  • IGP reinstates Kogi police commissioner

    The Inspector- General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has reinstated the suspended Police Commissioner in Kogi State, Mr. Ali Janga.

    The spokesman of the state police command, ASP William Aya, who confirmed the development, said Janga returned to office on April 3 on the orders of the IGP.

    He said the police commissioner was reinstated after meeting the one-week ultimatum given to him by the IGP to re-arrest the suspects who escaped from police custody.

    Aya confirmed that all the six suspects that escaped from custody on March 28 had been re-arrested.

    He said the 13 persons that assisted the suspects to escape had been arrested in Lokoja.

    According to him, those arrested are commercial tricycle operators that ferried the suspects to safety after their escape and the owners of the houses where they slept after their escape from custody.

    He said all the suspects would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigation.

    Janga had on March 28 announced that six suspects including Kabiru Seidu a.k.a Osama and Nuhu Salisu, who mentioned Senator Dino Melaye as their gun supplier escaped from police custody in Lokoja.

    Following the incident, the IGP suspended Janga and appointed Mr. Sunday Ogbu as the state acting police commissioner.

  • Police recover 60 illegally acquired firearms,in Kano State

    The Police Command in Kano State says it has recovered 60 illegally acquired firearms and some ammunition in the state in the ongoing nationwide recovery of prohibited and illegal firearms.

    The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Rabiu Yusuf, made the disclosure when he displayed the arms and ammunition to newsmen in Kano on Wednesday.

    Yusuf said the recovered weapons were 37 rifles, 23 pistols, 127 cartridges, 309 rounds of .6mm live ammunition, 86 rounds of .3mm live ammunition, one US-made magnum bow and one sniper.

    He said that most of the firearms and ammunition were surrendered by their owners to the task-force set up by the command for the exercise.

    The commissioner noted that the exercise which was directed by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, was to check proliferation of firearms in most states in the country.

    He called on those who had yet to surrender theirs to do so, warning that anyone caught with illegal firearms in the state would face the full wrath of the law.

    Yusuf urged members of the public to report any person found with firearm to the nearest police station.

  • Police recover 119 firearms, others in Jigawa

    The Police Command in Jigawa has recovered 116 assorted firearms, 65 rounds of ammunition and six life cartridges in the ongoing nationwide recovery of prohibited and illegal firearms by the police.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, Bala Sanci, disclosed this at a news conference in Dutse on Tuesday.

    Sanci said the exercise was conducted in compliance with the directive of Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris to police commands to mop up, seize and recover illegal firearms in the country.

    The recovered arms are 104 locally made guns, five locally made pistols, three AK 47 rifles, three locally fabricated rifles two AK 56 rifles, one Dicon pistol and one pump action rifle.

    According to him, most of the arms were voluntarily surrendered by their owners to the police task force set up for the exercise.

    He added that the mop up was geared towards tackling the proliferation of firearms which had direct bearing on the prevalent insecurity in most states of the federation.

    “In compliance with the IG’s directives, the Jigawa State Police Command mopped up, seized and recovered large number of prohibited/illegal firearms and ammunition in the state.

    “The exercise tends to tackle the proliferation of firearms that has direct bearing on the current insecurity prevalent in most states of the nation.

    “So no fewer than 119 firearms, sixty-five rounds of ammunition and six life cartridges were successfully recovered,” he said

    Sanci called on those with arms in the state who had yet to surrender them to expeditiously do so before the task force embarked on forceful recovery of such arms.

  • Police recover 120 assorted firearms in Edo mop-up exercise

    Edo State Police Command said it has recovered 120 assorted firearms during a mop-up exercise that lasted one month.

    It said five suspects were arrested during the exercise.

    Firearms recovered include nine Ak47 rifles, one K2 rifle, one Beretta rifle, one TO6 rifle, 15 pump action guns, seven single barrel guns, two double barrel guns, two cut to size guns, two English pistols, 23 locally made single barrel guns, 12 locally made single barrel pistols, six locally made double barrel guns, 38 Dane guns, 150 love cartridges and one G-3 rifle.

    State Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kokumo, who presented the recovered weapons to newsmen at the police headquarters, said the decision to mop-up firearms was in line with directives of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

    Kokumo said the manufacturing of locally made guns has been traced to some neighboring states while efforts are on to apprehend the suspects.

    He said the period for the mop-up exercise has expired and only the IG can extend it.

    His words, “In the determination to reduce crimes, the IGP ordered that unlicensed firearms in the hands of individuals and private bodies be recovered.

    “The exercise has yielded positive results. Many of the firearms recovered are prohibited firearms. They are not to be seen in the hands of individuals or private bodies. They are not arms you can be give licensed to use.

    “In the mop up exercise, we have asked people to willingly submit their guns. We traced ownership of some to their late parents. Some of them do not know the implications of keeping firearms without license. We did the mop up based on intelligence gathered.”

  • IG removes Kogi CP as suspects escape from custody

    INSPECTOR-General Ibrahim Idris has ordered the removal of Kogi State Police Commissioner Ali Janga, following yesterday’s escape of six suspects from custody.

