  • Grandfather, daughter arrested over grandson’s death in Lagos

    The police in Lagos have arrested a grandfather and his daughter over the death of a 10-year-old grandson in Ikorodu area of the state.

    A source at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the grandfather and his daughter, mother of the deceased, were arrested for allegedly disposing the child’s corpse without the knowledge of the father.

    NAN gathered that the deceased, Abdullah Adisa, 10, the only child in the marriage, fell ill and later died while in the custody of the mother.

    The deceased mother, who was estranged with her husband over alleged infidelity, was living in her father’s house in Ikorodu when the incident happened.

    “While the child was sick, they did not inform the father of the child. When the child died, they did not inform him, rather, the grandfather told a scavenger to help dispose the corpse of the child.

    “When the father of the child demanded to see his son, he was told that the child had died. He requested for the corpse, they told him his corpse had been buried in cemetery already.

    “The father of the child reported the case to the police. When the police asked the grandfather to take the operatives to the spot of burial at the cemetery, he could not do so.

    “The grandfather and his daughter have case to answer. They will be charged to court for conspiracy and indecent behaviour to corpse,” the police source told NAN.

    When contacted, the Spokesman for the police in Lagos, DSP Bala Elkana, said he was yet to be briefed about the matter from the SCID.

  • Task force washes hands of pupil’s death

    THE Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (task force) has washed its hands of  the death of a pupil, Adijat Shakiru, at Akoun village, Ikorodu, Lagos.

    The girl was allegedly shot dead by a policeman last Wednesday.

    In a statement yesterday, the task force chief,  Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Chief Superintendent of Police,  said the agency was not involved in any operation around Ikorodu that fateful day.

    In the statement signed by the agency’s public relations officer, Taofiq Adebayo, Egbeyemi said it was unfortunate that the false report had generated comments that portrayed the task force as irresponsible.

    Egbeyemi confirmed the  pupil’s death, but said she was not killed by the task force.

    “It is on record that the officer who killed 17-year-old Adijat Shakiru at Ikorodu, Sgt. Mudi Emmanuel, has been arrested and is undergoing orderly room investigation at the Provost Marshall Unit for professional misconduct,” he said.

    The command, he said,  had found that “the action fell short of the rules of engagement for the use of firearms and professional standards for police”.

    The officer, Egbeyemi said,  would soon be tried for alleged murder.

  • Police arrest three in Ikorodu police station attack

    Three suspects, Ahmed Hassan, Daniel Enyin and Olaniran Alium, have been arrested in connection with attempts to set a police station at Ikorodu ablaze, the command said Tuesday.

    A mob on Monday evening razed a patrol vehicle and moved to burn the Imota Police Division following the alleged killing of a trader by policemen attached to the station.

    It was gathered that the policemen while in raid of criminal hideout in Adamo, had allegedly opened fire indiscriminately killing a woman in the process.

    But police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said it was the suspected criminals that used the victim identified as Hadiyat Sikiru, 18, an SS1 pupil as human shield.

    Stating the command’s account of the incident in a statement, Elkana said: “At about 5:30pm on March 18, following a tip off, a team of policemen on surveillance at Adamo community, Ikorodu raided a den of cultists who specialised in ritual murder and kidnapping for ritual purposes.

    “On sighting the police, they opened fire and equally used some of their hostages as human shields. During the operation that lasted for about one hour, two police officers were injured and three suspects were arrested. One Hadiyat Sikiru, 18, an SS1 student was hit by a stray bullet.

    “Attempt by other members of the deadly gang to attack our police station at Imota was met with stiff resistance by the gallant officers on duty.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Zubairu Muazu has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of Criminal Investigation, Panti to take over the case for indept investigation.”

     

     

  • SARS operatives held for ‘extorting’ money from suspect’s mum

    The police have arrested some operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for alleged illegally arrest, torture and extortion of money.

    They were said to have arrested and tortured a man, Emmanuel Adegbite and extorted N434,000 from his mother.

    The Nation learnt yesterday that the SARS operatives stormed Royal Crown Hotel, at Asolo, Ikorodu, Lagos on Tuesday and arrested some people.

    It was gathered that Adegbite, who was playing snooker was among those nabbed and taken to SARS base at Ijede.

    The operatives allegedly tortured them for hours at gunpoint and only stopped when Adegbite’s mother transferred N434,000 into an account provided by the officers.

    The woman, it was alleged, also paid the operatives another N30,000 for her son’s release. The total amount they allegedly collected was N464,000.

