Coalition makes case for Ighodalo’s running mate

The Coalition of Support Groups for Asue Ighodalo said at the weekend that it would be overkill for opposition parties in Edo State if the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, agrees to be the running mate to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo.

The group said Ighodalo already towers above candidates of other parties, showing interest in the race to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki in terms of international connections, intelligence, education, capacity, experience, among other qualities needed to be governor.

At a media chat with reporters, Director General of the group, Mujaidu Bello, said: “It will be a perfect match and a strategic pick if the party considers Osarodion Ogie as a running mate. In fact, it will be overkill for opposition parties if this happens because the campaigns will be a lot easier, and the election can be concluded before the scheduled time.”

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is united and in upbeat mood about winning the forthcoming Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, acting National Chairman, Amb.  Umar Damagum, has said.

Speaking yesterday at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, in Abuja where the PDP National Working Committee presented a certificate of return to former chairman of Sterling Bank, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 577 of the 585 accredited votes to defeat nine other PDP governorship aspirants, Damagum said the party’s national leadership is united and prepared to participate in Ighodalo’s governorship campaign.

“Edo is an easy ride for us, we will emerge victorious; what we should be focused on now is uniting our party and bringing all stakeholders together to ensure we retain our seat at Osadebe Avenue,” Damagun said, adding that the PDP organised and recognised only the primary election held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, which produced Ighodalo as its candidate.

He said Edo State had proved itself to be a PDP territory and its governorship candidate would  need to meet other governorship aspirants who contested for the ticket so that effective reconciliation could put an end to intra-party disagreements.

“We have seen what has happened in other parties; let us not rejoice because they are having their own challenges. We should be more focused on our own challenges and we should be more focused to take that state back to the PDP,” Damagun added.

Speaking after receiving his certificate of return from members of the PDP National Working Committee led by Damagun, Ighodalo urged youths and other aspirants, who took part in the just concluded PDP primary, to set aside any sense of personal injury and support his aspiration in the interest of the party.

The factional governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 21 election in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo, has called for issue-based campaigns from April 24.

He congratulated the standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Monday Okpebholo and the candidate of Labour Party (LP), Olumide Akpata, on their emergence.

Ighodalo, a Lagos-based lawyer, who hails from Ewohimi in Edo Central Senatorial District, restated his belief that Edo’s strength was the unity of its people; pleading with the 16 governorship candidates to refrain from campaigning with messages that promote division and disunity.

He said: “February 2023 general election saw a level of hate and vitriol, masked as political sloganeering that took this nation to the brink; and the fires politicians lit back then continued to smoulder across the nation.

“My team and I will continue to campaign to the people of Edo State in language and behaviour that seek to unite, rather than divide. We will stay focused on the issues that matter to our people; and there will be no descent into abuse, ethnic-baiting and name-calling. We must not destroy the unity of the state we seek to govern.”

APC members in Edo State yesterday protested the results of last Thursday’s fresh governorship direct primary election that was won by the representative of Edo Central, Senator  Okpebholo.

The protesters wanted the representative of Ovia Constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives, Dennis Idahosa, to be declared the winner of the keenly-contested primary election.

Leader of the protesters, Harrison Okpamen, said the shadow poll that produced Idahosa as the candidate of APC in Edo was authentic.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Edo State Asue Ighodalo was yesterday elected as governorship candidate for the November 12 poll.

But, as at press time, the collation of results for the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary had not started.

Ighodalo polled 577 votes to beat other aspirants-Anselm Ojezua, Arthur Esele, Osaro Onaiwu, Martins Uhomoibhi, Hadizat Umoru and  Felix Akhabue, who scored zero.

Deputy Governor Shaibu scored one vote at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin while six votes were declared void.

Former House of Representatives member Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama stepped down for Ighodalo.

There were 585 accredited delegates at the venue.

The primary was monitored by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials.

The Chief Returning Officer of the Edo PDP Governorship Primary Election Committee, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State announced Ighodalo as candidate.

He said: “By the powers vested in me by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, pursuant to the Constitution of our great party, the PDP, as the Chief Returning Officer of the 2024 Edo PDP Primary Election, I hereby declare Asue Ighodalo as the winner of the primary election with a total vote of 577.

