  • Eid-el Kabir: Ikorodu monarch preaches peaceful co-existence

The Ayangbure of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, said yesterday that the significance of Eld-eI-Kabir was for Muslims to believe in Allah and co-exist peacefully with their neighbours.

The monarch spoke during Ramadan prayers at the Islamic praying ground in Ikorodu.

He urged residents and community leaders in the community to be tolerant and to show the virtues of Islam.

Shotobi said: “Islam is a religion of peace so we urge everybody to imbibe that spirit so that we can live in peace and harmony with ourselves.”

Similarly, the Chief Imam of Ikorodu, Alhaji Serifudeen Olowooribi, called on Muslims to be good ambassadors of Islam and to show characters worthy of emulation.

According to him, Muslims should imbibe the rules and regulations attached to the religion and maintain peace in their societies.

Speaking at the Yidi, the Lawmaker, representing Ikorodu Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Sanai Agunbiade, urged Muslims to submit themselves to Allah.

Agunbiade, the Majority Leader of the assembly, called on Christians and Muslims to love one another and to live as brothers and sisters having faith in God, country and government.

He pledged to represent the people in his constituency in a practical and accessible manner.

“I enjoin both Christians and Muslims to submit themselves to Allah. Love our neighbours as we love ourselves.

  • Ikorodu monarch, others deny opposing projects

The traditional ruler and leaders of Ikorodu Division have welcomed the move by the Lagos State Government to construct a shopping mall and a theatre at the current underutilised site in Ikorodu Local Government, located at Tos Benson Road.

They debunked claims that they were not in support of the plan, and instead commended Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his decision to embark on the projects in the area.

Speaking on Friday at a Town Hall Meeting at his palace in Ikorodu, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, who recently led a team of his Chiefs to the event, lauded the State Governor for the initiative, adding that the proposed projects would turn-around the economic potentials of Ikorodu Division.

The monarch, who refuted the allegation that the current site of the land had been sold, said he would never be part of such deal.

“I can never compromise the future of Ikorodu.  Economic development is the main reason we are vacating the present location of the council,” he said.

Former Lagos State Deputy Governor Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, praised Ambode for his foresight to embark on the projects, saying that such would create an efficient and more optimal use of the site.

According to him, the new projects would create a viable socio-economic life in the town and enhance its contribution to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He added that more employment opportunities would be created for the youths through the projects.

Lagos State Vice Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Kaoli Olusanya, said with the influx of people into Ikorodu, there was the need for such projects as a shopping mall and a theatre where various investors, entrepreneurs and practitioners in the entertainment industry could operate.

  • Modify celebration of festivals, Ikorodu monarch told

Some traders and residents in Ikorodu, Lagos State, have appealed to the custodians of traditional festivals to modify how they are celebrated.

In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), they called for the abolition of those that were gender biased.

They said the restriction of women during such celebrations, especially during the day-time always had negative impact on their businesses and movements.

Mrs Foluke Agunbiade, a tomato-seller at the Sabo Market in Ikorodu said there still existed traditional festivals in the town which restricted the movement of persons, especially, women.

“We need to have in place traditional feasts that enhance economic activities and respect for womanhood.

“It is not good that we still celebrate traditions that give the impression that one gender is more superior to the other.

“It is bad for our development if we still have traditional festivals that violate human rights,’’ she said.

Another trader, Mrs Aisha Kareem, who sells fruits at Ojubode area of Ikorodu, said traditions ought not to be anti-social.

She added that traditional festivals should not contradict modern tenets of community life.

“Cultural festivals should usually enhance trade and commerce as well as other aspects of people’s lives.

“Tradition that diminishes human rights is bad and should be done away with,’’ she said.

A fish farmer, whose resides at Itaoluwo area of Ikorodu, Mr Jonathan Egunjobi, said that “our traditions should not portray us as being anti-progress.

“Any traditional feast that is anti-modern and did not uphold human rights should be reformed.

“In fact, festivities that particularly erode raising the dignity of women must, of necessity, be made better.’’

Women’s movements were restricted in some parts of Ikorodu recently following the announcement that the town wanted to celebrate one of its traditional festivals.

