  • Palms Villa Estates berths in Lekki, Ikorodu

A real estate firm, Chattel Reality and Investment Company says it has introduced a land ownership scheme that will eradicate owning a land in Lagos State as being the exclusive reserve of the rich and the powerful. One of such schemes with which the firm intends to achieve this is the Palms Villa Estate in Ibeju Lekki and Ikorodu,  which the firm has started selling.

Aside from its 10 per cent discount offer on all land payment plans, the company is spreading payment options for purchased land up to four years. This, it says, is to give all low income earners an opportunity to be landlords in Lagos. For instance, to own a plot of land at Chattel Reality’s Palms Villa Estate in Ikorodu, an intending buyer can pay as low as N22,000 monthly and N83,000 monthly for land in the Palms Villa Estate in Ibeju Lekki.

Its Managing Director, Mr. Ifeanyi Okafor, explained that such initiative is one of the company’s strategies to get more Nigerians to invest in properties and own their own houses. “We must as a matter of urgency always look for incentives to encourage people to own their homes. Things are pretty difficult at the moment and many people might not be able to afford a huge sum of money to purchase a land not to talk of building a house. So for us, we are more interested in empowering people and helping them to achieve their dreams of becoming a landlord,” he explained.

Chattel Realty and Investment Company limited is an innovative real estate development company that engages in the development of master-planned housing estates. The company’s objective is to provide cutting-edge real estate solutions to the huge Nigerian real estate market, which yearns for affordable housing as well as other real estate investment products.

She assured that customers would be safe because the edifice is close to Area N Police Station in Ijede, Ikorodu, in addition to two other stations around.  “Based on the agenda of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Oluseun,  if there is a place like this, there should be 24-hour patrol. We have about two to three police stations that are responsible for this place, so, put your mind at rest because we are 100 per cent sure that there cannot be any crime around here. The bad boys cannot take advantage of this place; they know that we have more personnel and this place would be secured 24 hours. The people of Ikorodu will enjoy affordable prices and loyalty promos to reward and compensate them from time to time.

“Subsequently, as we grow, we hope to expand not only into other parts of Lagos such as Ikeja, Victoria Island and Ikoyi, we intend to extend beyond Lagos,” Peters said.

  • Suspected cultists set house, cars ablaze in Lagos

Suspected cultists on Sunday set ablaze a building and two vehicles at Ogijo, Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb.
The arsonists were said to attacked the properties belonging to the father of a leader in a rival cult group, located beside Omoleye hospital in Ogijo.
It was learnt that the groups have had several clashes in the neighbourhood, destroying properties and valuables.
The Nation gathered that the attacks have forced residents to flee their homes for fear of being hurt by the cultists.
It was learnt that before the hoodlums set the house ablaze, they damaged two vehicles parked in the compound.
They were said to have poured petrol on the building and lit it, keeping watch to ensure it was completely razed.
But an eyewitness was said to have informed firemen at Ikorodu, who got to the scene on time to quench the fire.
However, they were obstructed by the cultists, who threatened to burn the firemen and their truck if they do not vacate the premises.
Confirming the development, the state fire service director, Rasaq Fadipe said the arson was reported at about 10:26am.
“Someone ran to the station to report the outbreak and firemen moved to the site to contain it.
“But some boys came around and halted firemen from quenching the fire. They threatened to burn the men and the truck if they don’t leave the site.
“I do not know why they set the building ablaze but I learnt it belonged to the father of a rival cult member.”
Fadipe also admitted that the fire service attended to a distress call at the Pan African University.
According to him, the call was received at about 3:40pm, adding that the inferno started at the school’s diesel tank that supplies its generator.
He said the fire destroyed the tank, the generator, as well as a PHCN cable.

  • Lagos urges court to vacate order on Ikorodu monarch

Lagos urges court to vacate order on Ikorodu monarch

Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has urged a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja to vacate the order it made last Friday stopping the coronation of Kabiru Adewale Shotobi as the Ayangbure of Ikorodu.

Justice Olabisi Ogungbesan had issued the order while ruling in a motion ex-parte brought by an applicant, Odupitan Adeniyi Eniola, through his lawyers, Joseph Okobiemen and Folarin Dalmeida.

The court had stopped Chief Shotobi from presenting himself for coronation or to be crowned for the vacant stool and title of Ayangbure of Ikorodu pending the determination of  the suit filed by Eniola, from the Lambo branch of the Lasunwon chieftaincy family of Ikorodu.

It also restrained Ambode or anyone acting under his authority from going ahead to crown the Odofin of Ikorodu, Chief Kabiru Shotobi, as the new Ikorodu monarch.

