Nigeria heading towards anarchy, disintegration – Coomassie

The Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmadu Coomassie, said on Monday Nigeria is heading towards anarchy and eventual disintegration if the problem of bad governance is not addressed.

He lamented that corrupt practices have become endemic and nepotism now a common feature in most appointments and provision of quality education, potable water, efficient health services and power supply have been relegated to the background.

The ACF chairman stated these in Kaduna while chairing a conference on: “The North and The Challenge of Leadership,” organised by Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation and Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP).

He said the conference which is was organised to commemorate 52 years anniversary of the senseless massacre of the northern political leaders like Ahmadu Bello and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa in an ethnically motivated coup, must be used to seek for way out of the country “political mess.”

He said the era of Ahmadu Bello and Balewa was a golden period for Nigeria and the Northern region because they laid foundation and charted the course of the most unprecedented, purposeful and progressive development ever witnessed in the north.

Coomassie said: “Northern progress and Northern unity were uttermost in their thought processes while administering this large expanse of territory which was more than half of Nigeria. They ensured even development, justice and fair play for all the citizens. It was a period devoid of religious and ethnic bigotry where people from the numerous ethnic nationalities or creeds, held each other in mutual respect.

“Corrupt practices by both politicians were very minimal. Things like inflation of contracts or favouritism in the award of contracts were virtually non-existent. In short, the Northern Nigeria before January 15th 1966 was a territory that was characterised by visionary leadership and tireless dedication to duty to the community. Leaders were known for their integrity, sincerity and their humility.”

While noting that the defunct Northern Region has been broken down to 19 northern states administered by governors and members of the state assemblies for the purpose of bringing governance closer to the people, Coomassie said the reverse has been the case.

He added: “Political office holders pay scant attention to the needs of their populace. Corrupt practices have become endemic. Not only are contract sums inflated, more often than not monies earmarked for projects that will immensely benefit the populace are removed and the projects not executed.

“Nepotism has become commonplace in most appointments. People who lack the requisite qualification are appointed to sensitive positions in the public sector either because they are related to or are cronies to powerful political figures with resultants devastating consequences to the polity. Service sectors, such as in the provision of quality education at all levels, the provision of potable water, the delivery of efficient health services and power supply have all been relegated to the background.

“State governors today are busy building billion naira airports, government houses and other white elephant projects while their people live in wanton poverty and squalor. Youths go through education sector and graduate with no jobs available or means to start something on their own. This deplorable situation has made them vulnerable as tools of the political class to use to foment political violence or foot soldiers of ethnic or religious bigots and extremists to destroy the peace and serenity the north has been known for.”

MEND, Avengers armed robbers – N/Delta council

Supreme Niger Delta Youth Council WorldWide (SNDYCW) has disowned the Niger Delta Avengers and Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), describing their activities as pure armed robbery.

The President General of the Council, Prince Michael Newgent Eaton who stated this when the council under the guidance of former Senate president, Mr. Joseph Wayas met with the leadership of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kaduna on Thursday, stated categorically that, members of the MEND group and the Avengers should be arrested and prosecuted.

Ekamon remarked that they were in Kaduna to meet with leaders and elders of the region who have served the country well and want to see that the country remains as one indivisible entity.

“Our group are not militants. We are here to see how we can build one Nigeria. We want to condemn the activities of the Avengers and MEND. They are criminals. But better put armed robbers who are stealing the wealth of our land.

“We know them. We know that some of the Avengers have served in the previous government and they are even serving in this present government.

“If we are given the mandate, we will go and confront them in their houses.  So, we don’t want the President (Buhari) to be deceived by their antics. There is nothing in the real sense like avengers. They are playing pranks.

The President stated further that, the problem in the region was not the problem of the Federal government but rather their leaders who have been sabotaging the region because of their greed.

He contended further: “What is it that the federal government has not done for the region. We have OMPADEC, NDDC, 13 percent derivation, Ministry for Niger Delta, security votes. We don’t know what our governors are doing with the security votes.”

He remarked that it was based on this premise that they are organizing a summit in Edo State between the 27th and 29th of October to discuss the problem in the region, saying,’we are here to extend our hands of friendship to the people in this region (North). To seek their blessing and support. That’s why we are here with the former Senate president (Joseph Wayas)  who has never been invited by any anti corrupt agency. We also have the blessing of former Head of state, General Gowon.

Responding, the chairman of the ACF, Ibrahim Coomasie observed that the two regions had sustained a long period of friendship.

Represented by one of the elders in the region, Musa Liman, the ACF chairman said the forum believes in the doctrine of one Nigeria where equal justice and equity prevails.

Insecurity: Tsav flays Ringim for fleeing abroad

A Former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Abubakar Tsav, has criticised the former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, for taking up asylum in the United Kingdom because of current insecurity in Nigeria.

Tsav told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Makurdi that Ringim’s claims that he had gone to the UK to escape acts of terrorism by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, in the northern parts of the country was faulty.

He said the former police boss was merely hiding under the cover of insecurity to stay abroad.

The former commissioner argued that other former police chiefs, including M.D. Yusuf, Ibrahim Coomassie and Gambo Jimeta were all residing safely in Nigeria.

Tsav accused the former police boss of staying abroad “to hide from his numerous misdeeds while in office.”

“With every sense of humility, I want to sound it loud and clear that the former IGP Mr. Ringim might be running away for some unforeseen circumstances which he knows best.

“Let no one be deceived that it is the activities of these Islamic menace that has made him to run but rather, a subtle manner of escaping unpleasant consequence which is best known to him.”

Tsav urged the former police boss to return to Nigeria to join hands with other security experts to combat insecurity in the country.
