ICNL honours Adekola, Raimi-Hassan on retirement

Inland Containers Nigeria Limited (ICNL) over the weekend celebrated the retirement of two of its longstanding stalwarts, former Managing Director, Ismail Yusuf Adekola, and former Kaduna Inland Dry Port (KIDP) Manager, Rotimi Raimi-Hassan.

The event, held in Lagos, was filled with tributes and reflections on the distinguished careers of both men, whose combined service spanned over six decades.

Speaking at the retirement party, current ICNL Managing Director, Omotayo Dada, described Adekola’s 33-year journey in the organisation as “an illustrious career defined by excellence, innovation, and unwavering dedication.”

Adekola joined ICNL in 1990 as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. His exceptional performance led to immediate employment, and by 1991, he was appointed Assistant Manager, Accounts. Over the years, he climbed the corporate ladder, serving as Depot Accountant, General Manager/CEO in 2002, and eventually becoming the company’s Managing Director in 2010.

“Mr Adekola’s leadership ushered in a new era for ICNL. He modernised our operations to meet global logistics standards, championed the establishment of the Kaduna Inland Dry Port, and implemented transparent financial systems that strengthened the organisation from within,” Dada noted.

Under Adekola’s tenure, ICNL expanded its national presence through infrastructure development and logistics enhancements, while also playing a prominent role in influencing industry policy and standards both locally and internationally.

A fellow of several professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and Chartered Institute of Shipping (CIS), Adekola is also a member of the Institute of Directors (IOD) Nigeria.

Dada said of Adekola: “Beyond the boardroom, Mr Adekola is admired for his humility, integrity, and service to humanity. A devoted family man, mentor, and community leader, he exemplifies calm, principled leadership and a deep commitment to people. As we mark the close of an era, we do not just bid farewell to a Managing Director; we celebrate a legacy of vision, purpose, and positive impact. His influence on ICNL and the wider industry will endure for generations.”

Turning to Raimi-Hassan, Dada praised his 31-year tenure with ICNL, which began on February 3, 1993, during a pivotal period in the company’s evolution.

He said: “Mr Raimi-Hassan’s dedication, discipline, and professionalism were evident from the start. He began as Assistant Operations Manager and quickly distinguished himself through innovation and integrity.”

Raimi-Hassan went on to serve in various leadership roles, including Assistant General Manager for Operations and Head of the ICT/ICD Department. His most defining contribution came in 2017 when he was appointed the Pioneer Port Manager of the Kaduna Inland Dry Port. Under his guidance, KIDP became a strategic hub for cargo handling in Northern Nigeria.

Among his notable achievements were the streamlining of logistics and container handling processes, leadership in ICT integration that digitized port operations, and the establishment of partnerships that enhanced service delivery. Raimi-Hassan also earned degrees in Business Administration and Law, reinforcing his commitment to lifelong learning.

“Mr Raimi-Hassan has not only shaped ICNL’s present but also inspired its future. Known for his calm demeanor, principled leadership, and compassion, he is celebrated as a humble family man, a respected community elder, and a true gentleman. We do not just celebrate a retirement; we honor a legacy of purpose, passion, and progress,” Dada stated.

Raimi-Hassan is a member of multiple professional institutions, including the Chartered Institute of Marine, Port and Terminal Management Professionals (USA), Chartered Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (CIMN), and the Institute of Export of Nigeria, among others.
