    Tom Ikimi becomes an octogenarian

Chief Tom Ikimi is a man after God’s heart. This is evident in his sojourn in life as all odds have always favoured him.

From his formative years, he has remained steadfast and positioned himself as a man who is destined for greatness.

All he wanted in his life came with sheer dint of hard work and till today, he has remained thankful to his creator for giving him a fulfilled life as an administrator, a top Edo State elder-statesman and a politician.

As a student, he started student activism and kickstarted his political sojourn which also saw him hold top positions as a member of the National Union of Nigerian Students. During his service year as a pioneer member who graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaira with a degree in architecture, Ikimi was appointed by the former Head of State, General Sanni Abacha as a Special Adviser where he wrote the popular memo that gave birth to the Petroleum Trust Fund.

PDP: Ikimi, Obanikoro, Ihedioha, others seek power shift to South in 2019

Some prominent chieftains of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the southern part of the country are pushing for power shift to the South in 2019.

Coming under the aegis of PDP Southern Leaders Consultative Forum, the group is headed by a former Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi.

Present at its inaugural meeting in Abuja yesterday were prominent chieftains of the PDP from Southsouth, Southeast and Southwest, such as a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, Senator Ben Obi, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedokun, Prince Dayo Adeyeye and Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi.

Others are Mr. Jimi Agbaje, Senator Iyiola Omisore, Mr. Jide Adeniji, Rep Ladi Adebutu, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and Senator Anietie Okon among others.

Ikimi said the forum assumed responsibility for charting a new direction for PDP, particularly in the three geopolitical zones in the South.

He stated that the North and the South had produced two presidents each since the beginning of the country’s democratic rule in 1999.

“The South has produced two presidents in the person of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, while the North has also produced two presidents in the person of the late Umaru Yar ‘Adua and General Muhammadu Buhari,” Ikimi said.

He, however, said the aim of the forum was not to divide the PDP, but to go as a movement for effective forum for unity of purpose.

“I can assure you that members of the PDP from the North are also meeting and strategising. If the South is not united and come together, everything will be lost,” Ikimi added.

He urged PDP members to minimise internal conflicts and put its house in order, adding that the leadership crisis plaguing the party will soon come to an end.

The group set up a seven-member committee for the purpose of formulating its structure.

The committee is chaired by former  Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke.

Members of the committee are a former House of Representatives Leader, Mrs. Mulikat Akande; Mrs. Remi Adiukwu; Mrs. Fidelia Njeze; Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu; Senator Nimi Barigha Amange and Senator Stella Onu.

The committee was given two weeks to conclude its assignment.

  • Edo 2016: The case of PDP, by Ikimi

Edo 2016: The case of PDP, by Ikimi

FORMER Minister of Foreign Affairs and one of the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State today, Chief Tom Ikimi, has also made a case for his party and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu, insisting that he is poised to win the Edo election.

Admitting that the stake is very high both for the leading opposition party and for its candidate, Ikimi said, “I was one of the two persons fundamentally responsible for the creation of the Action Congress (AC) which in 2007 admitted Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as a member and eventually the party’s governorship candidate. Everything happened virtually at the very last minute, preceding the governorship election of that year. My colleagues and I fought a titanic battle to secure victory for the Action Congress and install Adams Oshiomhole governor.

Our team in that struggle was a formidable political family. We are still very much together today. One of the stars of the team is Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu.

Yes, the stakes are high. All of us who set out with Adams Oshiomhole in 2007 are on one side with the good people from the three senatorial districts of our state, earnestly seeking a peaceful change. We have all overwhelmingly endorsed the candidature of Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu, a consummate politician, a religious man, lawyer, farmer and successful business man.”

On the issues he considers critical in the election, he said, “A critical issue in this election is to prevent a de facto, third term governorship by Adams Oshiomhole, through the back door. The outgoing governor has been extremely hostile to the Central Senatorial District where I come from. He has boasted that he does not require the Esan vote. We want a state in which all the three senatorial zones operate in harmony and have a sense of belonging.

Responding to the allegation that his interest in the Edo election is because he wants to use it as his final victory in politics before his retirement, he said, “a victory by the PDP and the installation of Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu as the next governor of Edo State will be the best thing to happen at this time for Edo State, the South-South geo-political zone and indeed the whole country. Edo State will breathe a gale force relief of fresh air and embrace a new lease of life. The Edo people need to regain their position of excellence in so many spheres once again.