    Idris asked the Commissioner of Police, Federal Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Esa Sunday Ogbu, to proceed and take over as the state’s new police chief.

    He also redeployed the Commander, Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, the Divisional Police Officer ‘A’ Division, Lokoja and other police officers implicated in the escape for negligence, dereliction of duty and gross misconduct.

    The police, in a statement signed yesterday by Force spokesman ACP Jimoh Moshood, said the IG was dissatisfied with the circumstances surrounding the escape of the six suspects, including two principal suspects, Kabiru Seidu (a.k.a Osama) and Nuhu Salisu (Small), who indicted Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu in a case of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearm.

    The case already filed at the Federal High Court, Lokoja, was expected to come up in court yesterday.

    Moshood explained that the policemen on duty when the suspects escaped were facing serious disciplinary action.

    The removed Kogi State police commissioner, at a news conference in Lokoja yesterday, said the two suspects named Melaye as their arms supplier.

    Janga said the two suspects escaped at 3.21a.m. from the ‘A’ Police Division in Lokoja, where they were kept.

    According to the commissioner, both Seidu and Salisu escaped when they were supposed to be arraigned before a Lokoja Federal High Court, alongside Melaye and Alhaji Mohammed Audu, who was also named by the suspects as one of their sponsors.

    Janga identified Aliyu Isa, Adams Suleiman, Emmanuel Audu and Musa Mohammed as four other suspects that escaped from the custody.

    The police commissioner said 13 policemen, comprising five operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and eight conventional policemen on duty when the incident happened have been detained for interrogation.

    “The 13 police officers, who were on duty when the incident occurred, were defaulted and detained for interrogation,” he said.

    Janga added that the names of the six fleeing suspects and that of Melaye as well as Mohammed Audu have been declared wanted and sent for watch listing by the INTERPOL for arrest anywhere they are found.

    He appealed to residents to assist the police with useful information on the whereabouts of the suspects by reporting to the nearest police station.

    The police enjoined members of the public to about go their lawful duty as the command was in full control of the situation and determined to provide adequate security for live and property

    But Melaye gave the Inspector-General a 48-hour ultimatum to produce the two suspects involved in his case.

    He threatened to sue Idris for “mental assault” should he fail to produce the two suspects.

    He made this statement in a point of order he raised at the Senate yesterday, stating that the suspects are “presumed innocent until proven guilty and they also have right to life”.

  • IGP removes Kogi CP over negligence

    15 others to face disciplinary action

    The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ordered the removal of the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Ali Janga.

    The police commissioner was removed following the escape of the two principal suspects whose confession indicted Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu.

    Four other suspects also escaped from police custody in the state.

    The Commander of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) in the State, the Divisional Police Officer “A” Division, Lokoja and 13 other police officers implicated in the escape have also been transferred out of the state and are facing disciplinary action.

    The Force Spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, stated these in a statement on Wednesday.

    The statement reads: The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who was dissatisfied with the circumstances surrounding the escape of six  suspects including two principal suspects (Kabiru Seidu A.K.A Osama, Nuhu Salisu A.K.A Small who indicted Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu in a case of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearm already filed at the Federal High Court, Lokoja, which came up in court today, 28th March, 2018, has ordered the immediate removal of Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Ali Janga.

    “The Commander FSARS in the State, the Divisional Police Officer ‘A’ Division, Lokoja and other police officers implicated in the escape for negligence, dereliction of duty and gross misconduct in the escape of the six suspects have also been transferred out of the state and are facing serious disciplinary action.

    “13 other police officers are currently being detained and investigated for their roles in the escape.”

    The IGP also directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of Federal Operations, Esa Sunday Ogbu, to immediately take over as the new Commissioner of Police in Kogi.

     

     

  • Mobile policemen deployed to Borno schools

    The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has assured all schools in the North-East part of the country currently threatened by Boko Haram terrorists of adequate police protection.

    The IGP gave the assurance on Friday in Borno during a visit to Government College and Yelwa Government Girls College in Maiduguri.

    Idris said the police was determined to end kidnappings in the region and assured the students that each school would have policemen except in Yelwa Government Girls College where 10 police personnel were attached.

    The IGP said in the Girls College, five female and five male police details would be attached.

    He, therefore, appealed to the students and the managers of the schools to cooperate with the police personnel attached to their schools by reporting all suspicious characters to them for immediate action.

    He urged the students to shun all social vices and be law-abiding to avoid jeopardising their future.

    In their separate responses, the Principal of Government College, Mr. Abba Gana, and that of Government Girls College, Hajia Bintu Abakura, commended the IGP for the visit.

    The Inspector- General of Police ( I-G ) Mr Ibrahim Idris has assured all schools in the North-Eastern parts of the country currently threatened by Boko Haram terrorists, of adequate police protection.

    The I-G gave the assurance on Friday in Borno during a visit to Government College and Yelwa Government Girls College Maiduguri.

    Idris said the police were determined to end the spate of kidnappings in the region and assured the students that each school would have 4 policemen, except in Yelwa Government Girls College where 10 police personnel were attached.

