  • Onofiok Luke the man behind Nigeria`s only stipendiary legislative internship programme for youths

Today`s piece is by a guest writer, Ibrahim Adamu from Zamfara, who gives an in-depth analysis of the role of a young gladiator in the political ring, surprisingly in the South-South, do enjoy.

Akwa Ibom State remains my second home in Nigeria having spent a year in the State while on National Service. From the rafia city of Ikot Ekpene to the home of sea foods, Oron, I have come to realize that the people of that state are unique. Since serving four years ago as a Political Science graduate, I had taken time to understudy the political intricacies of a typical Southern Nigerian state with focus on Akwa Ibom. After examining how personalities can influence voting pattern among party lines within the three Senatorial Districts that make up Akwa Ibom, some people stand so dear in my admiration, chief among them is Mr. Onofiok Luke. Luke is a voice, but having watched the unfolding political drama in that state for some months now occasioned by the self-styled uncommon Senator Akpabio’s defection, I am compelled to query Mr. Luke’s ability to manoeuvre himself, his party and the people of Uyo Senatorial District to victory. And that is the crux of this piece.

In Akwa Ibom, within the 3 Senatorial Districts are people considered as opinion leaders, who wield enormous power in deciding the voting strength and pattern that can contribute to each party’s victory at the polls. In Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District with second highest voting strength after Uyo, Senator Akpabio and the National Legal Adviser of PDP, Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem, remain deciding decimals that will influence voting along party lines. In other words, with Senator Akpabio in APC, the PDP may find it relatively difficult to manoeuvre its way to victory in the Senatorial District. APC may have a slight victory because Senator Akpabio still commands little power to direct his kinsmen. At the end, it may be 55 to 45.

In Eket Senatorial District where Governor Udom Emmanuel hails, APC Governorship candidate Mr. Nsima Ekere is also from that axis. There is the possibility that Governor Udom may not get all the votes from this Senatorial District because Ekere, the APC candidate, also commands relative influence from his people. Oron Federal Constituency is also a factor for both Governor Emmanuel and Nsima Ekere in the Senatorial District.

In Uyo Senatorial District with over one million votes, APC remains in a state of disequilibrium in cruising to victory because the party lacks actors in this sphere. The recently defeated Senator Akpan Udoedehe would have pulled a force for APC, but with his persistent marginalization by the party, he has chosen to remain voiceless and inactive. Indeed, Uyo Senatorial District is where the two parties’ hope, faith and uncertainties lie.

In the face of these political uncertainties, Uyo Senatorial District remains the battleground for the two major political parties to decide who takes over the leadership of the state in the 2019 gubernatorial contest. Victory on this battlefield will depend on the political actors’ determination, and one of such political actors is the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr. Onofiok Luke who has chosen to remain a faithful follower of the umbrella party.

Many years ago as student union leader, Onofiok withstood the University of Uyo management to reject imposition of exorbitant school fees on students. He brought in his colleagues from different Universities who educated UniUyo students on why they should not comply. Luke’s uncompromising stance on that issue, thou it came with consequence, earned him lasting goodwill from youth, mothers and fathers whose childrens` education could have been halted if not for Luke’s intervention.

During his second term ambition for Nsit Ubium State Constituency seat, Luke`s gradual rise to fame became a serious threat to some forces within government, but as a known dogged fighter, Luke persevered to get nominated by his party to stand election. Even when he finally got to the House of Assembly, the same forces also stood against his emergence as Speaker despite the popular demand for him. At the appointed time, he emerged the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House. Luke seems to be a poster boy of destiny whose time to wrestle the state from a small group of selfish principalities has come.

Indeed, in Nigeria today, Luke is the initiator and sole financier of the nation`s only stipendiary legislative internship program.

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, a professional in politics may not be conversant with the political intricacies surrounding his re-election because the tide is more than boardroom politics. But he has Onofiok Luke by his side.

Luke represents a new generation of leaders in Nigeria which Akwa Ibom State is lucky to have. He has the oratory gift of persuading skeptics to align with his vision. He has the will power to stand against forces of injustice. It may not be out of place if one chooses to conclude that Onofiok Luke has the ears of millions of Akwa Ibom youth, most women and a good number of elders.

Welcoming art enthusiasts to the event the Thought Pyramid Art Gallery in Abuja on Monday on Abuja, a co-exhibitor, Omogbai, said the exhibition featuring series of photographs from the carnival, was a way of persuading the Federal Government to see the need for its continuity.

“These works show different faces of the Abuja carnival and we want this exhibition to provoke the authorities to organise another carnival.

“Our problem in this part of the world is continuity and the absence of documented history.

“The purpose of this exhibition is to celebrate culture which is dying due to foreign influence.

“Art needs to be given the right relevance. It is sacrifice to the nation,” he said.

He added that if the carnival is sustained it will enhance the growth of tourism in addition to the celebration of the cultural diversity in the country.

The Special Assistant to the President on Research, Mr. Sylvester Imhanode and Director of curatorial services of National Gallery of Arts, Mr Ibrahim Adamu were among the dignitaries at the exhibition.

In his remarks, Imhanode commended the quality of art works on display while urging the exhibitors to do more.

He assured the exhibitors that the Federal Government was willing to work with talented people that abound in the creative industry.

Also, while congratulating the exhibitors, Adamu stressed the need for young people to develop their creative skills to be self-reliant instead of searching for elusive white collar jobs.

He pointed out that the art industry was very lucrative, urging youths to follow worthy examples of the exhibitors.

Abuja Carnival celebrated annually, did not take place in 2017 due to problems of logistics, according to its organisers.
