    Ikorodu indigenes jostle for governorship

AN association, the “Group of Eminent Persons,” has said that Ikorodu sub-zone should produce the next governor of Lagos State.

At a meeting held at the palace of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Salaudeen Oyefusi, organised by  the Ikorodu Human Resources Development Board, the leader of the group, Prof. Kunle Wahab, said the slot has eluded the division almost two decades.

He said: “Lagos was created in 1967, our leaders gave us the impression that the manpower requirement of government and indeed the provision of welfare services and infrastructural development would be spread evenly over the five divisions in the state.”

He added that while other divisions have taken a shot at the governorship, Ikorodu has been left in the cold.

Wahab said that the political class has tampered with the original structure based on the five divisions of Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos, and Epe, noting that Ikorodu is no longer recognised as a division. He added: “It is only part of Lagos East Senatorial District. As part of Lagos East Senatorial District, it is struggling with others in the districts for a position believed to have been zoned to the district.”

He said Lagos Central and Lagos West have produced the governors. “Lagos East is now to search for an acceptable candidate who is capable of raising the political and economic bar of the state to a higher level.

“This is the task ahead of us all and it is a task that must be accomplished. Let us search for an eminently qualified candidate for presentation to the powers that be in the politics of Lagos State.”

Also speaking, the chairman of Ikorodu Division  Resource Development Group (IDRDG), Prof. Adebayo Ninalowo, said that power shift can be achieved, if there is unity in Ikorodu.

He maintained that the interest of the larger society was paramount in the quest to get the governorship. He said: “There are enduring incidents of lack of equity in regard to both political appointments and placement in the civil service structure in Lagos State to the detriment of indigenes of Ikorodu division.”

  • Lawmaker empowers 500 in Ikorodu

The Ikorodu Town Hall, last weekend, came alive with political activities. Before a large crowd of residents and the All Progressive Congress (APC) leaders, member representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, donated various items, including cash and equipment to empower hundreds of people in her constituency.

Visibly excited by the gesture, the beneficiaries, among who were physically-challenged person, were full of prayers to the lawmaker, praising her for giving them opportunity to be useful in the society.

The beneficiaries beamed with smile as they stepped forward to receive the items from the former Lagos Deputy Governor, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, who chaired the occasion. Ogunleye advised the recipients to make good use of the items to justify the lawmaker’s confidence in them.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba S.A Oyefusi, represented by Olori Taibat Oyefusi, Ranodu of Imota, Oba Ajibade Agoro, former Secretary to Lagos State Government, Chief Olorunfunmi Basorun, member representing Ikorodu constituency II in Lagos House of Assembly, Hon Sinai Agunbiade and Iya Kalo Kalo.

To the lawmaker, empowerment of constituents should be a continuous programme for elected officers to reduce poverty in the society. Hon. Dabiri-Erewa, who noted that the empowerment programme was the biggest she had held, said: “We were surprised with the kind of assistance people needed when we received requests from people that filled the empowerment forms. We found out that some people just want to sell soft drinks, some want to sell beers, while some just needed wheel barrows to make a living.”

She added: “Through my party, the APC, we want to help the people of Ikorodu, especially the women, no matter how small. The idea is just to have a positive impact on the lives of our people here in Ikorodu. And we want you to know that APC is the party that cares about the wellbeing of the people irrespective of race or religion.

The lawmaker, who said she could not quantify the amount she spent on the empowerment programme, said the event was about touching the lives of the people she is representing. “I cannot calculate how much we spent to do this empowerment. I don’t even want to bring it down to naira and kobo, but the most important thing is that we must touch the lives of people that voted for us,” she said.

Basorun, who described the lawmaker as people’s true representative, said he was gladdened that Ikorodu people supported Hon. Dabiri Erewa to represent them at the National Assembly. He said the lawmaker’s periodic empowerment and her decision not to abandon the people at the time of need was an indication that Ikorodu possessed people who could govern the state.

He said: “It gladdens my heart that this empowerment programme is taking place at a time when poverty is wrecking havoc in the society. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has shown to us that elected officials don’t have to run away from the people, who voted them in. We are here today because we want to leave Ikorodu better than we met it. She has performed and carried people along. We are happy that the people’s support for Abike Erewa is not misplaced.”

  • Residents cry out over military occupations

Residents of Agura community in Ikorodu have cried out over the occupation of their land by soldiers.

They said they can no longer access their community because of the presence of the military men drafted to the land by Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL).

The community expressed concerns at a press briefing held at the premises of the Lagos Television, LTV 8 at the weekend.

The spokesman and Secretary of Agura community, Olaniran Omoyele, claimed Chevron bought the land, which is about 365 hectares in 2005, with forged documents from land grabbers.

“When this was brought to the notice of the elders and leaders of the community, they wrote an official letter through the community solicitor to Chevron Nigeria Limited intimating it of the true ownership of the land and the illegality of the purchase.

“The letter was acknowledged by CNL but it failed to do the needful,” he explained.

Omoyele said the community has written and protested this matter to the Lagos state House of Assembly for intervention, saying the House was looking into the matter.

