  • Work begins on 30km Ikorodu-Sagamu road

The Federal Government yesterday launched the repair of the 30.1 kilometre Ikorodu-Sagamu road.

The road, a major link between Lagos and Ogun states, en route other states, has been in disrepair for over 12 years.

The rehabilitation, estimated at N20.8 billion, is awarded to Messrs Arab Contractor O.A.O. Nigeria Ltd, with a duration of 36 months.

The launch, performed by Minister of Power, Works and Housing Mr. Babatunde Fashola, was witnessed by personalities, including Senator Gbenga Ashafa; federal lawmaker representing Ikorodu Central Mr. Jimi Benson; and Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Diaspora Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, among others.

Fashola assured residents of government’s commitment to complete the job on time.

He said Arab Contractor is a tested hand that will do the best of job.

“Arab Contractor built Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ibeshe, to the satisfaction of everybody. In essence, the Federal Government awarded the contract to the firm, based on competence and integrity,” the minister said.

He solicited residents’ cooperation to ensure that the job is done.

Ashafa, reminding the audience how long the road has been neglected, hailed President Buhari for the gesture.

He said the project would be completed as scheduled, as funds for it were available.

“We want to assure Lagosians that the project has received the funds. So, the issue of project abandonment does not arise,” the senator said.

Benson assured the community of improved economic activities during and after the construction.

He advised residents to support the contractors, adding: “The inconveniences that may arise from the construction is only for a while.

“The end justifies the means. This road, upon completion, will attract progress to this community. The impact of this road on our community will be phenomenal, especially when you consider that it is a major arterial road linking states.

‘’This road will free up the pressure on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, thereby making life easier for commuters.”

Dabiri-Erewa urged the National Assembly to speed up passage of the budget so that funds would be released to the Power, Works and Housing Ministry, to execute more projects.

  • Kashamu hails Fed Govt on Ikorodu/ Sagamu Road

The lawmaker representing Ogun East, Senator Buruji Kashamu, has hailed the Federal Government for awarding the contract to rehabilitate Ikorodo-Sagamu Road, which links Lagos State and Ogun State.

Sagamu, Ogijo, Mosinmi and other communities around that axis fall under Ogun East, which Kashamu represents.

Rising from its weekly Federal Executive Committee (FEC)  meeting on Wednesday, the Federal Government announced that it has approved N20.845 billion for rehabilitation of the road.

Kashamu, who on Wednesday took to his Twitter handle @Sen_Kashamu to praise the Federal Government, wrote: “Thanks @ tundefashola for making @MBuhari-led FEC to award the Ikorodu-Shagamu Expressway. I recall the 11th October 2017 letter I sent to your office about the road, which is one of the major roads in my senatorial district. My heart is filled with joy. Kudos!”

The acknowledged copy of the letter showed it was received at the office of the Honourable Minister of Power, Works and Housing on October 16, 2017.

The letter reads: “I write regarding the Sagamu-Ogijo Road, a federal road of high economic value, which has suffered years of neglect.

“The road is a petroleum distribution route and hosts high value installations and industrial plants, such as the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC). There are lots of huge man-hour and economic losses due to the deplorable condition of this road; including the unfortunate loss of lives on several occasions.

“I, however, commend you for listing the road for rehabilitation in this year’s Appropriation Act. I urge you to kindly assist with the full implementation of the rehabilitation of the road due to its national importance. A copy of the relevant page of the Appropriation Act and photographs of some failed sections are herewith attached.”

Kashamu said the fact that the contract of the road has been awarded based on the provision made for it in the 2017 Appropriation Act shows that if the arms of government work together, the people will be better for it.

  • Ikorodu-Sagamu road: Group commends lawmakers

A socio-political organisation, the Alare Associates (AA), yesterday commended the efforts of two lawmakers from Lagos and Ogun states for their relentless efforts to see that the Ikorodu-Sagamu road is made passable so as to alleviate the suffering of numerous motorists and other road users plying the road which has been in very terrible state for years now.

Speaking when he led members of the group’s Assesment Committee to inspect ongoing palliative efforts by the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) on the Ikorodu axis of the road, the group’s Chairman, Arc. Dapo Osibamowo, said the efforts of both Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade of the Lagos State House of Assembly and Hon. Yinka Mafe of the Ogun State House of Assembly, to see that road users in both states can still ply the road, is highly commendable.

“While Agunbiade has constantly ensured that the Lagos end of the road is attended to by Governor Akin Ambode, Mafe on many occasions has facilitated Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s intervention on the Ogun State side of the same road.

“That we are still able to drive from Ikorodu to Sagamu on this road is due to the adequate representation that these reliable lawmakers have offered to their respective constituents. We commend them just as we appreciate both Governors Ambode and Amosun for showing concern for the people using the road and not insisting that it is the responsibility of the federal government which appears uninterested in the plight of our people in the two states,” Osibamowo said.

He explained that the organisation, which is membered by progressive sons and daughters of Ijebu/Remo towns in Lagos and Ogun states, is interested in ensuring that “our people in both states are adequately represented at local, state and federal levels. We strongly believe that effective representation by lawmakers will go a long way in ensuring the delivery of dividends at the grassroots by the various governments.”

The House also called on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to wake up to its responsibility on federal roads in the state.

The lawmakers equally called on President Muhammadu Buhari to arrange for the refund of all monies the state has spent maintaining federal roads in the state.

Agunbiade (Ikorodu I) said that the step has become imperative considering the disaster delay could bring to residents and economic activities in the area.

He said, “The road is in a very terrible condition, it connects Ikorodu to Sagamu. It is so damaged that unless care is taken, it can lead to losses of lives.

“Our people cannot wait for the Federal Government to fix the road. We want to call on the governor to direct all relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the state to help do palliative on this road.

Hon. Tunde Braimoh (Kosofe 2) said that there was need for urgent intervention by the state government, stressing that the road was germane to the economic activities of the state.

The lawmaker added that the state government needed to give attention to the road at the entrance to Magodo Estate also.

Hon. Nurudeen Saka-Solaja ( Ikorodu II), who noted that about 45 industries are located along the corridor, said that the busy road has been abandoned for long.

Also speaking, Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi, the Chairman, House Committee on Education urged the industries along the corridor to wake up to their corporate responsibility.

Hon. Abiodun Tobun, the Chairman, House Committee on Works and Infrastructure said, “Most of the federal roads in Lagos are suffering and the paucity of fund cannot allow the state to fix all of them.”

The Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who noted that the poor state of most roads has led to the loss of several lives, urged the state to do something urgently.

Obasa said that the state government has spent billions of naira managing federal roads, stressing that most of the fund expended had not been refunded by the Federal Government.

“We will continue to call on the Federal Government to do the needful, we cannot close our eyes on all these roads,” the speaker said.

He urged FERMA to carry out repair on all failed federal roads in the state.
