    The Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has inaugurated 19 projects and empowered 500 residents with business tools and start-up support.

    Chairman of the council, Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada, thanked Allah and acknowledged the collective efforts that made the feat possible.

    She described the projects a Launchpad towards an even brighter future for Ikosi-Isheri.

     “There was a time when many said it couldn’t be done, but we chose to respond with action,” she said, recounting the challenges faced and the determination that powered her administration’s transformative journey.

    Among the projects commissioned were road rehabilitations, drainage constructions, renovation of healthcare facilities, educational upgrades, and new civic infrastructure including the Legislative Building and Customary Court blocks. The projects span communities like Shangisha, Magodo Phase 2, Agiliti-Mile 12, and various streets in Ikosi.

    Princess Bada also teased an upcoming landmark project: the biggest Primary Healthcare Centre in the country, located within the LCDA, soon to be opened and promising to redefine grassroots healthcare delivery in Lagos and beyond.

    Beyond infrastructure, the event also marked a robust empowerment initiative where over 500 residents received life-enabling tools such as tricycles, sewing machines, barbing kits, popcorn machines, and POS machines with startup capital.

     “Today, we are giving you not just fish but fishing nets because development without human empowerment is incomplete,” she said.

    Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, lauded Princess Bada’s achievements, noting that they reflect positively on the party’s values and its commitment to grassroots development.

     “This is what dividends of democracy should look like,” he said, urging beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity and encouraging voters to choose capable leaders peacefully during the upcoming local elections.

    Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Bolaji Cecilia Dada, also hailed Princess Bada, emphasising the significance of her accomplishments for women in leadership positions.

    “She has delivered over 104 projects. It’s massive and inspiring,” Dada said, encouraging more women to aspire for political leadership.

    A member of Lagos State House of Assembly, Femi Saheed, described the projects as clear evidence of developmental governance.

    “The initiative of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in creating this LCDA has really helped grassroots development in Lagos State and that is what we are celebrating today,” Saheed said.

    The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, commended Princess Bada’s accountability and alignment with the THEMES+ agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

    Beneficiaries of the empowerment programme, including Idowu Bola Dada and Oyewole Ayobami, expressed profound gratitude.

    They emphasised that the provided tools would not only boost their income but also offer a sustainable means of livelihood, urging fellow beneficiaries to use the equipment wisely rather than sell them.

    All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Alhaji Toyin Balogun has promised to transform Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State, if elected as chairman.

    He is among 10 aspirants vying for the ticket at the proposed primary. The council polls may hold either in May or June.

    Balogun’s Media Team, in a statement in Lagos, said his leadership would be beacon of hope for Ikosi-Isheri’s growth and development, adding that his commitment to grassroots governance, community development, economic empowerment, and social welfare programmes is truly inspiring.

    Ikosi-Isheri graduates 600 in skill acquisition

    No fewer than 600 residents of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have graduated from the skill acquisition programmes organised by the council.

    The beneficiaries were trained in various skills ranging from production of home essentials, baking, catering, drink preparation, gele tying, fashion design, leather works, smartphone digital technology, event decoration, to wig production.

    The programme was held in collaboration with SPEED-UP LAGOS, Anti-Poverty Squad at the council’s secretariat.

    Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Princess Samiat Bada, who lauded the beneficiaries for their perseverance despite the challenges faced, said the event signifies “dreams realised, potential unlocked, and futures brightened.

    “I want you to reflect on the dedication, hard work, and perseverance that brought you to this moment. Completing this programme is no small feat, it required late nights of practice, early mornings of learning, and a commitment to mastering new skills. You have proven that you are capable of transforming challenges into opportunities”, she said.

    She added that the skills learnt would serve as a robust foundation that will contribute positively to the lives of the beneficiaries and the society as a whole.

    “The skills you have gained will serve as a robust foundation for your future endeavours, whether you choose to start your own business, support your families, or contribute to our community’s growth in meaningful ways.”

    Princess Bada appreciated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the SPEED-UP LAGOS Anti-Poverty Squad for their support and commitment in combating poverty and improving lives in Ikosi-Isheri.

    Director of SPEED-UP LAGOS, Princess Oluwagbemisola Ajetunmobi, urged the beneficiaries to utilise the skills learnt.

    She also appreciated the chairman’s support towards the success of the programme.

    She said the skills were broken down for easy assimilation for the beneficiaries.

    She added that the programme would be taken to all local councils in Lagos.

    She stated that vocational skills that take number of years to learn could be learnt in a short time if broken down.

    Supervisor for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Waleola Bello, said the beneficiaries were punctual and excited learning the skills.

