Drama as Ibibios oppose creation of Obolo State

The Ibibios have opposed the demand for the creation of an Obolo State from Akwa Ibom state, saying they will not concede any part of their land occupied by the Obolo people.

This was the position of the Ifim Ibom Ibibio, the highest traditional leadership institution in Akwa Ibom, during the public hearing on the review of the 1999 constitution.

The public hearing on the amendment of the 1999 Constitution for the South south zone was declared open on Friday at Ikot Ekpene by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The memorandum was presented by Dr. Samuel Udonsak, the President-General of Ekid People’s Union on behalf of the Ifim Ibom Ibibio. The Ibibios are the largest ethnic group in the state.

Udonsak stated that whereas the Ibibios are not opposed to the creation of new states  in the country, the Obolo people in Ibeno and Eastern Obolo who are ‘squatters’ on Ibibio lands do not have any right to carve out any portion to create a state of their own.

He said: “In the current constitutional amendment process/exercise, Ifim Ibom Ibibio notes that Nigerian people have made requests to the National Assembly for the creation of 31 additional (new) States across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

“As shown in the public hearing invitation document recently published by the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution, we know and note in particular that there is a request for the creation of Obolo State from the present Akwa Ibom State and Rivers State of South-South Nigeria.

“The Obolo people in Akwa Ibom State seeking a separate State of their own, currently live in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area (LGA), one of the 31 LGAs in the State, together with the Ibibio people (in 16 LGAs), the Annang people (in 8 LGAs), the Oro people (in 5 LGAs), and the Ibeno people (in one LGA).

“As earlier precisely indicated in Subsection 1.1 above, Ifim Ibom Ibibio recognizes and respects the right of the Obolo people currently living in Eastern Obolo LGA of Akwa Ibom State, to seek a geopolitical entity (a State) of their own.

“Ifim Ibom Ibibio, however, firmly holds the position that no part, no inch of Ibibio land, in any of the16 Ibibio LGAs shall be excised or carved out to create Obolo State, or any other State for that matter, which is not formally, legitimately and collectively demanded by Ibibio people, the owners of the ancestral lands they occupy”.

He stated further: “For the clarity of the matter, it should be noted that the following 16 of the 31 LGAs of Akwa Ibom State, as listed in the FIRST SCHEDULE (SECTION 3) PART 1 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, are Ibibio LGAs: Eket, Esit Eket, Etinan, Ibesikpo Asutan, Ibiono Ibom, Ikono, Ikot Abasi, Ini, Itu, MkpatEnin, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ibom, Nsit Ubium, Onna, Uruan and Uyo.

“The ancestral/authentic boundaries of these LGAs are clearly demarcated and delineated in the APPROVED, OFFICIAL, AND GAZETTED (APRIL 27, 2023) MAP OF AKWA IBOM STATE.

“In sum, the position of Ifim Ibom Ibibio and all Ibibio people at large, home and in the diaspora, is that no village, no section, no part, no inch of any of these Ibibio LGAs shall be made part of the proposed Obolo State, or any other State.

“As evident from established historical facts, all the parcels of land currently occupied by the Obolo people in the Eastern Obolo LGA of Akwa Ibom State were leased to their forebears by the Ibibio people on a royalty-paying basis.

“As a people, the Ibibio have been living in harmony with their kith and kin from the Annang, Oro, Ibeno, and Obolo ethnic extractions in Akwa Ibom State.

“Ifim Ibom Ibibio and Ibibio people at large, have no problem with the request of their Obolo brothers and sisters for the creation of Obolo State for their separate identity.

“However, the Ibibio are totally opposed to the annexture of any part, any inch of Ibibio land to the proposed Obolo State. This is our firm conclusion and position on the matter”, Udonsak stated in the memorandum.

However, the Obolo people in their presentation at the public hearing insisted on a state of their own saying they have been marginalised in the present Akwa Ibom State.

  • Ekid people seek federal appointments for Ibibio

Ekid people seek federal appointments for Ibibio

The people of Eket and Esit local governments of Akwa Ibom State have asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give Ibibio people federal appointments.

Under the aegis of Ekid Peoples Union (EPU), they appealed to President Tinubu to apply the federal character principle in selecting federal appointees from the states into its MDAs.

The call was made over the weekend by the National President of EPU, Dr. Samuel Udonsak, during the 2023 Annual National Congress of Ekid Nation.