“Among the lot of governorship candidates, only Pastor Ize Iyamu has an agenda of reasoned policies. Virtually all the notable political leaders and respected national elder statesmen of Edo State are in the PDP.  They are all in full support of our candidate. The victory will be a high note success for all of them in their political careers.

“This election, by the grace of God, will not be the end of my political career; instead the victory will ensure the end of the reckless ambitions of the outgoing governor dreaming dreams to establish himself as the “Jagaban” of Edo State.

I predict that the PDP victory will usher in a governor who is set to hit the ground running and who will open up avenues for lucrative jobs for our teeming youths, pioneer an agrarian revolution for the state, provide shelter for our people through a simple but effective housing plan, ensure adequate medical facilities reach every nook and cranny and establish a guarantee that qualitative education will not be merely characterized by red colored aluminum roofs on a handful of selected wobbly structures.

He said he was sure of victory because, according to him, his party’s candidate is an experienced and trusted politician in the state. “It is important to note that it was Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu who as one of the strong pillars of the Action Congress (AC) party at its inception, acquired and paid for the party office on Airport Road. This may be new information to our dear Comrade who was not a member of the party at the time. The signboard in front of the property has since changed from AC – Action Congress, to ACN – Action Congress of Nigeria and today to APC.  We have heard campaign comments on this election made by Adams Oshiomhole which are all mostly a variety insults to the elder statesmen of our party as well as the previous PDP governor of Edo State. The outgoing governor should have had the decency to admit that it was indeed Governor Lucky Igbinedion who recommended him to us and who also contributed substantial finance to the Comrade’s first election campaign.”

On the PDP crisis at the national level and in the state, Ikimi said, “The PDP secured national power in 1999 right at the beginning of this political dispensation and held power continuously for 16 years. The loss of the presidential election in 2015 put the party into the opposition for the first time. Managing a party in opposition is much different from managing one in power. The process needed now is to cleanse the party leadership and democratically install one that is strong, dependable and capable to rebuild the party.

“The country is certainly now in dire need of a well structured, stable opposition party. The PDP has viable structures nationwide but the process that brought in Ali Modu Sherrif as National Chairman was faulty. I was prepared to go along with him as National Chairman if it was for a specified brief period. I am afraid; I do not consider the actions of Ali Modu Sherrif since the first Port Harcourt Convention as the actions of someone who has the deeper interest of the party at heart. How, for instance, could he adopt someone who participated and lost the governorship primaries in Edo State as candidate. All the critical structures of the party support the Caretaker Committee and I believe the matter will very soon be appropriately resolved.”

  • Ikimi a serial loser, says Oshiomhole

Ikimi a serial loser, says Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has described a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Tom Ikimi, as a serial election loser during the launching of the party’s governorship poll campaign in the state on Saturday.

The governor also took a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party, saying it underdeveloped the state.

He said the PDP deprived Edo State of basic infrastructure under the disguise that it was a civil service state.

About Ikimi, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oshiomhole said, “Throughout the period that Ikimi was with us, and I respect him at least because he has capacity to lose election serially, we never won elections in Igueben. When he left, we felt relieved.

“He (Ikimi) said he was leaving because we elected a new chairman (Chief John Odigie-Oyegun). But this is a party chairman who has been a permanent secretary at the age of 40, not by quota but by merit. He fought for democracy, went on exile and came back. He founded a political party; we elected him as the party chairman and he (Ikimi) said that they took his pot of soup.”

At the ceremony, the APC Chairman, Odigie-Oyegun, handed the party’s flag to Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and his running mate, Philip Shuaibu, as the governorship and deputy governorship candidates of the party in the September 10 election.

Oyegun was led by other leaders of the party at the state and national levels to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, where the event took place, under heavy presence of security operatives from the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

No fewer than 13 APC governors were present at the venue.

They included the Imo State Governor and Chairman of the APC Governors Forum, Rochas Okorocha; Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Simon Lalung (Plateau), Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna) and Mohammed Abubakar (Bauchi).

The governors of Niger, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Bornu, Kwara, Oyo and Kogi were represented by their deputies.

According to Oyegun, Obaseki is a “brain box” in whom the APC is well pleased.

He stated that the party was proud of the achievements of the incumbent governor in the last seven and a half years.

  • Ikimi, Igbinedion, Anenih can’t win election in Edo, says Airhiavbere

Ikimi, Igbinedion, Anenih can’t win election in Edo, says Airhiavbere

Former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2012 election, Major-General Charles Airhiavbere, has said that the trio of Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and Chief Tony Anenih cannot win the September 10 election for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Airhiavbere, who was reacting to the so-called red card issued to Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the All Progressive Congress (APC)  urged the PDP leaders to stop toying with the emotions of the people.

