We’ve arrested 53 suspects over Benue, Plateau killings – IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday disclosed that no fewer than 53 suspects have been arrested in connection with the recent wave of deadly attacks in massacre at Yelewata community, in Benue and Plateau States that claimed dozens of lives and left several others injured and displaced.

Egbetokun, who briefed reporters at the Force Headquarters, Abuja said 26 were arrested for the attack in Yelewata, 22 suspects in connection with the Plateau incident and another five in Benue.

IGP said 47 persons were killed and 27 were injured in the Yelewata attack, adding that two general-purpose machine guns and eight AK-47 rifles used in the attack were recovered.

The Benue arrest is coming barely a week after President Bola Tinubu directed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, to immediately arrest killer herders who perpetrated the heinous killing of over 100 people in Yelewata community in Benue State.

Tinubu gave the directive while addressing stakeholders at the Government House, Makurdi.

The meeting included the Secretary to the Federal Government, George Akume, Traditional Rulers, and former Governors of the state.

The governors of Kwara, Imo, Kogi, Plateau, Ondo, and Nasarawa also attended the meeting.

Tinubu had called out the Inspector General of Police to know why arrests have not been made.

“How come no one has been arrested for committing this heinous crime in Yelewata. Inspector General of Police, where are the arrests? The criminals must be arrested immediately,” Tinubu said.

He urged the heads of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to intensify surveillance and gather actionable intelligence to apprehend the perpetrators.

Sources said security agencies have been working round the clock to arrest the perpetrators.

Egbetokun said: “As we all recall, on June 13, 2025, between the hour of 23.30 and the hour of 23.40, two militias invaded the Eluwata community in the Manuka Province area of Benue State, killing and maiming any soul on sight. The invaders rampaged and pillaged the community, setting several houses ablaze and maliciously destroying other properties and properties of livelihoods.

“It was a coordinated attack of terror against the community. In this senseless barbaric attack, 47 persons were confirmed killed. 27 persons sustained various degrees of injuries, while hundreds others have been displaced but not dead.

“The police and other security agencies responded with adequate deployment of personnel and resources, including the deployment of tactical units and special forces to restore confidence in the affected community and neighboring communities. Also immediately deployed were detectives from our intelligence response team, who swung into action, launching a manhunt for the perpetrators of this heinous crime. I am pleased to inform you here today that 26 persons directly connected to this crime have so far been arrested and their weapons recovered.”

Explaining how the suspects were arrested, Egbetokun said two prime suspects were nabbed on June 19 from their hideout, adding that the prime suspects helped the police to arrest seven other suspects.

He said: “On June 19, two prime suspects who were masterminds of this attack were apprehended from their hideout. This arrest led to the arrest of seven other suspects the following day, 2006-2005. They were picked up from their previous locations, where they had fled, hoping to evade justice.

“On 21 June, another key suspect, in whose house the pressure meeting to plan the attack was held, was also arrested. On 22 June, a major breakthrough was recorded with the arrest of 18 other suspects, who directly took part in the killings. On 23 June, our detectives recovered two general-purpose machine guns and eight AK-47 rifles, which were part of the weapons used during the attack.”

Egbetokun said all the 26 suspects arrested in connection with the Yelewata attack are in custody and had confessed to the crime.

The police boss said: “All 26 suspects are currently in custody and have voluntarily confessed to their individual and collective roles in this attack. As I speak, legal proceedings have been finalised and they will be arranged by a court without delay. We will go after anyone, planner or executor, who attacks any community in Nigeria.”

The IGP also disclosed that 22 persons have been arrested in connection with the June 22 mob attack in Mangu, Plateau State passengers traveling from Zaria were brutally killed.

He said: “Similarly, on 22 June, 2025, a heart-breaking incident occurred in Mangu Plateau State, where a bus conveying passengers from Zaria was stopped and attacked by a mob. Tragically, nine of the passengers were murdered and three sustained injuries before our teams could intervene and rescue the remaining 22 victims.

“So far, 22 suspects have also been arrested in connection with this gruesome act of mob violence. These two will face the full rights of the law in court. “

He further revealed the arrest of five persons in Makurdi, Benue State capital, for their alleged involvement in the killing of two truck travelers in the Agan area on June 23.

Egbetokun said:”Again, yesterday, 23 June, 2025, another ugly incident was recorded in Benue State, where two persons travelling in a truck were killed at Agan area, North Bank, Makurdi.

