    Ifeanyi Ubah:1971-2024 (2)

Asides business and politics, Ubah stood tall as a philanthropist who sought to touch lives and left an indelible mark in that aspect.

Through various initiatives and schemes, Ubah through his foundation also implemented numerous community development projects, particularly in education, entrepreneurship and healthcare. His scholarship programs, programs for the physically challenged and medical outreach initiatives did also benefit many underprivileged individuals in his constituency and beyond.

Thousands of Nigerians, beyond tribe,  tongue and religion, young and old were beneficiaries of his large heart, his philantrophy resonated majorly with the downtrodden while he chose to lift them to a more befitting status. Ubah not only handed fish, he also showed many how to fish, churning out numerous millionaires in such a gesture, a lot more also received funds to study within the country and even outside.

His philanthropic efforts during crisis periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic, where he provided relief materials and support to communities, highlight his commitment to corporate social responsibility and community welfare.

One other trait of the late Ubah was his rugged belief in the philosophy of  “Aku Lue Uno” or Think Home Philosophy which seeks to connect one’s  home with the wealth from the businesses established outside. This not only helped create jobs but it attracted development and signature projects such as the games and industrial village which placed his hometown Nnewi and neigbouring Ozubulu on the global map as it was to boast of facilities such as two international standard like  stadia which would have multiple training pitches,  an industrial park and technology hub,  a sports academy, hospital,  conference centre amongst many other facilities that would boost its choice as a place for sporting events, tourism, investments and business in turn creating a boost for the local and state economy.

Ubah despite his limited form of education was a man brimming with ideas, once, I listened to him while he talked about his ideas to transform the Anambra business/economic sector with the use of data, and I must say that I was wowed and i much believe that his burning desire to govern the state would have been beneficial to the state. Ubah indeed was a visionary; one who could see the future  from that time and connect the dots  seamlessly.

Asides the earlier mentioned projects, another testament to Ubah’s visionary leadership remains how he was able to initiate and deploy singlehandedly a sophisticated surveillance center to help counter crime in his home town of Nnewi.  The center featured an array of over 100 television monitors, each displaying live feeds from different sections of the Nnewi metropolis. Such an initiative had helped reduce the crime rate in Nnewi and its environs by allowing for the immediate review of  surveillance footage, whilst identifying the perpetrators as well as coordinate effective responses. Now, at a time when the same Anambra state is at the mercy of kidnappers  robbers, cultists and unknown gun men, Ubah was walking the talk on security!

Of a truth, the impact of his passing has resonated deeply across Nigeria, particularly in his home state of Anambra, where countless lives were touched by his generosity. In Nnewi, his hometown, the grief has been especially profound. The traditional ruler, Igwe Kenneth Orizu, declared a formal three-day mourning period, yet the community’s sorrow has extended well beyond this official observance. Even now, four months after his untimely and painful demise, a palpable sense of loss continues to hang over the town, reflected in the somber faces and subdued atmosphere of its residents. His untimely departure at just 52 years of age did leave  an indelible void not only in the community but also amongst family, friends, associates, staff and loyalists

As Nigeria continues to evolve, Ubah’s legacy will likely be remembered for its multifaceted nature – combining business success, political influence, sports development, and community service. His journey provides valuable lessons about the intersection of business and politics in Nigeria, and the potential for indigenous entrepreneurs to make significant impacts across various sectors.

Ifeanyi Patrick Ubah’s legacy is characterized by its diversity and complexity. From revolutionizing aspects of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector to contributing to sports development and political leadership, his impact spans multiple domains of Nigerian society. While his journey includes both achievements and controversies, his ability to maintain relevance and influence across different sectors sets him apart as a significant figure in contemporary Nigerian history.

His story continues to evolve, but his contributions to business development, sports, politics, and community service have already left lasting impressions that will influence future generations of Nigerian entrepreneurs and political leaders. As Nigeria faces ongoing challenges in economic development and political evolution, the lessons from Ubah’s journey – both successes and setbacks – provide valuable insights for understanding the complexities of business and political leadership in modern Nigeria.

Fare thee well EbubeChukwuUzo na Odejimjim, you fought a good fight and with tears amidst the cheers I salute your legacy and pray that it shines through the ages as a light to the path for this generation and future generations of Nigerians.