The Ikorodu kingmakers had scheduled the crowning of Odofin Shotobi for last Saturday having completed all the traditional rites precedent to coronation of the new Ayangbure.                                                                                                                                                       The court had also restrained Shotobi from parading himself as the Ayangbure of Ikorodu, or from actualising any recognition thereon and from exercising any of the Ayangbure Royal functions until the determination of the motion on notice.

In addition, the court barred Lagos State Governor, the Attorney-General, the state’s Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs and the seven other defendants or any of their agents, from performing last Saturday coronation.

But at the resumed hearing  yesterday, the governor, who was represented by a state counsel, Mr. S.A. Quadri, urged the judge to vacate the order, saying it was made in error.

Quadri, who described the ex parte application that led to the order as an abuse of court processes, pointed out that the order was made after Shotobi had already been given the staff of office.

According to him,  the former Governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola on May 25, installed Shotobi as the new Ayangbure and presented  him at the 17th meeting of the State Executive Council held on May 26.

Quadri claimed that contrary to the facts presented before the court,  what took place last  Saturday was not a coronation but a mere social gathering to celebrate Shotobi’s installment as a monarch.

“The ceremony which took place on August 15 is a mere fun fare organised by the Ikorodu community and the first defendant (Shotobi) to celebrate his ascension to the throne of his fore fathers and to accord notable distinguished personalities with chieftaincy titles.

“The first defendant was surprised when it became news that a ruling was delivered on August 14 pursuant to an ex parte application restraining the 1st defendant and other defendants from proceeding with the coronation fixed for the 15th day of August.

In an affidavit deposed to in support of Ambode’s application,  one Usman Danboyi argued that the ex parte ought not to have been granted if the facts were revealed to the honourable court.

“The order was obtained by misrepresentation of facts and should be set aside,” Danboyi said.

Counsel to the Ikorodu kingmakers Olusegun Fabunmi, also raised a preliminary objection, challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the case.

The kingmakers – Chief Zacheus Odusoga, Chief Afolabi Adekanyaoja, Chief Karimu Ore and Chief Jacob Adaraloye – are urging the court to not only vacate the restraining order but to dismiss the entire suit.

Fabunmi described the suit as an abuse of court processes, claiming  that the subject matter had already been determined by Justice M.A. Savage of the Ikorodu High Court in a ruling delivered May 22.

Fabunmi urged the court to vacate the order restraining Shotobi from exercising authority in the capacity of Ayangbure of the ancient town.

Justice Ogungbesan adjourned the matter till October 6.

Acid threat charge: Magistrate berates Police

The Magistrate’s court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos on Monday berated the Nigerian Police for improper handling of a case of threat to life and breach of peace leveled against a 38-year-old man, Johnson Emmanuel.

Emmanuel, was arrested on August 14, 2015, and taken to court by officers of the Owode Onirin Police Division, following an allegation of threat to life made against him by his neighbour, Taiwo Adigun.

Emmanuel’s neighbour, Adigun, accused him of threatening her with a substance suspected to be acid and he was charged by the police for committing an offence punishable under Section 56 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011.

The second charge was that he conducted himself ‘in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by going with a bucket containing substance suspected to be acid, to bath Adigun.’ The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 116 (d) of the criminal Laws of Lagos State.

Both the complainant and defendant were residents of number 1, Nathaniel Osagie Street, Irawo Bus Stop, Owode-Ajegunle.

After pleading not guilty, Emmanuel was remanded in custody at Kirikiri Prison, Ikoyi, pending the perfection of the bail granted him by the court.

However, at Monday’s ruling, Mr. W. B. Balogun upheld the defendant’s counsel’s submission of no case to answer and held that the prosecution had tendered ‘no evidence to prove the offences’.

The court further held that the Investigative Police Officer ‘had not done a proper investigation of the case’ and that the charges of threat to life and breach of peace were all unproven.

Mr. Watson, who was standing in for Mrs. Adejumoke Olagbegi-Adelabu, added that when people live in close proximity to each other in the same building, there are bound to be conflicts.

He criticized the police for not exploring ways to settle the matter before bringing it to court.

The two-count charge was struck out and the defendant was discharged.

  • Palace disagrees with ruling over Ikorodu monarch

Palace disagrees with ruling over Ikorodu monarch

Palace sources yesterday debunked reports about a coronation ceremony of the Ayangbure of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi.

