  • Lalong: Plateau consensus choice for peace

When the pressure persisted, Governor Simon Bako Lalong succumbed.  He said on his declaration, “I am yielding to pressure to declare to re-contest Governorship election in Plateau State.  I know several groups have endorsed me, some have printed posters as a sign of their support…”
One most interesting of the several definitions of Politics is that which defines politics as a process whereby groups of people make collective decisions.  This description is clearly manifested on the Plateau in the build up to the much anticipated 2019 Governorship election in the State.
Plateau Elders and Stakeholders, Party leaders, Youths/Women groups and indeed plateau citizens as a whole had persistently pressurized the incumbent Governor, Simon Bako Lalong into submission to re-contest the forthcoming Governorship election for another term in office.  The voice of the people is the voice of God.  The people attested to lalong’s developmental strides, and are convinced that his credible leadership has delivered democratic dividends to the people.
The APC Party Chairman in the State, Mr. Laptep Dabang, in Jos today on Redeem 93.7 FM radio station anchored by Samson Omale reiterated the collective decision of Party stakeholders at a recent forum at Yelwa Club in Bukuru, the endorsement of the hard working Governor Simon Lalong to re-contest the 2019 Governorship election as a consensus candidate.
The plethora of calls that flooded the station during the programme shows plateau citizens are seemingly in tandem with the collective decision of the Party and affirmed their support for another mandate for Governor Lalong to complement, coordinate and complete what they referred to as the “Plateau Progress Agenda” which he initiated.
For Governor Lalong, his vision for governance is to make the less privileged; to make the people that elected him to be happy.  The amiable Governor is aware that Plateau people expected true governance and quality representation.  These expectations became the driving force.
It fortified his unflinching resolve to lead in honesty and truth, and to provide basic things of life such as roads, hospitals, education and develop the human capital.  Most important of all is to bequeath a legacy of politically united, socially integrated, peaceful and potentially prosperous people on the plateau. These are embedded in his carefully articulated 5-point agenda which he committed to implement for the common good.
In 2015, Gov. Lalong came to the office well prepared.  He brought to bear his intellectual ability, mental capacity, patriotic zeal and above all, the political will of implementing the far-reaching 5-point agenda.  He is convinced, and rightly so too, that these policies will in the long run ensure unity and equitability as expected by the plural nature of the state for the continual sustenance of peaceful coexistence amongst the people.
Engaging a monumental shift from the past, Lalong adopted an open-door policy.  He gave a listening ear to all shades of opinion and interest irrespective of ethnic, political or religious affiliation.  Furthermore, Lalong carries the management team along in decision making as it affect policy implementation or monetary decision to enhance accountability.
Sustainable peace has been the fulcrum of Lalong’s government.  Peace is the only panacea for peaceful coexistence; and peaceful coexistence is sine qua non for sustainable development in any state.  Gov. Lalong believes that a society where religion bigotry and ethnicity are the order of the day cannot witness socio-economic progress and prosperity.  He upholds unity as an indispensible ingredient for sustainable development.
Gov. Lalong began with a genuine effort towards a proactive, enduring and sustainable peace in the state.  He created the model Plateau Peace Building Agency and developed a Roadmap to sustainable peace in the State.  It was a deliberate choice aimed at enthroning peaceful coexistence.
And in spite of some unfortunate incidence of insecurity in some areas which are believed to be politically instigated, the people still acknowledged and appreciated that the Governor institutionalized peace building and reconciliation through the establishment of the Peace Building Agency.  They praised him for sustained security in the state where many innocent lives had perished before his assumption in office.
Gov. Lalong’s style of administration is very unique and legendary.  His astute leadership in striving for financial transparency, accountability and inclusive governance is admirable.  Lalong adopted prudent management of available resources and despite the dwindling inflows that accrue to the state, he ensured funds are judiciously channeled towards priority projects that have direct bearing on the people.
Plateau is within the bracket of States with low federal government allocation but Lalong’s prudent financial management capacity became a mitigant. He maintained regular payment of salaries and pension and cleared all outstanding arrears of workers and pensioners in the state.  Civil servant nick-named him the “alert” Governor because of the prompt and consistent payment alerts they received on their phones.
Gov. Lalong’s achievements are numerous and are scattered across all key sectors of the state’s economy.  He deviated from what hitherto seems to be the established norms in Nigerian politics, to completing ongoing projects bequeathed to him by his predecessor.  Many road infrastructures in this category were already commissioned, including the State Secretariat flyover bridge, and the Mararaba Jema – Secretariat junction road, and several others across the state.
Reports indicated also that Gov. Lalong has lived up to his campaign promises and has performed even far beyond the expectations of many who did not give him a chance because of the seeming insurmountable challenges.