  • Ifeanyi Ubah: 1971-2024 (1)

    Ifeanyi Ubah: 1971-2024 (1)

From a humble background, this son of a school principal rose from a point of relative obscurity to becoming one of Nigeria’s most prominent business and political figures. His story is an example of the “zero to hero” narrative of entrepreneurial grit and political stardom – not a dream or fairytale, but the grim reality that one can rise to the heights of success without the advantages of birth or fortune.

Ifeanyi Ubah’s rise to prominence was marked by both remarkable achievements and controversies, painting a portrait of a modern Nigerian businessman-turned-politician whose accomplishments in the private and public sectors stand as a monumental testament.

Born on September 3, 1971, in Nnewi, Anambra State, Ubah’s early life was characterized by modest beginnings. As the son of a school principal, he surprised many by choosing to delve into the auto parts trade, popularly known as the “Spare Parts” business, rather than follow in his father’s footsteps, pursue a university education, and become a civil servant or join the booming private sector. Ifeanyi Ubah seemed determined to forge his own path, despite entreaties from his family and peers.

Bound for Lagos, Ubah’s early exposure to commerce would later prove instrumental in shaping his business acumen, perhaps more than the confines of academia could have. On establishing himself, he ventured into the spare parts business, using his energy and savvy to expand beyond his initial starting point. From these humble beginnings, he diversified into other sectors, including oil and gas. His company, Capital Oil and Gas, not only established itself as a well-known brand, but also became the flagship of his business interests and one of Nigeria’s major players in the downstream oil and gas sector.

Under Ubah’s leadership, Capital Oil grew to become one of Nigeria’s largest indigenous oil and gas companies playing in the downstream sector. The company’s strategic location at the Apapa Wharf in Lagos and its massive storage facilities positioned it as a key player in Nigeria’s petroleum products distribution network. The facility’s storage capacity of over 190 million liters made it one of the largest privately owned depots in Africa.

However, this period also saw its share of challenges. The company faced scrutiny over fuel subsidy payments and had various run-ins with financial institutions over debt issues. Despite these challenges, Ubah managed to maintain and even expand his business interests.

Demonstrating his business versatility, Ubah further expanded beyond oil and gas, venturing into various sectors including real estate development, international trade, manufacturing, sports management (through the acquisition of Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club), and media (with Authority Newspaper, AUTHORITY FM, and plans to launch Authority Television before his demise).

His football club, FC Ifeanyi Ubah, put Anambra State back on the National Football League scene, using his contacts to bring professional football to his home state and help develop young talent in Nigerian sports, including winning the prestigious FA Cup in 2016 and representing the state in continental club competitions.

His newspaper, radio and television station, under the brand  name, Authority, offered the young Ubah the opportunity to afford the SouthEast and the Igbo nation an opportunity to enhance its narratives in the public sphere, challenging the long held dominance of  the Lagos/Ibadan press, something a responsibility a number of top Igbos icons have shied away from save for the likes of Orji Uzor Kalu and the late Emmanuel Iwuayanwu. Not only that it produced a new crop of journalists who would go on to become household names on print and radio.

Ubah’s foray into politics at both state and national levels did not begin with his decision to run for governor of Anambra State under the Labour Party platform in 2013. He had earlier begun his political involvement by delivering Nnewi North LGA to Chris Ngige’s Action Congress, which was the local government of the then National Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and former Biafran secessionist leader Dim Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu, in the 2010 election. This was a significant feat for a political newcomer like Ubah at the time. Ubah then went on to seek the office of governor on three occasions, proving his ability to combine his mastery in business with the art of politics. Although he remained unsuccessful until his demise, his relevance as a top political player could not be dismissed. The Labour Party’s  two victories in the then Anambra State Local Government elections of 2013, where he repeatedly demystifed Governor Obi, forcing the latter to impose a sole administrator in Nnewi showed that Ubah was no longer a lightweight while his shock defeat of political titans like Senator Andy Uba and Nicholas Ukachukwu with an unknown political platform, Young People’s Party, YPP in 2019 earned him widespread acclaim.  Repeating such a performance in the 2023 polls solidified his status as a formidable political force, as well as put an end to the assumption that his victory in 2019 was a merely a flash in the pan.

Ifeanyi Ubah’s death left us in confusion -Anambra APC chieftain

In spite of many good things President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has done for the Ndigbo, including high-profile political appointments, some Igbo people are far from satisfied with his administration. But one Igbo leader who would not fail to acknowledge Tinubu’s deeds for the tribe is Chief Modestus Umenzekwe. He, however, believes there are certain things the President needs to do to enlist greater support from the tribe. He listed these in an Interview with South East Bureau Chief NWANOSIKE ONU. He also talks about the spate of insecurity in Anambra State, the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah who represented Anambra South until he passed on recently, the 2025 governorship election and the planned local government elections announced by the Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, among other issues.

