The court terminated the union after the petitioner, Mr Gbeminiyi Adeyiga, 88, had insisted that he would no longer condone the infidelity of his wife, named Sekinat.

Adeyiga had pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage forthwith, citing his wife’s unbridled promiscuity, lack of care and battery.

The President of the court, Mrs Funmi Adeola, subsequently, declared that they would no longer be husband and wife as the marriage had broken down irretrievably.

“Henceforth, you are no longer to be called husband and wife as investigation revealed that the wife truly commits the offence alleged against her.

“You should take advantage of the training and skills acquired to become employers of labour.

”You are to create employment opportunities where none exists and to constantly adjust to the dynamics of the market to drive investment and economic empowerment for many others.

”You should make the best use of your time to improve yourself constantly in this ever-changing world, ” Ambode said.

He pledged to move education from mere certificate to the level of technology and skills acquisition, mentorship for entrepreneurial and economic empowerment.

In his remarks, Mr Samuel Sogunro, the Polytechnic Rector, appreciated the governor for his attention to the needs of the institution.

Sogunro urged the graduates to utilise the theoretical, practical and entrepreneurial skills acquired from the polytechnic to be job creators, and not to be white-collar job seekers.

  • Ikorodu communities decry mass disconnection by Ikeja Electric

CONSUMERS in Ikorodu, Lagos,  have condemned the Ikeja Electric (IE)  for disconnecting two communities  because of the non-payment of bills by some of them.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday that the firm’s action amounted to jungle justice.

The customers  urged IE to  provide pre-paid meters for all  consumers to prevent  the disconnection of an entire community because of a few defaulters.

Ereko and Ajegunle communities at Ita-Oluwo in  Ikorodu were disconnected   last month because of the non-payment of bills by some customers.

An official of one of the Community Development Associations (CDAs), Alhaji Jimoh Yusuf, wondered why  IE would punish ‘’committed customers’’ for others’ misdeeds.

“Depriving one’s customers from enjoying the service paid for will only aggravate anger, frustration and disappointment and will reduce the status of such a company before the public,” he said.

Mrs Deborah Akinola, another CDA official, said IE’s strategy showed that it lacked an effective enforcement regime for bills collection.

“The company is simply punishing the innocent for its own inefficiency and disorganised revenue collection structure, and this is not fair,’’ she said.

A resident, Mr Femi Tofunmi, said IE should realise that it did not provide any of the facilities used to transmit electricity to the communities.

“Everything from poles, electricity wires and transformers we provided through the efforts of the CDA members.

“The communities practically provided all the facilities for transmitting electricity into their houses and so should enjoy some measure of consideration when punishment is to be meted out to erring customers.

An IE official at Odogunyan, which covers the affected communities, said the firm was compelled to take such measure from experience.

He said the debt owed the company was too much and was increasing monthly.

“Ereko Community alone has a total bill amounting to about N1.7 million for January and as at the last week of February, only less than N220,000 has been paid.

“I am not mentioning the backlog of debts that runs into millions of naira and we all know that the company has to pay for the energy it buys and supplies to these areas,” he said.

  • Protest in Ikorodu as bus crushes pupil

There was pandemonium yesterday at Ogolonto in Ikorodu,  Lagos, when a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle crushed a schoolboy.

The late Ezekiel Daniel, a primary six pupil of Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Primary School, was on his way to school.

It was gathered that he wanted to cross the BRT lane when the bus ran him over.

His death sparked a protest as  other road users vandalised two BRT buses but were dispersed by security operatives.

Those who commented on the accident on social media , blamed the boy’s death on the absence of a pedestrian bridge around Idiroko/Ogolonto road.

They said there were more than six primary schools in that neighbourhood, with pupils at risk of being knocked down while attempting to cross the road.

According to a witness, pupils usually crossed the road with the assistance of a man, who stood there in the mornings to stop vehicles for them.

“But the man was not there and the child tried to cross by himself. The BRT knocked him down and ran him over.

“Authorities should swing into action as soon as possible.  Moreso, a lasting solution should be provided to curb incessant BRT killings in that area.

“This can be done by erecting a bridge to save pupils who cross that road every morning to school,” said a witness, Asoro Olatunji.

Another resident, Ifeanyi Edmund said: “The question is why would you have schools without pedestrian crossing? What would it cost to mark a zebra crossing there so that vehicles would always slow down for pedestrians? We are our own problems in this country.”

Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said peace had been restored in the area.

He said: “We went there and although people gathered, they were dispersed. Nothing was destroyed or burnt there. Normalcy has since been restored to the area.”
