“The Ikeja Golf Club Championship usually comes up every November.

“On Monday we had the caddies, Tuesday we had the pros and the guests, while on Wednesday was for the veterans and the ladies, Thursday we had a special kitty.

  • Captain Sina Akinyemi: Integrated golf range our legacy for Ikeja Golf Club

Captain Sina Akinyemi: Integrated golf range our legacy for Ikeja Golf Club

When it is completed, the Integrated Golf Range under construction by the Ikeja Golf Club will be the most interesting range in the whole of Nigeria.

The idea in itself is model; an architectural feat that on its own is capable of driving golfers and newbies to the range.

With completion set for six months, the state-of-the-art facility is smartly carved out of the challenging but tight nine-hole golf course of the 55-year old Ikeja Golf Club.

The model range is set over the club’s car park, so as a player sets out to shoot balls, he/she is greeted with a long line of cars parked underneath.

This initiative is compelling because Ikeja Golf Club located in the city center of the most populated city in Africa, is the most used course in Lagos mainland. Urban development wouldn’t allow the golf club to expand further hence the need to be imaginative in pursuit of expansion and development.

Speaking excitedly about the project, captain of Ikeja Golf Club, Sina Akinyemi, said: “The integrated golf range is the legacy of my administration. It has a completion date of six months and in less than seven weeks of construction we have achieved tremendous work.”

Akinyemi announced that this year’s edition Ikeja Club Championship, which is their pinnacle competition, will tee off Monday, and will coincides with the first phase commissioning of the legacy project started by the incumbent committee.

“By the time we are leaving in six months’ time, the project would have been completed and handed over to the club and that would be our legacy.

“It is a state-of-the-art facility that will improve golfing experience for members of the club, and everyone. This project is set to place the golf club on the map of the golf world,” he added.

For one, it is expected that it will improve competition among golfers because there is a short and long range game areas. The short range will be opened and golfers can practice before they play and this reduces the advantage of the highly skilled golfers. When you spend time practicing well in the range you will become a better golfer and narrow down the gap between you and otherwise good players.”

The range will include long and short game areas, practice range, virtual golf simulation zone, lounge, and 60-vehicle capacity car park with roof netting among other facilities.

“Situated behind the club house and work yard, the range stands at an elevated podium overlooking a 60-vehicle car park. It is divided into 10 columns with its own booths, so a group of golfers can take one of the booths to shoot balls and relax when they need too. There is bar lounge, virtual range and staff dorm also.

“Because golfers will be shooting over the vehicles, there is going to be roof nettings to provide cover for them. Not only that, we have an adopted school to the right of the range and the Hole 9 fairway to the left, so netting will be elongated to protect the two. We don’t want wayward balls to go into the school and obstruct players on the course. We have all areas covered and when we are done this range will be a one-in-town masterpiece,” added Akinyemi.