Take the education sector where he accorded topmost priority.  He funded and resuscitated the hitherto abandoned Plateau State University and brought it back to life with state-of-art e-library, science laboratory, road networks, students’ hostel accommodations etc.  Many courses were accredited and several lecturers sponsored abroad for doctorate degrees.  Same apply to state owned primary and secondary schools where massive infrastructures are being put in place.
On Human Capital Development, the Governor initiated several reforms in the civil service and settled promotion arrears and salaries accruing to staff to boost Morales.  The Tourist sector is also being revamped and revitalized under Public Private Partnership with some foreign interests.  Agriculture, Health, Commerce and Industry need not be over emphasized as evidence of growth in these sectors is glaring for all to see.
Governor Lalong’s antecedents and performances litters all over the state. His sincere and effective leadership in financial prudency, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance has earned him a lot of accolades, numerous awards and recognition by local and international bodies and organizations.  His managerial skills were attributed to his wealth of experience garnered over the years.
Gov. Lalong’s all inclusive governance style is a trait that has gone a long way in strengthening mutual relationship among the diverse ethnic groups in the state and endeared him to the people.  Today in the state, the entire citizenry including the Berom, Anaguta, Goemai, Angas, Yoruba, Hausa, Idoma, Igbo, etc, are full of praises to Lalong for his exemplary leadership qualities which have further bridged the gap of unity in the hitherto troubled state.
That explained why many groups in the State are insisting that Lalong second term bid is vital.  Women and youth groups across the 17 LGAs had matched in solidarity to the Governor to assure him of their unalloyed support for continuity.
For the “VOLA” 2019 Groups, there is no alternative to Gov. Simon Bako Lalong come 2019.  Gathered in Kanam LGA recently, they said, “We know that our Governor has integrity, he has wisdom and above all, he can be trusted with our collective destiny.  He is a man of peace who has suddenly become a rallying point for the suppressed and oppressed.  We say, TO VOTE LALONG AGAIN IN 2019 IS A TASK THAT MUST BE DONE”

    Governor’s aides join Adeyeye’s campaign

Some loyalists of Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose have moved to the camp of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant, Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

Among those who dumped the governor are: former Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr. Deji Adesua; former factional House of Assembly Speaker, Dele Olugbemi; and a Special Assistant, Alhaji Musa Kanga.

They were among thousands of supporters, who welcomed Adeyeye yesterday to his campaign office on Ikere Road, and staged a road show for him.

Kanga led scores of fellow Hausa PDP members in the state, pledging their loyalty and support for Adeyeye’s governorship ambition.

Other ethnic nationalities that identified with the aspirant are: the Urhobo, the Idoma and the Igbo.

Addressing reporters after meeting his supporters, Adeyeye said many prominent party members holding government and party posts would soon join him ahead of the primary.

The aspirant described the September 6 adoption of Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola as “a huge joke and comedy staged to entertain the people of Ekiti State”.

The PDP National Caretaker Committee Publicity Secretary described Olusola’s adoption, which was masterminded by Fayose, as an “irresponsible impunity that has no force of the law”.

He expressed confidence that the national leadership of the party will conduct a free, fair, transparent and credible primary to produce PDP’s flag bearer for the 2018 poll.

Adeyeye said: “What happened last week at the Government House was a huge joke and an alawada (comedy) in which somebody just decided to entertain the people.

“That was an irresponsible step to take. This is because if you are a leader, you should be the first person to obey the law and not the first person to break the law. You should not do something that will break the party.”

