•Eagles forward nets 16th League goals

SUPER EAGLES forward, Brown Ideye scored a brace for Ukraine giants, Dynamo Kiev in their 5-0 away win over Zorya in a Ukraine Premier League tie on Saturday.

The Nigeria international who returned to goal scoring form for the Kiev-based outfit in last weekend’s 1-0 win over Karpaty has now taken his tally to 16 league goals in the Ukrainian topflight this term.

Ideye, who will be rejoining the Eagles fold for the busy June schedule that includes the 2014 World Cup qualifying matches and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, scored in the 38th and 81st minutes as Dynamo Kiev dispatched Zorya with the opening goal from Andriy Yarmolenko in 29th minute courtesy of an Ideye assist. Other scorers on the day include Roman Bezus 88th and Oleh Husyev (90’+5). Interestingly, the encounter also paraded out of favour, Eagles left-back Taye Taiwo alongside Lukman Haruna. While Taiwo played all 90 minutes with Ideye, Lukman was replaced by goal scorer Bezus on the 62nd minute.

Dynamo Kiev are now second on the league log with 53 points from 25 matches, just a point above third-placed Metalist with one outstanding game as the battle for UEFA Champions League spot continues.

Ideye eyes Ukraine PL golden boot

Super Eagles and Dynamo Kiev striker Brown Ideye has revealed his desire to emerge the top goal scorer in the Ukrainian premier league by the time the current season comes to a close. Ideye has found the back of the net 13 times this campaign for Dynamo in 21 appearances.

He faces a tough battle of the goal king title against Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan who is already with 19 goals, six ahead of the Nigerian at second spot.

The 24-year-old in an interview on Dynamo’s official website revealed that he would be happy to end the season as the highest goal scorer but insisted the club’s success is more paramount to him than personal achievements.

“I really want to become the top scorer of the Ukrainian championship. There are still 9 games, in which I will try to score as many goals. Truth is I’m most interested in winning with my club Kiev “Dynamo” and not interested in personal achievement,” he said.

Ideye’s goals have had a great influence on the club’s position on the log this season and the Nigerian who has not scored for the Kiev club since his return from Africa Nations Cup in South Africa will hope to improve on his game and get more goals to help his side finish the season on high.

    Ideye misses Emenike partnership

Super Eagles striker, Brown Ideye, has declared that his strike partner at the African Nations Cup, Emmanuel Emenike, will be missed when the team faces Kenya in Calabar on Saturday.

The 24-year-old formed a deadly bond up front with the Spartak Moscow forward which helped Nigeria to win a third Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in February, Supersport.com reports.

But Emenike is currently out injured and misses out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying against the Harambee Stars of Kenya.

Ideye said he had built a “good relationship” with Emenike off the pitch leading to their telepathic performance for Nigeria at the AFCON.

The ex-Ocean Boys’ man is however prepared to play up front with any other striker should he be selected for the game against Kenya.

“I played with him, he’s a great player. I built a good relationship with him outside of the pitch and it helped us a lot. Apart from playing on the pitch you have to have a close relationship with other players to help team spirit so that it will rub off on the team in matches.

“I’ll really miss him (for his style of play) but I just have to work with whoever the coach picks to play with me,” said Ideye.

Seattle Sounders forward, Obafemi Martins, who has similar power-playing style with Emenike, might start up front with Ideye.

Also, Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih attacking midfielder, Babatunde Michael, is available for selection and has same bulldozing quality.

Ideye has played 12 times for the Nigerian national team and scored two goals.

  • Ideye: It’s victory or nothing

    Ideye: It’s victory or nothing

Super Eagles and Dynamo Kiev top scorer, Brown Aide Ideye believes playing for the Nigeria senior national team remains a reference point in his career.

In this interview with SportingLife’s Uchenna Ajah and Tunde Liadi at the team’s Transcorp Hotel Calabar, the second top scorer in the Ukraine topflight insists his family, especially his mum remains his greatest source of inspiration. The former Ocean Boys and Sochaux ace also spoke on some salient issues. Excerpts…

Brown, Nigeria will be up against Kenya’s Harambee Stars today. How do you feel returning to the team again after winning the African Cup of Nations in South Africa last month?

As a player it’s good to be here again and looking forward to another good outing.

What are your expectations with this squad?

I’m already looking forward to qualifying for the World Cup. As a team we have to qualify for the World Cup and make a good impact for ourselves and for the country. So, being here, we all know that the match against Kenya is important to all of us.

Since your last goal for the Super Eagles against Mali in the semis of the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa, you have not been among the goal scrers in your last appearances for Dynamo Kiev in the Ukraine Premier League. Should we be expecting Ideye’s name on the score sheet against Kenya?

I will do my best against Kenya if called to action by the technical crew and by the grace of God I will be back scoring for my country again if the chances come by.

How have you settled down with the rest of the squad after you long trip from Kiev?

