Assemblies of God Church: Deposed GS seeks Ugwuanyi’s intervention

The deposed General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria, Rev. Paul Emeka is seeking the intervention of Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and other relevant authorities to in the crisis rocking the church in order to avert looming violent crisis in the
    state.

He told reporters Tuesday in Enugu that the governor’s intervention, which he promised several times but has not done so, was necessary due to the fact that the national headquarters of the church is located at Enugu and has now become theatre of war.

The Church has been in crisis since 2014 with two General Superintendents holding sway. They are Rev. Prof. Paul Emeka and Rev. Dr. Chidi Okoroafor who now controls the headquarters after the Supreme Court ruled in his favour.

Emeka urged the governor to advise Rev Okoroafor’s group and the police to obey the latest federal High court order restraining them from further taking laws into their hands to avoid breakdown of law and order.

He described as laughable, the latest notice of “purported” excommunication and dis-fellowship for life, handed down on him and 129 other pastors loyal to him, by the Rev. Chidi Okoroafor-led faction of the church.

While dismissing the excommunication, which he said was the 6th since the crisis started, as null and void, and of no effect; he stated that the Church’s constitution has no provision for such and that shows the desperation of some people who were motivated by monetary gain to hijack the church illegally.

He urged the general public to discountenance the purported notice of excommunication as published in a national newspaper, insisting that he remains the authentic General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Church.

Rev Emeka explained that the Supreme Court recently delivered a judgment dismissing an application in which he challenged his suspension as General Superintendent on March 6, 2014.

According to him, the apex court ruled that the respondents were not properly served even as the matter was instituted through fundamental human rights enforcement as against originating summons, meaning that he should go back to the lower court and do the needful.

“The Supreme Court however made no order to warrant enforcement, a development that made the office of the Attorney General of the Federation in a legal opinion to declare that ‘parties are advised to maintain status quo ante prior to the judgment and approach the appropriate court for interpretation of the judgment”.

Emeka narrated that violent crisis ensued in the church following the forceful takeover of the national secretariat of the church at Enugu by the Okoroafor-led faction, illegally assisted by the police; and further attempt to take over other branches of the church nationwide including Kaduna state.

He said that this made the Attorneys-General of Enugu and Kaduna states respectively to issue notices and advised the parties to maintain status quo ante as the Supreme Court judgment was a
“non-executory judgment” and that the Supreme Court did not decide on the substantive right of the parties and it is therefore erroneous for any of the parties to claim any right arising from the judgment of the Supreme Court”.

Rev Emeka further stated that even when Enugu state Commissioner of police sought legal opinion from the office of Enugu State’s Attorney General, he was told in writing that “the judgment which you annexed is not executory and it did not confer any propriety right on any of
the parties… and did not contain any order capable of being enforced”.

The embattled General Superintendent noted that besides, his faction had obtained an ex-parte order from the Federal High Court, Enugu Division, restraining security agencies from inhibiting them from entering the national headquarters to hold their prayers and other activities.

We will win future elections – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State on Sunday expressed optimism that it would win all future elections in the state.

Some chieftains of the party in the state said at a zonal meeting in Awgu for Enugu West that the party would continue to control the state in spite of recent political realignments in the state.

The Deputy Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Chief Donatus Uzogbado, said that the party was not envisaging any challenge from any of the opposition parties in the state.

Uzogbado said that the faithful needed not fret over recent events where some members defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that PDP was “still on ground”.

“The APC challenge is no challenge to us. In fact, the 2019 elections is going to be the easiest for our party in the state,” he said.

Also, the Chairman of Aninri Local Government Area, Mr. Chidi Ekwe, said that the unprecedented peace and unity in the party would be the tonic for its successful outing of the party in future polls.

Ekwe hailed the exemplary relationship between Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, saying that the state had not had it so good.

“We at the local government are trying to replicate the good works of the governor in our various councils,” Ekwe said.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Chief Charles Egungbe, said that the PDP had a well-thought out secession plan which could not be thwarted by any of the opposition parties.

Egungbe said that there was nothing to fear as the PDP was synonymous with the state, adding that the second term of the governor was assured.

He, however, urged the party faithful not to rest on their oars or remain indifferent if the PDP must be successful.

“Our loyalty is with Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and we shall keep supporting him,” Egungbe said.

The member representing Aninri constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Toby Okechukwu, said that Enugu West was a no-go area for the opposition parties.

