UNDP to support NSCDC’s dispute resolution scheme – Official

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said on Monday it would support the conflict and dispute resolution programme of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

UNDP’s Security Consultant, Alhaji Mutiullah Olasupo, told newsmen in Maiduguri after a courtesy visit to the Borno Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, that the organisation would enhance the corps’ Alternative Dispute Resolutions (ADR) operation.

Olasupo said that UNDP would rehabilitate ADR centres in the state and equip them with modern equipment to improve the peace officers’ mediation techniques.

According to him, UNDP will also provide training, utility vehicles, communication gadgets and technical support to the corps to expose them to modern dispute management and resolution techniques.

The consultant further said that UNDP was in Borno to appraise the performance of the corps and consider areas of collaboration.

“Nigeria is one of the countries that had lost its Peace Sustainable Development Goal.

‘‘And it has become a global phenomenon that the only alternative to ending any sensitive conflict or violence is through dispute resolution.

“UNDP is keen in providing support to the Nigerian government and its security agencies in its peace building efforts.

“We discovered that NSCDC has added advantage in view of its close relationship with the civic population.

‘‘UNDP is very keen in providing new operational strategies to the corps.

“We discovered that most of the state commands of NSCDC were not conducive. So UN will provide additional peace clinics to build confidence on the civic populace.

“Boko Haram insurgency would have been tackled if a peaceful resolution was given a chance.

‘‘When you have crises in the society and you don’t react to tackle them on time, the crises will degenerate and become violent conflicts,” he said.

Olasupo expressed dismay over the large number of failed litigations due to prolonged and cumbersome court procedures.

Also speaking, the Borno Commandant of NSCDC disclosed that the command had resolved more than 5,000 disputes in the past six months, and registered at least 40 civic cases on a monthly basis.

Abdullahi said the alternative dispute resolutions department of the command had also recovered more than N50 million in the course of resolving disputes.

Islamic group condemns killing of worshipers in Anambra

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria on Monday condemned in strong terms the Sunday’s killings in St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu, near Nnewi, Anambra.

A gunman stormed the church and killed at least eight worshipers and injured 18 people.

The group made the condemnation in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi.

Abdullahi described the perpetrators as dare-devil murderers who stormed Ozubulu Catholic Church in Anambra State and killed scores of people during an early-morning mass.

“This is the hand work of terrorists within the community who were reportedly living abroad but came home for what only God knows.

“The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria condemns in strong terms this sacrilegious and terrible act.

“This crime must be properly investigated and culprits should be urgently arrested before they escape from the community.’’

According to Abdullahi, it is commendable that the Police in Anambra State have useful information on the background to the crime as narrated by the Anambra State Commissioner of Police.

“This information should be properly processed to give a lasting solution to addressing acts of terrorism of this nature which must not go unpunished.

“Meanwhile, the elites in our midst sending their children and wards abroad to study, must examine the negative aspects of their action on their children.

“Some of which include bad culture of killing innocent people with reckless abandon, joining irresponsible clubs where crimes are perpetrated to revenge certain acts, use of dangerous drugs and various acts of terrorism.’’

The national coordinator said that wealth should be channeled to positive ventures such as teaching the children the way of God and worshipping of Him whole-heartedly.

According to him, children should acquire the training they are given on how to imbibe and practice good character in addition to educational pursuit.

“All these could be achieved here in Nigeria easily.

“Parents and guardians living in the country should as well discourage their children from watching dangerous movies which serves as training ground from breeding criminally-minded children,’’ Abdullahi said.

Treat petitions on merit, lawyers urge NJC

Some lawyers have called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to treat all petitions before it on merit without favouritism or political bias.

They made the call in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi said that the recent call by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen urging Nigerians to write petitions against corrupt judges was pertinent.

Abdullahi, however, urged the council to handle all petitions and their investigations accordingly and devoid of prejudice.

“The National Judicial Council, which is saddled with the responsibility of disciplinary actions on judges so to speak, should treat petitions against judges on merit.

“We have heard of cases whereby some judges were being petitioned before the council and nothing was done while some judges had lost their jobs as a result of the petition.

“All petitions should be treated on merit and if possible it should be done in the public,” he said.

Mr Kola Adeyemi, while condemning alleged political undertones in the handling of high profile cases and petitions, reiterated the need for the rule of law in delivering justice.

“The council should intensify efforts in sanitising the system and in training judges.

“We need serious advocacy and penalties in purging the judiciary of any corrupt practice and serving judges need to sit up at this point,” he said.