In his address to Ekid people, Dr Udonsak drew the attention of the Federal Government to a glaring disparity in the appointment of the Ibibio by the Tinubu administration.

“It is necessary and timely to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the fact that so far, in Akwa Ibom State, the Ibibio in general, including Ekid in particular, with a population of about five million and 65 per cent of Akwa Ibom’s voting strength have not been carried along in its appointment,” he said.

Udonsak added that the non-appointment of any Ibibio by the current administration in its federal appointments, negates the principle of federal character.

He urged the National Government to mitigate the suffering of the people as a result of the harsh economic environment.

“Government policies should be tailored towards alleviating the suffering of the masses partly caused by the removal of fuel subsidy and forex uncertainties,” he said.

He called on the Federal Government to complete section four of the East West Road and the execution of the Lagos-Calabar Rail Line crisscrossing the Niger Delta, for ease of transportation of goods and economic development.

    Elders greet new Ibibio leader

Elders and leaders of Ibibio cultural organisations have supported the amended Akwa Ibom traditional law conferring president general of Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers of Akwa Ibom for life on  Solomon Etuk.

The group, in a statement by Asikpo Essienibok, chairman, among others, hailed Governor Umo Eno for assenting the bill amending the Traditional Rulers Law, Cap.155, Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2022 and for inaugurating Etuk to the position.

The elders, who also hailed the Speaker, Udeme Ottong and House of Assembly for passing the amendment, said  the law would lead to development, peace, stability, national respect, and progress.

It said: “We wish to note that other states have similar traditional structures that have served them well”.

The bill was presented, deliberated and referred to the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for scrutiny and passed into Law by the Assembly.

Since the accent, some sections of the state have criticised the law alleging it was a ploy by the majority Ibibio to perpetually dominate them.

  • Ibibio nation fetes Gov Emmanuel

Uyo, the capital of Akwa-Ibom State, is in festive mood as the sons and daughters of the Ibibio nation prepare to roll out the drums in celebration of one of their own on Monday.  The governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, who by virtue of his exalted office, ranks as the first citizen of Ibibioland, will be feted at a grand reception scheduled to hold at the ancestral Asang Ibibio Grounds, Ikot Oku Ikono, Uyo.

The event, which is being championed by former military governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga, and other Ibibio topshots, is a sign of popular endorsement of the governor who has been putting smiles on the faces of Akwa-Ibomites with people-oriented policies since he mounted the saddle.

  • We’re not part of Biafra, say Ibibio

We’re not part of Biafra, say Ibibio

The Ibibio of Akwa Ibom State say they remain committed to “the sanctity of Nigeria as one and indivisible” irrespective of the challenges currently facing the country.

The Ibibio People’s Union (IPU) in a statement by Ikpafak Edet Udofia, Global President and Ikpafak Aniekan Udoh, Global Secretary, reacting to their purported inclusion in the proposed Biafra, said yesterday that they “still are well versed with self-governance and do not need others to think or speak” for them.

The union, in a statement, said they are “well aware of a key reason why the first Biafra project failed and will not agree to be taken for a ride again. We posit that irrational exuberance led to the declaration of the first Biafra BEFORE ALL the ethnic groups in Eastern Nigeria were properly consulted for their input. The same mistake is being repeated demonstrating that no lessons were learned from the first fiasco.”

It said having have looked around the world it came to the realization of “the need for at least one strong country for black people. Since there is strength in size, the Union believes in a united well-governed Nigeria. Nigeria has the people and resources it only needs good and responsible leaders and the will to be that country. Therefore, we encourage all Nigerians to join hands to work to improve the country.”

The union therefore “categorically and very strongly repudiates the effrontery of those who would draw a map of their dream Biafra and include Ibibio land without prior consultation.”

It said while the Ibibio are not against any ethnic nationality within Nigeria deciding its destiny, they are not and will “never be part of Biafra.”

It  sympathized with the plight of the Igbo living in the north, and condemned any act of intimidation, violence against any ethnic group, it  declared that the Ibibio are part of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria, and that ” should Nigeria disintegrate, Ibibio people, are capable of forming their own country by themselves. There are many countries in the world today whose population is less than the current population of Ibibio.”

  • Ibibio leaders condemn desecration of ancestral stool

Traditional rulers, political and opinions leaders of the Ibibio land have condemned in strong terms perceived attempts to denigrade the ancestral stool of the land through the adoption of unknown titles as traditional rulers in Ibibio land.

