    Lagos celebrates as Sanwo-Olu’s wife, others get African iconic women recognition

    Lagos First Lady Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu is set to be conferred with the coveted honour of African Iconic First Lady Of The Year at the African Iconic Women awards (AIWRA) 2024.

    This is in recognition of her roles in advancing the growth and development of women and children in her state Lagos and environs.

    Her emergence came through online electioneering exercise that made her the popular choice among the voting masses.

    She is loved among women in the state for several empowerment programmes she has carried out in order to touch the lives of the people.

    A mother and an embodiment of kind heart, she never hides her love for children, especially those from less privileged backgrounds.

    The AIWRA is organised by Face of Democracy Nigeria (FDN) and is also designed to recognise outstanding women for their contributions in peace building and national development.

    Addressing newsmen shortly after the release of the preliminary list of awardees in Abuja recently, the Project Director of FDN, Alexander Ajagbonna, better known as Fajag, expressed satisfaction with the profile of award nominees.

    Other awardees include Denis Nyakeru Tshisekedi Congo First Lady, Fatima Bago, Uzoamaka Nwifuru, Fatima Tajudeen Abbas, Fatima Dikko Radda, Hurriyya Dauda Lawal, Gloria Diri, Natasha Akpoti, Hon. Boma Goodhead Bola Shagaya, Aisha Dahiru Binani.

    The winners will be decorated on May 23 at Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja.

  • Lagos State Governor’s wife to fight sexual, domestic violence

    Lagos State Governor’s wife, Mrs Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu has said she has an onerous task of curbing domestic and sexual violence menace in the state.

    She said the First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari has directed her to confront sexual and domestic violence frontally in the state.

    “I have the directive of the First Lady of Nigeria to work towards the curbing the menace of domestic and sexual violence in the state,” she said.

    Mrs. Sanwo-Olu disclosed this when members of the Joint Legal Clinic of the Ministry of Justice visited her at the Lagos House, Ikeja.

    The team included the Directorate of Administration-General and Public Trustee; Citizen’s Mediation Centre; Community Service Sentencing; Directorate for Citizens Rights; Office of the Public Defender; Public Advice Centre and Coordinator of Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team.

    She pledged to support them to preserve and protect the rights of citizens of the state, assuring that her office will intensify efforts at protecting the rights of victims of domestic and sexual violence.

    Mrs Sanwo-Olu urged the Joint Legal Clinic Team to improve on its public enlightenment and sensitisation campaign of the agencies charged with the responsibility of protecting the rights of the citizens of the state.

    While acknowledging the First Lady’s passion for Justice especially for children, Director, Public Advice Centre (PAC), Mrs. Omololu Adesina, who spoke on behalf of the team, said the visit was aimed at seeking partnership with the office of the First Lady in protecting citizens rights.

    “We have seen your passion and drive for a better health care for the children of the state. We are here to seek the partnership of your office with the Ministry of Justice in reducing the rising cases of social vices and anti-social behavior, particularly among the youth in Lagos State,” she said.

    She assured the first lady that the team will double its efforts in sensitising the public on their Rights and create better awareness on the directorates within the Ministry of Justice to consult for support which they can access for free.

  • We’ll not let Nigerians down, says Speaker

    HOUSE of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila on Monday assured Lagosians and Nigerians that the House will not let them down in the discharge of its duties.

    Gbajabiamila spoke at a thanksgiving service organised by the House of Representatives member from Kosofe Constituency, Prince Rotimi Agunsoye, at the Victory Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Magodo.

    The service officiated by Pastors Toyin Olamilekan and Charles Kpandei was witnessed by the Lagos State governor’s wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor’s wife Oluremi, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, House of Representatives members Jimi Benson, Ademorin Kuye and Dr. Samuel Adejare, Chief Tunde Temionu, Lagos white cap chiefs and other All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains.

    Thanking God for Agunsoye’s re-election, Gbajabiamila described him as a rock that had been consistent in his support for his aspiration.

    He reflected on the battle for the number four citizen, thanking Lagosians for standing by him since 2015 when he nursed the ambition.

    The Speaker, who thanked Lagosians, especially Surulere Constituency, for electing him for the fifth time, promised to always live up to expectation.

    Agunsoye said he had made it a tradition to come before God for thanksgiving after achieving any political leap.

    Accompanied by his wife, Yinka, the former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs said he would not compromise his position as a public officer.

