  • Jonathan has no reason to quit PDP, says aide

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has no reason to quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze said on Sunday.

Eze spoke while denying reports suggesting that Jonathan had resigned from the PDP and retired from active politics.

He said the report, which went viral on social media, was first published by an unknown website saying it was borne out of mischief.

He said: “Our attention has been drawn to a fake story published by an unknown website, alleging that former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan has quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Obviously, this is a fabrication  borne out of mischief as the publishers of the fake story claimed that the former President  made the statement while being  interviewed by Nigeria News Agency (NAN).

“There is absolutely no way the former President could have spoken to a non-existent news agency, as none in the country goes by that name.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Dr. Jonathan has no reason at this time to resign his membership of PDP, the party under which platform he became Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President and President.

“Those who derive pleasure in spreading fake information had better occupy themselves with more productive endeavours that are obviously more relevant to nation building”.

  • Beware of fake ‘My Transition Hours’ – Jonathan’s aide

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s aide on Thursday raised alarm over fake online versions of his book, ‘My Transition Hours’.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze.

It reads “We have just been informed that a fake document contrived by mischief makers, and being passed on as the e-version of the just launched ‘My Transition Hours’, a book by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, is now circulating online.”

The general public was advised to ignore such publication as the chapters and contents are not the same as the book publicly presented two days ago in Abuja by the former President.

“We note that the e-copy of ‘My Transition Hours’ is not being marketed, as such, the fake online version could only have been created by those out to deceive the unsuspecting public.” it stated.

According to a statement issued by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, the former President said: “Mallam Ciroma was a well-respected statesman and committed patriot who creditably acquitted himself and left enviable records while serving our nation in various capacities.

“It is almost impossible to find a man who bestrode and dominated the worlds of journalism and banking as he did. Mallam Ciroma played historic roles in the social and political development of Nigeria and his death is a sad loss to our nation.

“He will be remembered for his sagacity, leadership credentials and worthy contributions to the nation’s growth and development.” he stated

  • Jonathan to leaders: Make sacrifices for Nigeria’s democracy

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has advised Nigerian leaders to make personal sacrifices towards strengthening the nation’s democracy and make the country great.

He spoke on Friday night at the inauguration of a flyover built by the administration of Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose in Ado Ekiti.

Leaders, he said, should always strive to resist the pressure from unpatriotic elements  who wish to subjugate democracy to attain selfish ends.

According to a statement by his spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan spoke against the backdrop of the coming Ekiti Governorship election in the state.

He said: “Since I came in I have been going round the state with the Governor. I have seen the support the Governor still has; I have seen the support the Peoples Democratic Party enjoys in the State. I have also seen the enthusiasm of our people. I don’t believe anybody can defeat the PDP in Ekiti, if real election is going to be conducted.”

On the need for free and fair elections in the country, Jonathan said: “I use this opportunity to call on Mr. President because I was there before, and I know that when you are there, there is so much pressure on you to use all the powers at your disposal to subjugate democracy.

“Don’t do that because what you go with, at the end of the day, is the good name you leave behind. If you use your powers negatively, posterity will haunt you. I call on Mr. President to use his power to strengthen democracy because all the great democracies we see in the world today were built by people. People make sacrifices to make their country great.”

Making a case for good leadership, the former President stated further that he always felt sad each time people said negative things about Nigeria, noting that it has got to a stage where the nation’s neighbours cite the country as a bad example.

He said: “A President of a neighbouring country, Ghana, recently made two negative remarks about Nigeria. First, the current Ghanaian President was addressing Ghanaians about the movement of cattle within their shores and he said openly that Ghana is not like Nigeria where cattle roam freely. That was quite uncomplimentary.  He added that recently the same President was speaking in the United Kingdom when he made disparaging remarks about Nigeria’s currency.

“If it has got to a level when the Presidents of neighbouring countries will cite Nigeria as a negative example, then we must know as leaders of this country that certain things are not going well, and we must change the way we do things.”

He described Governor Fayose as a man who has the courage to lead his people, noting that he never compromised anything that had to do with the interest of the people of Ekiti State.

“He (Fayose) has done well and has defended and protected the interest of the people of Ekiti State. We are here for infrastructural development. While here, I have inspected the High Court complex that was commissioned yesterday (Thursday). I have inspected the market being constructed. I was a part of commissioning of the new Governor’s Office and I have inspected the office. This night I am commissioning the Flyover. Everybody is talking about this flyover which is not just the first in Ekiti State but the first flyover of its kind in Nigeria.

“The resources of Ekiti State are small compared to many other states. It is a feat to have this kind of projects done here. We have to thank the vision of such a dynamic man Ayodele Fayose who is the Governor of the State.

Jonathan also commended Fayose in the area of education, stressing that any leader who wanted to develop and liberate his people would first treat education as a priority.

“Anybody who does not encourage education wants to imprison the minds of the people so that he will continue to subjugate them and exploit them”, said.

He described Ekiti people as a population that places high value on education. “Not too long ago we were surprised when Ekiti records in national examinations dropped so low. I was quite pleased when the records improved through the efforts of Governor Ayodele Fayose, of course supported by the Deputy Governor, a university professor that supervised the educational sector. So, anybody who can enhance education and improve the infrastructure of the state within the limits of the limited resources available to the state has a good vision for the state.”

