The Foreign Affairs Ministry has attracted investments worth $17.212 billion, €250 million and £100 million in the first year of the Bola Tinubu Administration

This is according to the minister, Yusuf Tuggar, who spoke at the ongoing sectorial briefing to mark the first anniversary.

He blamed the delay in appointing ambassadors on the current economic crunch.

On the investment facilitated by the ministry, Tuggar the €250 million came from the Netherlands.

The $14 billion worth of investment commitments from Indian investors cut across ICT, power, steel/manufacturing, agriculture, defence, telecom, space communications, digital solutions, insurance, processed foods, real estate, and hospitality.

Others are the financing agreement of £100 million on the Digital and Creative Enterprises Programme (I-DICE) and the signing of MOUs worth $ 600 million between Nigeria and France.

The pacts are aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in digital technology and creative industries.

Others are: “A $ 2 billion investment from Germany on the Nigeria-Siemens Power Project; and a $ 500 million MOU to export LNG to Germany between Nigeria Riverside LNG and Germany’s Johannes Schuetze Energy Import AG.”

The minister said: “Under the accord, it is agreed that Nigeria is to supply 850,000 tonnes of natural gas to Germany annually which is expected to rise to 1.2 million by 2026

“The U.S. committed to contributing at least $12 million to Nigerian efforts to increase the transparency of public monetary management and civil society efforts to increase government transparency.”

Tuggar said the ministry signed seven Memoranda of Understanding with Qatar to foster knowledge exchange, combat illicit trade, promote youth development, and ensure fair employment practices.

The ministry, he said, secured the repatriation of some stolen funds from the U.S., to be utilised for public sector investment through the African Development Bank.

Also yesterday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said President Bola Tinubu is building a safer, stronger and prosperous Nigeria.

Idris noted that despite the various challenges, the president has embarked on a transformative journey towards stability, prosperity, and security, guided by the 8-Point Renewed Hope Agenda.

This milestone is detailed in the Ministry of Information and National Orientation’s report titled “One Year of the Tinubu Administration – Building a Safer, Stronger, and Prosperous Nigeria.”

The report highlights the significant strides made under President Tinubu’s leadership to tackle critical national challenges and implement comprehensive policies aimed at fostering national growth and development.

The minister said: “Amidst economic challenges marked by turmoil and unemployment, the administration’s bold economic reforms have stabilised the economy and sparked growth.

“A significant move was the removal of the unsustainable fuel subsidy, redirecting approximately $10 billion annually towards critical sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security.

“This action alone led to a 50 per cent reduction in petrol importation and increased state and local government revenues.

“The elimination of the foreign exchange subsidy and the harmonisation of FOREX rates bolstered the Nigerian economy, resulting in the Nigerian Stock Exchange becoming the top-performing bourse globally and strengthening the Naira.”

The minister highlighted the wage award, battle against insecurity, agriculture and food security, infrastructure development and healthcare as other areas the administration has made significant strides in.

He said the president said is working towards making life better for the people of Nigeria.

He said: “We use this opportunity to launch the Nigerian National Information Portal. Of course, it was in existence before but it has been so badly managed that the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation has resuscitated this new portal.

World Press Freedom Day: No compromise on press freedom, FG Assures the media

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Friday, May 3, gave the assurance that the federal government will not compromise press freedom.

Idris also affirmed that no single journalist has been incarcerated under the Tinubu administration for practising responsible journalism, stressing that the media is largely free in Nigeria.

He, however, said spreading falsehood and misinformation is irresponsible journalism and cannot be equated with press freedom.

The minister spoke in Abuja at a press briefing organised by his ministry in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management, and the United Nations Educational and Scientific Organisation (UNESCO), to commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

He briefed alongside the Minister of State for Environment and Ecological Management, Dr. Iziaq Salako; Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Dr. Ngozi Onwudiwe; Head UNESCO Office Abuja, Mr. Abdourahamane Diallo.