    Agunsoye stressed: “I declare again that, today, June 23, 2019, I will never in any way compromise my service to God. I will not miss anything with serving God. If I do that, He should not answer my prayers.

    “I will not compromise my position in moving this nation forward.”

    Agunsoye noted that he had requested the pastors to pray for the nation and those that would emerge after the primaries and general elections.

    He added: “I said if Abuja will not be possible, God, don’t let them take Lagos from us. I thank God. Governor Sanwo-Olu has always come to this church to thank God for me when I became Special Adviser on Urban and Physical Planning, Commissioner and when I first won election into the House of Representatives.”

     

  • Sanwo-Olu’s wife hails religious leaders for ensuring peace in Lagos 

    Lagos State Governor Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu has hailed religious leaders for their efforts and contributions towards enduring peace in the state.

    She urged them to continue along that line and even do more to make the state a peaceful abode for everyone.

    Mrs. Sanwo-Olu thanked them for their support that ensured victory for her husband in the last elections, saying they should keep on with the support.

    She gave the commendation on Thursday in her welcome address at the 2019 Eid-el-Fitri celebrations to mark the end of Ramadan on the open field of Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

    Mrs. Sanwo-Olu said the lessons to learn from the Ramadan season include the virtues of sacrifice, self-denial, piety, love and generosity among others.

    She said: “Through the Ramadan, we are taught to seek spiritual advancement and closeness to God, by stepping away from our comfort zone, where we indulge in various acts that please us as human beings but which are not acceptable to God.”

    According to her, Ramadan teaches selflessness and love, requiring thinking less about one’s self and more about the welfare of less privileged people.

    “We are expected to give, help, put smiles on the faces of people and to be a source of blessing to many; in all, it teaches us to emulate the sterling qualities of the Holy Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W).

    “What is far more important, however, is to keep our new form by not returning to those old things and old ways”, adding that this is the greatest lesson of Ramadan and if they achieve this, then they have achieved the lesson of the season.

    In his keynote remarks, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said his government “is for all”. “Join us to work. Let’s us have a continuous collaborative engagement.

    “We shall continue to ask you to work with us so that we can deliver to Lagosians, help us in ensuring zero tolerance for potholes, indiscriminate disposal of refuse and driving,” the governor said.

    Part of the activities at the celebration were prayers for the first family, deputy governor and his family, the state, Qur’an recitation/quiz competition and presentation of gifts.

  • Group to Sanwo-Olu: resuscitate 37 non-functional PHCs in Lagos

    A group of doctors under the aegis of Medilag 90 has called on Lagos State Governor-Elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to resuscitate 37 nonfunctional Primary Health and Dental Care Centers in the state when he resumes office.

    Medilag 90 is made up of 1990 medical and dental graduates of the University of Lagos, College of Medicine.

    Wife of the governor-elect, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, was a member of the class.

    In a statement in Abuja, Spokesman of the group, Dr Dele Babade, expressed joy on the election of Sanwo-Olu.

    The statement reads: “It is a thing of joy for us and we are quite confident that Dr (Mrs) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu is professionally prepared and ready to play a major supportive role to her husband as the First Lady of the pre-eminent State in Nigeria.

    “First-hand knowledge of Dr (Mrs) Sanwo-Olu, makes them confident in assuring Lagosians of a compassionate and empathetic First Lady and urges them to give her and her husband their full cooperation.

    “We know he passionately believes in these goals. Of particular importance is the expansion of the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme to reach 500,000 households (2.5 million enrollments) by the Q4 of 2019.

    “He is also determined to meet the targeted Abuja Declaration on Healthcare spending of 15%of the State budget, raising it from its current level of 8.86%.”

    They urged the incoming administration to incorporate the outreach medical program into the State’s health care delivery system.

     

  • Sanwo-Olu offers free health screening to Ikorodu residents

    Hundreds of residents of Ikorodu area of Lagos on Monday received free health screening sponsored by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the health screening exercise include free medical consultation, free eye test, free drugs and hospital referral, among others.

    Wife of the APC governorship candidate and that of his running mate, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, respectively, who presided over the medical outreach programme, appealed to residents to vote en-masse for all APC candidates during the March 9 elections.

    Also speaking at the event, Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Sanai Agunbiade, appealed to Lagos residents to ensure victory for all APC candidates in the upcoming polls.

    Agunbiade urged the residents to vote in a correct manner to reduce the number of void votes during the election.