“The training has been good. I played a game last weekend and, for the fitness level, I’m very much okay. I believe if we work hard as a team against the Kenyans, things will go well on the pitch.

When you look back at Eagles’ performance at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa, what present do you think this squad can give to you teeming fans?

I believe if we play well as a team by giving over 110 percent during the match, it will show the fans the stuff we are made of. As a team we are playing at home and nothing less than victory will be good enough to say a better thank you to Nigerians for all their support.

Away from the Eagles, when you look back at your career what would you say has been your most challenging moment in life?

I thank God for putting me where I am today and for directing my part in life. For me, being in the Super Eagles is a great thing in my life and I want to appreciate God for making all these possible…but as for the most challenging, I would say it was after the FIFA U-20 world Cup in Canada. Coming back from Canada, I never believed I would be in the Eagles camp today. It is not just because of the way I played, but the fact remains that Nigeria is so blessed with talented players both home and abroad, especially in Europe. So, being here today is a great experience.

Are you still hopeful of claiming the Ukraine Premier League top scorer award despite the 6 goals difference between you and the current leader Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrik Mkhitaryan?

Everything is possible in the game of football. We have about 9 games left in the Ukraine Premier League and I can still make it to the top scorer award.

Finally, what has been your greatest inspiration in life?

I would say my family; especially my mother. For me, my family matters most and I want to appreciate God for them all.

We pray that on match day you will be among the goal scorers.

    (Laughing) Thank you.

    Ideye: We can rule Africa

Dynamo Kyiv of Russia forward, Brown Ideye has said that the Super Eagles team campaigning in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa is capable of winning the coveted trophy.

In a chat with NationSport on Monday, the former Ocean Boys striker said the players are more determined now than when the competition started, adding that this was evident during the massive game against the star-studded Ivoirians on Sunday.

Ideye assured that the team is ready for Wednesday’s semi final match against Mali at the Moses Madiba Stadium in Durban.

“In the first place we knew there was need for us to redeem our image especially against the highly rated Ivoirians.

“With the victory against Ivory Coast, I think we are ready to rule Africa. Mali shouldn’t stop us. We are prepared for the battle, we also prepared for the victory because we all knew that success does not come easily and that is why we put everything into the match.”

“I am very proud of our attitude. We show great potentials, we’ve shown that we can cover more grounds. We also showed that we have much to prove and improve on. It was a pre- determined victory for us and we will keep pushing for greater glory,” he said.

    …Delirious Mba praises team mate

After scoring a stunning goal that made the difference in the quarter final match against Cote d’ Ivoire Super Eagles’ newest revelation, Sunday Mba has described his performance as “superlative”

Mba, who was also name the Most Valuable Player of the crunchy encounter, scored the winning goal that gave Nigeria a semi final ticket on Sunday.

While dedicating the goal to his team-mates, the former Warri Wolves midfielder said because the game of football is a collective effort, it will be improper to take the glory alone.

“In as much as I will not want to hide my feelings about the role I played in the match and the success achieved so far in this competition. I want to say that there is no way I could have done it on my own without my team mates. I couldn’t believe I will make such a huge impact in such a massive game.

“Now that we have conquered our fears, I think we can go all the way in this tournament. With this victory, we are aiming higher. We can conquer more opponents but we must be careful not to be carried away. Mali will be tough but we need to show more character,” an excited Mba said.

    Oliseh cautions Eagles over complacency

Former captain of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh has warned the team not to get carried away by Sunday’s victory over the highly-rated Ivoirians.

While he commended the Eagles for their five- star performance against the more experienced Elephants, Oliseh said the Malians are also capable of giving them a run for their money in the semi final clash on Wednesday.

The former FC Cologne midfielder, while speaking from the SuperSport studios, said a lowly rated side like Mali has the capability of becoming spoilers.

“We were up against a formidable opponent and I Knew that for us to win we have to do better which the boys did. Kudos to them,” he said.

Asked if Nigeria should lose sleep over Mali after eliminating tournament’s favourites, Cote d’ Ivoire, Oliseh said: “It is not about losing nerves but we have to be careful, if the Super Eagles get complacent they can lose the game.”

    Kanu tips Eagles for title

Ex-international and Nigeria Football Ambassador, Nwankwo Kanu has said the Super Eagles has what it takes to the African Nations Cup in South Africa.

Speaking to NationSport on Monday in Rustenburg, South Africa, the former Africa Player of the Year said he is one of the few Nigerians, who had believed in the ability of the team to excel before the AFCON got underway in the rainbow nation.

He added that his confidence in the team has not depreciated.

“If you have been following me on facebook, you will agree that I have always believed in the ability of this team to do well in the Nations Cup.

“Before the match against Cote d’ Ivoire, I told those who cared to listen that the Eagles will win. I knew if only the players can raise their game, they will carry the day and that was what happened,” he stated.

