…Afenifere, Ohanaeze, middle belt, Northern elders condemn raid

The Abuja residence of the Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark was raided Tuesday by the police.

The Police men, numbering six, it was learnt came from the office of the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris.

They were from the IGP’s ‘Special Tactical Force’ STF, Guzape, Abuja, which reports only to the Inspector- General of Police.

The 91-old former federal commissioner was at home when the police came calling at about 12.30, in a 18- Seater Hiace Bus and a four Runner Car, with registration number EU 979 ABC.

Clark, No 43, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro residence was turned inside out as the police searched for about two hours without finding anything incriminating.

The Police men were led by Kolo Yusuf, said that they were with a Search warrant that was obtained from the court.

Speaking after the incident, Chief Clark said, “I was in the house, in my bedroom when my boys came to inform me that there were police men downstairs and in the parlour, I said what do they want, they said they came from Inspector- General of Police, IGP Tactical Squad with a warrant and with their office in Guzape, So I said what do you want?

“They said I was selling weapons in my house so that’s why they went to court to obtain a search warrant and they showed me the search warrant, I said, go ahead. So they went down,  searched everywhere, my most important part of it, my secretary, Miss Dorothy Koko  was in the bank, they said they must see that room and her bedroom and the office. So she had to come from the bank to open those rooms for them to search. Then after they came up, searched my wife’s room, my children’s room, my other parlor upstairs and everywhere, this is what happened.”

On whether the Police at the end of the day discovered arms and Ammunition, Chief Clark said, “They didn’t find anything; they made a statement that they’ve come here with a warrant to search the house for ammunition, but they have searched the house they found nothing and they themselves took away nothing. Three of my people signed it and three of them signed it that’s what happened.”

When asked if the search could be related to last week’s meeting of Elders and Leaders of various socio- cultural groups in the country, Chief Clark said, “I believe because of the various meetings we’ve been holding about the state of the nation, otherwise why would they expect, am not in Delta where I come from, that militants have come to keep ammunition in my house, but no sensible man will think that a 92 year old man in Abuja, will be keeping ammunition in his house to fight the government, overthrow the government, this is ridiculous, shameful.

“I am not saying that people don’t keep arms, but am not that kind of person, I speak my mind on issues affecting this country, I believe in advocacy, I believe in peace. When our boys, calling themselves avengers and so on, vandalized  pipelines, I formed an organization known as Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF to stop these boys and I led about 100 people including leaders, traditional rulers, everybody.

“Since then, there have been peace in the Niger Delta, oil production has increased, is that why I should be treated like this, perhaps this is the time I should mention, it has been the policy of the federal government, the presidency to congratulate Nigerians who have attained certain age, I attained the age of 91 on the 25th of May this year.

“What I said earlier on, was that I am a man of peace, I believe in peaceful coexistence in this country, I have been doing everything possible to see that Nigeria remains one that’s why we’ve been forming various organisations to keep Nigeria together. I started PANDEF on the 19th of August 2016 to advice the youths who were vandalizing pipelines, to stop them from vandalizing pipelines.

“Oil production in Nigeria which had gone down low to about 900 barrels per day has increased to over 2 million, everybody knows that. I have led meetings with Mr. President, with our people, I led a total number of 100 traditional rulers, politicians, past governors to meet with the President on the 1st of November 2016, I was looking for peace, but nobody can stop me from speaking my mind or associating with people to see that there is good governance in this country.”

“It is dangerous to say where we are going, we are moving into a police state.  What worries me is that those who are surrounding Mr. President,  I do not think they wish him well with the way they are going, President Buhari  is the President of the whole Nigeria, not one part of this country. I do not think with his greatest respect and having honored my late friend, Alhaji Maitama Sule, I do not think one police man whether IG would have gone to kano to search his house, Why this type of discrimination, it is very unfair.”

