  • IG donates cow, others to Lagos orphanage

The Inspector General of Police (IG) Ibrahim Idris on Tuesday brought succor to children at the Safe Our Souls (SOS) Orphanage Home, Isolo, Lagos.

He donated a cow, several bags of rice, noodles and other food items to the centre as support for the children’s upkeep.

Idris who had earlier paid similar visits to Little Saints and Ijamido Orphanages located at Egbeda and Sango respectively, said the gesture was borne out of his belief that every child deserved a home and should be cared for.

The police chief, who was represented by the Area D Commander, Soji Akinbayo, an Assistant Commissioner (ACP), said taking destitute children off the streets would prevent their being used by hoodlums.

He said: “We came here to donate items to the SOS Children’s village. I  was sent by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Alhaji Ibrahim Idris  to bring these items for the use of the children here.

“The IG is trying to introduce a new dimension into the system. He wants people to know that despite the tedious nature of our work, we are humans too and we care for the less privileged in our midst.

“What we are trying to do is take some of these children off the street to avoid their being used by hoodlums to steal phones, other items. These homes were created to take abandoned children off the street and give them a family to grow in.

“We belief that when children do not have this kind of facility to stay in and people to donate, they become vulnerable and easily take to crime. I want the children to be encouraged and take their studies seriously. They should understand that no matter their backgrounds, they still have bright futures.”

Receiving the items on behalf of the facility, the Family Based Coordinator, Mrs. Bunmi Onifade said a total of 126 persons brought into the home have been resettled since inception.

She said they were resettled after they graduated from higher institutions and became independent, adding that the facility had about 123 children and teenagers it was currently catering for.

Onifade said: “We appreciate these gifts from the office of IG of Police and pray that God will replenish their pocket and their support to mankind will be noticed.”

  • Software for detecting stolen vehicle coming in October

…As dealers groan, seek review of automotive policy

The implementation of the deal that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris  approved for the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON) for vehicles’ data generation and enforcement will begin by the end of October.

The Nation on Tuesday gathered from the association’s President, Prince Ajibola Adedoyin in Abuja that “we have got the approval of the IGP. He is ready to work with us to make sure that the Nigeria Police Force curbs the issue of stolen vehicles, kidnapping or any crime that has to do with vehicles.”

Stressing that 90 per cent of crime has to do with vehicles, he submitted that hardly any crime can be successful without a vehicle.

He said that “If we have the data of where this vehicle is coming from and the government has it on its fingertip, it becomes easier” to detect criminal activities.

The association and the police, he said, are working to produce an Information Technology (software) that will recognize the chassis numbers of vehicles.

Adedoyin said that in collaboration with the police, AMDON is already has started the issuance of highly secured ID card to all its members.

According to him, once the police insert the chassis number of the vehicle into the software in their office, it will indicate wether it is among those that have been reportedly stolen or not.

The software and data implementation, he said, will reduce the  incidence of stolen vehicles in the country.

He said that “we have already begun the implementation. We hope that tentatively before the end of October we should be able to start it. But the ID card, we have already started.

There is a kind of partnership that we are into now with the police. With the approval of the Inspector General of Police. The association is partnering with the police to make sure that there a designated kind of ID card for every of our member that will be authenticated, and it will carry a chip that it can easily be identified, so that it could not easily be faked.

“At the same time there is this issue of before our members receive of sell a car, we are partners with the Nigeria Police Force to make sure that there is a way that we will come up with an IT system that once it comes with a number, you will just insert the chassis number of that car and send it to the data base of stolen vehicles.

“You will get a reply if it is okay or not okay. With that, any car that comes to our notice, once they do it and comes back contrary, you know the next thing to do. We are going to sensitize all our members nationwide on this. We want to reduce drastically the issue of stolen vehicles.

“I can tell you that IGP Idris has magnanimously given us that approval an we are working towards implementing it.”

He noted that in other countries, the Automative industry is highly regulated and supported by the government because of the accruing benefits.

Adedoyin said it is only when the government supports the operation that it can compel all the dealers to register in order to monitor their activities.

He added that “that is when we can have the data of everyone in the business. That is the only way the government can check and balance all those in this trade.”

With such data in place, according to the AMDON boss, it will be easier for the government to detect those that have paid their tax, the number of cars entering the country, and the contraband.

He noted that if all the vehicles must come through a registered company it will be easier to trace all the vehicles to their origin instead of allowing the business to remain an all comers affair.

He said that since there is no data of vehicles entering into the county it is difficult to trace some of companies when necessary.

Adedoyin said that the regulation will be of immense benefit to the government in terms of security and economy.

  • Former Kogi gov. denies plan to foist son as guber candidate

No amount of distraction will distract former Governor Ibrahim Idris from leading a credible opposition that would return the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to power in Kogi State.

A statement signed by the media unit of the former governor’s office, described reports alleging the Idris of attempting to impose his son as governor as spurious, wicked and satanic.

It described the said report as one that would not distract the former governor, adding that the sponsors have failed in their bid at blackmailing him.

“The former governor is too focused to be distracted”, it said.

According to the statement: “Alhaji Idris is a successful businessman and respected politician with tremendous respect for democratic ethos, dialogue and team work, credentials that set aside his nine years in public office for unequalled peace, cohesion and development in the state”.

“Idris is responsible father who through the grace of Allah has withheld nothing from the training of his heirs, children, and his vast dependents; believes in giving them the best education possible to earn them a good start in life and to be able to hold their own anywhere and at anytime.

“Certainly, he does not believe in close-circuiting or abridging the process to fast track success for anyone.