According to him: “The era of militarisation is over in Nigeria and Agura community cannot be an exception. “We demand that the frightening looking soldiers oppressing and intimidating us should vacate our inheritance.

“We therefore advice Chevron to either obey the Nigerian Law or leave this country.”

He added: “Our progenitors are the rightful owners of the land known as Agura town comprising several villages, which includes Ilaba, Oju, Agemo, Igbalu, Iponmi, Aiyetoro, Oke-Olokun, Ewu-Agbo, Igbose, Alaru-Maku, Papa etc.”

Asked why the community has not explored the legal option by taking Chevron to court since the purchase documents are fake, Omoyele said the community wants to exhaust every amicable settlement method before opting for the legal option.

  • Attention BRF: More pedestrian bridges needed.

Attention BRF: More pedestrian bridges needed.

The lives of Lagosians and others therein need to be considered by the Governor of the State and his entire team.

Driving through the Agege Motor way, I saw things that really touched me and it’s something we must address in this state, Pedestrian Bridges. The road is one of the busiest of roads and we got citizens ranging from School kids to pregnant mothers and women using the express as a means to get to the other end of the road en route their various destinations. This is not right as the lives of these people is at stake and served on a platter of gold for onrushing and senseless drivers plying that route.

Not less than 20 Pedestrian bridges needs to be build to serve the masses and ease their stress of having to cross the slab and the express road to get to the other side of the road. We must be our brother’s keeper and the Government should know this is something that needs urgent attention.

The Agege Motor way is not the only road that needs to have these bridges built. Other areas like the Ikorodu and alike, where there are few or no pedestrian bridges should be visited so as to see how people use the express. Apart from individual’s lives at stake here, traffics on these routes are tiring due to pot holes and drivers slowing down for these individuals to successfully cross the express way to the other side.

Please, we must act fast and treat this with paramount.

Estimated at N29 billion, the World Bank assisted project, which began last August, is to be completed by December, next year.

  • Egbin, a community living at the edge

Egbin, a community living at the edge

Egbin community in Ikorodu, Lagos State is home to Nigeria’s biggest thermal electricity plant. The community sees rays of light on a daily basis but does not enjoy the luxury. Taiwo Abiodun visit the community and reports

On the streets of Egbin, a semi rural community on the outskirts of Lagos, electric cables dangle on poles while transformers dot the landscape. Going further into the community, the splashing sound of the lagoon sounds as natural music for the environment. There is no doubt that the thermal station has made the community famous. But beyond the fame and despite hosting a large thermal station it lives in pitch darkness.

At night residents see rays of light illuminating surrounding high brow communities such as Lekki, Ajah, Victoria Island and some others in bright illuminating lights while they live in darkness. They have resorted to purchasing generators to power their electric gadgets.

The darkness has made residents to cry out for attention to save them from perpetual darkness. A few said they have resigned themselves to fate. “For weeks our bulbs did not blink. In fact, we don’t seem to be living in the 21st century. We are still living in a Stone Age”, a mechanic who begged for anonymity said amidst roars of laughter. He added “I don’t know when last I ironed my clothes. Our foodstuff in the fridge have spoilt while we have exhausted our purse from buying fuel everyday for those who can afford it. This is no thanks to lack of electricity.”

Ironically, at night they see bright ray of light at the other end of the lagoon, while the town that supplies the light is in pitch darkness! Egbin Thermal Power Station supplies light to others but cannot do same to its host community.

    A tale of two settlements

Egbin fate reminds one of Kainji Dam, Niger State the dam which is located in New Bussa did not supply its host town light for many years but was supplying other towns, cities and countries.

In Egbin, according to Ade Ahmed, artisans have turned into Okada riders, while those who cannot afford to buy one have become idle or turned to crimes. “Those running restaurants have either abandoned the business while generators of all sizes and make are competing with one another. We are battling with their noise and air pollution here, the air is polluted, and the question on everybody ‘s lips are what is Egbin thermal doing here? We are being cheated as they are killing the goose that lays the golden egg,” he lamented.

Mama Chukwudi, a hair dresser said, “We are really suffering and here we are complaining, nobody has listened to our plight. That is the situation in Egbin, a suburb that distributes power but has never enjoyed it even for a day!” She added, “They did not give us meter yet they collect meter maintenance and I don’t know what they are maintaining.”

She believes the community is neglected because the authorities think more money can be generated from other surrounding communities than in Egbin.

Mr Ibrahim Malomo in annoyance said, “When we see the vast mass of water one would be seeing Lekki with full electricity at night at the other side. It is just the opposite while we who generate light do not see any to consume, the mighty ones at the other end are consuming it, is this fair?”

Another hair dresser who identified herself simply as Mama Caroline said the neglect of the community was due to the fact that they are poor. “Lekki, Ikoyi and Ajah axis always have electricity supply because of the rate of their consumption of the power. There, they have companies that can consume the electricity and that is why they give them light always but here in Egbin we only have our television sets , radios and few things that could consume power, so we are not very important to be given light!”