He said: “I have not seen somebody in the life of this administration, for example, who has been put in jail or who has gone into exile as a result of press freedom.

“We knew what has happened in this country in the past. Some decades ago, we know that you have to leave this country to be able to report. I can tell you that the press in Nigeria is largely free but that freedom will further be consolidated if honesty and transparency are upheld in the manner that we report.

The Minister said the President recognizes the importance of responsible media coverage in enlightening, informing, and educating Nigerians and the world, adding that through credible and timely information, everyone can be well-informed, and the media can serve as a valuable tool for fostering transparency and accountability.

“As a Ministry and government, we provided the most unfettered access to Journalists and provided the enabling environment that has continued to encourage the Nigerian media to grow in leaps and bounds,” he said.

He said as President Tinubu strives to position Nigeria as an attractive destination for Foreign Direct Investment, the media must present a positive and accurate portrayal of the country to the international community.

While speaking on this year’s theme of World Press Freedom Day, ‘’A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of Environmental Crisis,” Idris said the world is confronted by an environmental crisis of unprecedented magnitude, one that poses a threat not only to the planet but to the very future of humanity.

He said climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and resource depletion are not abstract concepts but harsh realities that demand immediate and decisive action toward public mobilization and sensitization.

“It is our conviction, that Press freedom is not just a fundamental human right; it is also essential for environmental sustainability. Without a free and independent press, we cannot hope to address the complex environmental challenges we face.

“Disinformation and misinformation undermine public understanding of environmental issues and hinder our ability to take meaningful action. Therefore, we must staunchly defend press freedom and support the work of journalists who are dedicated to reporting the truth,” he said.

On his part, the Minister of Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, said what is needed now in the face of intense environmental challenges is a press for the Planet.

Salako, however, said that the government is promoting nature-based solutions in battling climate change and other environmental challenges through tree planting, mangrove restoration, urban greening, and restoring wetlands.

He said: “A press for the planet at this point in time is, therefore, most needed if we are to get the public behind  global and national agenda like net zero, energy transition, biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, 30 by 30, ending plastic pollution and such other pathways set forth to address the environmental crisis

“At the forefront of our efforts to combat the environmental crisis in our country are Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), our Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy, our commitment to achieving net zero emissions, and our framework for biodiversity conservation.

“These commitments outline our path towards sustainability, emphasizing the need for collaborative action, innovation, and accountability.

“They represent the unwavering dedication of Nigeria to play her part in mitigating climate change and safeguarding the health of our planet for future generations.

“In this regard, the Federal Ministry of Environment is promoting nature-based solutions through tree planting, mangrove restoration, urban greening, and restoring wetlands.  We are promoting the adoption of more environmentally friendly energy sources including clean cookstoves, working hard to end gas-flaring and plastic pollution, remediating oil-polluted communities, expanding our protected areas, and addressing desertification, drought, flooding, and erosion.

“In doing this, we are fully in tune with the inclusivity agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which is a key pillar in the eight-point presidential priority. Recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic issues, we understand that sustainable development cannot be achieved without addressing the needs of all members of society. By promoting inclusivity, we ensure that no one is left behind in our journey towards a greener, more prosperous Nigeria.

He further stressed that “Environmental degradation exacerbates resource scarcity, heightens social tensions, and undermines stability.

“By addressing environmental degradation which promotes unhealthy competition for scarce resources, we can create not just a more resilient society, we will in fact be cutting off a vital driver of the insecurity currently being faced in our country.

As we commemorate World Press Freedom Day, I call on us to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of a free and independent press, a sine qua non for effective climate journalism.

“Press freedom is indispensable to promote transparency, accountability, and social justice, critical to communicating the threat posed by the climate crisis and making informed decisions to be more environmentally responsible. You as journalists have a critical role to play in driving environmental policy formulation and implementation and also in shaping public perception about the crisis.

“Let us therefore work together, across sectors and borders, to harness the power of media in addressing the environmental crisis and advancing sustainable development.