  • Oro Day: Women free to go out, says Ikorodu monarch

The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, yesterday denied issuing statement ordering women to stay indoor during today’s Oro Day.

A letter signed by the monarch to the Ikorodu Town Hall Management Board Chairman, entitled MAGBO FESTIVAL 2018 on April 23 reads in part: “This is to notify you of the above-mentioned festival which is slated for Tuesday 8th May 2018, according to tradition, all female are forbidden to be seen outside their homes or move around the town on this date which is Oro Day.”

Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal in a statement by police spokesman Chike Oti quoted Oba Shotobi as saying that “it is unthinkable for a man with his level of exposure to do or say anything that would be seen as discriminatory against the female gender.”

The monarch, Edgal said, “however, acknowledged that the festival is an age long tradition of Ikorodu people which had been even before he was born. He added that the festival would hold without denying the female folks their right to freedom of movement.”

Oba Shotobi spoke at a meeting called by Edgal with Palace Chiefs and the Commissioner for Local government and Chieftaincy affairs Alhaji Muslim Folami.

Edgal warned that the command will not tolerate any discriminatory tradition against the female gender.

The command, he said, would deal ruthlessly with anybody who hides under the guise of custom or tradition to foment trouble in the state.

The police chief enjoined women to go about their lawful business without let or hindrance.

“The meeting ended with a joint press statement assuring the people of Ikorodu that the festival would be peaceful,” Edgal said.

  • Court dismisses suit seeking to restrain Ikorodu monarch

Court dismisses suit seeking to restrain Ikorodu monarch

Relief came the way of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi yesterday as an Ikorodu High Court dismissed a suit seeking to restrain him from parading himself as the monarch.
The court presided by Justice Olushola Williams dismissed the suit after taking the submissions of counsels in the matter.
Delivering ruling in the matter yesterday, Justice Williams declined to neither grant any of the claimants’ requests nor determine any of the issues raised for determination of the court.
Three Princes of Ikorodu, Tajudeen Odofin, Tayo Ladega and Gbolahan Onabanjo have filed the suit challenging the installation of Oba Shotobi as the Ayangburen of Ikorodu.
The claimants in the suit filed through their counsel, Mr George Oguntade (SAN), had sought an order of interlocutory injunction restraining Oba Shotobi from parading himself as the Ayangburen of Ikorodu from the court.
They also prayed the court for an order of interlocutory injunction to restrain Oba Shotobi, who is the first respondent, from collecting royalties and salaries from the governor of Lagos State, the Attorney General of Lagos State and the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, who are the second, third and fourth respondents respectively.
They further sought an order of interlocutory injunction from the court restraining the second, third and fourth respondents from dealing with or according any recognition or paying royalties and salaries to the first respondent as the Ayangburen of Ikorodu among other prayers.
Other respondents in the suit are the Lisa of Ikorodu, Chief Zaccheus Odusoga, the Apena of Ikorodu, Chief Kareem Ore, the Oponuwa of Ikorodu, Chief Jacob Adaraloye and Solomade of Ikorodu, Chief Afolabi Adekayaoja as fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth respondents respectively.
But in her ruling, Justice Williams held that the principles of ‘res judicata’ are against the claims of the claimants in the matter.
According to her, the prayers which the claimants were seeking from the court have already been determined and answered in an earlier suit in which her learned brother, Justice Akintunde Savage delivered judgement in 2015.
Justice Williams listed all the issues determined in the judgement delivered by Justice Savage two years ago.
She held that there was no basis for the court to grant fresh orders in a matter that has already been determined by a court.
Earlier, counsel to the Lagos state government, Mr Saheed Quadri had informed the court of his two applications dated November 30, last year and prayed the court to allow him to move the applications before ruling is delivered in the matter.
Quadri said one of the applications seeks the order of the court for the state government to be joined as a respondent in the matter while the other one seeks the order of the court to enable them respond to the claims of the claimants and file their counter affidavit.
But the trial judge insisted that the day had been set aside for delivery of ruling in the matter.
Quadri however withdrew the two applications after the court had delivered its ruling in the matter.