Kanu, however, assured that having gone past the Ivoirians, the Eagles can go all out and defeat Mali in Wednesday’s semi final match and lift the cup in February 10 irrespective of the opposition in the final.

Super Eagles: 23 players, 16 officials

Watching the Super Eagles train at the Olympia Park Stadium, Rustenburg, South Africa, it was difficult to differentiate the players from the officials.

As they all donned the green and white jerseys, it took those of us that were conversant with the players to separate them from the officials.

After our count, while 23 players were registered for the competition, with the exception of Ahmed Musa, who was ill, the officials including the technical crew were 16 in number, a figure most people saw as outrageous.

The question on the lips of every one watching was what the functions of these officials are? Apart from the four coaches, Media Officer, Doctors, psychologist, and curator, the presence of other officials are subject to scrutiny.

Igbos ‘living like kings’ in Rustenburg

Some Nigerian journalist had discovered a restaurant where Nigerian dishes were served.

The place known as Nnoma Restaurant had formed a meeting point for Nigerians in Rustenburg.

Some Nigerians that besieged the restaurant, obviously from the Eastern part of Nigeria on our first visit came in flashy cars. The aura around them suggests that they were living comfortably. But a visit to the home of one of them simply referred to Bakasi was a confirmation of our insinuations.

He revealed to us how successful Nigerians have been, so much so that South African gets jealous of them. “They hate us here because of how successful we are, they accuse us of dealing on drugs,” Bakasi said.

Smoking among South African females a ‘routine’

Smoking among the women folks in various cities visited in South Africa is like a normal thing. In the land of Mandiba, we saw lots of women smoke but the striking one was seeing a woman as old as “my mum” smoking.

At a point we had approached a woman and tried to educate her on the dangers of smoking. She feigned ignorance of the inherent dangers associated with the act. “Is it true that smoking is dangerous to the health?” She asked ignorantly to our greatest amazement.

    Smooth roads all the way

Travelling from one city to another in South Africa is fun. I have always thought I hated travelling by road until I got here. The smoothness of the roads is a sight you’ll always want to behold.

Trips that took hours were just like a stone throw. Little wonder rickety cars were nowhere to be found. Accidents are usually not common on their roads. It was wide enough to accommodate vehicles. I wonder which construction company built these roads. Definitely not some mushroom construction companies we have in Nigeria.

Ideye vows to justify AFCON place

Dynamo Kiev striker, Brown Ideye, has vowed to replicate his club form for Super Eagles at the African Cup of Nations to justify his selection.

Ideye, 24, has scored 13 goals for Dynamo Kiev this season, but has struggled to be as prolific with Nigeria since he made his full international debut three years ago.

He represented Nigeria at U-20 level and was a late replacement for injured Mikel Obi on the final squad to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

However, he did not get any minute of game time during the tournament.

The former Sochaux striker said he will raise his game with the Eagles to justify his inclusion on the final AFCON squad.

“I’m happy to be named in Eagles final team,” Ideye told MTNFootball.com

“It’s great to be in South Africa with Nigeria. That was my target at the early stage of the qualifiers, and all I have to do now is to do well in South Africa to justify my inclusion in the team.

“I will have to work harder to be in the starting line-up and prove my worth. I want to get goals for Nigeria as I have been doing at my club.

“There are a lot of striking options for the coach, but I will definitely prove myself when called upon.”

UEFA Champions League: Ideye makes Top 10 Players to Watch

Nigeria’s Brown Ideye has been listed among top ten players to watch in the UEFA Champions League despite failing to add to his 11 goals haul for Dynamo Kiev in their 4-1 defeat by PSG in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League tie at Parc des Princes.

According to renowned online sports website, bleacherreport.com, the Nigeria international has now gone three successive games at PSG’s Paris home ground without a goal despite his high scoring credentials since the start of current campaign.

“Ideye Brown’s vertical jump would be well above average because he has a habit of outleaping defenders, who are several inches taller than him.

“He’s a shorter version of Mario Mandžukic in that Brown is more efficient at heading the ball than shooting it.

“This season, 45 percent of his goals have come from headers. Last season, Mandžukic netted 66.7 percent of his club goals from headers.

“Brown was impressive in UEFA Champions League qualification games against solid competition like Feyenoord and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“However, he didn’t translate his good form against Paris Saint-Germain, where he ran aimlessly for most of the game,” the report read in part.

Meanwhile, Ideye has admitted that Dynamo Kiev played below par in the 4-1 loss in Paris.

Speaking with UEFA official website, the former Ocean Boys and Sochaux ace maintained that the French side were not superior during the encounter.

“I don’t think PSG were too strong for us. They’re a good team, but we played very badly and when you play badly you lose. The penalty we conceded for the first goal was a problem. After that we lost concentration. I’m used to playing on my own in attack, so I’m not going to complain about that. Sometimes I have a lot of the ball and sometimes I don’t. The most important thing is to make the most of the opportunities I get.”