He said it was unfair for Ikimi to say that former President Goodluck Jonathan was an anti-party leader for allegedly ensuring the success of Oshiomhole in 2012.

Airhiavbere noted that the leadership structure the PDP leaders were used to has changed.

The former PDP candidate said Edo PDP leaders were jokers to think of defeating Oshiomhole and the APC because “they have me to deal with”.

He lambasted Ikimi for referring to the new General Hospital in Benin City, the Edo State capital, as a glorified clinic when he (Ikimi) was paid N350m as a consultant to design the hospital.

Airhiavbere urged the PDP leaders to bow their heads in shame after being part of a government that ruled and ruined the state between 1999 and 2007.

He said: “I was the candidate of the PDP in the 2012 governorship elections. For Pastor Ize-Iyamu and Tom Ikimi to say former President Jonathan is an anti-party leader is unfair. They were unfair to Jonathan as a president of this country and a leader of the PDP as at that time.”

“We have reached a stage where PDP leaders should stop toying with the emotions of Edo people. Ize-Iyamu emergence as the PDP candidate is dead on arrival. How can the PDP win elections here when it can abandon its candidate in 2012.

“In 2011 and 2012, Chief Tony Anenih told the public that he sold his house to lead the governorship campaign, but today, it is in the public glare that Jonathan sent money for that election. I was an orphan at the tribunal up to the Supreme Court. I know the role the leaders of the party played during my election.

“They sold Oshiomhole to the Edo people four years ago because of their inordinate ambition. Today, they are not talking about Edo people, they are talking about how Oshiomhole betrayed them. It was because Oshiomhole did not agree with them to give Ize-Iyamu the ticket.”

•Edo PDP candidate Ize-Iyamu begins campaign

Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi, has said Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole won his 2012 re-election because former President Goodluck Jonathan provided a level-playing field for all candidates.

Ikimi said Oshiomhole won the election with landslide victory not because of his merit but because he (Ikimi) and PDP’s governorship candidate in this year’s election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, took the governor to Dr Jonathan to demand a level-playing field.

The former minister spoke in Benin, the state capital, at the take-off of Ize-Iyamu’s governorship campaign.

There were joyous moments inside the hall when news of the court ruling in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, filtered in.

PDP’s Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, who was represented by Senator Odion Ugbesia, presented the party’s flag and new keys of the Edo Government House to Ize-Iyamu.

Ikimi said elections were won in the state with personalities, like Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and Chief Tony Anenih.

The PDP chieftain urged President Muhammadu Buhari to provide a level-playing field during this year’s election as a payback to him for leading the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “Pastor Ize-Iyamu brought Oshiomhole to me. I never knew him before. I was told he was a former Labour leader. I was persuaded to accept him and we took him round the 192 wards.

“In his first four years, he betrayed us. We wanted to drop him but he knelt down to beg me. It was myself and Pastor Ize-Iyamu that took Oshiomhole to former President Jonathan to beg him to provide a level-playing field.

“Jonathan supported us. Oshiomhole won, not because he was brilliant but because he has paid us in a bad coin.”

Senator Matthew Urhoghide said Oshiomhole paid those who supported him to power with ingratitude.

A former Information Minister Prof. Jerry Gana said the High Court verdict, which affirmed the removal of former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, was a good sign that victory was in sight.

Ize-Iyamu said the PDP would win the September 10 governorship election.

He promised to restore the “lost glory” of the state.

The cleric said the PDP was sincere and passionate about the development of the state.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel Udom urged the electorate to vote for the PDP.

The governor said it was time for the people of Edo to return the state to the PDP family.

He assured that Ize-Iyamu would governed with transparency.

Senator Ben Obi said the PDP candidate had always ensured victory for whichever side he belonged since 1999.

  • EFCC probes Ikimi on alleged link with ONSA

EFCC probes Ikimi on alleged link with ONSA

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Tom Ikimi has joined the rank of those brought under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with some financial activities in  the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The amount involved was  unknown at  at press time.

Besides Ikimi, the EFCC is already screening the records of some Bureau De Change (BDC) operators to identify how some of the suspects laundered their loot from arms deals.

Also, the commission arrested a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for allegedly obstructing operatives from picking up a Beninoise.

The EFCC, it was gathered, stumbled on fresh records of transactions in ONSA which showed that the top PDP member might have been a beneficiary of the slush funds from ONSA.

A top source in EFCC said: “We have been interacting with Ikimi in the last few days on some financial activities in ONSA. At least, he has appeared twice before our team.