“Artisans are suffering mothers are feeling the heat while the town is in total darkness. This same Egbin few years ago was supplying neighbouring countries such as Ghana, Cameroon and Togo light” lamented Toyin Akin who said she sells bags in the area. “Although I sell bags and don’t need electricity for that but what of when I get home? This is too bad. Yet there’s nobody out there to pity us.”

Mrs. Iyabo Ologundudu who runs a restaurant in the town said “we suffer from lack of light here. There has been no electricity for three weeks. In fact, all what we have in the freezer have all been destroyed. My sales have dropped. Before I used to make over N35,000 a day but now with lack of light I make only N5,000! Whereas the Egbin PHCN would have light for 24 hours. It was funny when few weeks ago they came out with their megaphone to announce to the public that there is no light in their compound , and that we should bear with them as if we had light before. Few hours later when their light was restored they did not say anything again and we were left in total darkness “

Kehinde Muritala , a welder said , “we are at a loss when there is no light in this community we are really suffering, when there is light I don’t make much gain not to talk of when there is no light. The type of generator I can use for my job costs about N1.2million and I cannot afford to buy such.”

    Uncooperative attitude of Egbin Staff

However, a staff of the Egbin Thermal Station confided in this reporter that the station only generates power while Ikorodu, Ikeja and some stations are those that distribute what is generated from there. He added, “The power to distribute the light lies on the distributors. These distributors are directed by the ogas at the top where to distribute their light to. The command is from the top. Do you know that some of these senior bosses here are just figure heads as they have no power to either complain or react to many issues like where they should supply power?”

This is not the first time the community members are complaining. Last year the youths, chiefs and community leaders protested against not having light and did not allow members of House of Representatives Committee on Power on inspection tour led by the chairman Patrick Ikhariale in order to examine the state of the plant and the level of implementation of the project earmarked in the 2012 project thermal, the irate youths stopped them from entering the town saying the station has for a long time not given them light while Mike Uzoigwe, an engineer and chief executive officer of the station escaped being lynched by the irate mob.

When The Nation reporter visited the station, he was directed to see the Public Relations Officer but she said she has no power to talk to the press and directed the reporter back to the CEO.

However, when the reporter contacted the CEO’s secretary in his office she again directed him back to the PRO, who in turn insisted that her boss is in charge. After series of telephone messages and phone calls to the CEO without any response, the reporter left the premises in frustration.

Meanwhile, residents of Egbin continue to live in darkness, a classical case of living at the bank of a river and washing the hand with spittle.

Community protests invasion by land speculators

Residents of Ogunnaike-Erunwen community in Ikorodu, Lagos State have taken to the streets in a peaceful protest to draw attention to what they called the invasion of their once peaceful community by gun-wielding hoodlums allegedly acting on the orders of one Deacon G. T. Hassan, a popular estate developer based in Ebute-Metta area of the state.

Led by members of the executive committee of the Ogunnaike Community Development Association (CDA) the protesters visited the Igbogbo Divisional Police headquarters, the palace of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Salaudeen Oyefusi as well as the secretariat of the Ikorodu Local Government Area.

Lamenting what he called a plot by some members of the Ogunnaike descendants family to unleash mayhem on the residents of the area in order to reclaim some undeveloped plots of lands, the chairman of the C.D.A, Mr. Paul Ojo said miscreants brought into the community a few months back have been harrasing and intimidating the people since July 2012.

“We bought our lands from the Ogunnaike descendant family since 1999 and we have enjoyed peaceful possession of the said lands until July 2012 when Hassan, claiming that he has been given power of Attorney by some members of the Ogunnaike family to repossess our lands, stormed the community with thugs.

“The hoodlums went about beating and maiming artisans and landlords working on their sites. They used dangerous weapons like guns, cutlasses and cudgels as they went on rampage for days until we were invited to a meeting by Hassan and one Alhaji Tajudeen Bolowotan.

“At the said meeting, Hassan, Bolowotan, Alhaji Fatai Adetola and Alhaji Igi Aje, claiming to be representing the family, said the thugs will continue to terrorise us until we repurchase the lands from them, since they are the new executives of the Ogunnaike descendants family.

“Not even the comfirmation by the former executive members of the family including Alhaji Agbaje, Alhaji Mukaila German, Alhaji Hassan Odugate and Mr. Sunday Ojurewu, who were also present at the meeting, that we purchased the plots of land from them after fulfilling all family requirements could make these people change their mind.

Reacting to the plight of the community, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke with the leaders at the council secretariat, promised to wade into the matter with a view to ensuring justice. She requested that a detailed petition, explaining their plight be submitted at her constituency office same day to enable her take urgent action.

At the Police headquaters, the protesters were enjoined by the Divisional Police Officer to refrain from taking the law into their hands but should rather allow the Police to investigate the matter and take action.

When contacted by our reporter for his side of the story, Deacon Hassan confirmed deploying some boys to the community but said they did not destroy anybody’s property.

“Yes, I took some boys to the place after I got a power of Attorney from the Ogunnaike family to reposses the land from the people there. I am only there with my boys to do my work and we have the right to stop those who may want to stop us from doing our work.

“Those boys will remain there until the community comply with the terms of the new executive of the family. My own work is to ensure that they comply and that is why my boys are there,” he said.
