  • ICSAN’s Public Practice Day to hold July 27

    The Institute of Chartered Secretary and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) will hold this year’s Public Practice Day for chartered secretaries, company secretaries, lawyers and administrators on July 27.

    The event will hold at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Conference Centre at 10, Nurudeen Olowopopo Street (near MKO Abiola Gardens) in the Central Business District of Alausa in Ikeja, Lagos.

    The theme of this year’s event is: Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria.

    A statement by the Registrar/Chief Executive, Mrs Nkechi Onyenso, said the theme was apt because of Nigeria’s current business and investment climate. The nation is ranked 169 among 190 economies in the ease of doing business, according to the latest World Bank annual ratings.

    The statement noted that the low rating would make it difficult for Nigeria to use its status as the African largest economy to the fullest advantage.

    The keynote speaker is Alhaji Bello Mahmud, the Registrar General of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), while the second speaker, Mr. AdesolaAmoo, an Assistant Director at the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), will present a paper on the topic, titled: Corporate Governance and the Integrity of Financial Statements.

    Participants will interact with the Registrar General of CAC and Mr. Amoo on the current initiatives of the CAC and FRC.

    ICSAN chief advises Buhari to be transparent

    The President, Institute of  Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), Dr  Nat Ofo  has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to run an open government, adding that it is the approach  that will strengthen  economic  growth  and   save  the  country  from  distress.

    Speaking to reporters after his investiture in Lagos, he said there was need   to create  a better way of looking at governance that gives Nigerians,  investors, employees and the wider public greater confidence in the transparency and accountability of the  economy .

    Ofo said any attempt to restore public faith in business must start with good corporate governance.

    He  said  one  of the  focus  areas of his regime as ICSAN president will be  to work  with the government  to  ensure  better corporate governance, effective  checks and controls  across  the  economy.

    He noted that corporate governance is an increasingly important issue as the government has   started to refocus efforts from survival to renewed growth.

    As  an  institute, he  said  ICSAN prides  itself as the  custodian of corporate governance,  adding that it is evident in the  level of the  involvement of  its members in the  development of codes of corporate governance in the  country.

    He said: “As is well known, succession planning is a critical element in management and corporate governance. It is therefore commendable that we are witnessing a smooth and seamless transition of power from one president to another.”

    He commended the immediate past president, Dr Suleyman Ndanusa for smooth transition and for laying the foundation on which the institute will move and make progress.

    He  said  his  administration intends to collaborate with  other professional bodies, regulators organisations and other professionals to spread  the  corporate  governance message  as well as pursue linkage with  higher institutions in a bid  to  build and improve  on  capacities.

    Ndanusa commended President Buhari for taking steps that will restore integrity to the economic system with   rigorous emphasis on values and stewardship.

    Looking broadly at the system, he said changes are needed to ensure the economy recovers.

    Ndanusa  said the  government  is  taking  steps  get  economy  back on the growth  path.

    He  argued that the growth will lead to trust in business and government.

     

  • ICSAN seeks employment for youths

    The Federal Government has been told to provide employment for youths to reduce poverty.

    This would also remove them from the streets, as well as, being used for other negative tendencies, such as insurgency.

    The President, Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), Dr. Suleyman Ndanusa, made the call at a briefing in Abuja on the 38th Annual Conference and Dinner of the body billed for next Tuesday and Wednesday at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    According to Ndanusa, the conference has three sub-themes: “Shareholders activism: Any added value to governance? “Governance and security: the cost of doing business in Nigeria”; and corporate compliance: The role of the chartered secretary”.

    He said the provision of jobs would also reduce insecurity.

    He emphasised the need for education and the enunciation of economic policies that would  affect the citizens.

    The ICSAN boss said the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country should put smiles on the faces of Nigerians. He stressed the need for an impact assessment of government’s policies, pointing out that the country did not lack good policies but implementation.

    On energy, Ndanusa, also Chairman, Securities and Exchange (SEC), praised the Federal Government for taking the bold step in privatising the sector.

    He expressed confidence that the power sector would improve, adding that privatisation was a process.

    The ICSAN chief said the level of decay in the sector would take some time to address, urging Nigerians to be patient with the government.

    He called for the promotion of good Corporate Governance.

    The conference is expected to attract participants from both the private and public sectors, the academia, as well as, professionals both at home and abroad.

  • Ndanusa’s investiture holds Thursday

    THE Chairman, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr Abdu Suleyman Ndanusa will be installed as the President, Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) on Thursday at the NICON Luxury, Abuja.

    According to a statement by ICSAN’s Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Dele Ogunde, Ndanusa ‘’is a technocrat par excellence, thorough bred professional and an excellent administrator. He is a man whose path cuts across the private and public sectors of the economy”.

    Ndanusa has Bsc(Economics) and MBA from the Ahmadu Bello University(ABU), Zaria. He began his career in the former Continental Merchant Bank (CMB) and left as Assistant General Manager (AGM) in 1993 for Empire Group Ltd as Group Managing Director (GMD). He left as chairman.

    ICSAN chief decries corruption in Nigeria

    THE President of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), Mr Olatunde Busari, has decried the large scale corruption in the country.

    Busari, who made the remark at a dinner as part of the Annual Conference of the Institute in Abuja, described corruption as a hydra-headed monster, which kept rearing its head in all the organs and agencies of government.

    “The malaise further ridicules the system to the extent that even when culprits are apprehended, it does not appear that we have effective machinery for thorough investigation, prosecution and sentence according to the law”, he said. The ICSAN boss said there were various examples of private and public officers that engaged in corrupt practices and were today walking the streets as free men. According to him, this gives an impression that corruption is rewarding in the country.

    Busari said to create the desired environment for investment, the government must develop effective legal regime and structures strong enough to apprehend, investigate and prosecute corrupt officers in Nigeria.

    On energy, he advised the Federal Government to set the necessary machinery in motion to ensure transparency and efficiency in the on-going reform in the power sector.

    The ICSAN boss said the absence of infrastructure in any economy was inimical to business investment and sustenance.

    ”It is inconceivable that Nigeria cannot boast of 24- hour uninterrupted power supply nationwide despite of the nation’s over 50 years of independence”, he said.
