…as lawmaker distributes educational materials to students

Ifako-Ijaiye has been named one of the most educated local government area of Lagos state by stakeholders in the education sector of Lagos state.

This was as the lawmaker representing Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I at the State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, distributed thousands of school materials to students of the local government as part of his ‘Back To School Support Initiative’.

The event, which took place at Fagba Junior Grammar School, Ifako-Ijaiye, attracted hundreds of schoolchildren, parents, teachers, community leaders, and stakeholders.

Items distributed by the lawmaker included 500 school bags, 6,000 exercise books, 10,000 writing materials, 500 mathematical sets, 1,000 pairs of socks, and 500 water bottles.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Adewale said the gesture, which is the 5th, was aimed at easing the financial burden of parents while motivating pupils to excel in their studies.

Adewale, who distributed GCE and JAMB forms to candidates earlier in the year, said his effort was to complement the unwavering commitment of President Bola Tinubu in the education sector.

“Many people do not understand that service and leadership start from the grassroots. This is one thing that has kept Asiwaju Tinubu formidable over the years. His passion to bring education to children while as governor of Lagos state remains the most effective education strategy in recent times.

“Today, we recognize him as the best President Nigeria has had. This is why I also encourage people to do the little that they can. The education of our children cannot be left to the government and parents alone,” he said.

Adewale said education remains one of his top priorities as a legislator, describing it as the “bedrock of human and societal development.”

  • ICAN inaugurates Ifako-Ijaiye district

    ICAN inaugurates Ifako-Ijaiye district

The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Mr. Davidson Chizueke Alaribe, has reiterated the critical role of accountants in nation-building, urging members to maintain the highest ethical standards in their professional conduct.

Alaribe made this known during the inauguration of the Ifako-Ijaiye and District Society of ICAN and the investiture of its pioneer District Chairman, Mrs. Florence Titidayo Akinsola, held recently at the Academy, Ikeja, Lagos.

Describing the event as part of his “injury-time inaugurations,” with his tenure ending May 31, Alaribe disclosed that Ifako-Ijaiye was among the 26 newly created District Societies under his leadership aimed at decentralizing ICAN’s operations and bringing its impact closer to the grassroots.

“I am elated to see this group of young professionals, led by Florence Akinsola, take up the mantle. I have charged them to be of good conduct, be great ambassadors of ICAN, and reach younger generations with the message of the accounting profession,” he said.

Highlighting the indispensable role of accountants, Alaribe asserted that accountants are “the gatekeepers of any economy.”

When asked about ICAN’s synergy with anti-graft bodies like the EFCC and ICPC, Alaribe encouraged stronger preventive measures through moral reorientation in society.

“EFCC is trying its best, but with over 230 million Nigerians, crime is a social reality. Parents and institutions must teach values. We should stop celebrating unexplained wealth. That is where real change begins,” he advised.

In her words, Mrs. Florence Akinsola, the newly inaugurated Chairman of the Ifako-Ijaiye District, expressed excitement at the realisation of a long-standing dream.

“We have clamoured for this district for a long time, and I am grateful that it happened during my time. It will enable our members to participate more actively in ICAN affairs and contribute their quota to its growth,” she said.

Akinsola unveiled plans to prioritise continuous professional development for members and establish a library-equipped secretariat to support aspiring and practicing accountants in the community.

“We will run ‘Catch Them Young’ initiatives and encourage students in the area to pursue accounting. This library will serve both our members and the community,” she added.

She affirmed that the team’s foundation is built on diversity, expertise, and passion, with a mandate to drive growth and excellence across the district.

“We aim to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity. Our district must become a beacon of excellence in the accounting profession,” she stated.

The Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, Oba Semiudeen Kasali, in his goodwill message, commended ICAN for its role in promoting accountability and transparency in Nigeria’s economy.

“The accounting profession has a critical role in economic development. I urge the new district to uphold the profession’s integrity and ensure members are held accountable,” he said.

Community urges APC on inclusion in appointments, representation

Residents of Ijaiye Housing Estate in Lagos have decried the alleged marginalisation of their community in the All Progressives Congress (APC) political activities in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government.

A petition signed by some of the leaders of the community, explained that the development is causing  members to suffer some level of discomfort and political reputation damage within the community from residents who are becoming disillusioned.

It said: “For a fact, residents of this community have consistently towed and supported the ‘progressive causes’, since its inception.