    Jonathan debunks certificate scandal allegations

The office of former President Goodluck Jonathan has debunked recent newspaper report which included the ex-President as one of the prominent Nigerians that had been linked to certificate scandal.

A statement issued on Monday by Jonathan’s media adviser Ikechukwu Eze dismissed the claim as lies.

He stressed that the ex-President had “never been linked to any doubt, scandal or controversy concerning his academic qualifications.

The statement reads “Our attention has been drawn to a story in the Punch newspaper of Sunday 26 March where former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was mentioned as one of the ‘prominent Nigerians with certificate scandals.

“We really don’t know where this is coming from, but we wish to remain unambiguous in our assertion that this is obvious falsehood, since the former President has never been linked to any doubt, scandal or controversy concerning his academic qualifications.

“We are not aware of any probe, allegation or litigation relating to his very well-known academic qualifications. For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to restate that former President Jonathan’s educational records can easily be traced to St Michael’s Primary School, Oloibiri and Mater Dei High School, lmiringi where he obtained his first school leaving certificate (FSLC) and General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level respectively, as well as the University of Port Harcourt, where he received his Bachelor of Science, Master’s and Doctorate degrees.

“Luckily, many of former President Jonathan’s classmates from primary school through the university are still alive and are traceable.

“It is therefore obvious that there is no justification for this abstruse association, as there is nothing linking the former President to the story.

“Again, we advise media organisations to always cross-check their facts in order to avoid falling for the convenient choice of publishing false information.” he said.

Jonathan denies rejecting UK’s offer to rescue Chibok girls

The Office of the former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday debunked claims that the last administration rejected an offer by British forces to rescue the kidnapped Chibok school girls.

A statement issued by Media Adviser to the ex-President, Ikechukwu Eze, reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a report that has been trending, without proper attribution, to the effect that the last administration rebuffed British offer to rescue the kidnapped Chibok school girls.

“We wish to promptly point out that nothing can be further from the truth, as Nigerians are conversant with the efforts made by the Jonathan administration towards rescuing the Chibok girls, especially in relation to collaborating with the international community, in the bid.

“We can confidently say that the lies in this report are self -evident. This is because the international press as well as the Nigeria media actively covered the multinational efforts and collaboration which involved some of the major powers deploying their crack intelligence officers to work with our own security operatives, and those of our neighbours.

“In the course of the mission, the international team, including members from Nigeria’s neighbours of Chad, Niger and Cameroun, met regularly with our own intelligence officers to plan and conduct their operations.

“In fact, the Jonathan administration was so genuinely supportive that the foreign powers involved were granted permission to overfly our airspace, while conducting the search and rescue missions.

“We would wish to recall that this collaboration was made possible following letters personally written by former President Jonathan to ex- President Barack Obama of the United States, President Francois Hollande of France, Mr. David Cameron, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, as well as personal contacts made to the Governments of Israel and China, seeking their assistance in the search for the abducted Chibok girls.”

Stressing that some people are playing politics with the issue of the Chibok girls, he said that such people will stop at nothing to further their interest.

He urged media houses to always cross-check their facts before rushing to publish false information, especially when being spread by those who want to unfairly promote their own pride, against the national interest.

Jonathan disowns comment on 2019 elections

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has debunked an online report which claimed that he spoke about 2019 elections during a meeting with his kinsmen in Otuoke, Bayelsa State.

A statement issued by Jonathan’s media aide, Mr.Ikechukwu Eze, dismissed the claim as lies, stressing  that the former President was neither in his home state on the stated date nor met with his “kinsmen who paid him an end of year visit” as claimed in the report.

It reads: “Our attention has just been drawn to a fabricated online publication alleging that the former President Goodluck Jonathan made comments on the 2019 elections, while hosting his kinsmen in Otuoke last Tuesday.

“Those reports are false and bear no truth whatsoever. The former President was not in Otuoke on Tuesday, neither did he make the comments attributed to him. In fact, he has only just returned to his community to spend Christmas having been away for two weeks. So he could not have been hosting anyone there last Tuesday.

“Of what good is it to our national development efforts if some people spend so much energy spreading falsehood about fellow citizens and our nation?

“The former President wishes his fellow compatriots a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year in advance, and advises all to always channel their efforts towards working to attain the nation of our collective dreams.”

    Jonathan mourns late Saro-Wiwa Jnr

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed grief over the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa Jnr, describing him as a bright star and patriot.

The former President made the remark in a condolence message to the family, adding that the late Saro-Wiwa, who served in his Government as Senior Special Assistant on Civil Society and International Media, was a strong advocate for a just society.

In a statement issued by Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan’s media aide, the former President further said: “I am deeply saddened by the passage to eternal glory, of Mr Ken Saro-Wiwa Jnr, who died at the age of 48.

“A bright star has been prematurely plucked from the Nigerian firmament.  Ken Wiwa Jnr, like his father, Ken Saro Wiwa, was a patriot.

“He was a consummate writer, highly driven and determined crusader with an undiluted sense of citizen rights, equity and justice.

“Ken was friendly, humane, idealistic and selfless, giving freely of himself in service to humanity, without expecting any personal reward.

“My prayers are with the family he left behind. Adieu great son of Nigeria,” he added.
