    Ibile Games boxing good for school athletes – Mensha

    Participationof young boxers in the ongoing Lagos   State Secondary Schools Sports Festival tagged ‘Ibile Games 2015’ has been described as a good development to discover talented pugilists in their prime ages.

    Former national boxing coach Joe Mensah, who is also the Technical Director of the Lagos State Boxing Association, said that as a veteran coach in boxing, he was glad seeing boxing taking place in a sports fiesta specifically designed for secondary schools in Lagos, adding that this would give the students early exposure to the rudiments of the sport.

    The boxing events of the on-going championship began on Monday and it will end on Thursday. Mensah, the trainer of Segun Ajose, Commonwealth Super Lightweight boxing champion, said that bringing boxing into a secondary school-based competition is not only good for the development of the game at the grassroots, but would also give the school athletes the opportunity to develop themselves in the game early in life.

    “This is a good development for boxing in Lagos State. Having young boxers from secondary schools taking part in boxing gives us the confidence that they will get a level of education and at the same time do well in boxing,” said Mensah who has been the Camp Commandant of Adopt-A-Talent Sports Programme of the Lagos State Government.

    Meanwhile, Promasidor Nigeria, makers of Cowbell Milk in association with BME Concern and Ripples, has donated 1,000 hockey sticks and balls to 32 secondary schools participating in the on-going Ibile Games 2015 to sustain the game and to support schools to play hockey.

    Manager, Corporate Communications of Promasidor, Ebi Akpeti, said at the presentation that, “Our intention is to develop the game in Nigeria using Lagos as a pilot. We have ball and skin guides to support the players. The hockey sticks are the product of Daries Sports Company in England.”

    The Director of Sports, Lagos State Sports Council, Dr. Kweku Tandoh said that Lagos State Sports Council is proud to associate with Promasidor in its bid to development sports at the grassroots. He thanked the company for its Community Relations Service (CRS).

    He urged the students to make use of the kits in order to motivate the donor to do more for Lagos sports.

    The chairman of the hockey association in Lagos, Tunde Popoola, described the gesture of Promasidor as a contribution that will go a long way in aiding the development of the game at the grassroots.

    Meanwhile, action continues today in various events of the second week of the competition. While Fives started today, events such as Table Tennis, Deaf Table Tennis, Hockey, Swimming, Athletics (track and field, deaf athletics), Karate, Chess, Volleyball, Squash, Scrabble and Handball started on Monday.

  • Ibile Games 2015 enters week two

    The Lagos State Secondary Schools Sports Festival, tagged Ibile Games 2015, which started on 26 January, has entered its second week.

    While some sports had already been decided, finals of some events will be held this week, athletes will however start hostilities in some other sports today.

    Table Tennis events are expected to start today at the Molade Okoya Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, while taekwondo will hold at Knock up Hall of the National Stadium. Chess and Scrabble are other events scheduled for this week.

    Meanwhile, quarter finalists have emerged in Basketball for boys and girls. In the boys event, Birrel High School will face Whitesand Schools. Bishop Howell will take Topfield Schools, Muslim College will Ilupeju Senior Secondary School, while International School Lagos will slug it out with Ifako Grammar School in today’s matches.

    In the girls’ category,  Lagoon Schools will play C.M.S Girls, Logos Private Schools will battle Queens College.

    Wesley Girls School will slug it out with Aunty Ayo Memorial Grammar School, while International School Lagos will take on Phidel Private School.

    In Judo event already decided at the weekend, Herbert Macaulay Secondary School was adjudged the first best school in the junior boys event, while Lagos City College won the best school in the senior boys category.

    The best school in the junior girls was Wesley Junior Girls High School, while Wesley Senior Girls High School was adjudged  the best school in the senior girls category.

    In some of the judo results released by the technical subcommittee of the Main Organising Committee at the weekend,

    Goodluck Odogbo and Yomi Enikumehin, both of Ken Ade Secondary School won gold and silver medal respectively in the -66kg junior boys event, while Adebode Adewale of Mobolaji Bank Anthony Secondary School and Adeyanju Isiaka of Media College were joint bronze medal winners.

    Akinlabi Ahmed of Moblaji Bank Anthony Secondary School won gold medal in -34kg junior boys event, while Salau Iyanu of Herbert Macaulay Secondary School won silver medal.

    Iwuji Azubuike of Lagos City College and Ahmed Abdukamin of Blessing Impeccable College won gold and silver medal respectively in -38kg event. In -28kg junior girls category, Aosha Asedegiri of Wesley Girls Junior High School won gold medal, while Rebecca Afolabi of Media College won silver medal.

    Fausat Ajisegiri of Wesley Girls Junior High School picked the gold medal of -48kg event, while Baraka Salawu won silver medal.

    In the senior boys’ -60kg event, Iwuji Uche and Peter Jeremiah both of Lagos City College won gold and silver medals respectively. Also Lagos City College’s Apaba Ifabukunmi and Emmanuel Daniel won gold and silver medals of -46kg event. Ellion Peter of Lagos City College was the winner of gold medal in -55kg, while Damilola Henshaw of Wahab Folawiyo Secondary School won silver medal.

    In the senior girls -52kg, Bolanle Akeem of Herbert Macaulay Secondary School won gold medal, while Chidinma Azikpe of Wesley Girls Senior Secondary School won silver medal.