Journalism plays a pivotal role in advancing environmental agendas, catalyzing change, a watchdog for accountability, and being a voice for the voiceless. Through investigative reporting, insightful analysis, and compelling storytelling, journalists shed light on the pressing issues of the environmental crisis facing our nation and inspire mass action towards positive change. Without such mass actions, we will be unable to win the fight against the environmental challenges confronting our country.

‘Ignorance, lack of awareness and appropriate knowledge about the climate crisis is still rampant in our society.

“Let me therefore in closing call upon you our dear friends in the media for more support in our drive for environmental advocacy and citizenship so that all creatures on earth thrive in harmony with the planet. We know that our behaviour and lifestyles are driving environmental crisis.

“We also know that changing behaviour and lifestyle is not easy to achieve. Therefore, we must remain persistent in our advocacy, our awareness creation, our sensitization, and education of the public.

“The doomsday clock is ticking, bringing humanity closer and closer to a “triple whammy” which may ultimately seal all our fate but if we work together, if the freedom of the press is promoted, if our journalists come fully on board deploying their reports as climate actions we will save our cherished planet earth for ourselves and generations to come.”

Onanuga on his part warned that the rainforest is gradually disappearing as there is no preservation of the country’s ecology.

He stressed the need for more involvement of the media in the issue of the Environment.

The presidential aide therefore charged journalists to spare time to report the environment.

FG taking steps to ameliorate rising cost of staple foods – Idris

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, says the Federal Government is aware of the rising cost of staple foods in the markets.

He disclosed this during the 2024 conference and annual general meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Niger State chapter in Minna on Tuesday.

The theme of the conference was “Public Relations in a Challenging Environment: The role of stakeholders and communication in a new Niger agenda.

Idris, who was represented by Malam Jibrin Ndace, Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), said practical steps were being taken to ameliorate the situation.

He said the President had directed the NSA, DSS and IGP to coordinate with state governors to check activities of those hoarding food commodities to ensure price control.

“On behalf of the Federal Government, I applaud the effort of the Niger State Gov. Umaru Bago, for his timely decision to halt bulk-buying of food items for hoarding.

“This no doubt helped in the recent reduction of the cost of food items in the state,” he said.

  • We’ll encourage responsible journalism not gag press – Idris

We’ll encourage responsible journalism not gag press – Idris

President Bola Tinubu will continue to encourage the practice of responsible journalism and not gag the press in the country.

Malam Muhammad Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja while briefing State House Correspondents.

He said that a free and vibrant media practice and social media was significant to the success of the administration and the promotion of nationalism and patriotism.

‘’Mr President and all of us in that sector are committed to ensuring that there’s press freedom. That freedom, like I said, comes with responsibility. A lot of things that some of these people on social media are doing are also not very patriotic.

‘’Sometimes you say news that is not factual. But I don’t want a situation where it will be seen that the government is trying to gag the press. I want that to be underscored.

‘’There is no attempt by the government to gag the press. We’re going to do whatever it takes that is responsible and also accountable. Responsible journalism is the way to go.

‘’The president values the freedom of the press and will continue to engage it at all times,’’ he said.

The minister said that the administration would engage in national reorientation of citizens in order to achieve its objectives of value reorientation and inclusiveness.

‘’Mr President has given me a matching order to see that Nigerians believe in this country once again. We’re coming up with national discourse on orientation or reorientation. So that Nigerians can believe in their country.

‘’You know that people don’t even believe in leaders that they elected. Flags are not flying anymore. You go to government offices overseas, you don’t even see the symbol of our collective existence, flying even in public buildings.

On the welfare of the media practitioners in the country, Idris said that there are on-going consultations on improving the standard of living of journalists, adding that the president has been supportive in this direction.

Idris said, ‘’It is in the works. I have discussed that with Mr President. He wants to see me come up with a roadmap for that. We are going to work on that and in due course you will get definite answers.

‘’The welfare of journalists will continue to be on the front burner because we believe in the freedom of the press and anything that will promote this freedom will be given priority.’’