Justice Olabisi Ogungbesan of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja on Friday stopped kingmakers from crowning Shotobi as king following an ex-parte motion brought by an applicant, Odupitan Adeniyi Eniola, through his lawyers, Joseph Okobiemen and Folarin Dalmeida.

But a palace source told The Nation that today’s event is for people who are to be conferred with chieftaincy titles and not for coronation.

The source who spoke under anonymity said the chieftaincy ceremony will go as planned.

“The coronation had already been carried out on August 2. We already have a monarch since then in person of Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotebi as the Ayangbure of Ikorodu. Tomorrow (today’s) event is conferment of chieftaincy titles on some respected Lagosians. It has nothing to do with coronation,” he said.

He dismissed Justice Olabisi Ogungbesan of an Ikeja High Court’s ruling, saying those that sought the injunction are unaware of what today’s event is all about.

“Jagaban (Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu) is the one receiving chieftaincy title tomorrow (today); no one is being installed as monarch as it has done in the past. The crown has been wear since August 2; what we want to do is purely a reception and decorating new chiefs. The ruling obtained is Jankara judgement,” he said.

It would be recalled that former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola had handed over staff of office to Oba Shotobi before leaving office.

The monarch had on August 2 held a World Press Conference after leaving Ipebi where he had 60 days seclusion as parts of the rights for mounting the throne.

At the briefing, Oba Shotobi urged members of the Lasunwon Ruling House, particularly those of the Adegorushen Royal Family who contested the stool with him, to sheath their swords and join hands with him to build the ancient town.

He said: “To my brother princes, I equally thank you for showing keen interest in the stool of our fore fathers. It is our birthright and it belongs to all of us. I recognise your desires, the resources and the energy you all expended, which is an indication of the worthiness and significance of the throne.”

He described Ikorodu as the fastest growing urban town in the state experiencing influx of people of different background, tribes and races.

He noted that the urbanisation of the town came  with mixed blessings, pointing out that the economic and infrastructural developments in the town have remained a major attraction.

This, he said, was why investors and non-indigenes who came into Ikorodu refused to go back to their places of origin.

He urged members of the  Lasunwon Ruling House, particularly those of the Adegorushen Royal Family who contested the stool with him, to sheath their swords and join hands with him to build the ancient town.

He said: “To my brother princes, I equally thank you for showing keen interest in the stool of our fore fathers. It is our birthright and  it belongs to all of us. I recognise your desires, the resources and the energy you all expended, which is an indication of the worthiness and significance of the throne.

“Having fought gallantly and God has ordained His own, I earnestly plead with all my brother princes to please sheath their  swords and collaborate with me to usher into Ikorodu a glorious reign of peace, harmony, tolerance and accommodation which are critical conditions for progress and development.”

Oba Shotobi invoked the spirits of the progenitor of the Lasunwon Ruling House and of all obas that have ruled the ancient town for an unprecedented development of the town.

He thanked those who played major roles on his ascension to the throne.

Oba Shotobi poured encomium on his predecessor, the late Oba Salaudeen Oyefusi who he described as a courageous, bold, forthright and great king who served the Ikorodu community with total commitment, love and dedication.

He promised to leverage on the goodwill, solid foundation, peace laid down by his predecessor to ensure the development of the town.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Tunji Disu, has said armed robbers will be kicked out of Lagos State.

ACP Disu said his men arrested over 181 suspects last month.

He told The Nation at the weekend that the RRS did a crime mapping of the state and is better placed to curb armed robbery.

He said: “When I was posted to head the RRS, we did crime mapping in line with the directives of the CP and located areas that are prone to crimes.

We identified Oshodi, Ikorodu, Ijora among others as areas where traffic robbers, bag snatchers as well as those who steal from children and in houses were rampant. So we decided to start with those areas with greater number.

”We raided under the bridges and other hideouts of the miscreants and in most cases, the suspects put up resistance.

“We discovered that they post spies, including juveniles on ground who informed them of police arrival. At times we saw their spies playing cards.

“We were able to arrest the 181 because of the commitment of my men. They have shown great understanding and have remained committed in our drive to ensure that Lagos is safe for residents and business.

“Lagosians should not be afraid. They should go to sleep with their eyes close because the police would clamp down on criminals.

”But as you know, the police cannot do much without information that is why we are appealing to the general public to furnish us with useful information that will assist us serve them better.”

Disu added that the suspects have been handed over to the relevant offices for further action.

On what the RRS was doing in respect of incessant cult clashes in some areas of the state, Disu said the CP had issued a directive to all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and Area Commanders to fish out criminal elements obstructing public peace, adding that no stone would be left unturned in maintaining peace and security across the state.