Here is massive insecurity in Anambra State. What is really going on?

I am not in government. Neither am I one of the security agents. But from my own point of view, i don’t know how much my brother (Governor Chukwuma Soludo) collects as security vote from the federal government. But no matter the amount, let him rejig his strategy and invest heavily on security.

Anambra used to be a very peaceful place and home for all. But today, it is no longer business as usual. Anambra people are relocating to supposedly safer states. And that is seriously affecting the economy of the state.

Yes, I believe the governor is trying his best. But his best is not yet enough to give us what we want and reduce the insecurity in the state to the barest minimum. When you build roads and flyovers here and there, they are excellent jobs and commendable. But it is only when you are alive to move freely that you can enjoy those facilities. Otherwise, it would amount to efforts in futility.

Insecurity has impeded all other economic indices of the state. Fortunately for us, our governor is a professor of Economics and a member of the presidential economic team of the renewed hope agenda, for which i commend him for acknowledging that the renewed hope economic policies of the President are good ones that would have long time good effects on our people. And that is why he appealed to us (Nigerians) to be patient with the President. I totally agree with him on that. But the gains patience cannot be enjoyed if we are leaving in fear on account of security.

Members of the governor’s party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), are also not happy with him. Why?

I am not a member of APGA and cannot go into their internal wranglings. So it is left for the party to sort themselves out. The way you see things is not the way I see them. I have not taken time to access the totality of Governor Soludo’s achievements or failur because I know he said he should be given 24 months for anyone to access him. Therefore, I have not gone into that.

I am not speaking for my party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) but I’m as a true son of Anambra State who is a committed member of APC, and I know that President Bola Tinubu, whose party in Anambra State is in opposition, has given an unfettered hands to the governors, Anambra State inclusive, to sort out security issues in their states, and that is the angle I am coming from.

Talking about your party, the APC, you recently lost one of the movers of the party  in Anambra State, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who was gunning for the governorship seat also. How did you and your party receive the news of his death?

In my statement when the news broke, I said it is one death too many. We received the news with rude shock. His exit has created a lot of confusion because there were two of them in the race, qualified ones for that matter; himself and Chief Paul Chukwuma (Onyechinazo). I said confusion because for now, we don’t know what to do. Even Paul Chukwuma is confused too, and that is why he shut down his political activities for 30 days to mourn his friend and fellow political giant.

You see, we were thinking about how to bring the two of them together as a family, because our party is a very big and united family; to do the primary between the two of them and know whether it is Ubah or Chukwuma we should follow. So, we’re still chewing the situation and keeping quiet until we finish the funeral rites of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Both of them are close to me and represented themselves in person and proxy on 19th July when I buried my Very Reverend Father uncle.

So, the only thing I can tell you is that APC in Anambra State and Nigeria is still mourning. And when we come out from it, we will be able to make a statement

Do you think the people of the state are ready to embrace APC?

The answer is yes. This is because every day, even in my locality, you will see people defecting to APC, and the renewed hope agenda of Mr President has given us hope that the entire Southeast zone is part and parcel of this country. Mr President, in his magnanimity, appointed our son Senator Dave Umahi as the Minister of Works, the first of its kind since the 1960s, and gave him unfettered hands to fix all the roads in his region and make himself proud. At least, it is going to improve on what our political role model, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, did in his own time as minister, because he did a lot of roads in the Southeast, but time did not allow him to finish some. And he did all that as a lawyer.

Today, an expert in the field, who is our son, is handling the jobs. Therefore, the onus is on us Anambrarians and the Southeast to give him a backing by embracing APC in totality.

Some southeast people, especially members of the opposition parties, believe that Asiwaju Tinubu has not performed as expected in the one year he has been in office. What’s your take on this?

I don’t agree Nigerians as a people, including myself, are impatient. This President came from the background of activism. An activist is not known to segregate but to enact a whole and encompassing policies that will benefit everybody. Some of the policies he has brought out are at the foundation stage which will result into a nice building all of us will occupy.

