  • Court sentences teenager to 3 months in prison for stealing phone

    A Magistrates’ Court in Jos on Friday sentenced Umar Shaibu, 18, to three months in prison for stealing a phone.

    Magistrate Comfort Pam convicted Shaibu, after he pleaded guilty to the offence of conspiracy and theft.

    Pam, however, gave him an option to pay a fine of N3000 for conspiracy or two months in prison and N5000 or three months in prison for theft.

    She held that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other who would want to indulge in such act.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Feb. 10 at the `C’ Division Police station by one Jibril Abdullhamid of No 15 Dilimi Street.

    He said that while the convict stole the phone from the complainant while he was bargaining to buy sugarcane.

    Gokwat said the offence was punishable under sections 59(2) and 272 of the Plateau State penal code law.

  • Court sentences businessman to eight months in prison for stealing cellphones

    An Upper Area Court I, sitting in Kasuwan Nama in Jos on Wednesday, sentenced a 20-year-old businessman, Mohammed Sagir to eight months in prison for stealing two Techno phones, valued at N65, 000.

    The police charged Sagir with three counts of trespass, shop breaking, mischief and theft

    The judge, Lawal Suleiman who sentenced Sagir, gave him an option to pay a fine of N6,000.

    He also ordered the convict to pay N15000 to the complainant, saying it would serve as deterrent to others who would want to indulge in such acts.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Sept. 22, at the Laranto Police station by one Mohammed Sanusi of Katako Gareji Laranto , who is the complainant.

    Gokwat said that the accused broke into the shop and stole two Techno phones valued at N65, 000.

    He said that the phones were recovered from the accused during police investigation.

    After arraignment, he pleaded guilty to the offence .

    Gokwat said that offence contravened the provisions of sections 342, 347, 326 and 288 of the penal code law.

  • Businessman in court over rape of minor

    A 63-year-old businessman, Samuel Mbish, on Wednesday appeared before an Upper Area Court Judge n Kasuwan Nama, Jos, over alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl.

    Mbish, a resident of Bungus, in Mangu Local Government in Plateau, is facing a two-count charge of rape and intimidation of a minor.

    According to Police Prosecutor Ibrahim Gokwat, one Ayuba Auta of Exceller Church, Bungus, in Mangu, reported the case at Mangu Police Station on June 27.

    Gokwat alleged that the accused lured the little girl into the bush and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

    He further alleged that the accused, after raping the girl, gave her N500 and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it.

    The offences contravene Section 282 and 396 of the Penal Code, Gokwat further told the court.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    In his ruling, the Judge, Mr Lawal Suleiman, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with a surety in like sum.

    Suleiman said that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and should submit a copy of his driver’s license or permanent voter’s card to the court.

    The case was adjourned to December 3 for mention.

  • Court jails businessman two years for raping minor

    A Jos Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama, on Tuesday sentenced a 25-year-old businessman, Isiaka Rabiu, to two years imprisonment for raping a 6-year-old girl.

    The presiding Judge, Mr Yahaya Mohammed, handed down the sentence after the convict pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of rape, and begged the court for leniency.

    Mohammed, who did not give the convict an option of fine, said that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts.

    Earlier, the police prosecutor, Sgt. Ibrahim Gokwat, had told the court that the case was reported at the State’s Criminal Investigative Department on March 5.

    According to him, the accused person, a resident of Sabon Line in Farin-Gada, on the said date, lured the little girl, a resident of the same area, into his room and had carnal of her just after she returned from school.

    He further revealed that during medical investigation, some bruises were found on the private part of the victim.

    The prosecutor added that the offence contravened section 285 of the Penal Code.