“Five persons connected to this crime have also been arrested and will also be made to face the full weight of the law. “

Decrying the trends of reprisal attacks in the country, the IGP warned that the police would leave no stone unturned to arrest perpetrators.

He called on Nigerians to reject violence and embrace peace regardless of ethnic or religious affiliations.

Egbetokun said, “The recent trend of repressor killings, where innocent citizens are murdered in retaliation for crimes committed by others, is barbaric, senseless, and dangerous. It does not bring justice.

“We will go after anyone, planner or executor, who attacks any community in Nigeria. We will leave no stone unturned until justice is served”.

Smear campaign against IGP won’t stop police reforms — CASA

The Civic Alliance for Security Accountability (CASA) has strongly condemned what it calls a coordinated campaign of calumny against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, urging Nigerians to disregard all unfounded attacks on his person and leadership.

In a statement released on Friday, President of CASA, Charles Egbunike, described the attacks as part of a broader agenda to discredit not just the IGP, but also President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, under whose administration Egbetokun was appointed.

“These campaigns are not only malicious but deliberately designed to create instability,” Egbunike said. “Those behind them are not just attacking the IGP; they are using him as a tool to hit the President. This is because of the IGP’s long-standing association with President Tinubu, dating back to when he served as his Chief Security Officer during Tinubu’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State more than two decades ago.”

According to the group, the real masterminds of the smear campaign are disgruntled elements who lost out following the IGP’s recent reforms aimed at sanitising the system, especially his decision to implement the position of the law and the Police Service Commission on retirement age and service years.

These individuals, who are angry over the unalloyed support Egbetokun enjoys from the President and the members of the Nigeria Police Force, he said, are now collaborating with unscrupulous figures in the online media space who had been paid to do a hatchet job.

“These individuals prospered under a corrupt system and are now resentful because Inspector General Egbetokun has put an end to that era of impunity and unprofessional conduct.

“They are using faceless online platforms and questionable media outlets to spread lies and cast doubt on the IGP’s credibility.

“Very soon, we will start revealing the people behind this campaign, including a retired senior police officer who is unhappy about the way he left office.

“We will also expose those paying for online attacks meant to weaken the police and, by extension, the government.

“This is not just an attack on one man; it is an attempt to undermine national security. We will not let that happen,” Egbunike said.

Meanwhile, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Idris Dauda Dabban, has described IGP Egbetokun as a truly professional, hardworking, humble and forward-thinking officer whose leadership is shaping a more disciplined and professional Nigerian Police Force, advising those who are attacking him for their selfish reasons to desist from it.

Speaking in an interview, AIG Dabban (rtd), who was a course mate of Egbetokun at the Police Academy and later served closely with him, gave personal insights into the character and work ethics of the country’s top cop.

“IGP Egbetokun is a very humble, selfless, courageous and hardworking officer” Dabban said.

“He’s someone who listens, interacts well with people, and genuinely cares about getting the job done.”

Their connection goes way back, not just as course mates but also as close colleagues posted to the same units and living in the same police barracks.

According to Dabban, that experience gave him a front-row view of the IGP’s drive, care for the people and passion for duty.

“After we left the academy, we were both posted back to Lagos. We served in the same unit and even lived in the same barracks at Satellite Police Barrack. I can confidently say I know him very well,” Dabban recalled.

“He’s always ahead, very proactive, never reactive. He doesn’t tolerate anything that goes against the ethics of the Force. He’s very forward-looking, passionate about the job and holds himself and others to high standards. I can say Nigerians are lucky to have this kind of incorruptible cop as their IGP.

“He’s a nationalist. He is never tribalistic or considers religious sentiment. For him, it’s all about the job; work, work, and more work. He’s fully committed to building a better police force that I am certain about.”

Speaking in a similar vein, a serving Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media, praised IGP Egbetokun for the positive changes he is bringing to the Force.

According to the serving AIG, Egbetokun is not only a strong leader but also a highly educated officer who brings deep knowledge and discipline into policing.

He said: “One thing I admire most about the IGP is his work ethic. He drives his subordinates hard because he believes in results. Laziness and unprofessional conduct have no place under his leadership.

“He leads from the front; he works round the clock, comes to the office early, spends more than 14 hours in the office daily, and I also know that most days, he does not go to bed until 4 am, because he continues with meetings and works at home.

“I marvel at how he attends to the deluge of work and files on his table, and he does all of that with vigour and professionalism.”