The Ibibio leaders described the development as self-serving and capable of turning Ibibio land’s ancestral stool into a laughing stock in the country and beyond.

Rising from a meeting held at Asan Ibibio, Ikot Oku Ikono Uyo Local government area, the leaders affirmed that Mboho Afid Ibibio remains the apex traditional stool in Ibibio land  as ‘Ifim Ibom Ibibio’ has produced Oku Ibom Ibibio 1, 11 and 111.

The decision of the community leaders may not be unconnected with moves by some paramount rulers in Ibibio land  to introduce names auch as ‘Ifim Ikpaisong Ibibio’, Oku Ikpaisong Ibibio’  which they said is at variance with the already established traditional nomenclature.

The meeting that was sequel to the one held on 25th October, 2016 at the palace of the paramount ruler of Etinan Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty, Edidem Ime Dickson Umoette, was attended by other paramount rulers, clan heads and village heads in Ibibio land, leaders of thought, leaders of political and socio-cultural groups and organizations in Ibibio land, including Akwa Esop Imasong Ibibio, Ibibio Elders Forum, Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, Ibibio National Union, Ibibio Academic Roundtable, Odudu Ibibio, Uyo Senatorial District Leaders Forum, Ibibio South Senatorial Forum, Youths and Women groups, among others.

According to the leaders, to address the stool in any other name whatsoever is not in the collective interest of Ibibio people as such act will negate the legendary ancestral and historical milestone of Ibibio nation.

Consequently, stating that the future of Ibibio nation supercedes individual ambitions, the forum resolved that it was time to intervene and save the stool from being polarised and rendered ineffective .

Accordingly, the communique signed by the paramount ruler of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area (LGA), HRM Edidem Ntuk Obom, paramount ruler of Mkpat Enin Iga LGA, HRM Edidem Elder A Ekpene, Ntisong Ibibio 111, HRH Obong Essien Ekidem as well as as the International President of the Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, Akparawa Monday Etokakpan and 57 others, noted that it is unusual and an abomination for the name of a traditional stool to be changed from time to time.

“Rather, we should emulate what obtains in other traditional stools such as Oba of Benin, Ooni of Ife, Emir of Kano, Sultan of Sokoto, Obong of Calabar, Itai Afe Annang, Ata of Oron among others, therefore, Ifim Ibom Ibibio, the revered traditional stool of the Ibibio people should not be an exception.

“We have noted a seeming sense of confusion or apparent lack of direction among section of our revered Ibibio traditional rulers in their quest to create a new traditional identity for themselves through the adoption at various times, of names such as Mboho Esien Ibibio paramount rulers, Mboho paramount rulers, Esien Ibibio, Uyo Ikpaisong Ibibio and lately, Ifim Ikpaisong Ibibio,” the leaders noted.

The community leaders noted with regrets the alleged registration of ‘Uyo Ikpaisong Ibibio ‘ or any other such Non-governmental organization (NGO) with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to function as the traditional stool for the Ibibio people, saying  is an aberration and totally unacceptable to Ibibio people.

They said such act is divisive and not in the collective interest of Ibibio people because traditional stools are neither registered trustees nor commercial concerns, therefore, “All established traditional stools are products of ancestral evolution that derive legitimacy and supremacy from the customary laws and traditional values of its people.

“Furthermore, we implore all paramount rulers, clan heads, village heads, leaders of socio-cultural and political groups and indeed all the Ibibio people should close ranks, support and respect Ifim Ibom Ibibio as the apex traditional stool in Ibibio land.

“However, in the event of organising any ceremony involving the entire Ibibio people, the name Mboho Afid Ibibio be used as the umbrella name for that purpose,” the leaders added.

  • Akwa Ibom: Ibibio elders back Emmanuel for governor

Akwa Ibom: Ibibio elders back Emmanuel for governor

A group, the Ibibio Elders’ Fo-rum, has endorsed the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government (SSG), Mr. Udom Emmanuel, for next year’s governorship election.

The forum said the aspirant will defend the  growth, unity and development of the state.

The forum is made up of elders from Ibibioland. It explained that Emmanuel is a humble and committed administrator.

When some of the elders visited the SSG in his office at Uyo, the state capital, they urged him to declare his intention to run for the office.

