Actors Guild crisis: Court sacks Ibinabo-led executive

The Federal High Court in Lagos Monday sacked the Ibinabo Fiberisima-led executive of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).

Justice John Tsoho declared their election null and void because it was conducted against a clear order of court that parties should maintain status quo.

Justice Tsoho ruled that the Incorporated Trustees of AGN acted with utter impunity in disobeying the court’s order.

“It is not in doubt that the parties in this suit are entertainers but the business of court is a serious one and it cannot be turned into a legal play and for this reason, the election is hereby declared null and void,” the judge held.

Justice Tsoho further ordered Ibinabo to henceforth stop parading herself as the AGN president.

Besides, Justice Tsoho ordered Ibinabo and all the national officers of her executive to render full accounts of monies generated by the AGN under her, including details of income and expenditure.

The judge specifically ordered that a comprehensive audit of AGN’s accounts be conducted within 90 days.

An actor, St. Maradona Mikevine, who was the National Treasurer in the election that produced another actor, Emeka Ike as AGN President, had filed the suit to contest Ibinabo’s election.

Mikevine, through his lawyer, Malcom Omirhobo, had contended that the election that brought Ibinabo into office was conducted in the face of a subsisting court order stopping it.

He urged the court to determine whether it was proper for an election to be conducted in the face of a substantive order, and whether anyone could parade themselves as AGN executive based on an election conducted against a court order.

The judge on October 26, 2011, ordered that status quo be maintained.

In an earlier suit, Emeka Ike had challenged the formation of an illegal government known as “National Unity”, to run AGN’s affairs.

The actor had sought an order of court reviewing the guild’s 2007 Constitution as it relates to the tenure of members of board of trustees.

He averred that the board, comprising: Mr Segun Arinze, Prince Ifeanyi Dike, Mr Emmanuel Oguguah, Mr Murphy Stephen, Mr Sunny McDon and Mr Okey McAnthony, had remained in office since July 13, 1999 when the guild was incorporated.

He had therefore, sought for an order setting aside the appointment of Arinze as President of the guild, as well as an order reviewing the provisions of the guild’s constitution.

Arinze, who was appointed as President of the National Unity of AGN, handed over to Ibinabo after the conduct of the disputed election.

AGN: Artistes drum up support for Ibinabo Fiberesima

A group of artistes, under the aegis of Ibinabo Fiberesima Campaign Organisation, have come together to pledge support for the candidacy of the current national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Ibinabo Fiberesima, for a second term.

A member of the group, actor Charles Inojie, who has pledged his support for the reigning president, said: “I don’t need a president who will share money to the members. We need a president who will put policies in place. The passion with which Ibinabo does it is what endears me to her and I support her for a second term.”

Also, actor Victor Iwuagwu, the current president of the Lagos State chapter of the guild, insisted that the actress and former beauty queen must continue her stay in office. “Even if she says she will not run, I will go and carry my Bishop and Vicar. We will drive to her place and beg her to run. She is the AGN’s messiah. I say no to selling of generators and stealing of air conditioners in the secretariat,” he added.

THE President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Ibinabo Fiberesima, was recently honoured with the African Woman of Worth Awards at the 2014 Africa Women in Leadership Conference (AWLC) held last month at the Banquet Hall, Crowne Plaza Perimeter, Ravinia, Atlanta, Georgia.

According to the organisers, she was picked for her leadership qualities and tireless efforts in the making of African films and entertainment.

    Ibinabo Fiberesima’s lamentation song

AT the Nigerian Entertainment Industry Health Insurance Convention held on Tuesday at the Grand Ball Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos,  Ibinabo Fiberesima, president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), shocked the gathering when she opened up on her hitherto pent-up anger.

To the chagrin of her listeners, she said: “I’m glad this convention is organised by the press themselves and a lot of you are here today. And I’m here too because I believe in the dream of NEIH and have done so much myself in that regard. But it pains me that every time I open the newspapers, all I see are negative stories about me. Somebody says something negative about me and it goes viral, courtesy of the press. And when we are talking about a serious thing as this, nobody writes about it. It is sad. I’m tired of reading negative stories about me; that’s the truth.”

Ibinabo revealed that she had, in the last two years, worked with Healthcare International  to provide health insurance for it members. “And today, being a member of Actors Guild of Nigeria is more or less simultaneous to being an HMO holder,” she added.

She also commended the efforts of the organisers for coming up with the idea and urged all to avail themselves of the opportunity of insuring their health against future occurrence.

From what appeared to be a lamentation song of sorts, it is obvious that, like the popular saying, “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”.  Even before she was elected president of the Guild, she had been enmeshed in one controversy or the other.

It will be recalled that the ex-beauty queen was once involved in a case of manslaughter, which dragged for some time before she was literally left off the hook.

Besides, her relationship with actor Fred Amata, which produced a child, was also another issue the actress had to grapple with.

Interestingly, in-between managing to keep a low profile, she emerged AGN president two years ago. Surprisingly, her name has since been resonating every now and then mostly over negative reports about her person.