Idris said that the government would also take a look at suggestions to sanitise the press in the country without encumbering them in any way.

He added, ‘’Well, that is being looked at. You know that Mr President believes in press freedom. He believes in the freedom of expression, and he’s not going to gag the press in any way, shape or form.

‘’He is going to work assiduously to ensure that the Nigerian press that has been free is even freer.

‘’But like I have been saying all the time, this freedom also comes with enormous responsibility.

‘’You can’t just say what is not right, because you’re enjoying press freedom.’’

  • Idris kicks against Senate’s confirmation for IG

INSPECTOR-General (IG) Ibrahim Idris yesterday disagreed with the plan of the Senate to adopt a Bill to make it mandatory for the upper chamber to screen and confirm the appointment of a prospective IG.

The police boss also kicked against sections of the proposed Bill, which empower the Senate to remove the IG from office whenever the upper chamber considered it necessary.

Idris was emphatic that the Police Act must not be amended in such a way to politicise the Force.

The IG spoke at a public hearing on “A Bill for an Act to repeal the Police Act CAP P19 Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and enact the Police Act, 2018” organised by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs.

The appearance of Idris yesterday at the committee’s sitting was the first time the police boss honoured Senate invitation since his refusal to appear to answer questions over the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye in April, this year.

It is believed that the IG’s submission on the controversial proposed sections will go a long way in forming the opinion of members of the committee.

The Senate Committee also proposed the pruning down of the number of Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) from seven to one.

On the pruning down of the number of DIGs, Idris said there was no doubt that such amendment would increase the work load of the IGP.

Observers said the Senate should rather find ways and means to make the duties of the IG less cumbersome for effectiveness.

The police boss insisted that creation of the position of only one DIG would put too much pressure on the IGP.

Idris said: “You can’t police a people without their consent. The provisions of the Bill are in consonance with the contents of the Criminal Justice System.

“The confirmation and removal of the IG by the Senate is not necessary.

“It will politicise the Police Force. It should be expunged from the Bill. The tenure of the IG of five years should be maintained.

“The appointment of the IG in consultation with the Police Service Commission is appropriate.

“There should not be any confirmation by the Senate. This is the desire and position of the Police Force.

“There should not be one DIG. There should be seven as we have already. Having one will put too much pressure on the IG. It reduces the workload.”

Chairman, Police Service Commission Musiliu Smith, in his observation, told the committee that the rot in the Police has degenerated to a level where criminals and drug barons now gift houses to policemen.

The former IG opposed the proposal to expunge “Force” and retain only “Nigeria Police”, saying it should be done in line with the provisions of the constitution.

Smith said, “I have few observations. One is the name from Nigeria Police Force to Nigeria Police. If the name has to be changed, it has to be done constitutionally.

“We met a police when all the training schools were working. We met a police where you could not be promoted without writing an examination.

“We met a police where every policeman lived in the barracks. Some policemen are given houses by criminals and hard drug bandits. That needs to change. We should think of additional funding sources for the police.

“In Lagos State, a governor came into office. He didn’t like what he met on ground. He invited some of us to change what was on ground. That was what gave birth to Lagos State Police Trust Fund.

“We can’t tackle insecurity without this. Let us think of that. The annual yearly budget ritual can’t help. It will not take us anywhere. If you want a highly motivated Police Force, we should adequately fund it.”

  • Idris mourns Coomassie

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotun-Idris, has described the death of one of his predecessors, Ibrahim Coomassie, as a monumental and irreparable loss to the country.

He said the country, Nigeria Police Force and indeed Katsina State where he hailed from, will miss his wise counsel and wealth of experience as a retired experienced Senior Police Officer.

Idris described the former IGP as “a godly man, who has the interest of all Nigerians, particularly the police officers at heart above any other thing. He was a bridge builder, an amiable personality who is fond of his people and whose vacuum will be difficult to fill.”

  • Police warns Saraki against interfering with investigation

The Police on Wednesday expressed shock over the allegation by the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris  is plotting against him.