They said Emmanuel has lived up to expectation as a technocrat before he was appointed as the SSG.

Hailing his patriotism, they said: “those who got jobs through Emmanuel’s assistance have established themselves to the envy of their contemporaries in other states.”

Noting that Emmanuel is the only Ibibio son on the board of African Finance Corporation and the highest ranking Akwa Ibom son in the financial sector, they wondered “why Akwa Ibom should go to war with a mere recruit when they have a ‘General”

Former Minister of Lands and Housing Chief Nduese Essien said the SSG will be a worthy successor to Governor Godswill Akpabio.   He said: “It is on this basis that the entire Ibibio elders of Akwa Ibom State have realized that we need someone like Udom Emmanuel as Governor, come 2015, because he is the right choice and truly deserves the seat.”

The Chairman of the Forum, Dr Okon Uko, decried the  falsehood,  propaganda, blackmail and the “pull him down syndrome” that have characterised politics in Ibibioland.

Uko extolled the sterling qualities of the SSG, saying that he will be a good governor.

  • Knocks for Ibibio Elders’ chair

The Chairman of the Ibibio Elders Forum, Dr. Okon Akpan Uko, was slammed yesterday for his remarks that the forum had not endorsed the Akwa Ibom State Secretary to the Government (SSG), Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

A member of the forum, Obong Thomas Akpan, chided him for his double-speak.

Akpan said Uko made profound statements about the character and personality of Mr. Udom Emmanuel and hailed his intellectual prowess, managerial ingenuity and humane disposition, which he noted set him apart as a credible and competent successor to Governor Godswill Akpabio.

Uko, in a telephone interview with The Nation, said the forum was yet to endorse Udom, claiming it only received him out of courtesy and urged him to continue his consultations peacefully.

Akpan wondered why the forum would deny the recorded material facts of the endorsement of Udom.

His words: “We are at a loss how Uko or the leadership of the forum could deny the (recorded) material facts of the endorsement, which they presented initially in a well-composed tribute by the forum. The tribute was printed, circulated and presented by the Ibibio Elders Forum spokesman, Obong Tony Akpan.

“We view this development as regrettable and embarrassing not only to the forum and the public, but also to the leaders and political figures across the state, who accompanied the SSG during the visit on July 25. We condemn this double-speak in its entirety.

“We recall that at this event, Uko made profound statements about the character and personality of Udom and commended his intellectual prowess, managerial ingenuity and humane disposition, which he noted set him apart as a credible and competent successor to Governor Akpabio next year.”

  • Why Ibibio should support Oron for governor

Why Ibibio should support Oron for governor

Michael Onofiok, a maritime expert, is one of the governorship aspirants in Akwa Ibom State. He spoke with Kazeem Ibrahym.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned the governorship ticket to Eket Senatorial District. As a governorship aspirant from Oron, are you satisfied with such arrangement?

I am partly satisfied with the arrangement. At the initial stage, there were insinuations making rounds in the state that there was not going to be any kind of zoning at all. That was against the original arrangement of tripod. The power sharing formula between the major ethnic groups in the state, that is the Ibibios, Annangs and Orons.

The Ibibios have had the first share in the formula. They have been there from the time of late Obong Akpan Isemin to Obong Victor Attah’s period. They spent almost 12 years in the Government House. The Annangs are there now represented by Chief Godswill Akpabio whose second tenure is running up by 2015. 2015 is supposed to be the Oron’s turn, which is the third leg of the tripod but from nowhere we started hearing politics of Senatorial District and no more an ethnicity. We were very uncomfortable with that. We had to battle that with the party and the governor himself. So I am glad that at least the party has made that first pronouncement that the governorship has now been zoned to Eket Senatorial District. We still expect them to say more. The party and the governor still have to say more. That apart from the power shifting to Eket Senatorial District, it has to be Oron Nation. That was exactly what Ex-Governor Victor Attah did. He made that pronouncement that power was going to shift from Uyo to Ikot Ekpene with particular reference to Annang speaking group because he knows that there are still Ibibio of Ini and Ikono of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District. So we expect the party to go further in their pronouncement and declare that Oron has the right to produce the next governor after the expiration of the tenure of Governor Godswill Akpabio.

What is the way forward for Oron now that emphasis is placed on politics of senatorial district instead of tripod arrangement?