Therefore, when it was her turn to speak on the occasion, she literally erupted, warning her traducers not to destroy the reputation she had laboured to build over the years.

  • Thumbs up for Bayray McNwizu, Eniola Badmus, Ibinabo

THERE is so much that can be said about  the AMAA 2014 red carpet. The stars spared no expense in stepping out in designer outfits. The trio of Bayray McNwizu, Eniola Badmus (Gbogbo Bigz Girls) and Ibinabo Fiberesima were among the award presenters for the night that got tongues wagging over their ravishing evening dresses.

Bayray, who rocked an Orange jumpsuit, looked radiant as she stood on the stage to present the first award for the night. Many of her fans couldn’t stop musing over her looks, while others wanted to know what she had been up to, acting- wise. The Cindy’s Note and Tales of Eve star has certainly not done badly for herself; otherwise, she wouldn’t be found on the AMAA stage.

The big, bold and beautiful Eniola Badmus, who spotted a white evening dress, got heads turning her way. Gbogbo Bigz Girls, as she is fondly called, was welcomed on the stage with a loud ovation by her fans and colleagues. And when she opened her mouth to speak, it was breathtaking! Lovely diction and a rare baritone voice were some of the adjectives many used in describing the actress. Recently, she revealed another side of her when she launched her own radio programme,’Your Head Dey there’ on Wazobia and Naija FM stations.

Nollywood’s ‘First Lady’, Ibinabo Fiberesima, seemed to have vowed that she will never be caught wanting on the red carpet. The ageless beauty, popularly called IB, mingled freely in a red sequin dress.

Nollywood stars warm up for BON Awards’ Children’s Day reading

AS part of the activities lined up for the 2014 Best of Nollywood (BON) awards show, actress Ibinabo Fiberesima,  president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria( AGN), will lead other Nollywood stars like Joseph Benjamin, Mercy Aigbe, Tamara Eteimo, Alex Ekubo and Yomi Fash Lanso, Sylva Oluchi, OC Ukeje, Dayo Amusa and Laitan Ogungbile to Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Tuesday, May 27, for a reading and mentoring session to mark the Children’s Day.

According to Fiberesima, “I am a Port Harcourt  babe and I love the city like I love life itself. That’s why I am excited about returning home on May 27, to be part of the Best of Nollywood Reading and Mentoring session with secondary school students who are the next generation of change makers.”

Eteimo, one of Nollywood emerging stars, said: “I couldn’t have come this far in my acting career without the influence and impact of Port Harcourt. It is for this that I’m really excited to be going back to my roots to share with the secondary school students some of the secrets that have propelled me this far. I’m sure the kids will learn a lot from my colleagues and me.”

In his view, Benjamin said: “I am a beneficiary of mentorship from people who I admire in the industry and beyond. So, at any point in time that I am called upon to mentor young ones or impart my success nuggets on those who look up to me, I don’t shy away from it. For me, this is one such platform to continue in the mentoring tradition,” said Benjamin.

The executive producer, BON awards, Seun Oloketuyi, said: “I am humbled by the eagerness of these respected actors to give back to youths in Port Harcourt. The celebrity reading session with secondary school students is the first of a variety of activities preceding the BON awards proper in October. The chosen celebrities are past winners and nominees of the BON awards, with the exception of Ms. Fiberesima, who is a passionate supporter of everything Nollywood and is, of course, president of the AGN. We look forward to an exciting time with the kids in Port Harcourt on Children’s Day.”

Ibinabo Fiberesima to Clarion Chukwura: stop tarnishing my image

The president of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Ibinabo Fiberesima, has debunked the rumour making the rounds that she visited the Presidency recently to seek a political appointment.

For some weeks now, the actress has been under attack, particularly from her colleague, Clarion Chukwura, following the recent visit of some members of the guild to the Presidency.

Clarion Chukwura had attacked the AGN president for not seeking President Goodluck Jonathan’s support on the issue of a legislation that could bring all actors in Nigeria under one body during her visit.

She also alleged that Ibinabo had gone to discuss the possibility of building a national secretariat in Abuja, while excluding the veteran actors during the visit.

However, Fiberesima, in an open letter, which has been generating mixed reactions, said: “I didn’t ask Mr. President for “a political appointment” as you have been mouthing. I thanked Mr. President for the few considerations he has made in appointing some practitioners into key government positions and requested for more of such appointments in line with our expressed desire to have more of our creative people in government and in politics, so we can be able to have people who will influence legislation that will be for the betterment of the industry.

“Ordinarily, I would not have replied you openly because I personally do not join issues with my colleagues-whether junior or senior on the pages of newspapers or on social media. Besides, as president of AGN, I should be seen to be uniting members of the guild and not causing disaffection, as your unfortunate outburst set out to do.

“It is for the purposes of correcting the falsehood and erroneous impression that your very unfortunate and jaundiced views might create in the minds of members of the guild, stakeholders and the public that I have written this letter to you.”