The Police said the claim was an attempt to divert the Police investigation into the killings of more than 11 innocent people from kwara State and other States of the Federation by the killer squad who operates under the guise of a cult group.

The Police also warned Saraki not to interfere with investigation, noting that attempts to do so is an offence.

The Police while justifying  its transferring of  the cases,  highlighted some cases that were transferred from State commands to the Force headquarters.

It also explained that the transfer was in accordance with Police investigation procedures, adding that the IGP had no vested interest in the case.

The Police stated its position in a statement on the matter in Abuja on Wednesday by the Force Spokesman, ACP Jimoh Moshood.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to Press Statement credited to the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki  of “Plot against him by IGP”.

“The Nigeria Police Force is shocked at the unbelievable claims, unverifiable allegations and unfounded accusations being peddled against the IGP by the Senate President, accusing the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris of plot and strategies against him to settle scores.

“The Force therefore wishes to categorically state that, there is no iota of truth in the allegation and false assertion by the Senate President of plot against him by the IGP to implicate the Kwara State Government and the Senate President in any criminal matter.

“Until investigation is concluded, any person (s) or group(s) who tries to interfere in the investigation process by action or utterances is committing an offence.”

    Giving more insight about the suspects mentioned by the Senate President, the police said:  “To set the records straight, the Kwara State Police Command on the 11th of May, 2018, paraded the following suspects before the Media and the Public, namely;

Abolaji Safti Ojulari of Kankatu area, Ilorin,  Lanre  Mohammed Soliu a.k.a Askari of Ile Nda Compound, Ilorin, Azeez Moyaki of Moyaki Compound, Gambari Area Ilorin,  Suleiman Babatunde of Gambari Area, Ilorin,  Yusuf Habeeb of Kangile Village, Kulende, Ilorin and Umar Yahaya of Kangile Village, Kulende,  Ilorin.

“The suspects admitted and confessed before the press and the public to have killed 11 innocent persons in kwara State and other States of the country.”

The Police said the suspects confessed to have killed their targets on the instructions of their sponsors.

Names of some of the victims who were killed in cold blood according to the Police are; “Bukola Ajikobi killed on 18/01/2016 at ajikobi Area in Ilorin,  Azeez Lawal killed in February, 2018 at Oja oba area of Ilorin,  Lateef (Surname unknown) killed February, 2018 at Ode Alfa Nda area of Ilorin,  Jamiu (Surname unknown) killed in February 2018 at Idi ape area, Ilorin and One segun (Surname unknown) killed in September, 2017 at kankatu area of Ilorin.

Others are: “Wasiu (Surname unknown) killed in September 29, 2016 at Shao garage of Ilorin,  Musiliu (Surname unknown) killed in February, 2018 at Shao Area Ilorin,  Bayo Ajia killed in January 18, 2018 at taiwo Road, Ilorin, Another Lateef killed in January 2016 at Baboko Area of Ilorin,  Abbey a student of Kwara Polytechnic killed in April, 2017 at Niger Road, Ilorin and Lanre (Surname unknown) killed on 23rd August, 2015 at Isale Aluko Area of Ilorin.”

On why the case was transferred to the Force Headquarters, Moshood said : “Consequent upon the public confessions of these vicious and notorious killer squad to the killings in cold blood of more than 11 innocent people in Kwara State and other States of the Federation, the statutory procedure and practice in the Force is that such a heinous crime and capital offence is transferred to the Force Headquarters for further investigation.

“This is to enable a thorough and discreet investigation into the crime.”

On whether the IG has any special interest in the case,  the statememt stated: “It is pertinent to state that, there is no vested interest by the Inspector General of Police in the ongoing investigation into the several murders committed by this killer gang, other than ensuring that justice prevails in the matter.

“Nobody, no matter how highly placed would be allowed to interfere or obstruct Police investigation to pervert the course of justice.”