    The Nation learnt that the woman made the transfer from her Access Bank account to a Pagatech account number 3756479401.

    This information, which was shared on a group chat, attracted condemnation, with participants demanding that the culprits be arrested and the woman’s money refunded.

    Confirming the operatives’ arrest, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone II Command Lawal Shehu said the parties were expected at the zonal headquarters in Onikan today.

    He said: “As you said, it is an allegation. But we have already detained members of the team involved. The policemen, whose pictures were published, are in custody. Investigation is on. I am awaiting the parties to come tomorrow (today). We will get to the root of the matter.”

     

  • Sanwo-Olu offers free health screening to Ikorodu residents

    Hundreds of residents of Ikorodu area of Lagos on Monday received free health screening sponsored by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the health screening exercise include free medical consultation, free eye test, free drugs and hospital referral, among others.

    Wife of the APC governorship candidate and that of his running mate, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, respectively, who presided over the medical outreach programme, appealed to residents to vote en-masse for all APC candidates during the March 9 elections.

    Also speaking at the event, Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Sanai Agunbiade, appealed to Lagos residents to ensure victory for all APC candidates in the upcoming polls.

    Agunbiade urged the residents to vote in a correct manner to reduce the number of void votes during the election.

    Also speaking at the venue, the Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government, Mr Wasiu Adeshina, commended residents for coming out in their numbers to check their health status.

    Adeshina stressed the importance of health, reminding them that health is wealth and foundation of any meaningful socio-economic development in any society.

    According to the council boss, good health care system in a society gives rise to a formidable labour force which in turn lead to a viable economy.

    “It is wise for anybody above 40-years of age to engage in frequent medical checkup for the purpose of maintaining their health, prevention and treatment of disease.

    Mrs Sherifat Shokunbi, one of the beneficiaries, commended the council boss and the APC governorship candidate for the initiative.

    She urged them not to limit the benefit to only election period, but to make it a continuous exercise for more people to benefit. (NAN)

  • 19-year-old girl kills husband in Lagos

    The police in Lagos have arrested a 19-year-old girl Mary Adeniyi for allegedly stabbing her husband to death.

    Adeniyi, a nursing mother, is currently being detained at the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti, Yaba after she committed the alleged offence on Friday afternoon.

    It was gathered that the suspect and her husband Solomon Nduka, 30, had a scuffle over her alleged infidelity at their Shagamu Road, Ikorodu residence.

    The deceased, it was gathered usually accused the suspect of cheating on him which led to a fight.

    Adeniyi, said to have a four-month-old baby for her deceased husband, allegedly stabbed him on the neck region with a knife which prompted neighbours to rush him to a nearby hospital.

    But on arrival at the unnamed hospital, doctors were said to have confirmed the victim dead and the police notified.

    Spokesman for the command Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) confirmed the arrest, adding that investigation was ongoing.

    Oti said the suspect would be charged to court at the completion of investigation.

  • Ambode commissions ‘Great Hall’ of Ikorodu

    .Governor, Ex-minister Ogunlewe bag awards

     

    Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday commissioned a 1,500-seater facility built by the Oriwu Club of Ikorodu.

    The building, known as ‘The Great Hall’, was described by the Club as the largest in the Ikorodu Division and one of the largest in the state.

    Ambode, a grand patron of the Club, said the facility “will be of immense benefit to members, non-members and all the good people of Ikorodu.”

    He was represented at the event by Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rotimi Ogunleye.

    The governor praised the club for consistently empowering the less priviledged, among other socio-economic acts of philanthropy.

    Ambode added: “I’m impressed by the level of passion and commitment demonstrated by the members of this great club towards ensuring that Ikorodu takes its rightful place among the five divisions of the state.

    “This, I believe, is the primary essence of community-based clubs, and for this, the state government will always support you. Through your activities, you have continued to complement government’s efforts, particularly in promoting social stability and community development.”

    He pledged to sustain “more than a passing interest in the development of Ikorodu”, in line with the state’s policy “of an all-inclusive government.”

    Oriwu Club president, Olukayode Anibaba, described the event as historic and praised the governor “for making the project a reality.”

    Anibaba said: “Over 11 years ago, Oriwu Club under the leadership of Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe commenced the long walk to the realisation of constructing the Great Hall.

    “I had the singular honour of serving in the exco and leading the supervision of the construction team in building the edifice you are witnessing today up to the German Floor with all the columns in place. I give glory to God Almighty.”

    The event featured the presentation of awards to Ambode “in appreciation of his service to humanity,” among others. The governor was also made a honorary member, but his membership won’t take effect until May 29, when his tenure ends.