Yes, it is a fact that we did not give him many votes, But the same thing applies to his own area (the Southwest) where some of those people are still going about in different media houses calling him all sorts of names and making nasty statements about him. Are you telling me he would starve them of the dividends of democracy in that zone or even in the North? The answer, to me, is no. I sum it up to say the patient dog eats the fattest bone. Therefore we should give him a chance.

But in your opinion as an APC chieftain in the Southeast, do you think Mr President has performed within the short time, going by his appointments?

There is one thing I always believe in, Mr A or B must not be in government to do nation building. It can only be one person. Also, he is a man that gave us one of the service chiefs. He gave works minister, and the two or three appointments he has made in the last few weeks, the people of Southeast are there. To some of us it is not yet enough, but I believe he is taking his time and our expectations will be met because there are many appointments yet to be made.

Your answer has taken care of the agitations of Igbo on appointments from Mr President. What do you think Igbo people really want?

I think that they want to be embraced totally in every sector. Because of what we suffered during the war, we were devastated, and since then, we have been crying for total rehablitation in the policy making of this country. That is why we are very glad that the President, using the instrumentality of the National Assembly, has signed into law the Southeast Development Commission SEDC as reintroduced by the Deputy Speaker, Hon Benjamin Kalu, which Senator Uche Ekwunife introduced during her time. So, by signing it into law, we believe that the three Rs of the Gowon regime (reconciliation, reconstruction and rehabilitation) has come into effect.

Another thing we want is giving us additional state in the Southeast as recommended by Chief Arthur Mbanefo to the committee on state creation and boundary adjustment Committee 1996 as well as the National Constitutional Conference of 2014. There will be an addition to recognising and giving our sons and daughter more federal appointments.

Going forward, I’m appealing to Mr President to apply human wisdom which he is known for, and political solution to release our brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This singular act, if he gives it positive attention, will bring to an end the sit-at-home exercise and insecurity bedeviling the southeast region for some years.

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has fixed a date for  the first council polls and it is generating a lot of controversy in the state. How do you react to it?

Credible Democratic principle is what we have been yearning for in Anambra and the entire country. The announcement is a welcomed development. But the snag there is the time frame, which I do not know if it complies with the extant electoral laws. I had expected ANSIEC to give adequate notice, at least three months. This would give every political party the opportunity to prepare and conduct primaries in order to select candidates for the various election positions.

As you can see, many political parties are threatening court actions.  How long are we going to continue like that? The situation is not healthy. I appeal to ANISEC to look into the agitations of political parties and do the needful so that no political party would feel short-changed.

    And if they don’t ?

There may be several court actions which will not be good for Anambra State.

  • Ifeanyi Ubah’s unfulfilled dreams

    Ifeanyi Ubah’s unfulfilled dreams

If a soothsayer had told Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah while he was alive that he was going to bid this sinful world good-bye this year, he would have argued.

In fact with his deep pocket and financial war chest, he would have been able to afford the best health care in the world and also employ the best doctors to monitor his health, but the dreaded grim reaper has struck again by taking him on an eternal journey of no return with several unfulfilled dreams hanging.

The billionaire oil mogul and boss of Capital Oil’s demise has left the whole country in a state of disbelief as many who know him and the giant strides in making his southeast region a haven, are still living in denial. Many people still believe the news is a prank that the distinguished Senator representing Anambra South is sleeping and is going to wake up anytime soon.

His death has not only thrown a lacuna that will be hard to fill but those who he had touched their lives with his God-Given wealth would be hit the most. Their benefactor will no longer answer their calls as they will no longer have access to his house in Nnewi, Abuja or Omole in Lagos. It has become a hard pill to swallow even for his immediate family, supporters, political associates and colleagues in the red chamber.

While he was alive, he remained the proverbial cat with nine lives. After several attempts to cut him down, he over-conquered his enemies both politically and in business. Since his foray into the murky waters of politics, one thing was constant for him, his ability to bring about the much-needed change to his people and give them the dividend of democracy at all costs. In the run-up to the 2023 general elections, his detractors thought he was never going to win his re-election but the Nnewi-born Capital Oil boss showed that he had indeed come of age as a politician and gathered the much-needed experience. After his victory at the 2019 and 2023 Anambra South Senatorial Election with his moribund Young Progressive Party (YPP), singlehandedly breaking the Andy and Chris Uba brother’s stronghold in Anambra South Senatorial district as he gave them a run for their money crashing their winning streak in the district spanning into years. He has since prioritized his people as he has invested heavily in security, health, education, road rehabilitation, bill sponsoring, women and youth empowerment and lots more.