    Also speaking at the venue, the Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government, Mr Wasiu Adeshina, commended residents for coming out in their numbers to check their health status.

    Adeshina stressed the importance of health, reminding them that health is wealth and foundation of any meaningful socio-economic development in any society.

    According to the council boss, good health care system in a society gives rise to a formidable labour force which in turn lead to a viable economy.

    “It is wise for anybody above 40-years of age to engage in frequent medical checkup for the purpose of maintaining their health, prevention and treatment of disease.

    Mrs Sherifat Shokunbi, one of the beneficiaries, commended the council boss and the APC governorship candidate for the initiative.

    She urged them not to limit the benefit to only election period, but to make it a continuous exercise for more people to benefit. (NAN)

  • Sanwo-Olu’s wife encourages retired healthcare personnel to form group

    Wife of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has encouraged retirees in the healthcare profession to form groups for stronger partnership with the government to improve healthcare delivery.

    Mrs. Sanwo-Olu, who is a medical practitioner, noted that improved healthcare would be one of the major programmes her husband would implement if elected.

    She said: “We are encouraging retirees with decades of experience in healthcare management to form a group to enable the government tap from their wealth of experience.”

    She spoke while receiving various women support groups at the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Campaign Office in Ikoyi.

    Mrs. Sanwo-Olu, who was joined by the wife of her husband’s running mate, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, appreciated the women for engaging in door-to-door campaign on behalf of their husbands, while re-assuring them that the support would be reciprocated with good governance.

    She said: “Poverty at the grassroots is one of the things Sanwo-Olu is coming to tackle. The one that concerns women the most is the issue of healthcare.

    “While the healthcare delivery has improved, there are still challenges to be addressed.

    Mrs. Sanwo-Olu revealed her husband always became emotional for the “overwhelming support” he enjoyed from various groups across the divides, saying the support would not be taken for granted.

    Association of Female Entertainment Practitioners of Nigeria, led by Mrs. Wunmi Obe, said Sanwo-Olu’s zeal to address challenges facing the entertainment industry led to his endorsement by the group.

    Supervisors of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) said they were convinced Sanwo-Olu’s programmes were designed to tackle poverty at the grassroots.

    A WAPA supervisor, Mrs. Pat Tekoboh, said the group was ready to mobilise voters for the election of the APC candidate at the polls. She, however, urged Sanwo-Olu to appoint women in key areas if elected.

    Other groups that visited the campaign office included Retired Nurse Administrators Healthcare Initiative, Body of Female Councillors, Women Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), Lagos State Hospitals Management Board Senior Staff Cooperative Multipurpose Society Ltd (LASCOMED), Network Men and Women Group, Sanwo-Olu Babes in Surulere, and Body of Female Councillors.

  • Show your electoral strength, Sanwo-Olu’s wife urges women

    Wife of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, has advised women to show their strength in coming general elections. Doing so, she said, would help women get their deserved quota in governance.

    Mrs Sanwo-Olu made the call on Thursday at the campaign office of her husband in Ikoyi during a meeting with women groups led by Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) chairmen and the women arm of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Independent Campaign Group.

    She said it was high time women in the state organised themselves and united for greater political participation, adding that participation, rather than making demands, in politics and governance would make women to play central role in development.

    Mrs Sanwo-Olu said women would have proper representations in all arms of government both in appointive and elective positions when they show their strength in mobilizing their fellow women for political participation and government.

    She said: “The role of women in the development of any society cannot be underestimated. We have the numbers, the passion and the ideas to make our society great. Our aim is to make Lagos greater than we have now. What we need is to become more united and focused. This way, we will get more women in elective offices. I look forward to the day we would produce the first woman Speaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly and even the governor. It is possible. We can make this happen.

    As we move ahead in this campaign, I urge our women to carry our message to every ward and unit in Lagos. We must mobilize our women to come out and vote for APC, the party under which my husband and Dr Obafemi Hamzat contesting to take Lagos to greater height. I am assuring all women in Lagos that Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat are committed to work for better tomorrow for our children. They have the plans and they have the competence to deliver. Lagos women must come out and vote for APC.”

    The Coker Aguda LCDA chairman, Mrs Medinat Adetutu, who led the women groups, pointed out that Lagos women demonstrated their persuasive power during the recent Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection exercise in which they mobilized themselves across the state for the exercise.

    The women groups declared their support for the joint ticket of Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat, promising to mobilize their members for grassroots campaign.
