  • Independence Day: ADC tasks ruling class on national unity

…launches national handshake initiative to address division in the polity

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has tasked the political class of the country in the urgency of working to unify the country.

The party regretted that Nigeria seemed more divided than when it gained in 1960 considering the pervasiveness of ethno-religous crises, insecurity and economic hardship facing the people.

The party said it has become expedient, as the nation is going into another election year to address the divisive challenges confronting the country to pave way for genuine unity, growth and development of the country.

On its part, Ibrahim Ahmed, the National Organizing Secretary of the party said it is instructive to note that a national Handshake initiate was launched on the Independence Day to assist in surmounting the seeming political division in the country.

As part of its activities to mark the Independence Day, Ahmed at a media session on Monday in Abuja said the ADC Handshake across Nigeria initiative involved members of the party across the country shaking hands with every Nigerian they meet as way of genuine reconciliation gesture.

He said: “Today marks 58 years of our country, Nigeria, as an independent sovereign nation. And for 58 years, Nigeria leaders have not done much to unify the people who have been glued to their ethnic cleavages and interests.

“For 58 years, we have continuously witnessed widening gulf among Nigerian ethnic nationalities rather than emerge as nationalists which our founding fathers and first Republic politicians professed and stood for.

“We have seen our leaders’ slump from national leaders to ethno-religious champions. Our national institutions are degenerating and going extinct.

“Insecurity is heightening in intensity with devastation of lives and property of Nigerians by fellow Nigerians. This cannot be allowed to continue”.

On its efforts towards addressing the challenges, Ahmed noted that ADC is only preoccupied with building a strong united Nigeria.

“At inception, ADC’S founding fathers thought deeply on the symbols that can translate into a unifying force for Nigeria.

“Given the devastating effects of insurgency, terrorism and ethnic cleansing in the country, the ADC set aside today, our independence remembrance day as a special day to showcase our love for unity, love, peace and tranquility in Nigeria through our handshake philosophy,” he added.

He said the initiative will be an annual event to be sustained with the hope that all Nigerian would buy into, adding “We appeal to all Nigerians irrespective of tribe, creed or religion to remember that our strength is in our diversity.

“We want Nigerians to love Nigeria as their country and desist from doing anything that will be inimical to the growth and development of our dear country.

“We want Nigerians to see their fellow country men and women as one indivisible people.

“ADC believes in the one united Nigeria. We believe that only Nigerians can make Nigeria great again. ADC believes in good governance and equality of opportunity for all and we believe that the state should be the servant of the people and that democracy will lead to the progress and well-being of our people and nation”.

  • Court frees two suspected Boko Haram members

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday discharged two persons, Ibrahim Ahmed and Sani Argungu, who were arraigned for alleged ties with Boko Haram, for lack of diligent prosecution.

Discharging the defendants, Justice Binta Nyako noted that Ahmed had been in detention since 2013 while Argungu had been detained since 2012 and the prosecution had yet to call its witnesses.

“The defendants have been in custody with no trial because the prosecution cannot bring its witnesses to court. So, I discharge the defendants and the suit is hereby struck out,” she said.

Nyako, however, said that whenever the prosecution was able to get its witnesses to attend court, the defendants could be re-arraigned.

The judge added that the defendants, although discharged, would be monitored and warned not to associate with any person of questionable character.

Ibrahim, who said in his statement that he was a security guard at the Government House, Sokoto, was alleged to be responsible for giving passage to Boko Haram members.

“The sister to one of the boys caught the duo while they were attempting to practice the act.

  • Probe of NIMASA contract scam ‘inconclusive’

A Federal High Court, Lagos, on Wednesday heard that investigation of alleged contract scam at the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) was inconclusive.

An Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecutor Ibrahim Ahmed said there were no documents showing whether the contracts, which were alleged to have been split, were indeed supplied.

He was testifying in the trial of former NIMASA Director-General Raymond Omatseye.

EFCC re-arraigned him before Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia on an amended 27-count charge bordering on contract scam.

Omatseye pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

His re-arraignment was due to the transfer of the former trial judge, Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako.

The accused person was charged with alleged illegal transfer of the agency’s fund and contract splitting estimated at over N1.5 billion.

During cross-examination by defence counsel Olusina Sofola (SAN), Ahmed said he asked for the “performance” documents, but was not given.

“I made request for the documents orally from the people who made statements. I also requested for the documents from the contractors,” he said.

The witness said he was, therefore, unable to determine the “performance” of the contracts allegedly awarded by Omatseye.

“According to statements made by the accused person and the contractors, the items were supplied.

“The contractors said the contract was performed. I requested for documents showing performance of the contracts but was not given.

“Because the documents were not available, I wasn’t able to confirm the contract performance,” he said.

Asked by Sofola if he stated his inability to confirm the contract performance in his statement before the court, the witness said he did not write down everything.

“It’s not everything I did in the course of my investigation that is contained in my statement,” Ahmed said.

The EFCC witness, however, said the materials supplied to NIMASA were “almost the same thing” and ought to be awarded to a single contractor.

He added that the contracts were allegedly split to come within the approved threshold for management approval.

Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia adjourned till December 3 for continuation of hearing.