It will be a disservice to the people if the government now feels it should abandon the tripod agreement that has given us relative peace in the state. I am just a governorship aspirant, I wasn’t there when our forebears drew the agreement on the tripod arrangement. People like Dr. Etim Uye, former Ambassador was part of the meeting. Someone like Chief Don Etiebet was also in the meeting. Former Governor Attah is much aware of this arrangement and even the late Obong Akpan Isemin, a former governor from Ibibio stock was privy to this arrangement. If there is any derailment from that arrangement then that will be of disservice to the people. I will be grateful to see the Ibibios mobilising support for Oron and declaring that Oron had the right to produce the next governor for Akwa Ibom State. With that, the Ibibios would have for once reciprocated the gesture often done to them by the Oron people since senatorial districts were created as purely administrative areas.

Are you comfortable with the aspiration of some Uyo politicians that have also indicated interest in the 2015 governorship?

I am not comfortable with that because Uyo Senatorial District has ruled the state for almost 12 years from late Obong Akpan Isemin’s time to the end of Governor Victor Attah. I have heard series of messages going round the state and I have also read from some Ibibio people saying that Governor Akpabio should make pronouncement that he will be handing over to an Oron person that if the Governor is bold enough to do this, then the Ibibio race will withdraw from the contest and also look for who to support from Oron. But what I am not comfortable with is the Ibibio also indicating interest to run for the same governorship and giving the governor a condition as well. If you give a governor a condition that until he makes further pronouncement that governorship is going to Oron and not Eket senatorial district, then I think we can go and have peace but not also contesting inside the election and also giving the same condition. So, I expect the Ibibio to lay down their ambition and also give support to the Oron people. Apart from waiting for the governor’s pronouncement, the Ibibio should also pronounce that Oron is the third leg of the tripod and Oron is due for the governorship. Oron has supported an Ibibio man for office of the governorship. Oron has supported an Annang man to the office of the governor ; so, I think it is expedient to also give an Oron man an opportunity to be governor. Then the governor will be helpless and he will see the reason to also shift his support to Oron. But when the Ibibio are looking for governorship and compelling the governor to make that pronouncement, it is not right. If the Ibibio accept to do that it is a war 90 per cent won because what that means is that we have now won the support of Uyo Senatorial District and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district cannot have a problem with this arrangement. They are 100 per cent in support of Oron emerging the next governor after Governor Godswill Akpabio. So, if they go on to make this pronouncement, then other people will be weakened and they will see no other reason than to support an Oron person.

What kind of PDP primaries do you expect in Akwa Ibom State going by the claim of some people that the governor is trying to impose his SSG on the people?

There will be no primaries on the basis of imposition of aspirant. When you impose a candidate on the people, especially at this time where the government is supposed to be doing stock taking and try as much as possible to re-align itself to the wishes of the people. When you impose a candidate on the people, they will see it as a challenge. That is not expected of a leader which I am sure that is not what our dear governor is out to do. He may have one to three people that he could wish to give his support. He has to present this man to the people of Akwa Ibom State. All we have been hearing is rumours that Governor Akpabio is in support of Emmanuel Udom. If the reason for sacking former SSG Umana Umana was that he already campaigning while in office for the governorship, then what is Udom doing now? Udom is also campaigning. His flyers and posters are everywhere in the state. He is also holding meetings everywhere much more than what former SSG Umana did. I am very sure why Umana was removed from office may have been on something that transcends what we know. The question of imposition to me is still a mirage because that is not realistic at all. If you are talking about going into a primaries with a candidate that has already been imposed on the people, the people have the right to reject such candidate and we want proper things to be done.

As we move towards the PDP primaries, what role do you expect of Governor Godswill Akpabio?

The governor should play a fatherly role because he is disengaging from the government. I think the only legacy he holds the people is giving us that memory of him that we would sit down here and say we have missed our dear governor that if he were around he would have done this and that for us. We want to him to disengage with respect and go home with total respect from the people of Akwa Ibom State. He should play a fatherly role and give us a level playing field. The governorship should be zoned to the area that is due for it and that is Oron. No matter how many people that indicate interest in that area to run for the governorship if none is willing to step down for the others let them go to the field. Be fair and be impeccable in your decision and let us see what comes out of this but all we want is for him to give us long lasting legacy.

Oron seeks Akwa Ibom’s top job

    Uyoatta Eshiet

The Oron Nation comprises five local government areas in Akwa Ibom State. The Oro Nation is appealing to other ethnic groups in the state to support it in its bid to produce the next governor of the state. During The people spoke at the first Oron Nation’s Thanksgiving Day and lecture in Lagos.