    A former Minister of Works and former Oriwu Club president, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, was also honoured for his services to humanity and contribution to the project’s success.

    The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi; Olubeshe of Ibeshe, Oba Richard Abayomi Ogunsanya and Sekumade of Ipakodo, Oba Basiru Aremu Sotonwa graced the occasion.

    Other attendees included club members and other prominent Ikorodu indigenes.

  • Gridlock as tankers, vehicles crash in Lagos

    A multiple accident on Wednesday’s evening caused a major traffic gridlock on Ikorodu road in Lagos.

    The accident occurred few metres away from the NEM Insurance corporate Head office on Ikorodu road.

    Several cars and petrol tankers were involved in the incident with a Toyota Yaris completely written off.

    An eyewitness told The Nation LASEMA officials responded swiftly to emergency calls.

    Many of them were seen evacuating the vehicles to ease the gridlock worsened by rush-hour traffic.

    A fire tanker belonging to the Lagos State Fire Service was also stationed to avoid fire outbreak.

  • Mortuary attendants docked for cutting off body parts

    Three mortuary attendants, who police accused of cutting off the two wrists and the heart of a dead woman, were on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ court in Lagos.

    The police charged Micheal Olusegun, 65; Oluseyi Olamade, 41; and Adetunji Aliyu, 45, with two counts of conspiracy and misconduct with regards to a corpse.

    The Police Prosecutor, ASP Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the accused persons committed the offence on Nov. 16, at St. Raphael Divine Mercy Hospital in Ijede, Ikorodu area of Lagos.

    Unuigbe said that one Athony Lawani, lodged a complaint to the police that the body of his sister, 51-year-old Mary Ehinlaiye, which was deposited at the morgue was missing.

    “My Lord, the complainant had gone to the mortuary to collect his sister’s body for burial but the attendant’s could not present the body to him.

    “It was later discovered that they had exchanged the body for another one and the family of the other deceased had buried his sister as their own.

    “They secretly went to the mortuary and exchange the corpses and tried to return her to her brother without two wrists and a heart.

    “Fortunately, Lawani discovered the missing parts and drew the attention of the police to the situation,” he said.

    The offence, he said contravened the provisions of sections 165 (b) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (Revised)

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 165 (b) provides for five years imprisonment while 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

    After the charges were read to them, they pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Peter Ojo, admitted the accused to bail in the N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Ojo ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation and must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

    He also ordered that the sureties must also show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos Government and be gainfully employed.

    Ojo adjourned the case until Jan. 30 for trial.

  • Ikorodu won’t betray you, monarch tells Sanwo-Olu

    The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, has assured the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, that his people will not betray them in their quest for the leadership of Lagos State.

    The monarch, whose people welcomed Sanwo-Olu and his team with music, dance and jubilation on Monday when the APC candidate visited the palace for a consultative meeting, said Ikorodu residents would vote for APC.

    Other monarchs in Ikorodu Division, who were at the palace of the paramount ruler, unanimously endorsed and pledged their support for the Sanwo-Olu and Hazmat ticket in next year’s election.

    On behalf of the monarchs, Oba Shotobi urged Sanwo-Olu to make provision for more infrastructure and improvement of social services in Ikorodu, if elected.

    He said: “The people of Ikorodu are behind you, but we want you to take the state to a greater height…

    “We don’t have to sweat so much because I know the two of you personally and I know that you understand what our needs are in Ikorodu Division. Ikorodu is one of the five divisions of Lagos. Existing infrastructure need to be expanded to accommodate increasing population and we need new ones. We want improvement in our public schools and health facilities, among others.”

    A political leader, Olorunfunmi Bashorun, promised the APC massive votes from Ikorodu.

    He said the division is an APC domain and the leadership had started the groundwork to return a huge margin for Sanwo-Olu.

    Sanwo-Olu promised the monarchs that he would run an all-inclusive government.

    He said: “I came here to seek guidance and prayers from our royal fathers. I am happy I have received your blessings. I am happy with the warm welcome you gave me and my running mate, Dr. Hamzat, who is my friend and brother. The kabiyesi has listed what our people in Ikorodu want government to do.

    “Let me assure the Ayangburen and our royal fathers from Ikorodu Division that we will do what you asked for and much more. We know the importance of Ikorodu and we will work to develop every part of Lagos. I appreciate your support and the prayers offered to me and my deputy. Our primary aim is to take Lagos to a greater height.”