Lawal was assisted by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator James Manager, who were the Vice Chairman and Secretary  of the committee.

Ighodalo thanked Obaseki and the people of the state for their love and support.

He said the governor laid the foundation for him to build upon, adding that he will appoint youths into his government,  if elected.

He said: “I want to thank you for making me a tool, and I promise you that I will be a useful tool, and by the grace of God, Edo State will move from where Obaseki has carried us, to the next level.

“I want to thank Obaseki for the wonderful work he has done in the last seven and a half years. I know that in a year or two, people will keep talking about Obaseki. We have not seen the value of the work he has done, but he is like a builder laying the foundation for a hundred story building.

“No man is perfect. We will all  continue to repair and work on one another’s mistakes.”

Welcoming delegates to the stadium,  Obaseki said: “Today, we are going through an exercise that has been stipulated by our party. Even though it is statutory, the exercise will be life-changing because Nigeria is going through difficult times and we can only overcome the challenges we are facing as a Country with the right leadership.

“If we in Edo do not begin to show the right leadership that will begin to reset Nigeria, God forbid, we may all be in trouble. PDP is the only party that has what it takes to rule this country. Again, we are showing the example in the way we are conducting our leadership selection process.”

However, the  crisis over the  governorship nomination escalated as Shaibu claimed that he was elected as candidate in  parallel primary.

He was declared winner at another primary held at his official residence in Benin with 301 of the 563 delegates’ votes.

Shaibu, in his acceptance speech, dedicated his victory to God Almighty, his teeming supporters, and the people of Edo.

Court declines request to stop PDP primary

A Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday  declined to grant an order to stop the PDP from conducting the primary.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in rulings on two ex-parte applications, ordered the applicants to put the PDP on notice for the party to attend court on the next date to show cause why the request by the applicants should not been granted.

The first, marked: FHC /ABJ /CS/ 195/2024 was filed by Adizetu Hadizat Audrey Abosede Adunni Umoru, while the second, marked: FHC /ABJ /CS/ 196/2024 was jointly filed by Moses Adomokha Alabi and Christopher Ebode Oboarere.

Listed as respondents in both suits are – Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), PDP, Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, Setonji Koshoedo, the National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP.

In  their applications dated and filed February 19  the applicants want an interim order restraining the defendants from using the list of ward congresses held on February 4, for the purpose of conducting the primary.

Akpata made the accusation in his petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said: “The purpose of this letter is to bring to your attention the lack of preparedness and transparency surrounding the Labour Party’s planned primaries to produce a gubernatorial candidate for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State.

“The complete opacity around the party’s primaries preparations points to a lack of readiness to conduct any credible process that can stand legal scrutiny. Moreso, the reluctance to carry aspirants along fuels fears that the eventual primaries outcome may have been predetermined, regardless of any phantom congress and the primaries conducted, to rubber stamp a fabricated result.

“If things go awry, it could result in pre-election disputes, to which INEC will inevitably be joined as a necessary party, thereby tying down its already meagre resources, and leaving the commission to grapple with yet another unnecessary and avoidable dispute that could have been averted had the right thing been done and the warning signs heeded.”

  • I’m the unifier for Edo PDP, says Ighodalo

I’m the unifier for Edo PDP, says Ighodalo

Asue Ighodalo, a lawyer, is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State. In this interview with reporters in Benin City, the state capital, he speaks about his aspiration to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki. Southsouth Bureau Chief BISI OLANIYI reports.

What motivated you to leave your comfort zone, from certainty to uncertainty?

I will not lie to you, it was a tough decision. Not because of the certainty and uncertainty, but coming from a comfort zone that puts you in the forefront of corporate leadership and looking at that comfort zone, the corporate strength, and the corporate foresight, and you put all of that down to say you want to do good for your people, it is a tough decision, but if your love for your people supersedes your interest, and it is not a cliche, there’s no company in which I sit on the board that employs 5.2 million people. Edo State has 5.2 million people. So, as the governor of Edo State, I can positively impact the lives of 5.2 million residents. No company affects people directly. So, I can do many things for many more people. I have been blessed by God Almighty.