The event took place at the Oron House located on Hamidu Williams Street, Okota, Isolo, Lagos mainland. The first part was an interdenominational thanksgiving service. The second part was a soul-searching lecture on why Oron Nation has remained backward despite its huge contributions to Akwa Ibom State and the national economy through her oil and gas resources.

The lecture titled: “The Politics of Land and Sea in Nigeria; Redefining Political and Economic Engagement in Oron Nation”, was delivered by Rev Fr. Donatus Pius Ukpong of the Department of Religious and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Ministering at the thanksgiving part of the event was: Archbishop, Catholic Archdiocese of Calabar, Most Rev. Joseph Ekuwem, Vice Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Akwa Ibom State, Ven. Antai and Rev Fr. Ukpong.

In the Homily by Bishop Ekuwem titled: “Oro, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”, he quoted from the book of Psalms 137, Romans 9: 1-5 and Luke 17. He emphasized the need for thanksgiving as a means of appreciating God for His goodness and getting Him to do more.

He told the Oron people that though God has the power to do anything, He would not do everything because He has given man the intellect and every other thing needed to use to excel.

He said: “With a friend in Jesus, one can achieve the unachievable, urging them to team up within themselves and with others to achieve their desires. After 89 years, the Oron Nation has come of age; God has blessed them with intellect, they must stand up for what they want as no one will give them their due if they don’t demand for it”, the cleric said.

He urged the Lagos branch of the union to ensure the larger Oron Nation imbibes the spirit of giving thanks to God.

Ven. Antai said though the thanksgiving was belated, it was better late than never. He said it was thanksgiving that caused Jesus to make whole one leper out of 10 who were cleansed because she returned to give thanks.

Rev Fr. Ukpong, in his paper, faulted the “political anger” in the Akwa Ibom project as satirised by Governor Godswill Akpabio. He says it lacks natural justice and frustrates the divine blessedness of some people in the state.

Rev. Ukpong insisted that the starting point of a true Akwa Ibom Project is the elimination of the structures of sin, correction of perennial injustice and the up-turning of economic and political structures that are not rooted in justice. These structures are responsible for poverty in the midst of wealth and enslavement of kings and queens in their palaces, he said.

The real and true Akwa Ibom Project should be driven by real anger for equity and justice, without which there can be no real development and economic transformation, he added.

He said: “The real argument in Nigeria today should be resource contribution to the sharing pool not just on land mass or population as some would want us to believe either in Akwa Ibom or Nigeria. The Oro Nation has contributed the largest share to the sharing pool in Akwa Ibom State to produce the next Governor of the state in the interest of justice and equity.”

As the Nation moves towards another election period, Rev. Ukpong warned political gladiators to bear in mind that democracy has its standard and core values, which are not optional in any country. He listed some of them to include respect for human life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, the common good, justice, equity, respect for diversity and truth.

The paper recommended that Oro sons and daughters should train and equip themselves for serious political engagement in Nigeria to give them a voice in the politics of land and seas in the country.

The people were urged to embrace politics of equity and inclusiveness in 2015 and beyond. The paper presenter urged the Oron people to endeavor to establish urgently what he called “Oro Business Consortium” with seed money from the five local governments in the Oro nation and strive to revamp the Ebughu Fishing Company for the use of the Oro people.

On the abandoned Ibaka Deep Seaport, Rev Fr Ukpong challenged all Oro sons and daughters to pursue it relentlessly, politically and otherwise. “The project is perennially ignored because there is no Oro person at the helm of affairs in the state as a governor,” he said.

He urged them to take advantage of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron and train themselves on sea-related businesses.

The people were challenged to give necessary support to political appointees of Oron extraction either at the state or federal level. Since the future of any person is education dependent, Ukpong said individuals and groups should engage themselves extensively in educational advancement.

The lead discussant and former Managing Director, Niger Dock, Nkpubre Nkpubre, demanded justice from Akwa Ibom State government on the issue of 13 per cent oil money derivation.

“75 percent of the oil derived from Akwa Ibom State is from the five local government areas of the Oro Nation. Equity demands that the state government should give a reasonable percent of the derivation received to the oil bearing local government areas instead of what is obtained today,” Nkpubre said.