“So far, he has been on and off but we are not yet done with him. We have some outstanding issues to clear from him.”

Asked to be specific, the source added: “We won’t release the details now until we have reached an appreciable stage in our investigation.”

As at press time however, EFCC was screening the records of some BDC operators because some suspects implicated in the $2.1billion arms deals allegedly used the BDCs to launder funds.

Another source added: “We are already screening the transaction records of some BDCs in order to track down how some $2.1billion arms suspects launder their loot.

“Investigations have revealed how these high-profile suspects hauled foreign currencies to BDCs in exchange for Naira.

“The screening of the list will assist us in fishing out these suspects.”

At a meeting with BDC operators in January, the EFCC Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Magu said: “My operatives often tell me what they see during investigations. We need to talk to you, as some of your operators are fond of carrying huge amounts of money out of the country, since they can no longer withdraw more than $300 using the ATM.

‘‘There are fraudulent involvements of Bureau De Change operators in the arms deal scandal.

”There are reports of some of your members withdrawing as much as N500million in two, three, four tranches in this arms deal scam. So, I am greatly disturbed. I think there should be a documentation regarding your activities, as this will enable your group to checkmate anyone who is involved in any fraudulent activity.”

Meanwhile, the EFCC yesterday arrested the senior lawyer in Lagos for allegedly obstructing operatives from picking up a Beninoise suspect.

The lawyer was  in custody at the time of filing this report.

The EFCC source said: “We have a Beninoise suspect whom our operatives wanted to arrest in Lagos but they were obstructed from performing their official duties by the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

“Based on the obstruction, the SAN has been arrested accordingly. He is currently undergoing interrogation in EFCC custody.”

The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren confirmed the arrest.

He said: “The SAN is interacting with  our team.”

  • Ikimi loses ground as 1,000 kinsmen dump PDP

OVER 1000 members of the Peoples Democra-tic Party PDP in Igueben Local Government Area including the former Local Government Transition Committee Chairman, Hon. Tom Adodo, have thrown their support for the administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as they formally dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state.

Igueben is hometown of PDP chieftain, Chief Tom Ikimi.

Addressing the governor and chieftains of the APC at Government House yesterday, Elder Tom Adodo, former Transition Committee Chairman, said, “Today, many of us that are here are from Ward 1 to 10 in Igueben Local Government. We are here to pledge and affirm our support to the Comrade Governor because it is only a foolish man that will not see the developmental strides of the governor in Edo State in the past six years.

“For so many years, PDP administration brought decay to our infrastructures, we have seen decay even in our moral lives and for the six years and three months of the Comrade Governor, we have seen transformation in Edo State and so we are here to pledge our loyalty to the government that have done so much for the people of Edo State.”

In his remarks, Governor Oshiomhole said: “I am delighted and overwhelmed with joy seeing the crowd of supporters here today. Just like the last speaker expressed surprise at the Igueben-Ugoneki road which connects Igueben Local Government with Uhumwode Local Government, you can see the way our state is connected from one local government area to another and with that road, it has become shorter to get to Igueben. Many roads connecting Igueben have been fixed and there are more roads to be done.”

  • It’s act of desperation by Presidency —Ikimi

A renowned Niger Delta human rights lawyer and activist, Mr Oghenejabor Ikimi, has described Presidency’s withdrawal of the security aides of the Speaker of House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, as an act of desperation.

He accused President Goodluck Jonathan of contravening the principle of separation of power as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution and acting beyond his powers in the matter.

Ikimi, who is the National Coordinator of the Centre for the Vulnerable and Underprivileged, a non-governmental organisation, said: “We therefore call on the Presidency to restore all the security details of the incumbent Speaker, his name and picture on the National Assembly website as he remains the duly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“However, should the Peoples Democratic Party feel strongly about his defection, the party can set the law in motion against his seat in the House as the Acting Inspector General of Police do not have the constitutional power to either adjudicate on or interpret section 68 (1)(g) of the 1999 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) nor does the Presidency have the constitutional power to remove the name and picture of the incumbent Hon. Speaker from the National Assembly website while the latter is still in office,” he added.

Ikimi reminded the Presidency that based on the principles of separation of powers as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution, it is only the members of the House of Representatives that can remove the incumbent Speaker from office, adding that until that is done, “he remains the people’s Speaker on the floor of the green chambers and the Number Four citizen in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Therefore the incumbent Speaker is entitled to all the privileges ascribed by the Nigerian constitution to his present office.”