Okechukwu said that politicians in the area were so focused that even without a political party they could decide where their allegiance stood and would not waiver.

“However, we will do our best to make sure that the party continues to prosper. Our support for the governor is not in vain. We are with him because of what he is doing,” he said.

Meanwhile, the party leadership in the zone received some members of opposition parties in the state who defected to it at the event.

One of them, from All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mrs. Ijeoma Chukwu, said that her decision to join PDP was borne out of conviction that it was the party of the moment in the state.

Chukwu, who was APGA’s candidate for the Enugu West senatorial election in 2015, said that her former party was dying.

“We have decided to join the PDP because of some reasons. I love my former party, APGA, but it is unfortunate the party is gradually dying,” she said.

Champions League: Rangers FC vows to beat JS Saoura of Algeria

Rangers International FC of Enugu has vowed to beat JS Saoura of Algeria in the second leg of the ongoing Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League match coming up on Feb.19, 2017.

Rangers played 1-1 draw with Saoura FC in Algeria on Feb.10 and needs at worst a goal-less draw to qualify for the next round of the competition.

The Media Officer, Foster Chime, on Wednesday said that the club would beat the North African club to seal its qualification.

He said that the players met Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who promised to boost their morale for the match.

“The governor promised to boost the morale of the players for the CAF return leg match against Saoura but he did not mention the amount due to some reasons best known to him,’’ Chime said.

He said that the club would go for the winning goals.

“I know that the match will be a tough one as Saoura showed that they were a good side in the first leg and they would be facing us in Enugu like wounded lions.

“We need goalless draw to progress but the players want to progress with victory and on superior goal difference.

“I am happy players like Captain Okey Odita, Chinedu Udeagha, Etim Mathew and lots more made it known to the technical crew that they will give their all for the club to go far in the ongoing Continental league.

On players’ injury update, the Club’s Physician, Okey Ezeaku, said that there were no serious injuries sustained from the last match.

“All the players are fit and are expected to face Saoura squarely for a slot in the next round.

“Although we had minor knocks after the match in Algeria and Pape Usmane had malaria but all this were bye gone as all the players were now back to training,’’ Ezeaku said.

Rangers’ test match against Abia Comets of Umuahia on Feb. 14, 2017 ended 1-1 as the flying antelopes open scoring in 27th minute through Daniel Etor, while Marshal Okoro restored parity for the visitor in the 42nd minute.

  • Enugu gets new chief judge

Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Friday appointed Hon. Justice Priscilla Ngozi Emehelu, as acting Chief Judge of the state following the retirement of the former chief judge, Justice Innocent Umezulike.

Umezulike was indicted in a recent report released by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The new acting chief judge, Justice Emehelu, was sworn-in after an oath of office administered by the state’s Solicitor-General, Victor Emeribe (Esq).

The governor said Emehelu’s inauguration was consistent with Section 271 (4) of the 1999 constitution as amended.

He said, “If the office of the chief judge of a state is vacant, or if the person holding the office for any reason, is unable to perform the functions of the office, the governor of the state shall appoint the most senior judge of the high court to perform those functions.”

Ugwuanyi added that he had received two letters recommending the former chief judge’s suspension and compulsory retirement from office.

“Accordingly, Hon. Justice Ngozi Priscilla Emehelu, the most senior judge of the High Court of Enugu State, has been appointed and sworn-in as the acting chief judge of Enugu State,” Governor Ugwuanyi noted at the event held at the state’s Executive Council Hall.

  • NPFL: Ekweremadu hails Rangers’ victory

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, on Monday showered praises on the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu for their gallantry and clinching of the Nigeria Football Professional League, NPLF, title in Enugu on Sunday.

A statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, said that Senator Ekweremadu who was at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium to cheer the Flying Antelopes during their last match for the season against the El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri, noted that Rangers had won something more than a league title for their teeming supporters across the world.

It said that a highly elated Ekweremadu, who was in the company of the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, said: “I want to congratulate the players, the management of Rangers, and indeed the Government and good people of Enugu State on this emphatic victory and the reclaim of the league title after a 32-year wait full of disappointments.

“Those who know the history of Rangers understand why this great achievement will resonate across the length and breadth of the South East and South South especially, and indeed every part of the nation and the world where you find rangers fans.

