  • ‘I ‘ll beat APC candidate in Ifako-Ijaye House of Reps poll’

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Lagos State, Fatima Mohammed, had joined the House of Representatives race in Ifako-Ijaye Constituency.

She boasted that she will get the ticket at the primary and beat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate at the poll because she is popular.

Mohammed said she commanded respect among the PDP and APC members in the local government, adding that her philanthropist activities have made her a community woman.

The aspirant, who spoke with our correspondent in Ikeja, said the personalities of candidates, and not their parties, will determine the outcome of the federal legislative election in the constituency.

She described Ifako-Ijaye Constituency as a politically conscious area where constituents have sharpened their skills for electing candidates based on merit and competence.

Mohammed said when an unpopular candidate is fielded by parties, voters would respond with apathy by shunning the polling booths in protest.

The aspirant predicted success for herself at the PDP primary, adding that she will give the APC candidate a run for his/her money.

She said she had rejected the overtures to return to the progressive bloc in Lagos since she defected from the fold in 2007, following the failure of Mr. Jimi Agbaje to pick the Alliance for Democracy (AD) governorship ticket.

Mohammed hailed the womenfolk in Ifako/Ijaye, who she described as her permanent fans, adding that they would prefer her to other candidates in next year’s poll.

She said: “I am waiting for the race to commence. I am joining the race for the House of Representatives in  Ifako/Ijaye. Certain circumstances aborted my desire to represent the constituency in the past. But, for 2019, the foast is clear for me. People are waiting for me. I will get the PDP ticket and defeat the APC candidate. I have the support base. I have the people behind me. 2019 is my year of going to the House of Representatives.”

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, has approved the construction of a bridge at the Fagba intersection in Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Area to ease the perennial gridlock and reduce travel time within the axis.

Ambode gave the approval after inspecting the ongoing construction of the Pen Cinema Bridge, where he observed the need to holistically address the gridlock around Agege-Iju axis.

According to him, the development is in response to the various yearnings of the community in Fagba and several road users plying the Iju-Fagba axis.

He said it was also in furtherance of his administration’s commitment in ensuring free-flow of traffic and reducing man-hour loss across the state.

“Iju Road, one of the major roads in Lagos State, has over the years, served as a strategic growth pole in the socio-economic landscape of the state.

“The proposed bridge at Fagba will be constructed concurrently with the ongoing Pen Cinema flyover, and accelerated to minimise the inconvenience of the motoring and commuting public during the period of construction.

“The bridge will have a dual carriageway separated by concrete median barrier.

“It will allow seamless flow of traffic into Jonathan Coker for vehicular movement from College Road/Pen Cinema and vice-versa for traffic from Jonathan Coker Road, that is Iju or College Road bound,’’ the governor said.

Ambode said the Fagba Bridge on completion, would go a long way to improve socio-economic activities, enhance development and safety of road users in the axis with consequent improved standard of living.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state government recently completed several road projects totaling 130 kilometers and the network of 21 boundary roads in Alimosho Local Government.

  • My grouse against APC primary in Ifako-Ijaye, by aspirant

An All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for the House of Representatives in Ifako/Ijaiye Federal Constituency, Lagos State, James Owolabi, has spoken on the outcome of the poll.

He said his loyalty to the party was intact, noting that all hands must be on deck to win the election.

Owolabi, who polled 166 votes at the delegates’ election, said Mr Akinwunmi, who emerged as the candidate with 219 votes, could not match him on the field.

He described himself as a committed party man and popular contender.

Owolabi said while some aspirants were asked to step down, and one contender disqualified, he was the aspirant to beat.

He said: “More than three times now, I have made known my intention to run for the House of Reps, but I was at one point or the other stopped by the party. We all need to be given a level playing field.

“On the eve of the election, I ran for my dear life when I learnt I was going to be abducted. I was called to come and effect my withdrawal from the race. Imposition is no longer in vogue in our party. So, this experience is not envisaged. We should have been informed not to purchase forms at N2.2m each, if an anointed candidate had been premeditated.

“Many of these developments I am sure our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, would never be a part of. there were clear instances of intimidation right in the premises where the primary was held.

The aspirant complained that the party has been victimising him after the poll.

Owolabi added: “I am however, perturbed that after the primary, I got home and met a license revocation letter for my wife’s PSP operation ‘Oye Balogun Enterprises, without any reason, I want the concerned authorities to review their stance on this matter because my wife’s business should not suffer due to my political ambition.”
