    Ikeme thanks Nigerians

Super Eagles Goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has appreciated Nigerians for giving him the support needed to keep a clean sheet  in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying match against the Tafias of Tanzania in Daar salem on Saturday.

The Wolves of England safe glove, who had earlier told Sportinglife that he has all it takes to step into the shoes of Vincent Enyeama, really proved his worth in the match, as he made some saves to deny the host the opportunity of disgracing the former African Champions.

Quoting his words, the 29 -year- old goalkeeper said: “First I have to thank Nigerians for giving me the support alongside other players to serve the country, also, we have to thank the coach for extending invitations to us, we promise Nigerians that we would do better in subsequent matches. My performance was nothing extraordinary, but what is expected of me as a goalkeeper” he  said.

Born in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, Ikeme progressed through Wolverhampton Wanderers’ academy and made the first team squad in their 2003–04 Premier League season. Due to Matt Murray’s long term injury, he was promoted to the substitutes’ bench for a string of games but never played. To gain first team action, he moved on loan to League Two side Accrington Stanley. He made senior debut on  October  16, 2004 when he played the first of four games for them, keeping a clean sheet at Aldershot Town. He also had a further loan move to Stockport County in Autumn 2005 which was cut short due to a hand injury. He finally made his Wolves debut the following season, in a 5–1 win over Chester City in the League Cup on August  23, 2005. However, although often on the bench, he had to wait until August 26, 2006 for his first league appearance for the club when he appeared as a late substitute in a 1–0 win over Luton Town.

QPR TO POUNCE ON WOLVES’ IKEME

English Championship side, Queens Park Rangers, are looking to sign Nigeria Intrnational goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme from fellow Championship side, Wolverhampton Wanderers amids fear over their goalkeeper Robert Green’s future.

In 2010 QPR’s decision to sign the goalkeeper was scuppered when he signed a new deal to stay at the Molineux.

The 29-year-old was called up to the Nigeria squad this week for their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Tanzania on September 3, however, he was surprisingly dropped for the Wolves game with Hull last weekend in favour of Arsenal loanee Emiliano Martinez.

QPR have concerns about the future of Rob Green, who has been discussed by West Ham again this week.

Ikeme declared his allegiance to Nigeria some years ago and will now challenge Nigeria captain Vincent Enyeama for a place in the side.

But that didn’t mean he wasn’t unsure of the validity of the phone call that informed him of his first ever Nigeria call-up.

“When the message and the phone call came I thought someone was winding me up to start with,” he said.

“I spoke to the coach and it started to make more sense and I realised it was none of my cousins winding me up or anything like that.”

Ikeme said it was a ‘no-brainer’ to accept the call-up as he has close ties to the country.

Ikeme: Defence key to Wolves success

Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has said that the club’s stability is behind their good defensive record this season.

The Black Country side have conceded just seven goals in their 12 League One matches so far.

The Nigeria-born Ikeme believes that fielding a regular back four of Matt Doherty, Danny Batth, Sam Ricketts and Scott Golbourne has made a big difference for Wolves, who have been relegated twice in the past two seasons.

“Everything seems a lot more stable here now,” Ikeme told BBC WM.

“It’s nice to go into games knowing what the players in front of you are going to do. It gives me less to do. Some of the last-ditch tackles the lads have been putting in have been brilliant.”