“It is a well- known fact in Ifako-Ijaiye political circles that the majority of its Ijaiye Housing Estate Community residents have always overwhelmingly voted and supported the electoral aspirations of our great party (APC) and its precursors with progressive ideals in the past years. i.e, Alliance for Democracy (A.D), Action Congress (A.C), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

“At the last General Elections of 2023, our party, the APC, had a good showing in all of the 5 polling booths within the estate.

“This is a consistent feat that has been achieved through the untiring efforts of committed and dedicated leaders and members of the progressive family, who leave no stone unturned to mobilize residents in order to ensure victory for the party each time there is an election circle.

“Our specific grievances are as follows; a) A continuous and deliberate lack of opportunities for key electoral representation (Councillorship position) and political appointments (Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, etc) within the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Council structure.

” Abysmally poor employment and empowerment opportunities for our teeming youths and women at the State and Local Government levels.

“The absence of infrastructural projects for developmental and/or urban renewal purposes within our community. In the light of the aforementioned, this negative impact of the insensitivity of the party’s leadership to our aspirations and desires through a continued marginalization undermines the principles of inclusivity and fairness, which our party preaches.

“This negative trend, if allowed to persist, will threaten the party’s strength, unity of purpose, mobilization efforts and its effectiveness to deliver on future electoral victories within the community.

“At this crucial moment, we collectively and respectfully urge you and the entire leadership to take steps to immediately address these grievances as we approach the forthcoming Local Government elections, so as to ensure that members of the party and the community in Ijaiye Housing Estate have an equal opportunity as we continue to contribute to the party’s growth and future electoral successes by ensuring a review of the party’s zoning processes for elective and appointive positions at the Local Government Council level.

“As loyal members of the All Progressive Congress in Ijaiye Housing Estate. We believe it is pertinent to bring this issue of political and infrastructural marginalization to your attention in order to address these ugly developments and foster a sense of hope and purpose that will promote a positive and tangible change in the scheme of things.”

Upon their return to Ifako-Ijaiye, the participants were equipped to transfer their knowledge to others.

    Ifako-Ijaiye subsidises foodstuff for 10,000

Residents of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area, Lagos, yesterday trooped out in thousands to buy food items at subsidised rates.

They stormed the council secretariat for staple food materials such as rice, beans, yam, groundnut oil, garri and plantain, among others.

Council Chairman Prince Usman Hamzat said the council subsidised the price by 75 per cent to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.

According to him, subsidy removal was not meant to inflict hardship on the populace.

He said: “It is a way of ensuring a good future for our country. There is this saying that it is very painful getting a tribal mark, but when it heals up, it becomes fashionable for you and that’s the way I see it. The way we are being brought or the way our community is or people are, we don’t want to experience pain. For me, fuel subsidy removal is long overdue and the president has actually done the right thing. If we don’t do the right thing, we will keep rotating ourselves in pain which is not the best. I think for me, it is the right step.”

Hamzat said the country’s economy was not doing badly compared to those of some advanced countries. He advised Nigerians to be moderate in their spending and live within their means.

“Someone said something and I think I agree with it. People feel we should have a three-square meal. The three there isn’t even squares, square is four. It isn’t compulsory to eat three times daily; we have been deceiving ourselves all this while. If I am not hungry, why would I say I want to eat lunch, I can eat twice in a day and still be okay. We need to face reality and avoid copying other people’s lifestyles. For instance, I attended public from primary to higher institution but today, many don’t want their children to go to public schools,” he said

He further said the council, every fortnight, distributed food items for free in the neighbourhood.

Secretary to the local government and Chairman of the Palliative Committee Kolawole Fasusi said the marketers and their leaders were contracted to get the foodstuffs for the council.

He said the council’s target was 10,000 people, and it hoped to get more people to benefit in subsequent editions, appealing to those who couldn’t make a purchase to wait for the next edition.

“Those that didn’t get from the first batch should be rest assured of benefitting from the next batch. We are going to do triple of what we have done now,” he said.

  • Herbalist, Masquerade held over Sergeant’s murder

An 82-year-old herbalist, Babatunde Rufai, head of Igunuko Masquerade, Ariyo Elegbede and eight others have been arrested by the police in Lagos following last week’s murder of Sergeant Collins Esiabor.

Sergeant Esiabor was lynched on August 29, by suspected members of Aiye cult at Ifako-Ijaiye who were said to have protested the death of their colleague.