    The I-G explained that in the Girls College, five female and five male officers details would be attached.

    He, therefore, appealed to the students and the managers of the schools to cooperate with the policemen attached to their schools by reporting all suspicious characters to them for immidiate action.

    He urged them to shun all social vices and be law abiding to avoid jeopardising  their future.

    He gave a personal donation of 20 bags of rice and a cow to the students of Government College Maiduguri.

    In their separate responses, the Principal of Government College,  Mr Abba  Gana,  and  that of Government Girls College,  Hajia Bintu Abakura, commended the I-G for the visit.

    They both assured him of their support in reporting all suspicious cases to the police and lauded him for the initiative.

    …IG gives 20th April as deadline for withdrawal of personnel

     

     

    The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris has absolved the Nigeria Police Force in the abduction of Dapchi school girls.

    Over 100 girls were abducted in February from Government Girls’ Secondary School, Dapchi in Yobe State.

    The IG also disclosed that Police Mobile Force would be deployed to all the schools in the northeast as part of measures to forestall future occurrence.

    The Police chief said this in Abuja on Tuesday at the Force Headquarters during a meeting with Squadron, Countet Terrorism Unit (CTU), and Special Protection Unit (SPU), Commanders.

    The meeting was held as part of preparation for the withdrawal of personnel from VIPs.

    On the deployment to schools in the northeast, the police chief said: “You are all aware of the abduction of Dapchi school girls by this horrible Boko Haram in Yobe States.  Though not the fault of the police, the incidence was a national embarrassment.

    “It is not the fault of the police because from what we had from the Commissioner of Police in the state, he said he was not informed or alerted before that attack took place but I think it is incumbent on us to take action.

    “Consequently, in compliance with the Presidential order, I have given a directive that all schools in Yobe, Adamawa and Borno state must have PMF personnel deployed to the schools. The PMF are to provide security in those schools.”

    The IG also said he will be going to the Northeast on Wednesday  (today) with the DIG Operations in order to have on the spot assessment of the deployment.

    On the withdrawal of Police personnel, the IG said the withdrawal would be nationwide.

    He said the men would be withdrawn latest 20th April, 2018.

    He said: “We are trying to seek the permission of the Commander in Chief before we conduct this withdrawal because it is going to be a massive withdrawal all over the country.

    “Of course you know the sentiment of people, whenever you take such actions; there would be lots of complaints. So, we are going to do it in a sound footing to make sure that once we withdraw people,  they are not taken back.

    “The Squadron and Commanders of PMF, CTU and PMF will sign an undertaken and any violation of those directives is going to be met with strict disciplinary action.

    “You have up to 20th April March to comply with these directives”, he added.

    The IG also described as worrisome attacks on Police personnel.

    He said the successes of the the attack shows that the personnel indulge in unprofessional conducts and poor training.

    The IG said: “Attack on Police personnel who are on official duties is quite worrisome. The rate at which personnel on special duties are killed and weapons carted away is alarming.

    “These incidences are due to lack of supervision, and unprofessional conducts by the men. They don’t have the training and therefore they don’t know what to do in the event of an attack.

    “They are never at alert and tend to forget themselves in the environment they operate. This attitude must be checked and solution must be found”.

    The IG said men posted to crisis areas must be fully kitted with guns, body armour, and enough ammunition.

  • Police fighting cultism frontally in Bayelsa – CP

    The Police Command in Bayelsa says it is fighting cultism in the state headlong with the collaboration of other security agencies.
    The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Don Awunah made the disclosure in an interview with the News men on Tuesday in Abuja.
    “The police, the state Government and other security agencies are fighting it frontally,’’ he said.
    The commissioner noted that, generally, the state was peaceful as it ranked the lowest among states in the country within the National crime index.
    “Bayelsa generally is a very peaceful state. Within the national crime index, the state ranks the lowest.
    “We have issues of cultism, a lot of misguided youths have formed all kinds of cult groups,’’ he said.
    The commissioner said that the few cases of crime in the state were driven by cultism that had permeated all strata of the state.
    Awunah said that all cases of kidnapping and armed robbery in the state were one way or the other linked to cultism.
    He said that the command had put in place “Operation Safer Bayelsa’’ as a measure to check crime and criminality in the state.

    “We have also put in place anti-cultism unit essentially streamlined to fight cultism and other related offences,’’ he said.Awunah blamed parents for not guiding their wards who had chosen to engage in cultism.

    “Our parents are not guiding their children enough. All we need to do is for people to cue behind the police to check cultism among youths in the state,’’ he said.
    On recovery of illegal arms, Awunah said that some members of the public had voluntarily submitted their arms to the police.
    The Inspector-General of Police,( I-G), Mr Ibrahim Idris, had directed all command Commissioners of Police to commence the recovery of prohibited firearms in the country.
    Awunah said that the command had recorded a huge success in the recovery of prohibited and illegally acquired arms in the state.
    The commissioner said that the state government had invested so much in security infrastructure.