    She added that the initiative would lead to economic development amongst the participants.

    A beneficiary, Nkechi Brown, thanked the chairman for the opportunity, promised to expand her sources of income by acquiring upskilling.

    Ikosi-Isheri to promote tourism, cultural heritage

    The Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State said it is set to host its annual carnival to promote tourism and its cultural heritage.

    Its Chairman, Princess Samiat Bada, at a briefing stated that the two-day event had the theme, “Our Heritage, Our Pride: A Celebration of Culture and Unity.

    According to her, the carnival slated for October 26 and 27, promises to be a grand showcase of the community’s rich cultural heritage, and will draw residents and visitors alike into an experience of tradition, music and dance.

    “This theme represents the rich traditions that define us as a community and unite us through our shared identity.

    “The event promises to bring harmony and joy to all while shining a spotlight on the vibrant culture of the Ikosi-Isheri Ketu and Magodo area and by extension, Lagos State.

    “This is a cultural celebration like no other,” she said.

    Princess Bada also emphasised the economic significance of the carnival, noting that the influx of visitors would offer an excellent opportunity for local businesses to thrive.

    She noted that the carnival offered a fantastic opportunity to promote local businesses, as the influx of visitors would help stimulate local economy and boost tourism in the area.

    She said: “The carnival is expected to draw a large crowd, which will contribute to the economic vibrancy of Ikosi-Isheri and its surroundings. The Ikosi-Isheri Ketu Magodo Annual Cultural Carnival has grown into a much-anticipated event in Lagos, with the 2024  edition promising to set new standards for cultural celebrations.

    “A carefully curated programme which  includes a mix of performances from both local and national talent, further underscoring the carnival’s commitment to showcasing Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage.

    “Day One will kick off with a colorful parade featuring various ethnic groups in the area, moving from the Council Secretariat in Ikosi to the CMD venue.

    “The parade will be followed by an opening ceremony graced by high-ranking dignitaries, including the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who will be the Special Guest of Honour. Entertainment for the day will feature performances from notable artists like Qdot and the Haruna Ishola Band, as well as a variety of cultural troupes.

    “This includes the Kegites Group, the State Troupe, and the Igbo and Ijebu Cultural Troupes, ensuring a showcase of Nigeria’s ethnic diversity.”

    The LCDA boss stated that the event was all about celebrating unity and pride with cultural presentations by the Kegites, performances by artists, and raffle draws to engage attendees on day two.

    “The carnival is a reflection of the community’s pride in its cultural heritage. With the support of traditional rulers, local stakeholders and media partners, the 2024 Ikosi-Isheri Ketu and Magodo Annual Cultural Carnival is poised to be a historic and unforgettable celebration of unity, culture, and pride.

    “Therefore, let us celebrate our heritage with pride and excitement, and make this year’s carnival a memorable event that will be cherished for years to come,” she said.

    Ikosi-Isheri sensitises mothers on breastfeeding

    Health experts in Ikosi Isheri Local Council Development Area have sensitised nursing mothers on the importance of breastfeeding and how it should be properly done.

    They spoke during the celebration of Breastfeeding and Year 2024 Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Plus Nutrition (MNCAN+N) Week at the Council Secretariat, Ikosi.

    The experts highlighted the importance of breastfeeding to nursing mothers, infants and the society at large.

    Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Princess Samiat Bada, said breastfeeding provides infants with essential nutrients to reduce risk of diseases and promotes maternal-child bonding.

    Represented by Mrs. Muyibat Balogun, Princess Bada said: “It is imperative to note that breastfeeding provides infants with the essential nutrients, antibodies, and emotional bonding that are necessary for their growth and development. Breastfeeding not only enhances the health and wellbeing of infants, but also benefits mothers by reducing the risk of various diseases while enhancing maternal-child bonding.”

    The Permanent Secretary, Health District 2, Dr. Dayo Olajide, stated that breastfeeding made infants healthier, and provides a strong immune system with high intelligence quotient.

    Olajide called for communal support for nursing mothers, noting that breastfeeding is a tedious job.

    Medical Officer of Health in the council, Dr. Okunade Adebayo, said nursing mothers could be susceptible to some diseases if they didn’t breastfeed.

    He also added that breastfeeding was cheap, readily available and contributed immensely to having a healthy nation.

    “Breastfeeding is very important to the community at large, the mother and to the child, because if the mother breastfeeds, the child will be very healthy and breast-milk is very cheap and readily available unlike other foods that are expensive,” he said.

    The council’s Apex Community Health Officer, Mrs. Fari Olabisi, said personal, food and environmental hygiene were vital to healthy living.

    She also urged nursing mothers to eat nutritious food.