On some of the cases transferred to Abuja, Moshood said : “It is also imperative to let the public know that last year, suspects arrested over the mayhem and killings of innocent people in Ile-Ife, Osun State and those arrested in Southern Kaduna crisis in Kaduna State and suspects arrested in connection with Zaki-biam killings in Benue State were all transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja for further investigation before they were arraigned in court of competent jurisdiction.

“Therefore, transferring this hired assassin gang masquerading as cultists in kwara State to Force Headquarters, Abuja for further investigation is in accordance with Police investigation procedures.”

The Police said the statement credited to the Senate President can discourage living victims and deceased families of those who must have been killed by the gang from coming forward to give evidence against them.

The Police urged members of the public to disregard and the claim of plot by the IGP against the Senate President as a ruse, unfortunate and an attempt to divert Police investigation into the killings of more than 11 innocent people.

The Force also said it will leave no stone unturned and will do everything within the ambit of the law to ensure justice in the matter, no matter whose ox is gored.

  • Resolution on Idris a witch-hunt, say Police

INSPECTOR General Ibrahim Idris has described the resolution by the Senate as a blackmail, mischievous and very unfortunate.

Contrary to the claim that the IG refused to honour the third invitation by the Senate without notice, he said a letter was sent yesterday to the Senate President stating why he could not be present.

The police boss said he would not be deterred by blackmail from any individual or group no matter how highly placed.

Idris added that he owes no apology to any individual or groups in his effort to ensure preservation of law and order, supremacy of the law and make sure that Nigerians are subjected to the same law; no matter what their positions are.

A statement in Abuja yesterday by the Force spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, said because the Inspector-General was on official assignments on the dates he was invited, he delegated the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Department of Operations, Assistant Inspector-Generals of Police and some Commissioners of Police conversant with the matter to brief the Senate.

“The delegated officers went with a brief of the Inspector-General of Police on the matter to the Senate to enable the Senate appreciate the issues raised to guide their resolutions on the matter but the Senate refused to listen to the officers delegated by the Inspector-General of Police in line with his powers recognised by both the Constitution and the Police Act and Regulations.

The statement explained: “On May 8, 2018, the Inspector General of Police sent a letter to the Senate President signed by the Commissioner of Police, Legal and Prosecution Department, explaining why he would not be appearing before the Senate on May 9, 2018, due to legal restraint as a result of pending cases before the courts filed: (i) by Senator Dino Melaye against the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja,” which was adjourned to May 31 for hearing.

It added: “The action of the Senate in its resolution against the IGP today is a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting with mischievous motives to hand-twist the IGP to pervert the end of justice in a felonious and serious offences of Criminal Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms for which Senator Dino Melaye, who was indicted by two principal suspects (Kabiru Seidu A.K.A Osama, Nuhu Salisu A.K.A Small) arrested for several cases of kidnappings and armed robberies in Kogi State are already standing trial in a court of competent jurisdiction.

“It is important to correct the impression created in the minds of the people from the Senate’s resolution that the IGP is not and will not be an enemy to democracy. It is also of significant note to state that IGP Ibrahim K. Idris, NPM, mni, has served meritoriously for above 10 years in the United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in several countries unblemished. The Nigeria Police Force is the first defender of democracy and all democratic institutions in Nigeria and will continue to do so.

“It is factual and verifiable that Melaye was discharged and certified fit to stand trial by the National Hospital, Abuja, before he was arraigned in Chief Magistrate Courts in Wuse, Abuja and Lokoja.

“The Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force will not be deterred by blackmail from any individual or group no matter how highly placed from the enforcement of law and order and ensuring that the Rule of Law prevails no matter whose ox is gored.

“The Nigeria Police Force, therefore, owes no apology to any individual or groups in its effort to ensure preservation of law and order, supremacy of the law of the land, and make sure that all Nigerians are subject to the same law, no matter what their position is in the society.

“The public are hereby implored to disregard and discountenance the resolution of the Senate on the IG as a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting and mischievously aimed at casting aspersions on the hard earned integrity of the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force.”
