Maritime Studies Complex at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai that it would not compromise standards.

    The Chief Consultant to the agency, Alex Karpe gave the warning in Lapai while introducing the contractors handling the various aspects of the project to the university’s management.

    Stressing the importance the agency attaches to the project, which will be executed in phases, the Consultant urged the contractors to ensure that works are done according to specifications and schedule.

    He then said the first phase of the project will comprise of basic infrastructural facilities that would enhance learning, research and knowledge banking in the field of maritime studies.

    Karpe, an architect, added that construction of library/archives and Academic block of lecture theatre and auditorium as well as the administrative complex, Information Management Centre and access road, electricity supply, street light and water supply and distribution, will also be done in the first phase.

    The IBBU Vice Chancellor, Prof Ibrahim Adamu Kolo, applauded the federal government for establishing the Maritime Institute through NIMASA in the institution.

    He said the institute would assist the university in her developmental process of becoming one of the best centres of learning and research in the country.

    Kolo also commended the role of Chairperson, Senate Committee on Maritime Transportation, Senator Zaynab Kure in the establishment of the institute in IBBUL.

    He charged the contractors to justify the resource for the projects by ensuring quality works and timely delivery.

     

  • IBBU VC visits monarch

    The management of the Ibrahim Badamosi University (IBBU), Lapai in Niger State has visited the Etsu Lapai, Alhaji Umaru Bago III to enhance harmonious relationship between the institution and its host community.

    Speaking during the visit, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ibrahim Kolo, praised the Lapai Emirate for promoting a peaceful atmosphere for the university to thrive.

    Prof Kolo informed the Etsu Lapai of important developments in the university, including its membership of the Association of African Universities, the take-off of the Institute of Maritime Studies next month, and plans by the Niger State government to establish a Medical School on the university’s main campus.

    He sought greater collaborations with the emirate, especially regarding the release of land for the medical school and other infrastructure.

    Responding, Alhaji Bago assured him that the emirate will make effort to sustain its cordial relationship with the university.

    He commended the IBB authorities for taking bold steps to take the university to greater heights and urged them not to rest on their oars.

    Students honour VC

    The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Ibrahim Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State, Prof Ibrahim Adamu Kolo, has been honoured with an award of excellence by the members of Students Counselling Association of Nigeria (SCASSON) for his contributions to the development of the association.

    Presenting the award to the VC, the National President of the association, Bako Ayuba, said Prof Kolo was recognised with the award for being an “icon of hope” and pioneer grand patron for the association.

    He also expressed appreciation to the VC for his “unwavering support” to the association, pledging to work vigorously in order to lift the association to a new height.

    Appreciating the students, Prof Kolo expressed said he was elated with the honour, promising to do more for the association to an enviable level.

    He added that he was convinced that the gesture was a product and manifestation of concerted efforts made by the founding members of the association to nurture character molders for the development of society, admonishing the executive members of SCASSON to imbibe the professional ethics of service to humanity.

    The VC assured the association of his full support towards the successful hosting of its first international conference slated to hold in Owerri, Imo State.

    ‘IBBU medical college underway’

    In its drive to ensure immediate take-off medical college of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State government has constituted a technical committee to ensure smooth delivery of the college.

    Inaugurating the committee in the conference room of the state Ministry of Tertiary Education, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr Muhammad Bashar Nuhu, said the lacuna created as a result of short supply of medical professionals in the state with increasing population had informed the government’s decision on the establishment of a medical school in the state-owned institution.

    He disclosed that the committee’s term of reference included a strategic plan towards the realisation of the minimum standard required for establishing the school, identifying areas where the university could leverage in terms of minimum standards, and recommending the cost implication.

    The Commissioner expressed optimism that the committee would deliver on the assignment, assuring that the ministry was ready to give it all the necessary support and co-operation to the members for success within four weeks the committee has to submit its report.

    The committee is headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Dr Muhammad Yakubu Auna. Other members are Dr Hassan Jimada, Dr Abdullahi Usman Imam, Dr Muhammad Makusidi and Mrs Jonanna Dufin Pada. The Director of Academics in the Ministry, Alhaji Muhammad Kudu, is to serve as the secretary.

    Responding on behalf of the chairman, Dr Auna promised to justify the confidence reposed in the committee and expressed appreciation for the opportunity provided to the members to serve.

    Maritime institute for September

    Academic activities are expected to take off at the Institute of Maritime Studies, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, (IBBU), Lapai in September.

    Chairman, Curriculum Development Committee of the Institute, Prof Dalhatu Umaru Sangari said necessary arrangements that will ensure a smooth start have been concluded.

    He said relevant faculty, support staff, and required learning and infrastructure that would help the take off of the institute as scheduled would be sourced internally.

    He said the curricula of the programmes have been developed to explore new areas of study in Postgraduate Diploma and undergraduate programmes in Maritime Studies.

    The postgraduate programme will run full-time for 16 months and part-time for 24 months; while the the undergraduate programmes, approved by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), would focus on Maritime Economics and Finance as well as Radio and Maritime Telecommunications and Technology.

    The Chairman expressed optimism about the socio-economic benefits impact the Institute would have on Niger State, including influencing the revitalization of the Baro Trade Outpost and all Inland Water ways to resume full commercial activities.

    Maiden inaugural lecture holds at IBBU

    An epidemiological study has revealed that food items of either plant or animal origin consumed by human beings are considered to be continually contaminated by high levels of toxins produced by fungi, which are also seen as carcinogenic.

    A professor of Biochemistry at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Prof Timothy Gbodi, made the revelation while delivering the maiden inaugural lecture of the institution. The lecture was titled Mycotoxins: Are they the silent killer?

    Gbodi called for multi-sectorial mitigation strategies that would be supported by relevant public and private institutions and professionals in the field of plant and animal agriculture and to be coordinated by a single entity with the view to remove contaminants from food.

    He urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ensure that standards were stuck to on imported foods and those for local consumption. He challenged all tiers of governments to look critically into technology research in Nigeria to make the country safer for the rich and poor.

    Prof Gbodi appreciated God for sparing his life and for making him the first lecturer to deliver the institution’s maiden inaugural lecture. He said he never thought he could stumble into academics, but added he later realised that God had a plan for those who trusted in him.

    The Visitor and the special guest of honour, Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr Nuhu Bashir, commended the management of the institution for successfully hosting the lecture.

    He said the government was doing its best to ensure of realisation the vision 3:20:20 of the Aliyu administration. Bashir disclosed that concerted efforts were being made by the government to establish Faculty of Medical Sciences to boost the production of health professionals and improve health care delivery in the state.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Kolo, in his remarks decried the attitude of some development agencies and manufacturing industries for not utilising research findings by scholars to fast-track the country’s development. He said in an effort to fulfill its mandates, IBBU staff and students had been encouraged to pursue researches in critical areas that were of immediate benefits to the state and the country.