“I will never, I said it is my top slogan that when you are 70 and above, you are at the Lounge, waiting for your boarding Pass,  I would say I have gotten my Boarding pass, but God has delayed it, NOBODY can do me anything, I will speak my mind on anything that is unjust in this country, against injustice, against oppression, discrimination, religious  bigotry, ethnicity anything that will affect the unity of this country, peace, peaceful existence of this country I will speak against it.

The elder statesman has not ruled out taking a legal action against the government and the police as he noted that, “My lawyers will look into that.”

The Policemen on arrival demanded to see the Secretary to Chief Clark, Dorothy Koko who had gone to the bank as that the time they came, even as they requested that they must see her and at this time, a call was made to her to come back to the office which she did immediately.

According to the source, when Dorothy Koko arrived, the policemen asked her to open her office, she did, they searched, thereafter went to her bedroom and toilet to search for everything, even as the rooms were turned upside down.

The source said further that soon after they finished with Dorothy Koko, the Police men now climbed up to Chief Clark’s bed room where they also carried out a search in his room, the toilet, his wife’s room, the Children’s room, al, the parlours, among other places.

At the end of the two hour exercise of putting the residence of Clark into such traumatic and horrifying situation, the Police men left without finding anything incriminating against the Elder Statesman.

Three Police men were said to have signed a legal document indicating that neither arm nor ammunition was found in the house of Chief Clark or anything incriminating, while three persons from the side of Clark also signed the document before they took it to the office.

Those who signed on behalf of Chief Clark were Ambassador Godknows Igali; Secretary General of Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, Dr. Alfred Mulade and Mr. Mac Emakpore.

Reaction has continued to trail the invasion as Nigerian Leaders and Elders Forum expresses shock over the incident. The Afenifere, Ohanaeze, Middle Belt Forum and Northern Elders forum strongly condemned the police.

In a joint statement by the groups, the police action was described as shameful.

The statement was signed by Yinka Odumakin, Prof Chigozie Ogbu, Dr Isuwa Dogo  and   Dr Junaid Mohammed.

The statement reads: “The Nigerian Leaders and Elders Forum is flabbergasted by the gestapo-like raid on the  Abuja home of 91-year -old elder-statesman and Leader of Pan-Niger Delta Forum(PANDEF) ,Chief EK Clark by men of the Nigerian Police on the spurious allegation  that there were “arms and ammunition” stockpiled in the house.

“At the end of the shameful invasion of the home of the former Minister and Senator in the worst signal of Nigeria becoming a police state, the police could not find more than a kitchen knife regularly used to slice tomato and onion.

“We view the provocative search as not arising from any intelligence report but a sheer act of intimidation on a home that has served as meeting point for patriots across Nigeria who are engaged in peaceful consultations to save Nigeria from the edge of the precipice.

The raid is a sad reminder of the era of full blown dictatorship in 1984 when the home of Chief Obafemi Awolowo was ransacked in Ikenne by solders and officials of the dreaded NSO whose conduct has only been rivaled by the DSS under Daura before he was removed when the President was on vacation abroad.

“The traumatization of Pa Clark at 91 is yet another proof that mad power has taken over our polity and its desperation now walking on four with all boundaries of decency collapsed for raw display of beastly tendencies.

The Nigerian Leaders and Elders Forum demands an immediate apology to Chief Clark by the Nigerian Police whose leadership at the moment has shown serial unprofessionalism and dark age policing.

“We want to sound it loud and clear to the administration that if the object of this intimidation is to send fear signals to patriots who are demanding better leadership for our country ,it has backfired .We all counted the cost before we chose to embark on standing up for the country
Our battle cry remains : no retreat, no surrender !”

Ijaw leader slams group for pressurising Buhari

An Ijaw leader, Chief Wilfred Ogbotobo, has criticised members of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), saying they lacked the authority to discuss with President Muhammadu Buhari on Niger Delta development.

Ogbotobo, who spoke in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, said the body comprised people who had opportunities to develop the region, but built empires for themselves and their children with public funds.

Alleging that PANDEF members were agents of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) masquerading as Niger Delta leaders, he said they were on a familiar mission to blackmail the Buhari administration to shortchange the zone.