    In +63kg, Victorial Okorie of Herbert Macaulay Secondary School won gold medal, while Bukola Odunbola of Eletu Odibo Secondary School won silver medal.

    Lagos Island wins 2014 Ibile Games

    The absence of Yaba LCDA may have paved the way for Lagos Island Local Government to emerge as the new winners of Lagos State Sports Festival tagged IBILE Games 2014, which was concluded at the weekend at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

    Lagos Island topped the medals table of the Senior Category of the Games with 366 medals: 151 gold, 108 silver and 107 bronze medals.

    In second position are Team Surulere that won 109 medals: 36 gold, 32 silver and 41 bronze while Team Ibeju Lekki came third with 93 medals: 29 gold, 27 silver and 27 bronze medals.            Team Ojo came fourth with 78 medals comprising 25 gold, 29 silver and 24 bronze. In the fifth position are Team Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA) that won 63 medals: 24 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze.

    In the Junior category, which featured secondary school students in the state, schools with best performance in each of the 20 sports in this category were listed out by the Technical Sub-Committee headed by Babatunde Fatayi-Williams.

    Team Lagos City Senior College, Sabo, Yaba was outstanding in the boys’ category. They were the best school team in four sports – Wrestling, Handball, Badminton and Squash, while in the Girls’ category, Wesley Girls Junior Secondary School, Sabo, Yaba out- shined others in four sports: Weightlifting, Judo, Badminton and Squash.

    The football final, which was decided during the colourful final ceremony attended by Governor of Lagos State,  Babatunde Raji Fashola, Sir Molade Okoya Thomas and other important dignitaries, saw Ojo and Surulere Sports City Football Club playing a 1-1 draw in regulation time only for the Ojo team to win the football gold in the penalty shootout that ended 3-1.

    Director of Sports, Lagos Sports Council, Kweku Adebayo Tandoh said the Main Organising Committee (MOC) headed by the Commissioner for Sports, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, appreciated the support received from Governor Fashola, the Ministry of Education, corporate Nigeria, principals, Games Masters, technical officers, chairmen of all the participating local councils in the state and the spectators for the success and glamour of IBILE Games 2014.

    “As we close the IBILE Games, we invite you all to the South-West States Secondary Schools Games “DAWN Games” which holds in Lagos from  May16 to 24 ,” Tandoh said.

    No fewer than 180 secondary schools took part in this year’s IBILE Games with 39 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in attendance.

    SOME participants at the just-concluded table tennis event of the ongoing Lagos State Sports Festival, tagged “Ibile Games”, have commended the organizers for the opportunity to compete.

    The players in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) hailed the Games as coming at the right time. Ayo Omotara, a gold medalist in the men’s singles, said his determination paved way for him to win.

    Omotara, who also won a silver medal in men’s doubles, said because of his poor performance at the NTTF Pilot League, he was determined to excel at the Games.

    “I didn’t perform well at the pilot league and so, I was determined to prove myself at the Ibile Games.

    “I am happy that I was able to achieve and I thank the Lagos State Government for organising the Games,’’ he said.

    Alimot Ayinla, a student at Aunty Ayo Senior Comprehensive Secondary School, Obalende, who won a silver medal, said it was a great opportunity winning in the women’s singles in spite of its being her first appearance in a major competition.

    Ayinla added that she had learnt some lessons while participating in the Games.

    “ I am not the same again. I have learnt a lot and I will go and build on them.

    “Learning is the spice of life and I won’t relent in learning more, I thank the Lagos State Commissioner for Sports for this great opportunity.’’

    Sunday Onyikwu, a gold medalist in the men’s singles in the para event, class 10, commended the government for the exposure.

    Onyikwu told NAN that it was a tough competition and everyone fought so hard to emerge victorious.

    “It wasn’t a child’s play. We all battled it out because we all were not here for jokes,’’ he said.

    Philip Ambe, a gold medalist in men’s para singles, closed class 8 and 9, said the competition was worth it. Ambe said taking part in the Games had encouraged the upcoming table tennis players.

    FATAYI-WILLIAMS URGES ASSOCIATIONS TO DISCOVER NEW TALENTS

    BABATUNDE Fatayi-Williams, a member, Technical Committee for the ongoing Lagos State Sports Festival, “Ibile Games’’, on Friday urged the various associations to use the Games to discover new talents.

    Fatayi-Williams made the call the in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the National Stadium, Lagos, one of the venues for the Games.

    He said this was necessary for the state to achieve its aim of discovering and preparing athletes ahead of the upcoming national and international competitions.

    “This should serve as a scouting platform for associations to get more new talents into their teams. Every association needs more athletes to represent it at competitions.

    “Apart from discovering talents, the Games is also aimed to strengthen our athletes for forthcoming competitions.

    “Lagos State is using the Games as a prerequisite to check athletes shape and form towards upcoming competitions,” said the lagos State Swimming Association boss.

    “There are so many upcoming events in which these athletes will participate in and they need to be in good shape.

    “We have the maiden South-West Secondary School Sports Festival tagged DAWN Games involving Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun and hosts Lagos State in May.

    “We also have the National Youth Games and the National Sports Festival; they are few of the upcoming events.

    “We need to be prepared our athletes for all these competitions for the state o excel and this is one of ways of preparation.’’

    NAN reports that the competition which started on April 30 will end on May 11.
