    Ibrahim Abdul re-elected as Weightlifting Federation’s President

    In a show of solidarity and affirmation, the Board of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, (NWF) has returned Dr Ibrahim Abdul as its President for a second term.

    Dr Abdul’s re-election took place at the NWF 2025 Elective Congress held at the Gymnasium Hall, Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday.

    Although he was the sole candidate for the position, he polled 12 out of the 12 Executive Board Members’ Votes to retain his office for the next four years.

    In the other positions which was supervised by the National Sports Commission, the Director of Federation of Elite Athletes Department (FEAD), Nigeria Olympics Committee and others, Lawrence Iquaiborn was elected as the new Vice President of the Federation.

    The Weightlifting Africa Federation (WAF) and International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) member, polled a total of 8 votes to beat his opponent, Mr Nwankwo Innocent who had four votes.

    Similarly, in the Technical Rep position, Coach Onubaye Sefia defeated incumbent Christopher Nwadei 34 to 4 votes to be declared winner.

    The position of Athletes Representative was won by 2022 Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist, Osijo Taiwo who was the sole candidate.

    The new board members comprised of Dr Ibrahim Abdul, President:  Iquaibom Lawrence, Vice President, Ibeh Luke, Olarinoye Steve,  Nwankwo Innocent, among others.

    Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission NSC has commended the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation on its laudable achievements since Dr Ibrahim Abdul assumed leadership of the Federation in September 2021.

    NSC Chairman, Malam Shebu Dikko gave the commendation on Saturday during his address at the Federation’s Elective Congress in Abuja

    Represented by the Special Adviser on Strategy, Legal and Administration, Bar. Musa Amadu, the Sports Commission promised continued support to the federation to achieve more laurels.

    “The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation is one of the key players in terms of sports development in Nigeria. We are proud , as a National Sports Commission, of the accomplishments and successes the body has attained over the years.

    “Weightlifting has done a lot for this country and we need do everything possible to bring back those good old days. To do this, the men and women of the NWF board must  have passion for the sport,” he said.

    Abdul, two others get  continental weightlifting appointments

    President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr Ibrahim Abdul; former NWF President, Chimdi Ejiogu and Lawrence Iquaibom are the Nigerians elected as members of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa at the end of the election held yesterday in Moka, Mauritius.

    It was among the outcome at the end of the body’s Congress at the ongoing African Weightlifting Championship.

    Ejiogu, a former President of NWF, retained his position as the Vice President of the WFA.

    Dr. Ibrahim is now the Chairman Marketing Commission for WFA while Lawrence Iquaibom, a former Olympian and current Technical Official of the International Weightlifting Federation, has been elected as a member of the Technical Committee of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa.

    Coach Iquaibom, a retired Director of Sports in the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service was elected today in Mahebourg, Mauritius at the ongoing African Weightlifting Congress.

    The prestigious event brought together top officials and stakeholders from across the continent to discuss the future of weightlifting in Africa.

     “This forms part of my happy moments in weightlifting, I feel fulfilled that I am elevated in a sport I have committed myself, and this will help me contribute to the development of weightlifting in Nigeria, Africa and globally,” an excited Iquaibom,  said.

    At the Electoral Congress, Mr. Khaled Mhalhel from Libya was re-elected as President of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa while South African Dr. Kevin Duploy was elected as the 1st  Vice President. Other elected members of the Technical Committee are, Mr John Ogolla from Kenya, Mr Horst Sayler from Swatini and Mr Faried from Morocco.

    The congress which was observed by the 1st Vice President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Ursula Papandrea will be followed by the 2025 African Weightlifting Championship, scheduled from April 20 to 28, an exciting competition that will see some of Africa’s finest weightlifters showcase their strength and skill on the platform.
