Davido remembers son, Ifeanyi, years after death

Grammy-nominated singer Davido has remembered his late son, Ifeanyi Adeleke, in a heartfelt tribute on social media.

He wrote on X: “Ifeanyi David Adedeji Adeleke RIP LEGEND !!”.

This tender gesture comes nearly three years after Ifeanyi’s tragic passing.

Ifeanyi’s death occurred on October 31, 2022, when he drowned in the swimming pool at Davido’s Banana Island mansion in Lagos.

The incident happened just a few days after he celebrated his third birthday on October 20, 2022.

An autopsy later confirmed drowning as the cause of death, and an investigation was conducted, involving several domestic workers.

Following Ifeanyi’s passing, Davido took a break from the public eye but eventually returned to his music career, releasing the album “Timeless” in 2023.

Notably, Davido chose not to include a tribute to Ifeanyi in the album, opting to maintain a cheerful tone.

However, he did mark the one-year anniversary of Ifeanyi’s death with a dove emoji on social media.

Since the loss, Davido and his wife, Chioma, have welcomed twins born in the United States in 2023, bringing new joy to their family.

  • 500 get medical care in Abia

It was meant for residents of Isiukwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency in Abia State, but upon learning that a medical outreach was afoot, others turned up from every part of the state and even beyond.

The outreach was organised by a lawmaker representing the constituency Hon Nkeiruka Onyejiocha in conjunction with a foreign-based foundation, Living Hope Medical Team.

It was held at Isuochi General Hospital in the state.

Some ailing participants came a day ahead of the exercise. Tests, treatment and medications were free.

One of the patients, Ifeanyi said he left the hospital where he was on admission for the venue because he believed that since the medical team were experts from the United States, the programme would be better, adding that his health did not improve at the private facility where he was on admission in Bende Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the increasing number of patients was as a result of testimonies from some of the patients who had been treated by the medical team in the past 10years that the event has been running.

In an interview with Hon. Onyejiocha she said “you know that I have sponsored several bills and three out of those bills I sponsored are now laws, which is an act of parliament. That means that am fulfilled as a parliamentarian.

“But then, the people that I represent, do they understand that my job is just to pass bills and then, get them to become law? And the answer is No!

“So, if it is No, what are am I going to do for them to feel my impact? This is just my little way of trying to help out. Of course you know that several times hospitals will go on strike and people at such times would be left to suffer. Some because they could not afford the medical fees charged by private clinics and hospitals die in the process.

“I decided to bring this free medical treatment for my people in order to address some of their medical challenges. It is not going to be enough, but just to try and help, even if it is one or two people that receives treatment, it will go a long way to sooth their pains. We have done this over the years and this is just for 2018.

“This is the 11year of this kind of medical mission and I can tell you that it has impacted a lot. The medical team has performed surgeries on people who cannot afford it. Some people were referred to the hospital even before they come here. They left the hospital just because they couldn’t pay. So, you can see the population here and I am confident that with the help of the people from Living Hope Foundation, they will be attended to without paying any dine.

“The impact is so much and that is why every year, it is increasing. It is to tell you that our health system has not captured what it is supposed to capture. This center is a General Hospital for a local government that only opens when we are doing free medical which speaks volumes about our health system; we come here and remove rats among other things.

“It means that the health system has collapsed and so, if you check what this medical outreach it, then the impact is not commensurate to the need of the people. People are still dying because of malaria, headache. The health system has collapsed.

“It is consoling that every year hundreds of people especially people that are going through hyena operation, cataract, glaucoma and other ailment come here and get treated free of charge from a medical team that are not paid. I am begging them to do it because nobody knows whose turn it will be tomorrow. It is a way of me giving back to the people because I know and believe that health is wealth.”

Asked she managed to keep bringing the medical team from the States and yet don’t collect money from the patients, Hon. Onyejiocha said, “that is my little secret and I keep saying that it is not for the press. What I know is that I have found people who are thinking together and so, we came down together and we sat and we agreed that we have to do it.

“If God keeps us alive by next year, we will still be here same time. Maybe, that time, government would have woken up to give us a befitting structure.”