Benue massacre: Stop herdsmen before they wipe out our people, Idoma beg Buhari

Following last week’s massacre of over 300 indigenes of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected Fulani Herdsmen, indigenes of the affected areas in Benin, Edo State, yesterday called on the Federal Government to urgently deploy a detachment of soldiers to the affected communities to end the carnage.

Dr Enoch Malachi, an indigene of the affected Local Government and medical practitioner who addressed the press, said the Idoma community in Edo State has dispatched a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on the urgent need to deploy soldiers to the affected areas.

The affected communities are Okokolo, Akwu, Ocholonya, Adagbo, Ugboku and Aila where the invading herdsmen destroyed property and farmland produce worth several millions of naira.

Dr Malachi noted that it was necessary to write the letter to the president to put an end to the unwanted killings by the herdsmen. “Government must take drastic action to end what I may describe as the senseless and wanton killings by Fulani herdsmen.”

He rued the fact that the spate of attacks has forced thousands of families to flee the communities for other Local Government Areas for safety resulting in a serious refugee and humanitarian crisis.

“The Federal Government must take drastic action now in order to bring peace to Agatu Local Government Area. I don’t know why Fulani herdsmen have become militants. Our people are peace loving and we have accommodated the herdsmen for years, and today, they have turned against us.

“The information reaching us now is that three villages have been completely razed down by these herdsmen. The inhabitants have been turned refugees and displaced. Soldiers are not anywhere there to protect the people.

“We are calling on the Federal Government to immediately deploy a battalion of soldiers to these communities; if not, our people may be completely wiped out by these well-armed herdsmen.”

  • Mark to Benue South: I won’t fail you

Mark to Benue South: I won’t fail you

Former President of the Senate Senator David Mark has asked his Benue South constituents of Benue State to be steadfast just as he promised not to disappoint them no matter the circumstances.

Senator Mark told the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Women group who visited him at his Abuja residence Tuesday ahead of the forthcoming rerun election that he is irrevocably committed to the development of Idoma land and Nigeria at large.

He said the Appeal Court Tribunal which annulled his election was a surprise but he respects the sanctity of the rule of law and would do all within the ambits of the law to reclaim his mandate.

Senator Mark said he is encouraged by the plethora of solidarity visits to him since the annulment which he believed”is a clear testimony that  my people truly desires my services.”

” I am encouraged by your visit and support far. I can assure you that I will always do my best to promote development, peace and unity of our people. Whatever  I can do to make our society a better place, I will not hesitate to do that,”  Senator Mark stated.

On the forthcoming rerun, the former Senate President urged the people to remain focused and unperturbed in spite of unwarranted provocation, pointing out that only the Idoma people would vote to determine who should represent them at the National Assembly without external interference.

Earlier, the leader of the PDP women in Benue state Mrs. Abeje Egwa pleaded with Senator Mark not to abandon the ship because a lot of people rely on him for Socio political direction.

Mrs. Egwa pointedly told Mark not to be discouraged by the litany of betrayals and blackmailers in the polity, saying “those who are with you are far more than the few that are opposed to you.”

He stated: “We have decided to stay with you and vote for you like we did before. We are prepared to defend the mandate we gave you in the first instance. Any time, any day, we shall vote for you.

“We are comfortable with your leadership and representation. We have no reason to shift the goal post, because we believe that our people have more to gain in your leadership.”

  • Idoma, Tiv politicians jostle to succeed Suswam

Idoma, Tiv politicians jostle to succeed Suswam

Today, the issue in political discussions in Benue State is where power should shift to in 2015. The choice of successor to Governor Gabriel Suswam is already threatening to heat up the polity. UJA EMMANUEL reports the issues, actors and intrigues.

Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State has 30 months more to pilot the affairs of the state. Turbulent most of the time, but the ship of his administration is expected to stay on course till May 29, 2015.

Ordinarily, this period is supposed to be devoted to governance and not politicking; but this is not so in the state. Fierce battle to succeed Suswam has begun in earnest, even with interesting dimensions. The people of Benue South senatorial zone, otherwise known as Zone C, are already working on all cylinders in the hope of securing the opportunity to steer the ship of governance in the state after. They are not comfortable that they have not governed the state since its creation from the old Benue – Plateau State more than 35 years back.