Others arrested in connection with the crime were Adewunmi Suleiman, 28, Olorunda Michael, 21, Omoba Idowu, 27, Olarewaju Hammed, 20, Ransom Adewuye, 27, Ayo Adeyanju, 27, Anu Akinola,24 and Ige Akanbi, 29.

According to Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, the herbalist was found to have treated a self inflicted gunshot injury on one of the suspects, who mishandled an AK47 rifle the mob seized from the police Sergeant.

He said Elegbede took part in the lynching of the cop adding that both men were official native doctors for the cult group and usually treated members’ gunshot wounds without reporting same to the police as stipulated.

Although Elegbede denied the allegation, Edgal said he partook in the treatment of the injured member, said to have fled to Ondo State and concealed the information from the police.

He said: “On August 29, at Haruna Bus Stop, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ogba, a mob, for no good reason and without any provocation whatsoever, attacked a police team and vandalised a patrol van stationed to provide security in the area, leading to the death of Sergeant Collins Esiabor.

“I promised then that the command will do all it can to unravel and prosecute those behind the dastardly act. Investigation launched into the incident led to the arrest of 10 suspects.

“The suspects are cultists as attested to by one of them, Ayo Adeyanju, who conveyed the corpse of their late member to the burial site. On their way, they decided to avenge the death of the deceased on the police patrol team even though it is clear that the police had no physical contact whatsoever with the deceased.

“According to the suspects, the deceased sighted policemen within his vicinity and attempted to scale a fence believing they were after him. Unfortunately, he put the wrong foot forward and fatally injured himself.

“Meanwhile, two native doctors, Babatunde Rufai and Ariyo Elegbede, mentioned as accomplices to the group were also arrested. Recovered from them are a dane gun and assorted charms,” said Edgal.
Continuing, the police boss said those arrested would be charged with murder, adding that efforts were on to arrest other fleeing suspects.

He said: “Those guys confronted the police and seized an AK47 rifle from the policeman. They did not know how to operate the gun and so, one of them mistakenly shot himself on the foot with the rifle.

“These are the babalawos who they went to for treatment. They are official babalawo for the cult group. So, anytime they have gunshot wounds they go to them for treatment and these men conceal the information from the police.

“Besides, they live in that neighbourhood and heard what happened to a policeman yet they never told us about a gunshot victim they treated until investigation implicated them.

  • Mob kill policeman, injure another in Lagos

    .Vandalise patrol van

A policeman identified as Sergeant Collins Esiabor was on Wednesday killed and his unnamed colleague injured during an attack on a patrol vehicle by angry youths.

The incident occurred around 11am, at College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos.

It was gathered that the youths were returning from Area G Command where they went to register their anger over the death of one of their peers.

Their anger against the police, it was gathered followed the death of their friend said to have had a scuffle with some policemen.

The unnamed young man was said to have been brutally beaten up by a team of policemen and abandoned to die. He was later rushed to a hospital by onlookers and allegedly died on Wednesday.

Angered by the development, the mob upon sighting the patrol van, descended on the policemen inside, stoning and clubbing them.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP) said five persons have been arrested in connection with the attack.

He said: “A police patrol team stationed at a black spot in the area was attacked by a mob for a yet to be determined reason.

“In the process, Sergeant Esiabor Collins with service number 260326, was attacked and killed. Also, the patrol vehicle was not spared by the rampaging mob which they vandalised.

“Preliminary investigation into the incident revealed that the mob, mainly youths had earlier that morning gone to Area ‘G’ Command, Ogba with the intention to overrun the police formation and commit arson but found it impregnable.

“However, the Area Commander in-charge, spoke to them, promising to start an investigation into their grievances which bothered on the death of a youth who allegedly died today (Wednesday), two weeks after an alleged encounter with some policemen.

“It must be clearly stated that the police authorities in the state are unaware of any encounter with the deceased as no formal complaint was received to that effect.

“The Commissioner of Police noted that the penchant to take laws into own hands by some people who easily constitute themselves into a mob is becoming worrisome to say the least.

“The command stated that the deceased officer and indeed the entire patrol team had the option of defending themselves with their firearms against the mob but chose to show restraint in the face of provocation.

“Unfortunately, the rampaging mob never allowed them that option hence Sergeant Collins paid the supreme price.
“The Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal noted that policemen in the state had on several occasions shown restraints in the face of provocative actions. ”

He warned that policemen may be forced to use their firearms to defend themselves.

“He urged parents to warn their children to refrain from such acts which according to him, may lead to a breach of the peace and unnecessary bloodletting.”