In an interview, the leader of the medical team, Dr. Sonny Acho described the exercise as fruitful, but however lamented absence of medical facility and conducive environment at the health center which he noted has been one of the major challenges

Dr. Acho who said that they are working with some Nigerian based medical doctors and specialists in different areas of medicine listed hyena, glaucoma, cataract, malaria, etc, as some of the prevalent medical issues that the team handled.

According to him, they referred some of the patients whose cases could not be handled by the team to better equipped hospitals in Nigeria.

Michael Oguesie, from Amuda Isuochi who was scheduled for a hyena operation at the time of the interview said that he got to know about the outreach through announcements in the church and thanked the lawmaker for the care she has for the sick especially, the poor who could not have afford their medical treatment and access to good health facility.

He urged other well to do individuals and politicians in the state to emulate the kind gestures of the Isiukwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency lawmaker. This is even as he appealed for extension of days and number of medical personnel in subsequent editions.

  • Ifeanyi Ubah, Gabros rift settled

    Ifeanyi Ubah, Gabros rift settled

IfeanyiUbah Football Club of Nnewi is now ready for the 2015/2016 season following the resolution of the ownership dispute between Gabriel Chukwuma and the current financier, Ifeanyi Ubah by the traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu III.

The football club, formerly known as Gabros International, is based in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The monarch, who hosted the duo of Ubah and Chukwuma in his palace yesterday for over three hours, explained that he waded into the issue in a bid to resolve the matter and encourage peace among his subjects.

Speaking through the Chairman of the Royal Cabinet, Chief Dan Ulasi, Igwe Orizu III said the disagreement has been settled.

He said: “We have virtually settled the matter. The tension created by the crisis has been reduced to zero. In the next couple of days, the matter will be resolved finally.”

He assured that whatever decision arrived at the meeting would be publicised, and urged both parties to remain calm. The monarch expressed confidence that the settlement of the crisis would go a long way to encourage the development of football in the state.

Meanwhile, Ubah, who embarked on inspection tour of the football club’s stadium in company of the Pillar of Sports in Nigeria, Chief Agu Ejidike and former coach of Golden Eaglets, Mr. Fanny Amu, immediately after the meeting, expressed satisfaction with the level of construction work done so far by the contractors.

  • Revolving door benchmarks FC Ifeanyi ubah’s return

Revolving door benchmarks FC Ifeanyi ubah’s return

For a side that spent a decade in the lower division, Gabros FC eventually became FC Ifeanyiubah and as expected had a fair share of teething problems. They were off to a flier when the Glo Premier League season started. A hundred per cent home record and the issue was that teams could not even score against them at their Nnewi home ground.

However, someday, someone suggested that their Bulgarian trainer Mitko Dobrev was not doing his work well and had to go, especially after a 0-1 home loss to Wikki Tourists. A flurry of managerial changes followed including ex-Super Eagles player and coach Daniel Amokachi being appointed to replace Dobrev after John Obuh held forte for a few weeks.

Later, Obuh resumed in the dugout after Amokachi left unceremoniously and although he tried to keep them head over water, his results never matched those under Dobrev.

    Best performance

In those days, those early days of breathtaking performances, FC Ifeanyiubah ruthlessly took some big teams to the cleaners. Warri Wolves were first on their way and they were trounced 2-0 by the Anambra Warriors. Enyimba as well as Lobi Stars suffered similar fates and while all those could count as impressive showings, none bettered the 4-1 thrashing of El-Kanemi Warriors in Katsina. Maybe it was because it was the team’s first time of using the venue as their ground but it was nonetheless a brilliant performance by the Nnewi-based side. The irony however was that Dobrev who masterminded that victory was sacked shortly after.

    Worst performance

With the managerial door revolving at FC Ifeanyiubah, it was not going to take long before on pitch results reflected it. Or was it the on pitch performances that influenced managerial changes? It was the former. Lowly performing Kwara United got their away win at FC Ifeanyiubah. However their worst performance has to be their 2-0 loss at home to Nasarawa United. An impossibility had it been the FC Ifeanyiubah of the start of the season.