In all honesty, if as a human being, you are thinking of legacy, you have been blessed, and some of those blessings, you must put to use, especially in an environment where many others are not so blessed.

How ready are you to navigate the murky waters of politics, considering your coming from the private sector to the public sector?

Who plays politics? Are they men and women like you and me? Do they bleed if you catch them? Are they human beings or spirits? Honestly, I think in a way, our politicians have been slightly misunderstood. I think we all need to put a lot more focus. What we all need to do, and I tell people at the party level, we need to force our politicians to choose the best among them. So, if we have four or five parties, each party chooses the best, it does not matter who we all then select, the person will be good for us, but what we have seen over time is that for some reason, we do not choose the most capable. So, it is not the fault of the politicians alone, it is also the fault of us the citizens who have not worked on our politicians to choose the most capable.

Are you not worried about the crisis in the PDP in Edo State?

I truly see myself as the unifier for the PDP, and I can put myself in a position where everybody should be able to trust me. I know some people are carrying so much rumour that he is this person’s candidate; he is that person’s candidate. Still, by the grace of God Almighty, I am nobody’s candidate, but I am not going to be shouting and arguing it with anybody. I will allow my person, my character, the way I approach issues and the way I speak to work for me. In my work so far, I have tried to interact with every political leader in the PDP in Edo state. I am still going to see a few that I have not seen. My story to them is this, we cannot allow ourselves to continue making the same mistakes; a divided PDP lost the national elections in 2023, and lost the national elections in 2015.

If we love the people of Edo State, and we want the PDP to provide continuous service and development for Edo State, the only way the PDP can win is to come together as one party. My focus is to unify the party. Where there are disagreements, we are all sisters or brothers, if we love the people of Edo State, there should be no ego. We should be able to forgive one another, forget what has gone past look forward to the future and work for the future and work for the people of Edo State. That is the message that I am bringing.

We cannot afford to continue to make the same mistakes, because of ego. The PDP loves the people, it is the vocal, strong party, it is a party of the people, and so we always make that count.

So, I am working at making sure we come together as one people, as one party for the betterment of the people of the state. We just need to bridge a few gaps and cross a few distrust points, and it is not that difficult. If there is a sense of purpose, there is a trustworthy perspective, and if people can forgive and everybody needs to give and take, there must never be a win-win, there must be give and take, and people must be ready to respect one another’s views. If we come from that perspective, I do not see a problem. We will keep working on it.

You have been in government in Edo State since 2008; if elected, what would be your priority?

My priority will be those policies of this government and of previous governments that worked well. I will focus on them like the civil service reforms, agriculture and investment attraction. I will continue to ensure that those things they are doing that made them work well, I will continue. I will also immediately focus on those things that do not appear to have worked well; infrastructure, particularly roads, the problem with roads in Edo State is very peculiar, and to an extent unfortunate. We have a lot of bad federal roads in Edo State, and because of the pressure and the badness of the federal roads, many heavy vehicles are using the state roads, so they put pressure on those roads. One of the things we will do is to find effective ways to ensure that our federal roads get effectively repaired. This will reduce the pressure on state roads.

I will also pay attention and continue the works of the present government on the issue of industrialisation and opening up the economy on a digital perspective and digital scale. One thing that has worried me is the fact that the level of poverty in the state is rather high. So, we will look at those things we need to do to drive our people out of poverty, from an agricultural perspective, from small and medium-scale enterprises perspective, and from a trade perspective. So, we will ensure that our people are brought out of poverty, which is critically fundamental. Water and electricity are essential. Security has improved greatly in Edo State, I will continue ensuring, working with the federal government, and working with our local security providers to ensure that we have a safe state, where every man and woman is safe, where our investments are safe, and where we can travel from one place to another in safety and where we can go to our farms in safety. If we have that environment, Edo State is ready to go.

Read Also: Tinubu to University unions: prioritise dialogue to avoid frequent strikes

We will also try and ensure that we create an enabling environment; the way Governor Obaseki has been able to attract investments, particularly in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, and other parts of the state. We will ensure most definitely that we drive investments. We will ensure that the investments are appropriated by various local governments in Edo State.

