  • Opposition parties protest against Police chief Jan 15

Opposition political parties under the auspices of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) have decided to embark on a nationwide protest January 15 against the continued stay in office of the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris.

Going by his service records, IGP was due to retire on January 3, 2019, marking his mandatory 35 years in the service of the Nigeria Police Force.

Idris will also clock the mandatory retirement age of 60 years on January 15.

The extant rule specified that public servants must retire after 35 years in service, or on attainment of 60 years of age, whichever comes first.

However, there are no indications that Idris was preparing for retirement as President Muhammadu Buhari is rumoured to be favourably disposed to extending his tenure.

But in a statement Sunday by spokesman for the CUPP, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the opposition said the planned protest is to save the country from drifting further into the abyss.

The statement said: “It is flowing from this and to save our dear country from further drift from a government that lacks capacity to provide leadership to our country that the Secretariat of CUPP hereby directs all coalition members in the 36 states to begin preparation for nationwide protests from 15th January if the retired IGP is seen dressed in police uniform around the Force Headquarters.

“The protests will be in front of the Police Command headquarters of every state and shall be continuous till the right thing is done.

“During the protests, there shall be a declaration that since Mr. Ibrahim Idris is no longer a police officer, he cannot be addressed as IGP and a call to him to stay clear of the Force Headquarters.

“By the 15th January, Mr. Ibrahim Idris would have attained both 35 years (Jan 3rd 2019) in service and 60 years of age (Jan 15 2019) and he would have been roundly unqualified to occupy the office of the Inspector General of Police”.

The Coalition said President Buhari should be held personally responsible for breakdown of law and order or loss of lives and property during the protest.

It called on the President to appoint a serving police officer to replace Idris as Inspector General of Police, as required by the 1999 Constitution.

  • Police warns Saraki against interfering with investigation

The Police Wednesday expressed shock over the allegation made by the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki that the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Ibrahim Idris is plotting against him.

The Police said the claim was an attempt to divert the Police investigation into the killings of more than 11 innocent people from kwara State and other States of the Federation by the killer squad who operate under the guise of a cult group.

The Police also warned Saraki not to interfere with investigation noting that attempt to do so is an offence.

The Police while trying to defend its action of transferring the case highlighted some cases that were transferred from State commands to the Force headquarters.

It also explained that the transfer was in accordance with Police investigation procedures adding that the IGP had no vested interest in the case.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by the Force Spokesman, ACP Jimoh Moshood.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to Press Statement credited to the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki of  “Plot against him by IGP”.

“The Nigeria Police Force is shocked at the unbelievable claims, unverifiable allegations and unfounded accusations being peddled against the IGP by the Senate President, accusing the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris of plot and strategies against him to settle scores.

“The Force therefore wishes to categorically state that, there is no iota of truth in the allegation and false assertion by the Senate President of plot against him by the IGP to implicate the Kwara State Government and the Senate President in any criminal matter.

“Until investigation is concluded, any person (s) or group(s) who tries to interfere in the investigation process by action or utterances is committing an offence.”

    Giving more insight about the suspects mentioned by the Senate President, the police said:  “To set the records straight, the Kwara State Police Command on the 11th of May, 2018, paraded the following suspects before the Media and the Public, namely;

On why the case was transferred to the Force Headquarters, Moshood said: “Consequent upon the public confessions of these vicious and notorious killer squad to the killings in cold blood of more than 11 innocent people in Kwara State and other States of the Federation, the statutory procedure and practice in the Force is that such a heinous crime and capital offence is transferred to the Force Headquarters for further investigation.

“This is to enable a thorough and discreet investigation into the crime.”

On whether the IGP has any special interest in the case, the statement stated: “It is pertinent to state that, there is no vested interest by the Inspector General of Police in the ongoing investigation into the several murders committed by this killer gang, other than ensuring that justice prevails in the matter.

“Therefore, transferring this hired assassin gang masquerading as cultists in kwara State to Force Headquarters, Abuja for further investigation is in accordance with Police investigation procedures.”

The Police said the statement credited to the Senate President can discourage living victims and deceased families of those who must have been killed by the gang from coming forward to give evidence against them.

  • IGP Idris was invited by Senate because of Dino Melaye – Police

The Nigeria Police Force has alleged  that the Inspector-General of Police ( IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris was invited by the Senate because of Sen. Dino Melaye and not the killings across the country as claimed.

The senate at plenary recently, declared the IGP as enemy of democracy and unfit to hold any public office within and outside the country for failing to honour its invitation thrice.

The senate had refused the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in-charge of operations and other senior police officers to represent the IGP when he was invited on April 26.

“The recent claim by the Senate that the reason for inviting the IGP is to brief them on the recent killings in some part of the Country is an afterthought which can be seen from the headings of their invitation letters”, ACP Jimoh Moshood, police spokesman said in Abuja on Saturday.

Moshood said that if the invitation was for him to brief the senate on strategies adopted in tackling killings in the country, it would not have been planned for a national television.

“The Senate’s action to cover the appearance of the IGP on National Television is against National Security, unconventional and it negates global security practice,”he said.

The spokesman said that the letter the senate wrote inviting the IGP clearly showed that the invitation was not about the killings but about Dino.

“From the headings of the invitation letters, it is very clear that the IGP was invited on those occasions by the Senate purposely because of Senator Dino Melaye’s criminal indictment,”he said.

Moshood said that the purported list of killings in Nigerian this year by the senate, was shocking, unfortunate and capable of worsening the security situation in the country.

“It is mischievous and heinous to play politics with people’s lives; even if it is a soul.

“The release is speculative and not supported by any fact. Office of the Senate President does not receive or process security report from State commands,”he said.
He said that the Force as a law abiding entity would continue to uphold the rule of law in all its ramifications.

“The Force insists on due process of the law and once again implores the Senate not to whip-up sentiments or resort to self-help but to allow the rule of law and justice to prevail on the whole matter, “he said.