“The former governor does not believe in imposition of candidates, nor does he have power to impose his choices on others. He has repeatedly cautioned against it as an unjust practice and has consistently been working along with other leaders to provide a level playing ground for all PDP aspirants in the state. This is his vow to the people.

“As a major stakeholder in the party, many aspirants have without doubts, consulted Alhaji Idris about their ambitions. The former governor wishes to assure all aspirants and indeed members of the PDP that he has no preferred candidates, whether such are his biological, political or foster sons, anointed for any of the offices. The task of rescuing our fatherland from bad leadership cannot be a family affair. Rather, it is a task for all and must be discharged selflessly.”

It described the purveyors of the report as harboring intentions not noble, as it is untrue, evil and does not represent the thinking of Alhaji Idris.

They therefore urged the people of Kogi State, PDP members and all lovers of freedom to disregard and dismiss same as concoctions “from the pit of hell.”

  • Bayelsa probes killings, vows to prosecute perpetrators

The Bayelsa State Government on Friday said it had launched investigations into the violence that left three youths dead and many others injured in Brass Local Government Area of the state.

The government vowed to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all the hoodlums including high-profile politicians fingered in the bloody clash.

Brass, an oil-rich local government area, has been on the spotlight for bloody clashes involving thugs suspected to be members of the two dominant political parties in the area – the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in Government House, Yenagoa, the State Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah (retd.), also confirmed the nine-hour curfew (9pm to 6am) imposed in the area saying it remained in force.

Jonah said preliminary investigations showed that the mayhem was sponsored by some highly-placed individuals for political purposes.

He said the state government directed the law enforcement agencies to ensure thorough investigation into the activities of the hoodlums and ensure the prosecution of all persons indicted despite their statuses.

Jonah urged all good people of the state, especially the people of Brass to remain law-abiding, insisting that the government would take all necessary lawful measures to maintain peace, law and order.

He said: “It has come to the knowledge of the state government that on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, some hoodlums at Ada-Ama, Twon-Brass in Brass LGA of the state attacked peace loving members of Twon-Brass community with knives, guns and other dangerous weapons and injuring several persons and destroying property valued several millions of naira.

“The said persons kept the entire Twon-Brass community under seige for several days and perpetrated mindless violence in the community. Security personnel eventually arrested some of the hoodlums with guns and other dangerous weapons along with very substantial sums of money.

“Men of the Nigeria Police only succeeded in bringing the situation under control on Wednesday, August 22, 2018.

“The state government is greatly dismayed that Twon-Brass, which is a major oil exporting terminal in the country is recently being used by non-state actors as a hub of criminal activities with its attendant adverse effect on the economy of not only the state, but of the entire country.

“The state government has consequently imposed curfew in Twon-Brass from 9pm to 6am. All residents of the area are expected to comply with the curfew, which will be lifted as soon as normacy is restored.”

Also, the Caretaker Chairman, Brass LGA, Victor Isaiah, and a member representing Brasa Constituency 1 in the State House of Assembly, Israel Sunny-Goli, are at loggerheads over the bloody clash that occurred on Monday.

It was learnt that the victims of the clash were suspected thugs loyal to Isaiah and Sunny-Goli of the PDP and the APC respectively.

The APC on Thursday sent a protest letter to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, over the incident, claiming that two of its members were killed in the violent attack by PDP thugs.

But Isaiah countered the allegation, saying that the thugs were sponsored by Sunny-Goli.

Isaiah distanced the PDP from the violence, alleging that the youths made attempt on his life by attacking his personal lodge with guns and other dangerous weapons.

He said attempts by the alleged APC thugs to gain entrance into his official lodge were resisted by the LGA security volunteers group.

Isaiah said: “A few days ago, some suspected armed APC youths attacked the local government council aid and PDP youths. Now, they attempted to assassinate me but met my absence and were resisted by our security volunteers.

“One of the dead thugs, Kelly Ikurusi, the mastermind and leader of the Monday, August 20 failed assassination attempt on my life is a member of the APC in Brass and a known notorious criminal and cultist who escaped from police Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Yenagoa last year.

“Before his death, he was under police wanted list for breaking out of police (SARS) custody. After the successful cell break, he ran to Brass and was provided refuge by the APC chieftain.”
“The reports of his misdemeanors are  known in Brass as he is daily fingered for armed robbery, snatching of phones, harassment of indigenes, among others”

He called on the Federal Government, the Inspector General of Police and other relevant security agencies to probe without bias, the alleged activities of the APC chieftain and ensure security in the community.

The APC, on its part, accused the PDP of desperation to take over the area in 2019.

The party alleged that the PDP was working in consonance with some individuals, hired mercenaries and security agencies to kill and unleash mayhem, threats, intimidation, unlawful arrests and detention of opposition members across the state.

Sunny-Goli had, in a statement, alleged that the violence was allegedly initiated by the PDP through the acting Chairman, Victor Isaiah, to intimidate, kill and chase out opposition members from Brass.

  • ‘No crisis in Kogi PDP’

The Kogi State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has described its rising popularity as the fear of the opposition political party and mischief makers.

The PDP in a reaction to what it described as sponsored reports, described allegations of crisis in the state chapter as baseless, false and neither here or there.

It said that the state governorship primaries is due for next year, and wondered “how some mischief makers would be crying foul over a process that has not began and has no date.”

It commended the efforts of Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, former hovernor of the state, at rebranding the party, adding that it has brought in former bigwigs back into the party.

“The Kogi State PDP make bold to announce that its membership rank has swelled tremendously in the last few months. On a daily basis, the party keep receiving mass decampees from the opposition party to its fold, a feat that makes the PDP a bride; the party to beat in the state, with every indication pointing to the fact that it would reclaim Lugard House, the seat of government,” it boasted.
