    Ikorodu West seals shops over indiscriminate dumping of refuse

    Ikorodu West Local Council Developmental Area (LCDA), has directed the council’s Environmental Department to seal shops for 20 days over indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads.

     The council Chairman, Sulaimon Kazeem, gave the directive to seal shops along the NBC Road Corridor, Ebute Police Post Junction, Ipakodo, Ikorodu.

     The order came after Olarenwaju-led efforts to clear trash illegally dumped on the road median by residents.

     He said his administration is committed to safeguarding public health and upholding environmental standards, ensuring continued public awareness of the hazards and health implications of indiscriminate refuse dumping.

     “I met with the shop owners daily for one week, passionately pleading for compliance to prevent disease outbreaks and environmental pollution.

     “This decisive action follows a repeated, flagrant, and unacceptable defiance of environmental laws by some business operators despite my multiple interventions and personal appeals.

     “This administration is fundamentally committed to the health and sustainable development of Ikorodu West.

     “We will not plead endlessly, while public health is jeopardised,” he said.

     According to him, the council has intensified efforts to address waste disposal challenges and ensure a cleaner environment.

     The chairman urged residents and business owners to partner with the council to maintain proper waste disposal practices.

     “Utilise the assigned Lagos State Waste Management Authority private sector partnership operators.

     “Together, let us build a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Ikorodu West,” he said.

    Ikorodu West holds budget retreat

    The Chairman of Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Otunba Kazeem Sulaimon, has promised to complete all ongoing projects and initiate new ones before his tenure ends.

    This, he said, would make life more meaningful for the people of the council.

    Sulaimon spoke during the Budget Retreat at AM2PM Hotels, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

     He said the exercise was to review the performance of the council in the outgoing year 2024 with a view to draw out plans for the coming year 2025.

    The council boss urged council officials to “take this exercise seriously as it is the foundation for everything we want to do for our people next year. As a financial expert, I want to make sure we get it right at this level because you cannot build something on nothing”.

    The Council Manager, Mr Nurudeen Tobun, who has been spearheading various innovative ideas to reposition the council, said: “Year 2025 will be a great year for us by God’s grace. Issues such as delay in the availability of bills to distribute have been taken care of and tools for staff members to work with will be available for them in good time”.

    The Head of Planning, Budget and Statistics Department, Mrs Adesegun, urged those in attendance to put the interest of the public first in their programmes and activities for the coming year 2025.

    Dr. Olusoga Badejo, a retired Director in the state civil service spoke on Budget Discipline and the Local Government Autonomy: The Issues, Challenges and Prospects.

    He painted a picture of the consequences and likely effects of the local government autonomy judgment by Supreme Court on budgeting, finance and administration on local governments going forward.

    Chief Executive Officer of Dacaconsults, Bayo Ayoade, also facilitated a session on the Challenges that hinders the increase of Ikorodu West LCDA Internally Generated Revenue and the way forward.

    Ayoade emphasized the need for both the political and administrative staff of the LCDA to plan ahead, noting that the local government job is time-bound.

    “You either have eight years or 35 years to do whatever you want to do before you will have to exit the system so make sure you develop yourself and plan for the future because it just a matter of time before it catches up with you” he said.

    Ikorodu West holds Stakeholders’ forum on budget

    Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area has held Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum ahead of next year’s budget preparation.

    The event took place at Isawo townhall, Igbo-olomu, Ikorodu.

    The Council Chairman, Kazeem Sulaimon, lauded the participants for their constant support towards the upliftment of the local government.

    He said their support aided the success achieved so far.

    “I am happy to announce without any fear or equivocation that given the modest allocation and funds available to us, we have done our best possible to move Ikorodu West LCDA forward. Our LCDA is wearing a new look with the new administrative building being built, interlocking of the entire compound and general facelift of our environment to reflect a serious-minded work environment. All our streaks of achievements, reflect our commitment to the development of our LCDA which we would not have done alone except with your support,” he said.

    The council boss described his administration as a listening government; saying most of the achievements in the outgoing year are projects that were nominated by the people through the previous gatherings.

    He urged the residents to continue to support governments at various levels.

    He said: “Let me make it clear that our country, Nigeria, is in safe hands. It is currently undergoing necessary reforms that would guarantee a more robust economy which only a courageous leader like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu can do. He understands the issues and he is taking necessary steps to make life more meaningful and better for every Nigerian. As we all know, it takes pain for a mother to get the baby out of her stomach after nine months but after giving birth, she would be congratulated and she would rejoice. I am hopeful and optimistic that in no distant time, Nigeria and Nigerians would rejoice. Let us keep the hope alive. Tomorrow would be better for us all.”

    One of the stakeholders, Jimoh Kayode, praised the council boss for relating with the community.

    He said: “We have proposed two of our needs to him out of our numerous challenges. We need a bigger structure to accommodate more pupils in our school and also our health centre needed to be expanded so that it can benefit more people.”

    Representative of Okeoko Community and a member of National Youth Council of Nigeria in Ikorodu, Ojo Oyewole, explained that the council has been doing a lot for the community but more needs to be done.

    Oyewole called for the building of recreation, sports and vocational centres as well as empowerment programmes for youths.

    The Chairman of Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Kazeem Sulaimon, has distributed free GCE forms to over 100 indigent students.

    Kazeem said the gesture aimed to relieve parents of burdens and to support students’ educational pursuits.

    He stated that his administration had focused on infrastructural renewal of schools, provision of instructional materials to pupils and teachers, distribution of JAMB forms to the indigent students as well as reviving literacy culture in our locality.

    Kazeem urged the beneficiaries to be resilient, positive, and optimistic, using his life as a testament to achieving success through determination.

    “I wish to implore the beneficiaries of this great gesture to be more focused on your academics and not to play with your future,” he stated.

    The council boss urged the students to stay focused on their education, shun violence, embrace patriotism, and strive for excellence.

    “My advice to them is to get educated and not just certification, not just passing, but they should imbibe it in their lifestyle,” he said.

    Moridiyat Okesola, a recipient from Ipakodo Senior Grammar School, commended the chairman for the gesture.

    The Chairman, Ikorodu West Local Government Council Development Area (LCDA), Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, has distributed 1500 bags of rice to vulnerable residents.

    According to him, the gesture is an initiative of the Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to help the needy among the citizenry.

    “We are celebrating our amiable Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, he gave us money to celebrate, and what is the essence of celebrating when people need something, so he told us to go  to our various LCDs and local governments,” he said.

    Kazeem stated that the beneficiaries included politcal parties, wards, Christians, Muslims, youth councils, council management and the community at large.

    He  said the aim of the palliatives was  to cushion the effect of economic hardship in the country.

    He said it was not the first time reaching out to the residents and it would be a continuous exercise.

    The council boss mentioned some of the achievements he had made to include: infrastructural development, empowerment of citizens and welfare programes.

    He stated that  the various projects were ongoing like the total construction of liberty roads and drainage, interlocking of Fela Ahmed Street, ongoing renovation of existing Secretariat and construction of new Administrative office among others.

    One of the beneficiaries, Ifekoya Oluwatoyin, praised the commitment of the Chairman in ensuring proper welfare of the residents, stating that it is always a continuous one. She prayed for the continuous success of the council in whatever they do.