The senatorial zone has nine local government councils seven are predominantly of Idoma ethnic group while the other group, the Igede is spread across the two local government areas that constitute Zone C.

However, while the Idoma are tucked in one senatorial zone with seven councils, their Tiv brothers are spread in two senatorial zones (A and B) with 14 local government councils with an overwhelming population.

The closest opportunity that came the way of Benue South to become governor of the state was in 2007 when Mike Onoja came second in the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) governorship primaries against Suswam. Since that opportunity eluded them, they have been struggling to no avail.

Now, as 2015 approaches for another round of elections, apostles of power shift to Benue South have stepped up their campaigns. Recently, the deputy governor of the state, Chief Steven Lawani, played host to a group led by former three-time member of the House of Representatives representing Ado\Okpokwu\Ogbadigbo, Hon Dave Idoko at the Government House, Makurdi.

The group, known as Apa 9, comprises past political appointees from the nine local government areas of Benue South. Their main agenda is for the zone to produce the next governor.

Apart from Idoko, other members include Hon George Ali, Hon Sunday Orinya, Hon. Joseph Odaudu and some other prominent sons of the zone.

Speaking with The Nation shortly after the group held a closed-door meeting with the deputy governor, Idoko maintained that Apa 9 is primarily concerned with ensuring power shift to Benue South in 2015 and/or the creation of Apa State.

“There are two things that are at the front burner in Benue politics today. The people of Zone C want to produce the next governor of the state or in the alternative, the creation of Apa State, and we came here to dialogue with the deputy governor and have his blessing,” said Idoko.

He said further that the group was working with every man and woman for the realisation of the ambition of the Benue South people.

He spoke further: “We want our Tiv brothers also to see reason and allow power shift to Zone C because President Goodluck Jonathan and Kaduna State governor are from minority groups, yet they are leaders today. So, there is nothing wrong with an Idoma man from Benue South becoming the governor of the state in 2015.”The big question now is: Will Tiv ethnic group with two senatorial zones allow the people of Benue South produce the next governor for the first time since the creation of Benue from Plateau?

Already, apart from agitating for power to shift to the MINDA axis (a group among the Tivs), there is another group, Tiv Federation Quota (TFQ) led by Chief Jeo Har and Kelvin Acka, which have accused Idomas of manipulating federal appointment and recruitment of people into military and para-military organisations in their own favour.

At a recent press parley held in Makurdi, the spokesman of the group, Chief Har called on the federal government to halt the trend just as he asked the government to investigate the lopsided recruitment exercise into the military, where Tiv people’s names were substituted for Idomas’.

The group expressed concern that their Idoma brothers were crying of marginalization, but in the real sense, according to it, they are the ones marginalizing other ethnic groups in the state as seen by the recent recruitments into the Police, Navy, Army and Civil Defence, which were skewed in favour of the Idomas against Tiv and Igede people.

The group further wondered: “If they were not yet in power and were able to manipulate federal appointments and recruitment exercises, what would become of the rest tribes if they produce the governor of the state?”

There is fear among the major ethnic groups about power shift. While Benue South cries foul that since the creation of the state, they have not occupied the Government House in Makurdi, the Tivs are worried that only Idomas are being recruited into the military and federal positions from the state.

Already, the Tiv group called MINDA, which is spread across Makurdi, Gwer, Gwer West and Guma local government areas, has maintained it is Tiv’s turn to produce the next governor of Benue state.

The group said all the Tiv ruling houses of Kwande, Jechira, Jemgba and Sankera had occupied the Government House, lamenting that the only group remaining is MINDA, which should be allowed to have its turn in 2015.

From MINDA axis so far, some people have indicated their intention to run for the post. They are: Hon John Tondu, Commissioner for Lands and Survey and Dr. Tivlumun Nyitse, Permanent Secretary, Government House Administration.

Also, prominent persons from MINDA who are under intense pressure to contest the 2015 governorship race are Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Chief Samuel Ortom and Prince Simon Aondona.

The people of Benue South may not achieve the much-sought power shift on a platter of gold as their Tiv brothers appear not done yet. But as Idoko, the leader of Apa 9 said: “If we can’t shift power to Zone C, we can at least have Apa State created. But how things would turn out in 2015, depends on circumstances and development within the period.