Due to celebrate his 53rd birthday on September 3, he was also planning to remember his aides who died while protecting his life. And his long-standing ambitions of governing Anambra State have been put to an end.

Ifeanyi Ubah: Nnewi monarch Orizu declares 3-day mourning

The death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the All Progressives Congress (APC) deeply shocked the people of Nnewi community and the entire Anambra state.

In his reaction to Utah’s demise, the traditional ruler of the kingdom, Igwe Kenneth Orizu, has declared a three-day mourning period in the community.

He has called on all clergies in and around the community to pray for the repose of their esteemed son.

Senator Ubah, who represented the Anambra South Senatorial zone and held the chieftaincy title of Ebubechukwuzo, passed away on Saturday in London after attending one of his children’s graduations.

In a statement signed by Prince Dr. Obi Orizu, Principal Secretary to Igwe Nnewi, the monarch urged the people of Nnewi and non-indigenous residents to join in mourning the loss.

The statement also invited clergies from various religious groups to lead their congregations in prayers for the peaceful repose of Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah.

The three-day mourning period will commence on July 30, and end on August 1.

Before his death, Ubah was a significant figure in the Nnewi community, having contributed extensively to its infrastructural development.

His sudden demise has brought great sorrow to the traditional ruler, his subjects, and many people in Anambra State.

Chief Modestus Umenzekwe, a chieftain of the APC in the Southeast, remarked that many people in Anambra will feel the impact of Ubah’s death, as he had benefitted numerous individuals in the community.

Ifeanyi Ubah was passionate about economic empowerment of his people, says ex-AGF Adoke

Former minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, on Sunday, July 28, described late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, as a man who was an outstanding advocate for social justice and economic empowerment for Nigerians during his lifetime.

Adoke, who made this assertion in his tribute to Senator Ubah in Abuja, also said Ubah was a focused, compassionate politician and business mogul who prioritised the welfare and economic prosperity of his people in particular and Nigerians in general.

The statement reads in part: “On Saturday 27th July 2024, Nigerians woke to the sad and shocking news of the demise in the United Kingdom of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

“Senator Ubah was a focused, compassionate politician and business Mogul who prioritised the welfare and economic prosperity of his people in particular and Nigerians in general.

“His contributions on the floor of the Senate where he served two terms (from 2019 when he was first elected and re-elected in 2023) bear glowing testimony to his belief in the Nigerian Project and unwavering commitment and resolve to uplift the masses of this great country from the shackles of poverty, hunger, and disease.

“Senator Ubah was also a sports enthusiast. He owned FC Ifeanyi Ubah football club and a foundation that caters to the needs of the people of his Senatorial District.

“Senator Ubah was ebullient and full of life. The news of his demise was therefore a rude shock to Nigerians and has understandably evoked a deep sense of loss from those who had the good fortune of working and interacting closely with him.

“I was introduced to Senator Ubah by Chief Gabriel Chukwuma (aka Gabros), another fine gentleman, sports enthusiast, and businessman of repute.

“The friendship quickly blossomed to a level that our families became quite close. I recall during my travails in exile, he visited me severally.

“On such visits, he would pray with me and counsel me on the need to have faith in God and eschew bitterness towards my traducers and that at God’s appointed time the travails would end as he was convinced that I was just a victim of political machinations.

“He openly identified with me and provided support at a time I was considered a pariah even by those I regarded as friends but for reasons of self-preservation and determination to remain in the good books of the political leadership of the country, considered it expedient to disassociate themselves from me.

“I wish to place on record that in all my official and personal interactions with Senator Ubah, I found him to be passionate about the economic empowerment of his people and the development of our dear country.

“He demonstrated this commitment through his numerous business ventures, especially in the Oil and Gas sector; undertaking developmental projects in his constituency and empowering the people.

“It is therefore not surprising that his people kept electing him overwhelmingly to the Senate even when he contested on the ticket of a fringe political party such as the Young Progressives Party (YPP) from where he recently decamped to the APC.

“Despite his enormous wealth and political attainment, he remained calm, humble, and unassuming. These are rare qualities that are lacking amongst our political elites today. Nigeria has indeed lost an outstanding advocate for social Justice and economic empowerment.

“I therefore join his family, the good people of Anambra South Senatorial District, and millions of his well-wishers around the world in praying to the Almighty God for the repose of his gentle soul.”