Ogbotobo said: “There is no need for further dialogue on the same issues relating to the same development and well-being of the same Niger Delta. We have had enough of the same characters, dialogues, blueprints and roadmaps on this same Niger Delta.

“These individuals and groups should, in their own interest, spare President Buhari the distractions of their unproductive and time wasting dialogues, as he cannot afford to fail in the challenges confronting critical sectors of the nation.

“Hence, we welcome and praise President Buhari’s timely recognition of this snare, and his boldness in providing a significant budgetary allocation to fight crime and stop a breakdown of law and order in the zone. This is the hallmark of a disciplined, responsible leadership.”

The Ijaw leader said Buhari was conversant with the developmental challenges of the Niger Delta and should dialogue with “local rocket scientists” to implement his plans for the region.

He said the President demonstrated his readiness to develop the zone, alleging that PANDEF leaders were the same PDP chieftains, who threatened fire and brimstone against Buhari during the campaign.

“Their political profiles will reveal how many opportunities they have had in the course of their political development, to better the region, but which they squandered on selfishness and frivolity.

“Nothing meaningful can come out of a dialogue with these same individuals and groups anymore. Nobody should listen to them. They are not the only people in the Niger Delta.

“We, therefore, urge the public to be more discerning and not to be deceived by these barefaced lies and hypocritical shenanigans of individuals and groups whose activities are akin to a set of spent clowns on a time worn circus.

“These antecedents and antics are no longer fashionable and are out of tune with the present enlightenment and realities in the zone,” Ogbotobo said.

He said PANDEF leaders had destroyed the legacies of genuine leaders of the Niger Delta struggle like the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, through their competition for individual survival.

His words: “President Buhari needs no further schooling or dialogue on the economic value and social importance of the Brass Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project and a modern seaport in Bayelsa State; as well as his knowledge of the strategic value of the Maritime University to the people.

“So, the wrong strategy of confrontation and destruction of sensitive national economic infrastructure and assets should be discarded, for the restoration of law and order.

“We urge the Federal Government to be focused and committed to the delivery of democracy dividends to the Niger Delta.

“President Buhari should go deeper, beyond this ring of hypocrites, to collaborate with the people, identify and groom a fresh breed of committed, young leaders who should be empowered to provide robust leadership for the salvation and survival of the Niger Delta.”

    Ijaw leader lambasts Dokubo-Asari

Prominent Ijaw youth leader and Niger Delta activist, Famous Daunemigha has asked his compatriot, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, to stop inciting youths against the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

He told Asari-Dokubo to join other former militants to work with the nation’s new leadership.

Daunemuagha was the Bayelsa State governorship candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011 and is known for arresting and handing over to the police some of the thugs who stoned Buhari in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, during the 2011 presidential campaign.

Daunemigha, who was the Vice-President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) when Asari-Dokubo was the President of the council, said the former militant leader’s recent ranting was empty because the region would no longer be a battleground for his selfish benefit.

On the hue and cry over the December deadline for the Presidential Amnesty granted Niger Delta former militants, the youth leader said former Dr Goodluck Jonathan was President for six years but could not review the date.

He said the IYC, which faulted the deadline, also failed to mount pressure on Jonathan to extend the terminal date of December 2015.

Daunemigha insisted that the agitation for a better Niger Delta had shifted from physical confrontation to an intellectual engagement.

The youth leader said former President Jonathan conceded defeat and congratulated President Buhari, adding that the likes of Asari-Dokubo should stop dragging the region backwards with their empty threats.

He said: “I expect the likes of Asari-Dokubo to follow the example and accept the realities on ground, instead of mourning more than the bereaved.

“The youths in Niger Delta should not make themselves vulnerable to the antics of Asari-Dokubo by calling for the resumption of militancy in the region.

“All well-meaning Ijaw elders and youths should give their support and encourage the the Buhari Presidency as he means well for the Niger Delta region.”

Mark, Ekweremadu, Tambuwal, Nwobodo, Ijaw leader greet Buhari

SENATE President David Mark, his deputy Ike Ekweremadu and Speaker of House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal yesterday led other eminent citizens to congratulate the president-elect, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, for his victory at the polls.