“For us, this is more than just a league title. This is a huge revival, morale booster, and comfort. It is one great achievement that refreshes memories and our survival instincts as a people. It is a reminder to all our people that though sorrow may endure for a night, joy surely comes in the morning”.

It said that Senator Ekweremadu described the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as a jinx breaker and commended him for his fatherly support and encouragement, which spurred the team to victory.

It also said that Ekweremadu assured that Rangers’ successful defence of the league title and their continental campaign in the coming season would be the collective task of all.

While commending the improvements in the NPFL, the Deputy President of the Senate, however, called for more private sector support and greater commitment by the nation’s football managers to lift the round leather game higher in Nigeria.

  • Communities back Ugwuanyi

Ethnic communities in Enugu State have supported the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Describing him as a humble, detribalised and accommodating personality, they said he deserved their votes.

Spokesman for the groups and leader of the Hausa Community in the New Artisan Market, Enugu, Alhaji Sani Mohammed, spoke when he welcomed the PDP campaign train to the market.

He also supported other PDP candidates, saying the party had delivered on its promises and remained the only formidable movement with the capacity to unite the country.

Mohammed noted that the PDP government in Enugu State, under the leadership of Governor Sullivan Chime, had been magnanimous with non-indigenes through its developmental and people-oriented programmes.

He hoped that Ugwuanyi would improve their lives, following his antecedents as an experienced and visionary politician with a  passion to serve the people.

The spokesman enjoined the people to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan and other PDP candidates.

Ugwuanyi thanked the non-indigenous groups for their support and solidarity,  assuring them of his resolve to protect their interests.

He said the non-indigenes would not only remain a part of his administration, but would also enjoy the dividends of democracy and good governance.

The governorship candidate urged them to translate their support for him and other PDP candidates to votes.

  • Court upholds  Ugwuanyi as PDP’s governorship candidate

A Federal High Court in  Abuja yesterday  dismissed a suit filed by Senator Ayogu Eze, challenging the emergence of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in  Enugu State.

Eze sued the PDP, its National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu and the Independent National electoral Commission (INEC), seeking, among others, to be declared the  candidate for the governorship election.

He claimed to have been given the authentic ticket of the party, having emerged from one of the two primary elections conducted in the state last December 8.

While the suit was pending, Ugwuanyi, who is enjoying the support of the national leadership of the PDP, applied and was joined as an interested party.

In his judgment, Justice  Evoh Chukwu  noted that from the averments made, it was only one governorship primary election conducted in Enugu State on December 8 under the watchful eyes of the national officers of the PDP.

“The plaintiff’s suit did not succeed as he failed to show how any section of the constitution or the Electoral Act as well as PDP guidelines for the conduct of governorship primary election was breached or violated,” the judge held.

Justice Chukwu, who earlier dismissed the preliminary objections of the defendants, agreed with the defendants that it was only a political party that could choose its candidate in an election.

The judge held that the power to conduct party primaries rested solely on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party and not the state Executive Council.

Eze had, in a supporting affidavit,  said PDP conducted ward congresses in Enugu State last November 1 as a result of which a list of delegates for the conduct of primary election for the governorship candidate of the party emerged, consisting names of the elected delegates.

He said the list was sanctioned and authenticated by the Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Justice Adeniyi Ademola, in a suit, which judgement was delivered last November 24.

Justice Chukwu held that the sister court “never sanctioned any delegate list. The plaintiff has variously tried to import into the judgment of the sister court what the court did not say.”

He believed that Eze failed to show any evidence indicating that the NWC of the PDP conducted the primary, which  he claimed was the authentic one.

PDP uncovers plot to smear Ugwuanyi’s image

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has cried out over an alleged plot by opponents to execute a campaign of calumny against its candidates, particularly the governorship hopeful, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

A statement by the Director, Media and Publicity of the PDP Campaign Organisation, Mr. Chukwudi Achife, said the party uncovered a plot by the governorship candidate of a major opposition party to spread false stories through newspapers and the social media about Ugwuanyi, to dent his reputation.

He said the antics of the opposition candidate was not surprising, “since he has neither conscience nor an agenda for the development of Enugu State and has resorted to a campaign of falsehood, as this is his only hope of making an impact among the people.”

The PDP campaign spokesman said as in previous occasions, he would fail.

Warning that his party would not allow its image and those of its candidates to be smeared through falsehood, in the name of politics, Achife advised the public to ignore such antics from a politician known for “his desperation to occupy the Lion Building by any means.”