At this moment, I am working on doing a study on economic and social study on the comparative advantage of each local government, and we will enhance that comparative advantage and be sure that the appropriate economies, appropriate corporate and appropriate businesses and appropriate agricultural-based industries from those comparative advantages are there to enhance them.

How do you hope to get the resources to do all that you have outlined?

When I look at the total balance sheet of Edo State, I can understand sometimes why we have difficulty in doing some of the things we need to do. But, you know, if you look at Governor Obaseki’s value for money, things he achieved in fairness to him, regardless of what other criticisms they have about him, and the administration, you will see value for money, and that goes to show how he has been able to use his economic and financial mind to stretch small money into big projects.

I do not have any problem with stretching money or borrowing money, the issue is what you use the borrowed money for. If you borrow money for capital expenditure, that is not a problem. If you use borrowed money for wasteful and recurrent expenditure, that is the problem. The problem we have had as a country is that a lot of times, we use earned money, and borrowed money on wasteful recurrent expenditure. So, I am clear in mind that we will borrow money, and Edo State can borrow money, but for proper capital expenditure that will build value and create an economy as the first world economy. We will create an Edo State that attracts even more investment sources, to strengthen the base of our economy and bring direct investment flow.

In lifting people out of poverty, we will create a taxable base, not increasing taxes. We will create a wider taxable base, more people that can pay tax. We need to create a wider tax if people are not earning, they cannot pay tax. But, if there is economic rejuvenation, people can then pay tax. One of the major sources of inflow to our state is remittances from the Diaspora. We will make them more committed to their remittances. We will create an environment in which they will not send money for family upkeep, but they will send money for investments so that they can diversify their investment pool.

I see light, shining light; I see prospects; and I see glory. Let us just take palm products, if we continue working on research, which we are working on, in the next few years, Edo will top palm production in Africa and in six to seven years, we will be competing for number one in the world. That is just one. So, if we look at every area of investment, where we have a comparative advantage, we will build something.

What are your plans for the youths of Edo State?

In my law office, and in every place that I have worked, my commitment to the development of youths is first class. In Edo State, we will have a government that consists of a large chunk of youths, because they have the energy, they have the new wisdom, the new intellect and they are for the future. A majority of my cabinet members, my advisers and those who will work with me will be younger people, and we will work together as a strong team. They will bring their creativity and a new way of doing things. If you see what is happening in the world today, it is the youths that are driving the economy. We must not make them lose hope in our country, and our state, because it is the loss of hope that is making them to Japa (relocate overseas). So, we will make them stay here. The youths form the fulcrum of our government. Edo State is ready to take off.

Edo Guber: Ighodalo gets PDP clearance to contest primary

Edo governorship aspirant Dr Asue Ighodalo has been officially cleared by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)to contest the governorship election primaries holding in the State soon.

The aspirant obtained his clearance on Tuesday amid agitation and alleged gang-up by some party leaders and fellow aspirants bent on pushing him out of the contest.

Edo governorship election has been scheduled to hold on September 21, 2024.

Since the show of interests and lobbying, some forces within the PDP family have kicked against the choice of Ighodalo. Their arguments were either that he was an anointed candidate of Governor Godwin Obaseki or he was not a member of the PDP.

Despite their argument on Ighodalo’s membership of the party, some  members encouraged him to push on.

They argued that Section 50 of the 2017 PDP Constitution as amended allows a member of the party who has been registered for a month to contest for elections or primaries under the flag of the party.

Some reports have alleged a likely gang-up against Ighodalo during the screening.

It is alleged that the gang-up was masterminded by some top PDP leaders in the State and those loyal to them nick-named the Legacy PDP.

Another report had also claimed that  eight governorship aspirants from the PDP in the State had United against Ighodalo.

The candidates had argued that he was not qualified to contest as he allegedly joined the party in May 2023.

But Ighodalo’s supporters quickly dismissed this with Section 50 of the PDP Constitution which says an individual can join the party and contest as long as he had been a member for a month before the primary.

The screening of aspirants, which took place at the national secretariat in Abuja, held despite the agitation by nine other aspirants seeking to block Ighodalo.

“Even though they have failed in this one, we have information that they are looking at other options to drag him down.

“He seems to be like Joseph who his brothers continued to plot against and he always ended up being thier saving grace,” one of his supporters said.