He described the victory as a reflection of the wishes of majority of Nigerians.

Mark, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja, hailed the political resilience of Gen. Buhari.

He noted that Nigerians have rewarded his efforts with victory at the polls.

The Senate president urged the president-elect to be magnanimous in victory and govern Nigeria equitably and fairly, irrespective of party’s affiliation or creed.

He praised the sportsmanship of President Goodluck Jonathan, describing him as a worthy statesman.

Mark said: “President Jonathan has assumed a clear leadership in the comity of African nations, where Heads of Government are perceived to be sit-tight leaders.

“He (President Jonathan) has set a classic acceptance of the aphorism that power belongs to God and He grants it to whoever He pleases. For this, history will be kind to him.”

Ekweremadu, who also reacted to the outcome of the presidential election in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu, in Abuja, said the citizens have spoken through their ballots and praised President Jonathan for conceding defeat to Gen. Buhari.

He noted that such “unprecedented show of statesmanship had gone a long way in rewriting the history of the nation’s democracy and ensuring post-election peace and security of Nigeria.”

He said: “Whichever way we look at the 2015 presidential election, the real winner is Nigeria, and the greatest beneficiaries are Nigerians and our democracy, especially our electoral system.

“I congratulate General Buhari, who no doubt has the experience, popular support, and goodwill to continue with the transformation process, and commend President Goodluck Jonathan for not only bequeathing the legacy of reformed electoral process, but also leading by example in the quest for the post-election stability, peace, security, and harmony of Nigeria”.

Tambuwal described the presidential election as a watershed in the country’s history.

He said the will of the majority of the people, as expressed in the results of the election should be respected.

Tambuwal, in a welcome speech on resumption from election break, congratulated President Jonathan and the president-elect over the successful conduct and the outcome of the election.

According to him, by conceding defeat, Jonathan has written his name in gold.

He said Jonathan would be remembered for playing a critical role in eliminating tension following the announcement of result of the election.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega and his colleagues were also lauded by the Speaker for not capitulating in the face of mounting pressures.

Hailing the international community, the media and civil society organisations (CSO) for their support, the Speaker urged them to ensure the success of the April 11 elections.

Former Old Anambra State Governor Senator Jim Nwobodo also congratulated the president-elect on his victory.

Nwobodo, a former chairman of the Governors’ Forum during the Second Republic, also congratulated Jonathan for his sportsmanship in conceding defeat.

In a statement in Enugu yesterday, Nwobodo assured Buhari that the Igbo would support and cooperate with him and his government in moving Nigeria forward, “in spite of the way the Igbo voted.”

He appealed to Buhari to reunite Nigerians, as the voting pattern in the last election showed a great divide across ethnic and religious divide.

“The campaigns and elections are over and every Nigerian irrespective of tribe, tongue and religion, would very soon become your responsibility,” Nwobodo said.

Also yesterday, the president’s kinsmen, who are members of the umbrella organisation of Ijaw people, the Ijaw National Congress (INC), have congratulated the president-elect.

They admonished Nigerians to eschew any act that was capable of endangering the peace, unity and corporate existence of the country.

INC, through its president, Boma Obuoforibo, in an online statement yesterday, stated that President Jonathan did well by conceding defeat and congratulating Gen. Buhari, even before the formal announcement of the final results by INEC Chairman.

INC said: “On behalf of the Ijaw ethnic nationality, we commend President Jonathan for his courageous outing in the 2015 presidential election. He made all Nigerians proud by his unprecedented show of sportsmanship in accepting the verdict of INEC.

“His telephone call to congratulate Gen. Buhari on his victory at the polls, even before the formal declaration of results by INEC, is a statesmanlike act that has endeared him as a role model for emerging leaders of our country and Africa.

“We congratulate Gen. Buhari on his victory at the polls and wish him divine wisdom and courage to lead our dear Nigeria into a new era of peace and broadly-shared prosperity.”
