    Work permit delays Ifeanyi Matthew’s Norway debut

    Ex-Kano Pillars star Ifeanyi Matthew is yet to make his much-awaited debut for new Norwegian club Lillestrom as he has yet to be issued a work permit.

    The exciting midfielder bagged a four-year deal with Lillestrom after he shone on trials there recently.

    He has continued to shine in training for the Norwegian club, but he has yet to play his first official game because he has not got his work permit.

    “The work permit takes a little longer these days and that is why he has not made his debut. But for that he would have played because he has continued to do very well in training,” a source informed.

    Lillestrom are 12th on the table with 22 points from 21 matches.

    Highly-promising Nigerian midfielder, Ifeanyi Matthew, has signed a four-year contract with Norwegian club, Lillestrom.

    The 20-year-old Matthew featured for Kano Pillars on loan from FC Hearts this season, africanFootball.com reports.

    He has previously played for another NPFL side, El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri.

    The midfielder represented Nigeria at U-17 and U-20 levels.

    He also featured at this year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda, where former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, picked him as Nigeria’s best player at the tournament.

    Enyimba goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai, Pillars star midfielder Ifeanyi Matthew and Rangers forward Chisom Egbuchulam have been named on a 35-man squad to open training camp in Abuja on Monday ahead of a series of matches in Spain next month.

    A letter signed by Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer of the LMC directed the invited players to report for the first phase of camping that will open on July 11 and end on the 18th.

    The letter said the players during the period will be released to play for their clubs in League and Federation Cup fixtures. The second and final phase of the camping will open on August 1 leading to the team’s departure on August 8.

    The squad was selected by a poll of coaches of the NPFL carried out to pick players for the different positions.

    The NPFL All-Stars will while in Spain play a pre-season friendly with Valencia CF and also participate in the annual Carranza LaLiga World Club Tournament in which they will play against Malaga CF on August 12 and 13.

    The list is made up of four goalkeepers, eight defenders, three defensive midfielders, seven central midfielders, seven wingers and six centre forwards.

    Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has said midfielder Ifeanyi Matthew has played his way into the main team after he picked him as his best player at the recent African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda.

    Oliseh has said at least seven players from CHAN team led by Matthew have proved they are good enough for the full Super Eagles.

    “From CHAN, it is no secret that Ifeanyi Mathew was our best and most consistent player there. Personally, he is one of the players I am looking at for the Super Eagles,” africanFootball.com quoted the Eagles coach as saying on the player.

    “I just hope he does not lose form or suffer any injury.

    “We had at least seven very good players from CHAN who can stand up to the high level because I put them through high tempo play.”

    The 19-year-old Matthew, playing as the second defensive midfielder, was an ever-present as Nigeria crashed out in the group stage of the CHAN.

    The versatile player has already represented Nigeria at U-17and U-20 levels.

    Oliseh also disclosed his plans for next month’s crucial African Nations Cup qualifiers against Egypt.

    He said:  “I plan to invite two players for each wing and they will fight it out in training. The player who is more ready will play.

    “I will not see home-based or foreign-based player when they hit camp.”

    Nigeria International, Ifeanyi Matthew revealed he is set to pen a deal that will see him join Kano Pillars ahead of the new NPFL season.

    His exploits for El-Kanemi Warriors earned him a place in the Super Eagles B squad to the CHAN 2016 and he now has his sights set on winning silverware with the Masu Gida side and qualifying for continental football.

    “The reason I am going to Pillars is to help them win the league and get qualification to play in a continental competition;  that’s my aim for joining the club this season.”

    CHAN: Ibenegbu, Matthew dazzle in Eagles’ training

    Established Nigeria league campaigner, Ikechukwu “Mosquito” Ibenegbu and emerging star Ifeanyi Matthew have been impressing in the Super Eagles training camp ahead of next weekend’s African Nations Championship in Rwanda.

    Officials told africanFootball.com that other players who have impressed in the Eagles training camp in Pretoria, South Africa, are Olympic Team midfielder, Usman Mohammed and little known Shooting Stars midfielder, Ibrahim Salawu.

    Ibenegbu scored the Eagles’ goal against Angola in Thursday’s friendly in Pretoria and his overall contribution in the midfield has won him the admiration of coach Sunday Oliseh.
