  • Wife seeks divorce over alleged placement of `infidelity’ charm on her

    Mrs Fatimah Adebayo, a 35-year-old woman, on Monday urged an Ikorodu Customary Court, Lagos, to dissolve her 14-year-old marriage to Mr Segun Adebayo, over alleged placement of sexual protective charm called “thunderbolt’’ on her.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the charm is aimed at tracking women’s infidelity in traditional Yoruba setting.

    The petitioner, a fashion designer who resides at Macaulay Inside, Baiyeku Road, Igbogbo in Ikorodu, prayed the court to end the union to safeguard her life.

    Fatimah further said she had gone through series of assault in the hands of the husband, adding that Adebayo was a threat to her life.

    “My husband laid a thunderbolt, known in our local parlance as `Magun’ on me.

    “I got to discover through an old man in my area and through my father when I was sick.
    “But I smartly lured him to sleep with me so he contracted the thunderbolt effect, after making love with me, he tumbled twice and I called for neighbours’ help.

    “Besides that, my husband beats me, he does not trust me and he does not take care of our children’s welfare.

    “Please save me from this marriage as living with him is now dangerous for me. This is because he can kill me,’’ she said.

    When asked to comment on the allegations, Adebayo, 43, prayed the court to allow his counsel speak on his behalf.

    At that point, Mrs Omolara Abiola, the President of the court said it was important to either debunk or accept the allegations before a third party could come in.

    Abiola adjourned the case till March 7, for further hearing.

  • Court saves 26-year-old marriage from collapse

    An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos State on Monday reconciled a couple, Alfred Adewunmi and his wife, Comfort, whose 26-year-old marriage was on the brink of collapse.

    Adewunmi, 48, a building contractor, had instituted a divorce suit on Sept. 26, 2016 claiming that his wife was not supportive and was also unfaithful to their marriage.

    “My wife is not faithful to me as she has male friends; she is also too stubborn and monitors my movements.

    “She says provocative words that cause me to be angry, which is hazardous to my health.

    “I am not interested in the marriage anymore: please separate us,” the petitioner who resides at Plot 12, Park View Estate, Bagidan, Ijede in Ikorodu, told the court.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Comfort, a 46- year- old mother of three and a trader, had earlier pleaded with the court for reconciliation, and pledged to mend her ways.

    However, following the intervention of the court, headed by Mrs Omolara Abiola, and the couple’s families, the Adewunmis told the court that they would work to resolve their differences and reconcile themselves.

    Abiola subsequently ordered that his wife should sign an undertaking that she would be a good wife, promise to be faithful and stop attending social gatherings only with her husband’s consent.

    The undertaking would also indicate that she would now be supportive and also help her husband build a bright future for their children.

  • Court detains man for contempt, abduction of own children

    An Ikorodu Customary Court on Monday in Lagos, ordered one Isreal Linus to be detained for allegedly kidnapping his two children, after the court had their custody to his wife.

    President of the Court, Mrs Omolara Abiola, had in 2016 awarded the custody of the two children to Mrs Israel Mary after noting that her husband of 14 years was irresponsible.

    Abiola ordered the 42-year-old husband to be detained for contempt of court, having been warned not to take the children away from their mother.

    “Linus absconded with the children since Dec. 2016, he was traced and accosted at Ikeja area of Lagos in Jan. 2017.

    “He kept the children in a hidden place and had been maltreating them, he also refused to enrol them in school.

    “It was the children that secretly informed their mother of their whereabouts through a phone call,” she explained.

    Abiola, however, ordered the husband never to visit their residence till the final decision of the court.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the 35-year-old wife, who resides at Lowa St., in Ikorodu area of Lagos had approached the court seeking dissolution of her marriage, accusing the husband of irresponsibility and battery.

    The court granted her tequest and dissolved the marriage after efforts at reconciliation proved abortive.

    In the ruling, the court granted the woman, custody of the children and said the father can only visit the children at reasonable time of the day.

    The case was adjourned till March 17, for further hearing.

  • Man seeks divorce over wife’s regular visits to public bar

    A 49-year-old man, Abiodun Sokoya, has pleaded with an Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos State to dissolve his 19-year-old marriage over wife’s regular visits to a public bar.

    Sokoya, an engineer, told the court on Thursday that he was no longer interested in the marriage which had produced four children.

    The husband, who lives at Rofo Estate in Odongunyan area of Ikorodu, described his wife was a drunk and a trouble maker.

    “My wife visits her friends at a public bar (beer parlour) and she also drinks alcohol.

    “I warned her to desist from moving with such friends, but she did not heed my warning.”

    According to him, the wife also attends night parties and relates with women who have no husbands; her stubbornness pushed me to marry a second wife.

    “She does not bother to check her children in their schools during visiting days; Please separate us, I can no longer live with her,” he said.

    His wife, Olabisi, however, denied the allegations and urged the court to save her marriage amid tears.

    The Court’s President, Mrs Omolara Abiola, scolded the woman and advised her to change her attitude.

    She also asked the couple to keep the peace pending the outcome of the court’s proceedings.

    The case was adjourned to March 9 for a possible reconciliation.