    Player of the season

In those early days of the season, goalkeeper Chidiebere Eze was the standout performer. So good and consistent were his displays that he was invited to the Super Eagles camp. That however was a flash in the pan – another call up never came. It was defender Chibuzor Okonkwo who put up an inspired and consistent performance all through the season. The veteran defender led from the rear and his set piece wizardry came handy time and time again for his side.

  • Ifeanyi Ubah, Sunshine replay at noon

Ifeanyi Ubah, Sunshine replay at noon

The Week 22 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game between Ifeanyi Ubah FC and Sunshine Stars that was postponed as a result of heavy downpour yesterday would be replayed today at the Rojenny International Stadium this morning.

Ifeanyi Ubah versus high riding Sunshine Stars’ tie will come up by 12noon also today at the Rojenny Stadium, Oba in Owerri.

The Chairman of Ifeanyi Ubah FC, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah who personally announced the unveiling of former Super Eagles’ Assistant Coach Daniel Amokachi as the new Technical Adviser of the Club at the Stadium yesterday expressed disappointment for the postponement of the match due to force majouer.

“Its quite unfortunate for not playing today. But there is nothing we can do since it was caused by rain which is force majouer. We will try to beat Sunshine today to move up the ladder. I am confident because we have a very strong technical team that can push this team to where we want it to be.

“We have just appointed Daniel Amokachi as the team’s Technical Adviser while Ike Shorunmu is our new goalkeeper trainer”, Ubah told SportingLife in Oba yesterday.

Among their new signings are defender Emmanuel Olowo and former Lobi Stars defender Ezekiel Bassey (not to be confused with Ezekiel Bassey of Enyimba).

  • The travails of Ifeanyi Uba

    The travails of Ifeanyi Uba

SIR: The on-going trial of fuel subsidy scam bears similarity to the efforts of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to nip in the bud acts that are inimical to the economic well-being of the nation. This development has shown that the proceeds of crime will never bring forth good seeds; neither will the tracks of any such acts be forever covered.

Last week, one of the subsidy fraud suspects, Patrick Ifeanyi Uba was remanded in prison custody on the order of Magistrate Martins Owumi of the Lagos State Magistrate’s Court.

The order was sequel to an affidavit in support of an application for remand sworn to by Chief Superintendent of Police, Francis A. Idu and filed before the court. The court action was sequel to the report of the Presidential Committee on Verification and Reconciliation of Fuel subsidy headed by Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, which President Goodluck Jonathan set up to audit the report of the House of Representatives ad hoc committee on the same subject, headed by Farouk Lawan.

Uba’s Capital Oil and Gas was said to be culpable for fraudulently obtaining N42.291 billion from the Federal Government by falsely pretending that it imported and sold 538.7 million litres of petroleum during the 2011 fiscal year through 26 transactions.

Before now, Uba, like others before him, had endlessly struggled to ‘wash’ his new earned status as one of the nation’s billionaires through acquisition of traditional titles accompanied by excessive celebrations and opulent lifestyle.

Until September 3, 2011, the name hardly rang a bell. However, on his 40th birthday anniversary, the smokescreen was lifted. Well over 100 pages of adverts were plastered in several newspapers to mark the day. The celebration was adjudged to have“broken all tenets of modesty and brought superfluity to walk on all four.”

Interestingly, just one year later, the façade of a nobility and hard working businessman he constructed round himself began to be lifted.

Apart from the current travails, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) listed his company as one of the 113 corporate organizations heavily indebted to banks. The debt profile of Capital Oil is in the region of N48.014 billion, which AMCON said it had “restructured and awaiting performance.”

The fact remains that Uba has made some meaningful contributions in employment generation with the establishment of his oil marketing firm. Its equally noteworthy to mention that his Capital Oil played a notable role in kerosene distribution at a time the cooking fuel was most needed in many homes.

But it should be pointed out to our entrepreneurs that organisations all over the world are imbibing best business practices and good corporate governance that enhance sustainability. This is the way we expect our businessmen to go. His current travails should serve as lessons to all.
